What stands out to me the most about the Harvest Market are the friendly staff and the selection of groceries. We were greeted right away by several employees saying good morning or just asking if they could assist in finding anything. Grocery-wise, the store seemed pretty standard and had much of the same stuff we have back home. With a few exceptions: the baking aisle was full of wonderful options and fresh ingredients. Three full racks of spices and herbs, several different types of masa from commercially branded to a local store mix just name a couple. Makes me want to run home and make tamales! We would've bought more goodies for sure here if we hadn't been traveling on. The bakery section is clearly stocked by a kindred spirit. Lots of maple bars, maple donuts, M&Ms and sprinkled donuts and cookies, even giant rice crispy treats! The big find were Sponch cookies- those delectable pink and white marshmallow cookies rolled in coconut... so good! A few sweet childhood memories flooding back for sure. We found exactly what we needed and few extras. Would I shop here again? Yes. All and all, it was a good visit to the store. Much more than we were expecting of a local neighborhood grocery store. Surprisingly great! Good selection of groceries and friendly helpful staff. Awesome! Word to the wise though: Just get what you need or want and check out. Don't look at the restroom.

My family and I had one of the most absurd and frustrating grocery store experiences I've ever seen…read moreat Blanton's Grocery Store. My aunt (44) and uncle were using the self-checkout and bought a case of beer. Instead of simply checking the ID of the person purchasing the alcohol, the employee demanded to see the ID of everyone standing anywhere nearby. My aunt, who is clearly well over 21, was forced to show ID even though she wasn't the one paying. Then my sister (24) and her boyfriend (32) were also told they had to show ID just for standing nearby. They actually had to walk all the way back outside to their vehicle just to grab their IDs to satisfy this ridiculous demand. The part that really pushed things over the edge is that my sister's boyfriend is a U.S. veteran who was injured while serving our country. It's incredibly ironic that someone can be 18 years old and old enough to enlist, risk their life, and serve the United States, but this same person gets treated like a criminal and harassed in a grocery store just to prove they're over 21 while standing next to family members buying groceries. And somehow the situation still got more ridiculous. I was standing by the doorway waiting for my family and I was also asked for ID, despite not even being part of the transaction. Every single person involved was clearly and obviously over 21. This didn't feel like someone responsibly following policy. It felt like a teller on a complete power trip who decided to make things difficult for absolutely no reason. I've worked in customer service and hospitality for over 8 years, including time in a grocery store, so I understand alcohol laws and regulations. Verifying the purchaser's age is standard practice. But demanding ID from every adult in the general vicinity, even someone standing by the door, is beyond excessive and completely unnecessary. The irony is we walked across the street to the gas station afterward and had zero issues. Blanton's managed to turn a simple grocery stop into an unnecessarily hostile experience. If this is how management chooses to treat customers, don't be surprised when people take their business elsewhere.

It's hard to explain how cool this little grocery is. I made it here by happenstance. I was…read moreMabton-bound on the 4th of July (Yup, that's right. Mabton's gangsta firework show can hold its own to any big city fireworks!). There was a "big" grocery store just off the small highway, but I decided to drive a block or two into "downtown" Mabton, and happened upon Su Mercadito. This grocery is like taking a trip to Mexico. Situated in a fairly old building on "Main Street Mabton", this is a tiny store, but it has un corazón grande. In this tiny space, there is so much packed in. Sensory overload is definitely on the menu when you walk around. HEARING: There was Mexican music blaring on the speakers (Love it). SIGHT: There are so many items and colors for one to look at here. I could have spent an hour here in this tiny shop, but I didn't want to be one of "those" gringos! SMELL: There was a small carniceria (meat shop) inside here along with a tub of oysters near the entrance, and they smelled fresh. TOUCH: Although I was clearly a stranger here, I felt pretty welcome by the other customers and the staff here. TASTE: Didn't taste anything until later, but I should say that the cans of Tecate and the habenero chips were party hits. So yes, as I walked in the grocery, I was surprised by the amount of people in this small out of the way store. I made a bee-line for the freezer in the back (grabbed a 12-pack of Tecate for $12). While cerveza shopping, piñatas swung in the breeze above me. I liked how most of the products on the shelves were in Spanish. As I was checking out, the woman at the register talked to me in Spanish, and I had to reply in English. She smiled and then switched to English, too. (man, it should be illegal for me to not know Spanish at my age!). She was very nice and helpful. She even translated the name of the store: Su Mercadito :::: "Your Little Store" * * And I'm glad it is
