First, parking can be a bit tricky. Decor is pretty cool and modern. Waitress was nice and checked on us a couple of times. Mango Chamoy Margarita - It was good, but don't know why they got that bar out front, but she made my drink in the back. Guacamole - This was made a bit different than I am used too. A bit bland for me since I needed salt and I usually don't use it. Mix Plate - (Carnitas & Barbacoa) - Barbacoa was pretty good. Carnitas, I got the mix which came with the skin. A piece still had hair on it, which is off putting. Came with rice, grilled jalapenos and nopales salad which was different. Caldo De Res - My guy liked it. Overall, it was okay and maybe a tad on the pricier side.

A flight of tacos, the chefs special. Mine was steak, above was my friends pork tacos. Mmmm. Best quality ever.

Went here with a buddy to celebrate my birthday a week early. We both had 3 taco dinner, a chefs special. I had steak and he had the pork. We also had fresh guacamole appetizer which was awesome. Only thing we both wished that everything was spicier with heat. Other than that, totally awesome. Waitress was Maricela and she was a real people person

This place has been my favorite carnita spot for years!!! And I am glad to see the super upgrade! Food is delicious and service was perfection. Come and check out the space and culture

The Chef's Special Carnitas Tacos. It comes with 3 tacos but I always get an extra taco.

Was in the area and was looking for a new place to try and stumbled across this place. Walked in the decor is nice and the smell of carnitas is in the air. I had the Chef's Special Carnitas and This was very good and the difference between this and the regular taco dinner are the extra garnishes and chicharrones which definitely adds to the flavor. My fiance had their steak dinner and it was okay. The steak could of used a bit more flavor. We wanted to have 2 specific margaritas but they didn't have the ingredients so we settled for something else and It was good. This place is very good & I will come back again and maybe they will have the ingredients for the Margaritas we wanted

My boyfriend and I came here for dinner on a Saturday and sat outside on the patio. Both the inside and outside are well decorated with vibrant colors, and the ambiance is very chill and relaxing, as well as the music. Everything was pretty much perfect, from the complimentary chips and salsa, meals and drinks, to the service. I ordered the chef's special with three tacos de carnitas and he ordered tacos de asada, we were both satisfied. I had the pineapple and jalapeno margarita and it was soooooo good!! The waitress was super attentive and just added to the great experience we were already having. We've been to a lot of restaurants and Don Rafa is definitely one of our new favorites! We will definitely be back.

Was much, much better when it was on 46th and Kedzie. Much smaller menu. No one spoke English when we were there. Besides us Gringos the only other person there was a pre-teen who was obviously the son of one of the wait staff. Won't be going back, though we went to Kedzie often.

Rice bowl served in my own plate to conserve plastic. Half barbacoa, half calabacitas. Delicious.

My multi-tenant office building (700 Commerce, Oak Brook) has a system where they have a different food vendor each day ("Fooda PopUp"). It's a great idea, but some of the vendors are seriously lacking. I was very happy that today it was Don Rafa. The food was delicious and the portions were generous. I had a rice bowl served on my own plate (to conserve plastic). I had a rice bowl with half barbacoa and half calabacitas. Delicious and such a good value.

Use to go to the old location when I was a little girl and loved it. Came to the new location for the first time today and was not disappointed. Great food and atmosphere like I remember, glad that carried over to the new location.

As much as it was packed from 2:30 til 3:30 we were still were able to order a drink at bar. Martin was so nice and took our order and brought it to us being we went back to waiting line. The place is small with a hard time to walk around when it's full. It's a nice bar restaurant and didn't realized until we were leaving that there's a back area. The bartenders could be a little more social and happy bc that seem a bit dull and unhappy working there. Unlike Martin he was happy. Mildred was our server and she did phenomenal. We stood at the door for about 20 minutes before someone finally told us the wait would be 1-2 hours. Keep in mind, the place is pretty small and already crowded, so there's barely any room to stand while you wait. After getting on the waitlist, we decided to go to a nearby spot for food--but not even 5 minutes later, we got called back saying our table was ready. When we returned, we were seated along the wall in a very tight space--so tight that if I stretched my arm out, I would've hit the person next to me. We noticed a large table nearby had been sitting for a while without food. When their food finally came out, it made us realize our wait would probably be even longer. After another 20 minutes passed and we still hadn't been able to order, we decided to leave. I'm not sure the space is fully ready for the rush right now--it feels overcrowded and service is slow. I'll give it another try once the hype dies down. I'm happy for their success, though--just be prepared to be patient when you go.

Starting with margaritas (because obviously ‍), queso and chips that were dangerously good, and the chicken empanadas that came out perfectly crispy with so much flavor. We kept looking at each other after every bite like "okay wait... THIS is the best thing here" and then another plate would arrive and prove us wrong again The carnitas fried rice??? I genuinely cannot stop thinking about it. So savory, flavorful, comforting, and packed with crispy carnitas on top with the eggs and pickled onions... literally unreal. And then the skirt steak tacos absolutely stole the show. The steak was cooked perfectly, packed with flavor, and paired so perfectly with all the toppings and sauces. Every single bite tasted fresh and homemade in the best way possible. And can we talk about the ambience for a second because WOW. The music, the energy, the vibe inside, everyone celebrating, the drinks flowing -- it felt like the perfect Cinco de Mayo dinner spot. The service was also AMAZING from start to finish and made the entire experience even better. One of those dinners where you leave already talking about when you're coming back If you're looking for the place to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, date night, tacos & margaritas, or honestly just an incredible dinner in general... this is IT

When we tried them we realized she accidentally gave us each other's. No big deal but it happened again with the food when a different server brought it out. She stopped once to take our order and once to bring the drinks. That's it. We did not get checked on until we were already almost done with our food. Cute patio. Inside seating wasn't busy at all.

Appetizers were quac and chips, and shrimp ceviche. The guac was really good, but the ceviche was the star. Served on a bed of cucumbers, it was visually beautiful, and the flavor was fresh and complex. There was also a LOT of it. We ended up taking some home. Entrees were steak and shrimp for me, and Tampiquena for my friend. In both dishes, the steak was done to perfection. The sauce that came with my shrimp was spicy and deep--lots of flavor layers there. Both of us took home portions of our meals because there was a lot of food on the plates. Finally, the service--the servers are attentive without hovering. If we needed something, they were there, but never intrusive. It is hard to believe this is a little neighborhood spot, given the service and the quality of the food. It was not too busy tonight--we ate early--but I recommend reservations. It is very popular with the neighborhood. Bottom line, we each had 2 margaritas, appetizers, and entrees, and our bills with tip were around $105.00 each--totally worth it! Only real negatives were that they did not offer any draft beer options and the Chips y Salsa ($3.75) had a meager quantity of chips to eat their tasty and generous tomatillo and 3-chile salsa options. Would actually go 4.5 stars based on those 2 factors, but gave the benefit of the extra half star due to how good our service was and the excellent flavor of the veggie sandwich.
