While this says Carvel on the side, the guy running it does not stick to all carvel. Any purist who knows carvel will know that something is rotten in carveltown. He uses his own cake icing on carvel cakes. Carvel has it's own style of frosting that goes on it's cakes that complements their ice cream. Cake icing DOES NOT belong on carvel cakes. The place has a weak A/C running which results in your ice cream already melting as he hands it to you. Boo. The shake was good, and the selection is 250 flavors. Since milkshakes are already melted ice cream there is no worry there. Want real carvel- go to Jersey or NY and you will taste the real deal. read more

My best friend lives in VA. I just ordered from here for her birthday today and had it doordashed to her house. I have never been to Virginia or had Carvel. I ordered their cookie ice cream sandwiches and what I thought was a pint of chocolate ice cream with chocolate pieces. Attached is the image of what they're advertising but what she got was literally just a bowl of chocolate crumbs. And the packaging for the ice cream cookies was labeled "flyer saucers" and they crossed it out with sharpie since that's not the item in there. I like ordering from local places for her but this place is not the one. Hopefully it tastes good at least but she's throwing away a $8 bowl of chocolate crumbs because she has no use for them. Carvel has a special place in my heart seeing as how their cakes were always my birthday cake. Where I live now, they don't exist. So my friend knowing how much I love Carvel ice cream took me here for treat. When I get to the window, I was semi-friendly greeted by an associate. I was looking for the Chocolate volcano (hard vanilla & chocolate ice cream with the crunchies), they didn't have it. So I asked for the triple chocolate brownie ice cream with the blue writing they use on the cake. They refused to put the blue writing (which the manager literally had in hand on top of my order). I was even willing to pay for it, but rather than asking they just flat out said no. Super rude. I was literally in NJ a week ago and order my ice cream (and it was the flavor I wanted) the same way, was given service with a smile. This place can kick rocks. Their customer service was horrible. I was standing there by the left window, the only customer at the time, waiting for quite a long time while the two vendors were chatting inside the store. The young lady saw me, but completely ignored me. Then a white woman with her kids shows up and stops by the right window. She gets immediate service. I looked at the young lady vendor again with a look of surprise for not taking my order, then she signs to me to come to the right window. Really, you couldn't tell me before? Why isn't there a sign letting people know that they only take orders from the right window? I wasn't going to make a fuss, so I calmly lined up behind this white woman with her kids who received immediate attention. My turn came, but the boy closed the window and checked if there were any customers waiting inside the store (because you can also order from the counter inside). Really? You saw me waiting for my turn right behind the lady! So finally, he reopened the window and I finally got to place my order. While paying for my order, a white guy came up to the window with his dog. But, he went to the window on the left side, the one where I was completely ignored and where they said they don't serve you from. I was about to kindly warn him so that he doesn't waste his time, but then who opened the window? The young lady vendor! Yes, the very one who ignored me, the very person who signaled with her finger (because I wasn't worthy of her words) that they only serve from the right window! But it was ok to serve that young guy, not me. When the other vendor came back with my order, I told him to let his colleague know that what she did was not appropriate, but he responded with inaudible excuses and babbled some who knows what, which were of no interest to me at the time. I walked away. I had enough of it. I used to love that place. There used to be super nice guys working in there who even used to remember my orders. I always order a kid size cone and a Sunday ($15 by the way!). Can you bring those nice guys back? See my glorious previous review, 5 years ago. This review is long overdue. My husband and I wanted a carvel ice cream cake for our wedding. This place is absolutely amazing and they exceeded our cake vision! We first went to a local carvel cake in gaithersburg Maryland and it was a joke. The guy had made us a demo cake that looked as if a toddler made it for fun. This location in Virginia had beautiful cakes and I couldn't believe how wonderful of an experience we had dealing with the creator. He is passionate about his work and really made us feel like our special day was unique. Our guests loved every second of it and we had leftovers for months! Love Carvel. A little disappointed with this location. The regular cones are not as big as the other locations. And it's a fairly expensive cone, about $4 and it was skimpy. I'd come back if I was in the area, but would much rather go to another Carvel if I had the choice. Service was okay. Parking can be a pain. After having plenty of late night eats from shared-restaurant-space Mario's Pizza house, I had yet to pay Carvel a visit for ice cream, let alone an ice cream cake. With the recent addition of Nutella to their menu, I had to add them as a potential option for my brother's birthday cake. He has always been ice cream cake faithful over the years, DQ specifically, and after a disappointing effort from the Herndon location (three weeks ago), I wanted to try another business as a surprise SECOND birthday cake. While shopping around to other stores exploring my birthday cake options, I found Carvel to have the most reasonable, ice cream cake options available as well as custom decorating exclusive to the Virginia Square location. I simply walked-in on a Saturday, requested to the clerk I was interested in purchasing said cake and they directed me to Tuhin. Although his somewhat direct approach may be off putting to some, I welcomed it as he asked those questions that would help HIM decide what would be the right cake size and combination for me. Tuhin was not only knowledgeable about what would best suit my needs but also provided various options in the event I was leaning one way or the next. He also showed me countless pictures of what his store has provided clients in the past and what all they are capable of accomplishing. I was pleasantly surprised at what I saw! After a few additional store-stops, Carvel and Tuhin's decorations could not be matched so that is where I went. The Nutella/chocolate cake was ready when requested, had exactly the decorations (lettering, numbering, icing, etc.) as discussed and was exactly the quoted price (zero additional fee or undisclosed price increase). I'll gladly go back and order a Carvel cake from Tuhin. Probably the Nutella/chocolate combo as well! read more

Loved this place before I moved to DC and even when I come back to visit from New York, this Carvel know's how to make a shake! Yeah its a bit shady especially next to the hooker motel next door but the service is prompt and they aren't cheap on the ice cream scoops. They share the place with Mario's, its weird to have refrigerators for the ice cream and then huge ovens and grills 5 feet away. They do take cc now and they also have a ATM machine inside. Suggestions? Try the Chocolate Chunk/Brownie/Fudge either as a scoop or in a shake, the same goes for the Mint Chocolate Chip. read more

I've been to Carvel previously to get a Fudgy the Whale for our company - we are big fans of our good friend Fudgy! Recently I placed an order for a car cake and I was surprised by how thoughtful the staff was to make sure I knew all the different ways I could get it customized (choose your own colors, write a message, and some other stuff I don't even remember) and were thoughtful to make sure it would serve the right number of people. They even went over my coupons to make sure I used the best one. This location also goes out of their way to reward repeat business. The one reason I can't give this place five stars YET is because of a conversation I had with one of them encouraging me to leave a positive review so they could give me a 6-pack of "UFOs" as a freebie. After I expressed reservation, in the end he said he'd give me the freebie whether or not I wrote the review, so yay :) Now, if I hear that they've stopped soliciting reviews this way, I'll try and figure out how to update this review to a five-star later on. Boyfriend wanted ice cream cake for his birthday. I remembered the yummy Carvel cake I'd had years and years ago. I went with them instead of Cold Stone Creamery, whose staff seemed to be aloof when I called to inquire about pricing. The cake wasn't as good as I remember. There were less chocolate crunchy thingees. Those matter to me. Boo and hiss! Don't go cheap on the crunchies! Everyone else seemed to like it though, and asked for seconds. Not a bad deal. Pretty large sheet cake for $35. The location is a little blah though. Right beside a pizza shop. Like, i mean the pizza shop shares a door and everything with Carvel. So that nice ice cream smell that typically greets you at the door of an ice cream shop -- null and void. Delicious though a tad pricey ice cream. I haven't ordered an ice cream cake from them but when I went with my husband we ended up getting a banana split. It had chocolate and vanilla soft serve and a choice of 3 toppings. They have so many flavor choices here it might take a while to make a decision. I would definitely come back but it's more of a special occasion type thing because the banana split was almost 7 dollars. Needing a reprieve from the heat, I walk down to Carvel. I wanted (needed!) a shake. It took me forever to figure out what I wanted to order because there were at least 50 shakes listed on their shake menu. I finally decided on a chocolate raspberry shake, which was prepared quickly (and devoured just as quickly in this heat). It's not a cute novelty shop where you can sit down inside and enjoy your ice cream, though there are a few benches outside. It is decent enough to grab something on the go in this heat. I received a coupon for a free small ice cream cone for my 27th birthday today. Showed an employee the coupon where he proceeded to tell me I needed it printed out and refused to honor it. I stopped in to purchase an ice cream cake for a friend. When the gentleman behind the counter rang me up, I was told the cake was $43.99. When I asked him about the price to make sure I heard that correctly, he clearly took offense and responded with "some people use 99 cent flour to make cakes and charge $40." This was an 8 inch cake that serves 8-10 people and retails for about $20 at any grocery store. Lesson learned. I will never return to this store. read more

Just fine; will fill your ice cream fix, but all you need to remember is Sundae Dasher. Get it, and you'll be fat and happy. Bf got the peanut butter one and it was incredible. I made the mistake of getting their hard ice cream, as opposed to soft serve, and the other reviewers are right--the hard ice cream isn't worth the calories to finish it. FYI: Don't park in Pio Pio no matter how desperate you are--I watched someone get towed immediately! Also, this place takes credit card, thank god. The place is mashed together with two other restaurants and though the Carvel counter appeared to be open nobody was there. I stood around for five minutes and then left. I went in to use my LivingSocial coupon for $20 toward a cake. The guy asked me how many other coupons I bought, an I told him "2". He responded saying, "only 2?! Well make sure you use them before June 23rd because they expire then." I was pretty impressed by the fact that he actively encouraged me to use the coupons I bought.
