Tamale, tacos, and pozole. Que rico!
Tracy A.

Definitely some quality food at a price point that makes my billfold break out in applause. The tacos pastor were generously filled and flavorful. The tamale roja was a spicy pork mixture stuffed inside a moist masa. One tamale was quite large and prepared Guatemalan style wrapped in plantain leaf as opposed to corn husk. It was the weekend, (pozole, menudo, and tamales only on weekends) so we were able to try the pozole which was of the pork variety, and the broth had such a nice seasoned flavor. We washed it down with an agua jamaica (hibiscus water) and then did a little shopping through the grocery. The produce and aisles were neat and organized, and the tienda offered a large variety of galletas (cookies) which I was more than happy to check out for dessert.

Great hole in the wall place. Really fresh food for a great price, and there's a market within the store to check out as well.

I also got 3 pounds of chicken legs and two of the pork fritters because they were $1.50 today. The young man who helped me was very helpful and let me swap out one of the items. he also let me know where their meat was sourced from. I believe they said the pork and chicken was from Delphi and the beef was from Midwest. They were all friendly while very busy. After I ordered, there was a large group of people, so I guess I got in at a good time! I loved my last bundle and I'm sure this one's going to be equally as good. The prices May be going up a little bit shortly, but right now they're honoring the prices that are listed on the boards. They also go through each of the orders with you to make sure you have every item in your bundles. Go check it out!

I've struggled with how to rate and review Goose the Market for a long time…read more I've struggled mightily. It's an Indianapolis icon in many ways. It's beloved. And listen, it's not the most wheelchair friendly place in the world. If you're a wheelchair user, you're in all likelihood not going to the cellar unless you're extraordinary with you're chair or you crawl. I remember attending a Yelp event here, and I just wrestled with these issues so much. It's not inaccessible - you can get in the door, though even the parking is a bit wonky and the curb-cuts a bit worn. This is an older building in an older neighborhood. So yeah, if you're a wheelchair user plan ahead. I am a wheelchair user. And I suppose I should knock off my usual 1-star for accessibility issues. But, I just can't do it. I, instead, choose to go 5-stars with my narrative disclaimer that there are accessibility issues here. But, my word. This is a great place and every single experience I've had with Goose the Market, including last night's Italian Film Festival, has been stellar whether I'm in their location or at an event they are catering. What is Goose the Market? First off, nearly everyone considers it one of the best - Indianapolis Monthly, Eater, Yelp, etc. Goose the Market offers a daily menu of sandwiches, soups, gelato, and small plates. It offers raw beef, pork, poultry, game, seafood, in-house made sausage/smoked meats, and more. It offers charcuterie - both in-house and from other producers. It offers farmstead cheeses, fresh produce, artisan breads, preserves, sauces, pickles, pasta, crackers, flours/grains, and a lot more. There's the cellar - Enoteca bar with Italian style wine by the glass and small plates (and it has all-ages seating). Goose the Market offers a wine of the month club, gift cards, catering, classes, daily specials, and more. What can I say? There are those places that are worth the effort. As a lifelong person with a disability, I long ago realized the world would never be perfectly accessible. It's never going to happen. I'll continue to work toward a more accessible world, though I'll also honor that there are those places where I feel welcome anyway. I feel welcome at Goose the Market, though I can't quite get the full experience. The service is exceptional, the products quite awesome, the environment warm and friendly, and there's simply no doubt it's one of Indy's treasures. So yeah, five stars. With a disclaimer that those with mobility impairments may need to plan ahead or have a companion along. Who wants to be my companion?

What a fun spot for a sandwich or cheese or sundry items!…read more It is on the corner of two busy streets but does have two spots in front for parking. You can also park in the gravel lot across the road. It was raining pretty heavily so we got wet but wasn't a far dash. The counter is like any deli with the items displayed in the cold case. You can browse the various freezers or shelves for items like picked veggies, canned fish or spreads. It was fun to see that you could buy everything needed for a picnic or impromptu lunch! We got sandwiches to go as well as locally baked cookies. I tried the recommendation for a vegetarian sandwich. It was nice and crusty and had some good flavor. I might create my own next time, but theirs was good and had lots of flavor! My friend was new to Indianapolis and really liked the options. She said she would be back and so will we. They also do tasting events and other things so we might check out one of their offerings. A fun local spot!

I checked in…read morewith the young woman tending the register and she gave me the lay of the land as well as a souvenir tasting fork of my choice. There were a few designs to choose from: a lobster, an oyster, and a fish, from what I can recall. She also introduced me to our gracious host for the evening, Nolan, who was running the show. Nolan is a big ball of energy and a joy to be around. He set the vibes to light, fun and whimsical and I really appreciated that. Everyone moved around the room freely, visiting all of the tasting stations that were set up with whimsical, hand-drawn decorations on the paper tablecloths (much like that seen on the Pinterest commercial). There were 6 different ones, all with multiple options at each station. I tried sardines, razor clams, pickled ramps, an entire array of Fishwife tinned items, mustards, seafood dip that is made in-house, oysters, the list goes on. They also introduced me to an Indiana-based soda company call Bollygood, with Indian-inspired flavors. I love, love, love the Lime Basil Cumin flavor. I wasn't too sure about that combo, but it was delicious and super-refreshing. It smelled like a taco...but didn't taste like one! The Lemon Mango Turmeric was really good too. I also enjoyed the demonstrations lead by Chef Amber. She also has a light that was a pleasure to witness. I could just tell that she really loves what she does. While she does not work there, she still gets to come back for the fun stuff (her words). She has been a huge influence on the whole tinned fish movement at the smokehouse and develops recipes and curates these events alongside Nolan and the team. I loved both recipes that were shared with us and her enthusiasm to show us how we can elevate the tinned fish beyond the can. We mingled. We made friends. I spent a pretty penny on several of the delicious items that I was introduced to. I look forward to attending more events here in the future.

Here are my takeaways: Tour: Once we got our health and safety standards attire, we made our way through the warehouse tour. So interesting to see each step of the process. Affordable way to spend a Saturday morning and you can try some cool charcuterie meats like a fancy person. Shop/Product Reviews: As mentioned before, the retail shop is packed with products. Plenty of items to make a gorgeous charcuterie board and tasting plates. I did try a sample of the gin and juice salami, which I did not like. I found 4 great items that I will probably purchase again in the future: Big Red Salami made with Wagyu, Soprosseta, Tulip Tree Trillium Cheese and the amazing confection...Miso Bacon Caramel Bar. That and the Soprosseta stole my heart. Go there, try samples, buy what makes you smile, and live each day to the fullest!

Since I've lived here, we've…read moreseen the move from Market Square to Conseco/Bankers Life.. the transition from the Hoosier Dome to Lucas Oil, Mass Ave from a run-down street with public housing to one of the best streets in Indy (still with public housing) and the reinvention of the specialty grocery stores. About 15 years ago when Food Network introduced us to Ina Garten, Giada De Laurentiis, Paula Deen and Rachel Ray, my little TiVo recorded hours and hours of food being prepared, most of it purchased at specialty stores. I can't tell you how many times I heard "just run down to your specialty grocery and pick up.." - and we had nothing like this. Was Meijer, Marsh or Wal-Mart considered a specialty grocery store, and why didn't they carry anything they were talking about on TV? Finally, our world-class city starting to get with the program. More and more people cared about where the food they were consuming came from, demanding more and more local ingredients and some of these "specialty" items. Some really smart people decided they would be the ones to begin this transformation, and we started seeing specialty stores popping up. Kind of. Let's face it.. Goose The Market was really the pioneer here, but this is a review about R2GO and not Goose, so let's just fast forward about 6 years to mid-December, 2014. Because I really think "bodega" sounds a heck of a lot cooler than "specialty grocery store" and I did see spanish-type items on the shelves, I'm going to refer to R2GO as a cute little bodega. Opening just before Christmas, the shelves have a heavy influence on local. The fridge and freezers are stocked with freshly prepared entrees and sides that you can whip up in a breeze. I saw a great selection of refrigerated and frozen soups, including chicken stock that were prepared in house as well as a limited selection of fresh produce. I'm hoping once we hit summer the produce expands. Fresh breads lined the wall next to the seating area where people can grab a sandwich from the counter and have a quick bite. The meat counter offers more specialty items than you can find at your big chain grocery store, and sandwiches are made to order. I'm so happy to have this within walking distance to me. As the temperatures get warmer, I'm hopeful tables and chairs pop up on the patio where I can grab a bite to eat while watching the day go by. Welcome to the neighbor, R2GO!
