I still remember Carvel in it's heyday when there wasn't so much competition for frozen treats. Back then, Carvel and another place with '31 flavors' were the only games in town. There used to be one near my grandfather's apartment which is where my cousins and I would hang out when visiting. Those were good days but that was a long, long, long time ago. With so many artisan shops around these days, Carvel can sometimes be an afterthought. They don't specialize in very many flavors and to be quick honest the flavors they do have are kinda pedestrian. Carvel's chocolate ice cream just doesn't give me any reason to crave it but I do enjoy the vanilla based varieties including that highly artificial "pistachio". This location has an abundance of ice cream cakes in the freezer with various designs all ready for some quick celebration ink on top. They make good ice cream cakes even if those famous crunchies just don't crunch as much as they used to. The location also has those great pistachio flying saucers as a stand-alone six pack unlike other Carvel's which sometimes make me buy that chocolate variety that I not fond of along with Pistachio. For that reason, my review is a perfect 5 for not making me buy a flavor I don't like. They ended up charging me $19.57 for a small and medium sundae with 3 toppings each. After I returned to question this absurd amount, another girl alleged that we bought 3 sundaes. After having to retrieve the cups from the garbage and my wife explaining what happened, they still didn't believe us and started questioning my 6-year-old daughter. Grew up in the Whitestone neighborhood and this has been where my family and I get our birthday cakes, flying saucers and ice cream cones for as long as I can remember. I'm happy this has stuck around because nothing beats a classic Carvel birthday cake. Prices have unfortunately gone up over the years (perhaps due to increase in competition or its location), but anytime I'm back home, I always stop by to get a pack of flying saucers (I think it's about $8). Staff are always friendly and they have ample parking spaces in the lot (or street parking on the rare occasion that it is full, like on the weekends). Ordered a special cake a week in advance. Went to pick it up and was told to come back because the freezer was malfunctioning and my cake was half melted. It was really disappointing because I didn't have time to come back! I had a kids party to get to and the cake was being cut at a specific time. They refused to give me any kind of refund. It was either get no cake (and face a horde of kids cake-less) or take a soggy cake at full price. This lack of flexibility on a mess-up on their part is just unprofessional. When I shared this story with a friend they told me they don't use this Carvel for anything that isn't already in the display to be picked up because they are just not reliable. Lesson learned. We went to Carvel on a Monday night for three ice cream sundaes. I hadn't had Carvel since I was a teenager and my grandparents used to take me to Miami every winter. I had the Heath Sundae with Pralines and Cream ice cream. Here's the real reason this was fun. They had a Cooky Puss cake in the freezer. Do yourself a favor and go to a different Carvel. The young girl working here on the weekends was rude. Snotty attitude when I asked her a question. The flying saucer pricing was missed marked. When I checked out the price was not as listed. When I questioned it this girl got ALL defensive in a rude way. Listen, most of the time when an item in any store is mis marked the customer is given the listed price b/c it is considered "FALSE ADVERTISING" this inexperienced emloyee said in a rude tone "we ran out of labels." If that's the case please make a sign. If I didn't promise to bring these flying saucers to a party I would have NEVER made the purchase at this particular CARVEL. I think that this location is also very clean, and their products are always very fresh tasting. I have been to another local carvel a few times in which their sprinkles/crunches have a very stale taste to them...but not here. I love the different soft serve flavors they rotate here, especially the mint and the peanut butter...yummmm.
