The owner, Fred (Alfred) is a friendly swiss man who must be in his 80's. He has a thick swiss accent, but that only makes sense considering the name of the store! During my discussion with Fred, I found out that he started working with meat in the mid 60's. He started the Matterhorn Meat Shop in 1975 and has been doing it ever since. He told me that he got into the business because he enjoyed doing it, not because of the money! I was excited to try a get a feel for the quality here, so I decided to trying a little bit of several items: Jerky ($16/95/lb): Very good. He keeps it frozen, but it's been great once it's thawed. It's a bit on the thicker side, but I'd get some again. Jerky is always expensive, but this seemed pretty reasonable. Gothaer Zervelat - It's basically a german salami. It's an oblong shape and has a pretty good smoke flavor to it. If you're into salami, try some of this! Knockwurst - I haven't tried it yet, but I'm told that its the swiss version of a hot dog. It looks similar to a brat. Spicy Sausage - A bit milder than I would like, but delicious! Mild Sausage - Delightful! A fairly standard sausage, but worth trying. Landjaeger - Its quite a bit different that the other ones that I've had. Based on my experience here, I can't imagine that this is anything but 100% authentic. They are pretty big, but the flavor is mild and worth trying. Bring cash - I'm not sure if he accepts credit cards or not. I think that his register is the same one that he had in 1975, which is awesome! My only regret is that I didn't discover the Matterhorn Meat Shop earlier. This is undoubtedly on it's way to becoming one of my favorite shops around!

They will tell you as much or as little as you want about the peppers, offer suggestions if you want or leave you alone to pick. If you can't find a pepper you want just ask, they have multiple fields going each summer. They have a farm store if you don't want to pick your own produce but you obviously pay more for that. Bring your own buckets/bags/boxes for the U-Pick, have separate containers going for different categories of peppers, and wear shoes that you can get muddy. They recently started a fb and Instagram account but aren't quick in returning questions so calling their store is still the easiest. Taking a bell pepper from a local farm out of the freezer in December is WAY better than paying $3 for one at the grocery store.

Having grown up in California, I remember walking in to the bakery with my parents only to be greeted by the sweet aroma of fresh baked bread. I would always choose my favorite piece and watch it closely in the bag all the way home. In an attempt to find some authentic bread, we were headed to a chain store that would surely sell less than suitable bread to spark memories. By chance we found La Petunia. We were greeted by Don Rosas and quickly and eagerly I went on a rampage picking out my own bread. As a side note, it is quite common for there to be a butcher shop within a small bodega store, as was the case here. We din't buy meat so I will ignore it. Regardless. With the ovens that cook the bread in the background still whirring and having chosen and tasted some churros and a small piece of bread here and there we were off. The bread is the freshest and closest thing to my childhood market bread that I have ever tasted in Washington State and in California. 10/10 would highly recommend and will even consider driving all the way to Yakima just for this bread. As a side note, the taco truck outside is equally delicious!
