A friend and I stopped in for a sweet treat on a Sunday evening . They have both hard and soft ice cream to choose from. Of course they also have those ice cream cakes for a party! I had a medium sunday with chocolate syrup and whipped cream and my friend had a large cone. The cone was huge and he loved it. My sunday was ok, I think it could have had a little more chocolate on it. The staff were friendly and efficient. There is no where to sit this time of the year so we enjoyed our desserts in the car with the heat on. read more

Hadn't been to a Carvel in a long time. I remember growing up in Yonkers NY, and they were so good. Root beer floats, the creamiest soft serve, all kinds of sundaes. Found myself in Milford w best friend Pots & Pans, AKA the original Mister Softee, and we had to stop in. We both got medium cups of vanilla, mine dipped in a chocolate that turned into a hard shell, Pots' dipped into a cherry sauce. Still very creamy, and conjured up great memories. 4 stars read more

Good not great. The young girls seem to be more bothered than anything to help customers, but have that "college fund" tip jar directly in your face. Oh forget it if you come in with a group, the eyes roll hard behind the counter. The ice cream does save the day. It is very good. read more

This is the best ice cream shop in the area hands down, and the perfect place to get a cake for any occasion. The owner Mike is very hands on and really cares about his business and his staff. The ice cream tastes great and there are so many options. The cakes obviously taste great too since Carvel is known for making the best ice cream cakes around, but the designs that they can do here are amazing! I've had many cakes from here, but most recently I brought them a photo from my Dad's birthday party invitation not knowing what to expect, but the end result blew me away! I don't know how many years it's been since I've been to an actual Carvel store but appears to be still a thing in CT (jealous) as looking this up to make sure I had the correct location I see tons listed. We were driving by and saw the sign and had to stop to see what kind of cakes they offered. These days, I only see the standard ice cream cake made by them in the grocery store but I have fond memories of stopping for ice cream and other custom cakes at locations in Rhode Island. I was pleasantly surprised to see they had cakes, ice cream and even shakes. The woman helping us was pleasant. We ended up ordering more than we had anticipated - we got a scoop of the vanilla bourbon ice cream. In the poster it looks like soft serve but this was hard ice cream and they had about 15 flavors. I didn't want anything on it but you can get all sorts of toppings. The ice cream was really good. I loved the flavor and although hard it wasn't that hard and was almost melty. We also ordered a cold brew coffee shake. This was interesting. Very rich as expected and had a good flavor but a little bit of a weird after taste. I probably wouldn't order a shake again as the regular ice cream was creamy and filling enough. I recommend you stop in, especially if you're used to seeing Carvel only at the grocery store! read more

Pluses: + Homemade (on the premises) hard ice cream...not something you usually find at a Carvel + Good value + Was advised open year-round. Open to at least 10 pm summer hours + Staff was friendly...opposite of some other comments. Minuses: - This place is tired...and hasn't seen a dollar of reinvestment since 1969. Tip: the Milk Shakes are authentic and for 60 cents additional are made with real hard ice cream. Delightful. read more

Stopped into this Carvel as I had to relive my childhood memories and I was so happy I did! The place was in pretty great shape considering the last time I visited was 45 years ago! It was clean, the staff were very friendly, the service was great and even though there was a pretty good line of folks with the same great idea to get a Carvel ice cream treat we were taken care of in no time at all. I completely agree with Brenda. The girls here seem so completely miserable and unhappy to be there. This is a place where kids frequent, and it seems the girls there should at least like kids a LITTLE bit. They are very inattentive to my daughter, slam the ice cream in front of her, and NEVER EVER SMILE. Its a shame, because I love the ice cream and its one of the only local places open year round. I love Carvel's cakes, this location has been there for years and I have never gone in for ice cream before, so a few days ago I finally did, and what a disappointment. The building itself is kind of run down looking, and things don't look up to date, I looked past all of that though and continued to have an open mind about it. Since this was my first time there I had questions about sizes and scoops and such. The employee seemed to be annoyed by my questions and like it was an inconvenience for her to answer my questions. (The store was completed empty so it's not like she was overwhelmed with other customers). We took our ice cream to go and ate it at the duck pond near by. A few bites into my ice cream I found a hair in it and had to just throw the whole thing out. Overall it was very disappointing and I won't be going back. read more

Back in the day, you could probably get a malt and then help a nerd, a preppie, an ascot-wearing preppie, a perpetual stoner and his perpetually stoned dog catch bad guys. But now, you can get ice cream. Good ice cream. On a side note, I do agree with Bill and Brenda that the staff seems to be variant, and kind of miserable. Childhood memories = Carvel cakes. Every birthday, communion or graduation meant we got an awesome, chocolate, vanilla with crunchies in the middle - ice cream cake. Even the gel they write with is extra sugary goodness. There was only 1 year I did not eat this cake - it was the year my neighbor Charlie convinced me that the crunchies were made up of dead crushed ants. I still remind him of this... The soft serve ice cream is also amazing - be sure to get the rainbow sprinkles. The flying saucers are yummy as well as their other frozen treats. I only wish they still made the lalapooluza - soft serve ice cream rolled in rainbow sprinkles and then frozen. I hope this one stays in business because I can't imagine not having a treat each time I am home. Even though you can buy them in your freezer section there is nothing like going to Carvel to see your old friends Fudgie the Whale or Cookie Puss. read more

This Carvel Ice Cream Shop has been here for many, many years. My boyfriends favorite ice cream is soft-serve vanilla, and Carvel is his favorite. I remember going here with my grandparents for a cone or to pick out my birthday cakes, "Fudgie the Whale" on Father's Day and "Cookie Puss"for summer get-togethers. I like the original decor and even SMELL of this retro establishment when I walk in the door. I am immediately transported back to my childhood in that moment! LOL The owner is a very nice man and he is very appreciative of his long-time loyal Milford customers. However, the young staff is not always the best employee choice when it comes to delivering great customer service. Some of the girls can be very unenthusiastic, but I have had some that were very nice and smiling too. Unfortunately, I cannot believe how the prices have sky-rocketed through the years!! My bf and I got two cones tonight and it was like $9.00?? We went here to get a cake for his daughter last year, but we weren't going to buy their smallest cake for $40.00!! Yes the ice cream is good, I love the pistachio is my favorite, but it is expensive. So as a treat every so often, it is definitely worth the trip from Branford & West Haven. read more

Again, I have to send an update about a more recent experience. My family and I dread coming here for fear we will get one of the crabby employees who works for the nice guy Mike who owns the Milford establishment. To preface, we recently had two lovely girls wait on us over the summer and commented how nice it was to come in and see some friendly and polite help as that is so often not the case here. They laughed about it and seemed to understand my statements. Well, I swung by Carvel on Saturday, December 5, and allowed my two sons--age 13 and 7--to go in on their own as no one was in the store and I could watch from the car. My sons came back efficiently, and my older son was upset because the 'girl with brown hair" was so snotty to him. He said he ordered hot fudge sundae with CRUNCHIES. She made him a hot fudge sundae with cookie dough. He said he told her, "I asked for crunchies." to which she replied snottily, "NO YOU DIDN'T." Then he asked his brother, "Did I ask for cookie dough?" and my younger son, "Said no, you asked for crunchies." Again, she responded, "NO YOU DIDN'T!" She refused to make him a new sundae. Now I would on occasion doubt my son, but he never ever EVER orders cookie dough, so this doesn't make any sense to me. And how can you have such poor customer service that you won't fix it to give the customer what they want, even if it truly was their mistake. I wanted to immediately go in myself to rectify the situation and deal with it, but my son said, "It's ok. I'll eat it." This is not fair. Just because someone is 13 without a parent doesn't mean that they deserve poor customer service. Mike, please. . . work with your staff on being friendly and having good customer service. First of all, this place was not out of business. It's alive and semi-well. One of their freezers was broken though a sign says it's on it's way to bring repaired. They have lots and lots of ice cream cakes on display and you can get soft serve ice cream. Their small cup can easily be shared by two people, both in quantity and price ($2.99), and was tasty. They definitely have outstanding ice cream, but portion size depends on the mood of the person working that day, friendliness of the staff is varied from superb to downright miserable. After moving back from Los Angeles it is nice to have Carvel close by, however it would be even nicer if the people working there could have some consistency in how to treat their customers. read more

I was just at Carvel in Milford to buy my husband a surprise cake for earning his Masters in Business. I had a difficult day and thought it would be nice on my way home to do something good. When I arrived today 8/23, 2 girls who were scheduled during the time between 430PM and 5PM were in the facility. I was looking at the cakes when a girl very rudly stated that I couldn't stand where I was standing even though I was not in a restricted area or anything. I said I was just looking to get something nice for my husband and didn't know I was doing anything wrong. I felt terrible the way she looked at me and spoke to me. I asked why she was being so rude and spoke to me like that. She just shrugged her shoulders and stared at me very uncomfortably. I felt absolutely awful, so I told here I didn't want to buy anything and she just sat there and allowed me to walk out without trying to make it right. I was very upset my entire ride home. Allow me to state up front that I am an ice-cream snob so it would be hard for any chain to win me over. Service is fine here and the concoctions are as expected. If you like such things I'm sure they're downright tasty as some Yelpers have opined. I am rating two stars because I was mortified to discover that their ice cream cakes DON'T MELT!!! That's right - they don't melt at a normal rate of meltation (which I'm sure is not a word but I still like it). Now this may sound great to the frazzled mom who's hosting a gaggle of giggling elementary school kids for a birthday bash, or the folks at church who want to put out the potluck before service ends - convenience at its finest! But to anyone else who knows that thawing frozen milk should equal quickly-growing pile of liquid...this is scary stuff! What's in there that makes stay more firm and frozen than a Botoxed beauty's browline?? And whatever it is - should I really be ingesting it??? I've had other ice cream cakes before and this has never happened - they melt like normal ice cream. What gives, Carvel?? I'm sure a chemistry major could set me straight on what molecular voodoo makes this A-OK, but this foodie would still remain skeptical. This will haunt me until I uncover the answer. read more

I'm new to town. I love Carvel. The first few times I stopped here, it was great. However, I stopped in on the night of 1/27/2016 and the girl working was very rude. It really does detract from the experience and makes me not want to come back. If serving ice cream annoys you, then don't work at an ice cream parlor. I don't expect much... all I ask is that the staff be somewhat pleasant. - I usually tip. This time, I couldn't wait to just leave. - I will going back. The ice cream was still great. Everyone has bad days. Hopefully it doesn't happen again. I would encourage everyone to tip if you have a good experience. Insighting positivity also perpetuates it. read more

I absolutely love Carvel ice cream. I have been going there since i was tiny. The only thing, I agree with everyone else, the GIRLS ARE SOOOOOO VERY RUDE. I cant believe the owner cant see how these girls treat the customers., Sometimes when I get out of work, I stop by to get something, and the girls are sitting in their cars., or they have their friends there with them, sitting on the counter, not helping anybody, just giving us dirty looks. the ice cream is so good, i continue to keep coming back, but one day i will end up telling one of them off. Every time I take my children to carvel in Milford there is one girl in particular who has the most miserable look on her face. She wears hearing aids but she has keen eyesight. When a customer approaches the door she gets off the freezer that she sits on eating potato chips and darts into the back room to avoid helping her coworkers. We actually sat and observed her do this to several people tonight while we ate our ice cream. The line will build up and she waits till the last customer to jump in and help. I do not understand how she still has a job there because she is the rudest, most miserable young lady I have ever seen in a service job. read more

Awful, awful servce. The teenager girls who are left to run the store are rude, sit on the ice cream freezers and always fixing their hair while serving customers. Sanitary conditions are not real priorities here..The ice cream is usually the only saving quality of this location but recently even that has suffered.
