Charles did an incredibly great job on my 2002 Chevy Avalanche. My tranny was on its last legs -- leaking like a sieve, bang-shifting, flaring. I investigated having a re-manufactured unit installed, but the prices and bad reviews ruled that out. My mechanic, Jim Crissman, recommended that I call Cartrans, which I did. (Jim uses Cartrans so much that he rattled off the phone number from memory, which I thought was a good indication of reliability!) Charles' price for the rebuild was excellent, as was the quality of the work Cartrans did on my truck -- the thing shifts so smoothly and effortlessly now, it's amazing. But not only that, he found and replaced a damaged power steering hose, AND tightened a loose oil drain plug that some idiot (I must have gotten distracted by something...) hadn't fully tightened at the last oil change -- which means he quite possibly saved me from cratering my engine! This was not to be a temporary fix. My husband works right across the way. This was to be a permanent fix and you guys knew that. Not once were we ever told this was a temporary solution just to get us to the next mechanic, especially not for what we paid. It's interesting how you guys change your story so many times with us. I don't get the negative reviews. Charles does not suffer fools with unrealistic expectations gladly, so that could be part of the problem. I'm an engineer with an automotive background and I found Charles when I worked close to his location. Even now that I don't work in Stafford any longer, if feasible I will still drop a vehicle off from where I live in Cypress. In addition to a complete transmission rebuild, I've had Cartrans do various suspension and brake work I didn't feel like doing myself, two alternators (one was under warranty which Charles honored, nothing wrong with the work, just a new AC Delco alternator failing after a year). I had my stepson take his Dodge there when it was running poorly, he showed up with a name brand shop estimate of over $2000, Charles got it running great and the bill was under $400. Charles is a mechanic; he figures out whats wrong and fixes it. Most places are "parts swappers", i.e. they pull a trouble code and then replace everything associated with that trouble code. I've never had any issues with anger, it's not the cleanest or most organized shop I've been in and that's why 4 stars instead of 5, but he's a well seasoned, knowledgeable and fair mechanic. Maybe its because I "speak the language" and usually drop the car off with clear instructions on what I want done that we get along, but my experience is the complete opposite of what else I'm reading on here. If you want your car repair experience to be one of a clean, well lit waiting area with snacks and soft drinks and a ride home, then this isn't the place for you. If you want good quality work you can trust from someone who will stand behind it then go here. read more

The owner Charles is an angry old man. I guess because he didn't make as much money as he felt he deserved. I brought my Jag in because I thought the trans was not perfect. He said it seems OK but to be sure would cost $1000 minimum just to start with the valve body. I declined as the car was worth no more than $4K. He had kept the car for a week which didn't bother me, and then treated me poorly when I asked for an explanation of what he found. At one stage when I pressed for more information he got so angry that he told me I must be speaking a different language than him. Newsflash buddy. You do speak a different language when talking about the technical aspects of your business. I'm sorry I didn't know that the oil pan did not need a new gasket when taken off. I told him that if one takes off a part with a gasket anywhere else on the engine it is usually prudent to change said gasket. Apparently those rules do not apply with the transmission. Something to do with oil circulates in the engine but not in the tranny. How would a layman know this or even if he was being truthful. I had checked online and there is clearly a gasket. AutoZone would have sold me one for $70 etc. He offered another reason.... the pan and gasket come as one unit and gasket is reusable. Maybe he is right but it was just the pissey way he explained it. I asked him again what codes he saw. He went to the car, plugged in his scanner and hurriedly spoke out the codes. I could not write down the info because he was going so fast. He then had the balls to tell me that he normally charges $80 just to scan the codes. I have no doubt the man knows his stuff, but why would you do business with someone like this? I'm sorry he didn't think he made his maximum return from me. I hate to tell him that offering quotes is usually a first step in a process to build a rapport with a customer. I can't tell you how many times in my own business we spent an hour or two quoting, and explaining, with NO REWARD. Why would I go back and feel like a shit when he feels he didn't make enough money off me? Or wondering if the bill really reflected the time actually spent on my car as opposed to him having to charge me so much to make up for the fact he can't get enough business and needs to make the mortgage payment off my vehicle. read more

I called Cartrans after the Ford dealership (cough..Helfman..cough) told me my Ford Explorer Sport Trac transmission could not be repaired or rebuilt, and that I would need a new one at around $3700.. Charles @ Cartrans said any transmission can be rebuilt. I left my truck with him and he did the rebuild for around $1900. runs good as new now. It's been a couple of months since he did the work. I read reviews of transmission shops doing lousy repairs for a lot of money, but Cartans gets it done right. read more
