We sauntered on down here a few weeks ago after hearing the folklore surrounding the tortillas and salsa. The place isn't much to look at from the outside and the selection of stuff inside is pretty average, however- The tortillas lived up to the hype! After entering, pull a Toucan Sam (for those who still know what commercials are!) and follow that nose to the back corner of the store where the these carb laden spheres of joy come off a conveyor belt and into a basket, hot and fresh! Once packaged, they sweat a little because they worked hard to get off that rack and into your mouth! The salsa is also quite good- not the most incredible we've ever had, but certainly work checking out with the tortillas! All said and done, the made fresh tortillas and salsa make it worth the drive every so often! read more

For the last couple of weeks I've been living off of quesadillas. Not because I'm trying to relive my college days, but because I've found a little joint that makes and sells amazing homemade flour tortillas. I've heard of this joint from a few people, so it had been on my radar. On a cold wintery morning, I made it a point to drive off the beaten path and into the City of Murals (Toppenish, WA) to seek out Blue Sky Market. The market looks fairly meager and ordinary from the outside. It's in a quiet little neighborhood away from the mural-ly clad businesses of downtown Toppenish. Walking in, this establishment appeared like your typical corner store market---well it was a market with cool cumbia playing in the background. But within seconds my nose perked up. It led me to the back corner of the store. Back here, there was a shelf filled with freshly made and packaged tortillas. And right next to it was the machine which makes the tortillas. Two short women were busy making magic. When they saw me being nosy, one of them tossed me a package of tortillas. They were still warm to the touch. I ended up grabbing three packages (each had 10 tortillas in them). You can tell these are some good ones. The tortillas are nice and thick. And when I used them to make quesadillas and burritos, I quickly became a legit maker of Mexican cuisine with tons of street cred. And all I had to do was spend a few dollars for tortillas. I'm down for this, any day. There is also home-made salsa here as well. So if you are in the area, do stop by and pick up some excellent tortillas. What stands out to me the most about the Harvest Market are the friendly staff and the selection of groceries. We were greeted right away by several employees saying good morning or just asking if they could assist in finding anything. Grocery-wise, the store seemed pretty standard and had much of the same stuff we have back home. With a few exceptions: the baking aisle was full of wonderful options and fresh ingredients. Three full racks of spices and herbs, several different types of masa from commercially branded to a local store mix just name a couple. Makes me want to run home and make tamales! We would've bought more goodies for sure here if we hadn't been traveling on. The bakery section is clearly stocked by a kindred spirit. Lots of maple bars, maple donuts, M&Ms and sprinkled donuts and cookies, even giant rice crispy treats! The big find were Sponch cookies- those delectable pink and white marshmallow cookies rolled in coconut... so good! A few sweet childhood memories flooding back for sure. We found exactly what we needed and few extras. Would I shop here again? Yes. All and all, it was a good visit to the store. Much more than we were expecting of a local neighborhood grocery store. Surprisingly great! Good selection of groceries and friendly helpful staff. Awesome! Word to the wise though: Just get what you need or want and check out. Don't look at the restroom.
