This spot is a little off the freeway but a welcome break from a long drive. The little chalet is off the beaten path, but located in a beautiful little pocket of Mauston. The yard has a cute fireplace area, and inside is a cute shop with great treasures. Everything in the shop is fresh and local, from their cheeses to the honey, soup mixes and trinkets. They often have samples on hand, but the prices for the fresh cheese can't be beat. I love the Kasa Crema, and Autumn Harvest Cheddar, but there are so much more I want to try. Can't wait for my next trip home to swing by this place! read more

Hands down the best cheese curds I've ever had is from Carr Valley Cheese. The shop is packed with a huge variety of, you guessed it, cheese! So many varieties!!! I unfortunately stopped about 10 minutes before closing time on a Monday. I was the only visitor and the girl (looked like a teenager) was seemingly anxious to leave. I know that feeling. Luckily I knew exactly what I wanted and was in and out in about 3 minutes. I would have loved to spent more time looking at the varieties but I had to get back on the road. The smoked string cheese is beyond 5 stars - so, so good. I'll definitely be back to have more of an "experience." And buy 10lbs of cheese curds and smoked string cheese ;) read more

This is the best cheese in the world. Yes, that's a bold claim-- but I'm prepared to make it. I live in Chicago, and every summer I hope for at least one road trip that will take me near Mauston. They have the absolute best, freshest, squeakiest cheese curds you'll ever have the pleasure of devouring. The rest of their cheese is great too. But for my money, I'm buying a bag of curds, a package or pretzels, and a pile of landjaeger sausages for first-rate snacking! Do not be fooled by this tiny hut in a Best Western parking lot! This is a pretty great little factory store on Highway 12 in Mauston. There's a window on one end of the shop where you can peek at the equipment and a bit of information throughout the shop about the cheeses and how they're made. You can sample most of the cheeses and the prices are pretty reasonable. They're just off of I94 and definitely worth a visit if you like cheese and are on your way to the Dells. read more

It tried to stop here a few years ago but wasn't able to because the bankers were jealous of their store hours. That's no longer true since a new store manager expanded the hours. I'm glad she did because this is a very special place. Carr Valley Cheese operates several factories, each one specializes in different varieties of cheese. They're all gathered here in the factory store, located just southeast of Mauston on US 12. The wide variety of cheeses is impressive, as is the service. Samples greet you as you enter, including a featured "cheese of the month" which this month was Reserve Gouda - and it was Gouda them to offer samples. We bought the Reserve Gouda along with garlic cheddar, goat cheese, and, of course, cheese curds that squeak on your teeth. How about butter from sheep's milk or goat's milk? Give it a try before you buy! You'll find a myriad of gift items (Wisconsin dairy-themed refrigerator magnets, coffee mugs, cheese serving tools, candies, honey, and other surprises Have your picture taken sitting on a cow or a spotted rocker. Carr Valley Cheese is not too far off I-90/94 and well worth the short detour. This is seriously good cheese from a serious cheese maker. Stop there, you'll thank me later. read more

I drove 45 minutes from home to get some smoked gouda and brick cheese, I was at the factory in Marston. They were out of smoked gouda and had a sliver of brick cheese left. Very disappointing! Bought the sliver of brick and left, I will never buy anything from there again. read more

I stopped by the Carr Valley factory on my drive home to Columbus, OH from Eau Clair, WI. As a cheese fanatic, I went a little crazy. I bought as many different cheeses, spreads, and curds that I could fit in my ice chest. The variety is quite impressive. I tasted the Swiss Almond and Blue Cheese spreads. They were fantastic. I didn't try anything else because I was under a time constraint to get home in one day. The ladies and gentleman working up front and in the factory that I met were so friendly. I was of course going to purchase cheese curds which I heard needed to be squeaky when you chewed on them. I was informed that to insure the curds were squeaky, I needed to keep them at room temperature. Lydia said that she kept hers out of the refrigerator for 3 days to guarantee maximum squeakiness. When I got home that night, the curds were wonderfully squeaky and yummy. After having deep fried curds and now fresh curds, there is no other way to enjoy them, in my opinion, than fresh. Well, I think the counter staff was pretty amazed with the amount of product that I was piling on the counter. All told I spent over $300-worth every penny. They ship their product, so once I am done with my stash, I plan to order more. I highly recommend you stop by the Carr Valley factory if you find yourself traveling along the I-94 in Southwest Wisconsin. Those who live in Mauston or live close by are a lucky lot. read more
