I originally gave Carmax a one-star review. Because my GMC Sierra developed major engine problems after having truck for 67 days and driven about 2100 miles. I was extremely frustrated. The warranty company fixed the lifters, but denied part of the repair. I want to give Carmax credit. They stepped up and agreed to fix my truck when warranty company wouldn't. I still wish I hadn't experienced such major issues so soon after buying vehicle, but I also believe it's important to recognize when a company does the right thing. Thank you CARMAX!! read more

Came here Nov 2024 Super friendly staff, was greeted accordingly. I previously had been in search for a new car for a long time now and we wanted to check out CarMax. Alexis was super kind and friendly she made the experience super good. It's not like a traditionally dealership where's they try to upscale and suprise you with additional markups. The car you see there is the car that the price is going for. Unfortunately I don't think you can haggle the price lower, that's what they list their car for. Inside is clean and smells good as well. You can schedule an appointment via online and also schedule test drives or even do paper work prior to coming to get your vehicle and such. After a few hours decided to pick the car that was the most affordable and most reasonable and good condition. Ended up walking a way with a gently used, new to me Tesla Model 3. Could not be any happier with the smooth process and friendly staff. Highly recommend. read more

Appointment was for 12pm but had to wait until 12:45 before I was finally talking to a salesman and information was being taken for the test drive. The test drive itself was great. They give you the keys here and let you go out on your own without the salesman present in the car which is nice. The Kia Telluride (2025) I test drove had a few cosmetic flaws that I was told could be taken care of. The prices are fair and the no hassle or haggle takes a lot of pressure out for both the buyer and seller although it favors the seller. Overall the dealer here has a wide selection of cars and if they don't have it they can ship it to this location (for a fee). I would definitely come back if I found the right car and the price is right. read more

I have bought over 12 cars probably more from different locations. I changed the South Sacramento location because Roseville location had me waiting four hours for me to sign for a new car after I did most of my paperwork online. But south Sacramento. Carmax is probably the worst that I've dealt with. I don't know if it's management or ownership what has changed but they're going downhill fast. You can't get a hold of anybody in service. When you text your sales guy, he doesn't respond and when he does respond, he says he's going to update me the same day he never does. I have purchased 2 cars previously with Carmax and had such great experiences, i tecommended to everyone. that is, until this last week when I was messed with. several people I know in the Elk Grove area (2 previous employees in the last 2 years) have shared with me that Carmax changed their corporate business model, that focuses many dealer operations from a now corporate office. i was messed around with for 4 days previous to my visit to sign papers. bottom line, i walked out after being told originally by corporate sales that everything was all ready and I would be there for just about 10 minutes. I drove to the so sacramento location (3 hours) because they messed up the car being transferred to a location closer to my home. when I arrived for my appt, everything was fine until they disvovered I didn't have a piece of information that was necessary, and wasn't told I needed. I was ther 2 1/2 hours. I felt really sorry for my sales guy, and his manager, whose hands were apparently tied. meanwhile, to drive off with the car yesterday, I was told I had to insure it, which I did. so today I got to xcl that insurance with my carrie for the car I was to buy , and reinstate my old car, which I drove home, all told, this experience cost me well over 10 hours ... with nothing to show for it. and the frustration over dealing with four corporate sales people (800 line) as well as the locals who were at the mercy of corporate was needless. i would recommend not dealing with corporate if possible and going to the dealer direct, knowing of course that they have no authority but but will do their best to help you and not loose the sale because of their corporate ineptness. read more

This was my first time buying a car from Carmaxx despite reading the bad reviews , I went in anyway. In hopes of finding my new car . I did most of the process online through the app and came in once the car was shipped . I had the best customer service and Christina (sales rep) took care of us , she was excellent . I was able to test drive and make sure this car was the right fit we love our 2022 Nissan Rogue . Helped on finding a car that was within our budget, down payment and everything else was a breeze I will definitely be coming back and getting our second vehicle . I purchased a 2016 Honda Pilot about a year ago and paid extra for the warranty. Within 6 months, the AC went out. Diagnostics showed the compressor needed replacement (~$1,500). When I checked my warranty, I learned it should have been covered. However, I was later told the freon had been overfilled, causing more damage--and the repair cost jumped to ~$3,000. To make matters worse, the warranty company denied my claim. I never had the freon refilled, so this issue clearly existed before I bought the vehicle. For the amount of money I put down, I could have bought from a private seller and likely had fewer problems. I've purchased many vehicles from CarMax in the past, and while issues came up, the warranty always covered them. Not this time. Very disappointed. read more

Oh wow. Had an appointment at 3:00 pm Thursday. Arrived early and waited 45 minutes and still the vehicle was never shown nor any dales rep talk to us. The thing is plenty of car max people were standing around and having conversations that appeared to be funny because of the way they carried on. Another thing quite a few people were also waiting for service. When we arrived a woman was quite upset she had been waiting and nobody helped her and then left after scolding the guy at the check in counter for taking too long for her appointment. I do see many cars but no enthusiasm to sell them. I was with my friend and after this i would not recommend this place. We were given an excuse about its busy on the weekend but this was Thursday. While looking for a great deal on a certified pre-owned BMW 840i Gran Coupe, I decided that I should start the process of selling my current vehicle (2016 Lexus GS 200T). Based on my previous experience with selling a vehicle to the local CarMax, I figured that I would do the same this time around. Also, the local CarMax had a BMW 840i Gran Coupe in inventory, so I figured that I would test drive the car to see if it was actually what I wanted. Without an appointment, my son and I showed up to receive an appraisal on my Lexus and test drive the BMW. Upon arrival, we were greeted by an employee at the main desk who inquired about our visit and put us on a waiting list. While waiting to be called, my son and I explored the plethora of vehicles (including the 840i). Roughly 30 minutes later, my name was being called on a loudspeaker. Once inside, we were greeted by an employee named Daniel who would assist with initiating the appraisal process and the test drive of the 840i. Daniel asked questions regarding the vehicle's condition (very good condition) and I advised him that the vehicle did have a few modifications (lowered suspension, chrome delete, carbon fiber steering wheel). Simultaneously, he obtained the keys to the 840i so that we could test drive it while my car was being appraised. Here is where things got a little weird. Before handing the keys over to the 840i (FYI CarMax allows you to test drive the car by yourself, which I absolutely love for many reasons), he told me that the 840i was a very nice car and that I needed to make sure that my test drive did not exceed 15 minutes. Let me preface this by saying that I'm not a sensitive person (no offense to my sensitive brothers and sisters); however, his tone sounded very condescending. Almost as if I was a child that did not have any responsibilities, not an almost 40 year old, married father who is gainfully employed (I say that with a humble tone). After the "lecture", I took the keys and my son and I proceeded with the test drive. Thankfully, traffic was scarce, so I was able to put the car on the freeway, open it up a bit, and park it into my garage...it was significantly longer and wider than my current car, so I figured that I should see if it could fit into my garage. My son and I were super pleased with the car and I was sold that it would be the next car for me. Returning to the dealership, Daniel handed me the $15,500 (pretty low in comparison to the Kelly Blue Book value) appraisal offer good for 7 days (the car was appraised by James M.). Although, I liked the 840i that we test drove, I was not fond of the above market asking price that the vehicle was listed at (CarMax has a no-haggle rule). I was highly disappointed by the customer service that we received at this CarMax. Maybe comparison truly is the thief of joy, because I vividly remember how friendly the employees were when I sold my vehicle at this CarMax in 2018. Also, I learned that CarMax does not always offer the highest amount. I ended up submitting an appraisal inquiry via CarGurus and receiving over $2k more for my Lexus (please reference my review for Niello BMW). Joe was the manger. Not only did James provided and promised what was gonna happen. Which he delivered. However Joe took it up a notch and provided me a replacement of two components that he noticed that was wearing unevenly. I call that customer satisfaction. I bought a barely used 2021 Honda Civic back in July 2025, I loved it. Fast forward to now, I get my services done at Honda Dealership and they told me that my car had previously been in an accident. I was NOT told that when I bought this car. It's actually fucking insane to hide something like that from a customer. It was a "minor" accident where the previous owner probably ran into a curb or hit another car on the front driver side. My frontstruts and suspensions are beyond cooked in terms of fixing it. Don't trust jackshit these guys tell you, get all the information you can because I wish I could've. And their financing options are shit, just get it refinanced with your credit union yall. read more

We bought our second car in.... you guessed it..... 2020! Right in the thick of the pandemic. My wife' former PT Cruiser had finally reached it's last leg and she needed a little around-town commuter. What I liked about CarMax from the start is that the app made it super convenient before we ever set foot in the office. I was able to look up car body design, 360 surround images, spec sheet, accident reports, ..... basically any detail on the vehicle besides actually test driving it! My wife was almost immediately drawn to the cute little lime green Chevy Spark. This specific make/model is all electric. It's not the newest EV on the market, but perfect for her 7 minute commute from home to work. Everything from the purchasing process, test driving, ZERO hassles, and basically in and out just over an hour..... I'd say it was the best car buying experience we have both had thus far. Bought a 2014 Mercedes C250 from CarMax Sacramento South and it's been a nightmare. The car had problems from day one, and paperwork proves they knew on 7/30 and 8/6, but managers Joe Weiss and David Njuguna falsely claimed they only found out on 8/19. It's now been 6+ weeks out of service, while I've paid nearly $1,300 in payments and insurance for a car I couldn't drive. Instead of fixing it under the 90-day warranty, staff like Andre tried to push me into paying more for a replacement. The only positive has been Colette in Service, who stayed calm and did everything she could to make things right despite my frustration. She is the only reason the store even gets 2 stars. I'm just giving a review based off of my purchase experience and my return experience. It took me an hour to pick the vehicle I wanted, and under 30 minutes to sign and be out the door with my new vehicle. This is what I'm giving high Review for. Carmax is a no haggle dealership. The downfall to my experience, as I am 16 points away from an 800 credit score, but they gave me a 19% APR rate. Even though they say I can have three days to get it refinanced, for the life of me, I couldn't imagine any institution wanting to take over a loan at a 19% APR rate. Luckily, Carmax offers a 10 day return no questions asked of course, within limits. You cannot return the car with over 1500 miles on it. So, I took the car. I drove it to the bay took care of the business I needed to get done, didn't fall in love with a vehicle, so I returned it within five days. I ended up getting similar vehicle, at another dealership with a 5.8% APR rate. I found similar vehicle @ lower monthly payment, and that super low APR rate, 20k lower miles the day before I returned this vehicle to Carmax. This is where Carmax, score is very high with me, they did not haggle me. When I returned the vehicle, they did not try to sell me another vehicle, they did not hit me with 20 questions. They just had me sign my name refunded me my down payment, and told me to return if I wanted to see another car. The return was 27 minutes, under 30 minutes to return the car. I don't understand how they came up with that high APR rate here, even the guy who sold me the car didn't understand it either. I was here late in the evening to buy this vehicle, probably after other financial institutions are closed. So this was their in-house financer offering me this 19% APR. Remember, this is With a credit score 784... puzzling. Service it great APR offered was terrible. Recommend come with your own financing already done. read more

Transferred in a vehicle. can only speak with someone in another state, not a local sales person or manager. Transferred in a car. They would not check if it smelled like smoke prior to shipping it. Waited 8 days for it to arrive and be made ready, but then they canceled my hold on the car. They also dropped their offer on my trade-in by $600. When I finally got to speak with a manager, he said he would put it back on hold for that day, but even with an appointment, I could expect a long wait because it was a weekend. After that call, I called Elk Grove Hyundai and asked if they had a certified pre-owned Sonata hybrid. They didn't, but instead offered a new one almost the same price, and a below market interest rate that made the new car payments lower than I would have been paying for the used car. read more

CarMax is a a waste of time. My recent experience with them affirmed my assessment that the company does not know what it is doing. We received a quote from CarMax to sell them the car. The offer was reasonable so we called and talked to them about the offer. We explained to them that the car was a leased vehicle from KIA. We told them we had a previous experience with them where they required us to pay off the lease and take possession to the car before they would take the car. WE WERE TOLD THAT NOW THAT WAS NO LONGER NECESSARY AND THEY WOULD TRANSFER THE CAR IN THE PROCESS. We weren't comfortable with this explanation and decided to return the car to KIA. But when went to the dealer for our new lease, we talked to the sales manager. The sales manager confirmed to us that CarMax could and would take under lease and transfer the ownership. So we returned home and talked to CarMax about the offer and that the vehicle was a lease with KIA. Again CarFax confirmed that we could sell the vehicle to them with the lease. We made an appointment with CarMax to sell the car. We arrive at CarFax and they tell us they will not accept the vehicle without having the ownership transferred to us and having the DMV title in possession. Obviously CarMax has either no consistent policy about purchase of vehicles with leases, poor trained personnel or deceptive business practuces. read more

If I could give them no stars I would! Long story short, they ghosted me for over a week after I had paid for a car to be transferred. I had to keep contacting them and finally they told me they couldn't get a part to repair the damaged car door. Now, I know this didn't happen in transit. Why did the original store even have it up and passing their inspection? Makes me wonder about these so called inspections. Anyway, they offered to give me back my transfer fee as their customer service was poor, when I asked if I would be receiving a discount so that I could repair the door they would only give $250 which doesn't even cover the part that needs to be replaced. They offered to give me another transfer up to $200 free but why would I do that when they couldn't even get the first one correct. Needless to say this is still ongoing as I still do not have my money back. They told me in 7-10 days I'd have my money back. Well now they are saying 7-10 business days. Doesn't surprise me. Called prior to arriving..(my idea)... Son got an appointment for 1 pm.. Our goal was to take advantage (of the appraisals)... Since we have an extra car (no longer needed).. decided to see how their appraisals came in... Weird incident... We parked in the designated appraisal section, (all slots almost full)... As we were getting out of the vehicle, a car passed by and said they were looking for a car to buy like ours ..... interesting??? Or ??... Told him the price, and he didn't say much.. We checked in, staff was plenty, and professional. Took us to his desk, input the vehicle info, and was instructed to sit in the appraisal waiting area.. Nice they have a tv showing you your name and where they are in the process.. Downside-no freebies of water or snacks (maybe I'm spoiled at my Lexus dealer in Reno-sodas, water and latte's, even donuts)... Time goes went by fast, and we were presented with our offer -good for 7 days! Nice to have a baseline and if we decide after selling ourself, we will return.. If you are going to sell your vehicle to Carmax, sell within the 7 days of the quote. We waited another 2 weeks for various reasons, only put another 100 miles on the car and surprise! quote went down $400 from the original. Sales rep or manager- not sure which- gave a bullshit story about market fluctuation - and that he really could not explain why. I can explain why. It was because they knew I came back to the sell the car so they didn't have to honor the original quote. They shaved off just enough to put more in their pockets but not enough to piss me off enough to go home without finishing the transaction. They offered more than the car dealership trade in value but if you want the price they gave you on your first quote, sell it to them within the 7 day guarantee quote window or you will not get that price. I was scammed but it was too much of a hassle to turn back. If this is what they consider good business practice I would not buy from them and I sure as hell won't sell to them again. On the bright side, the young man who handled my paperwork, Austin, was extremely nice and helpful. He was the only good thing to say about the experience. read more

This review is more to warn you as a customer to make sure you protect the sales price in case you decide to leave and come back at a later date due to waiting for a car to be checked in, smogged, and be ready to sell for you. Saturday my wife and I came to check out a jeep Cherokee that we reserved for an appointment which ended up not working out for our needs as a family. We were helped by sales rep Paul who was great through this entire situation and makes sense why he's in the presidents club because he was great and nothing that we went through was his fault. We ended up going back out to grab stock #'s for two Jeep wrangler's that we found better fitting for our family so we came back and that is where Paul informed us the first stock # was reserved to be transferred out but the other one was showing N/A but no reason. He checked on the reason and turned out it hadn't been checked in and still needed to be smogged. I asked the price and he searched and told us $36,998 which was compatible to the first Jeep that wasn't available. I told him great nothing crazy on price and asked to get a print out so I can get a insurance quote to be better prepared when we returned to test drive the Jeep. We couldn't test drive it then due to it not being sellable because it wasn't smogged and processed yet. Come Monday Paul was great with communicating that he requested the smog and would keep me updated in which he did. Come today (Tuesday) November 30th 202, I'm informed by Paul the Jeep is ready so we set an appointment for 4:30 to come test drive it. Everything checked out and we returned back to Paul's desk and ran my application for financing and out comes the issue. The car was now priced at $42,998 which is $6k more then what we were told on Saturday 3 days prior and my payment was $800 at 6%. Now let me back up that I was planning on selling my 2020 Ford Explorer with about 11k miles and payments are $700 at 0% interest. Financially it makes no sense I would come back today and buy a car for walking out price of $48k and a $800/monthly payment at 6% for 72 months. Side not I would have rolled over $1k in negative equity but even $47k with $4,500 in taxes doesn't make sense at all. Point of this review is I was told I should have taken a picture of the price that Paul saw on the computer because the buyers at this location said there was no history for that price so they wouldn't do anything. I knew I wouldn't get $6k taken off and it was my sales rep's word against the buyer department but this is not good business and unfortunate it even happened. We were ready to purchase this wrangler but this whole ordeal made us walk out and not happy of course. As expected, we won't be doing business with Car Max but want to make it clear Paul was great and Matt the manager was ok as well. Reminder to take pictures of all pricing you see so you have proof. Since I didn't take a picture of the price on the computer, I wasn't honored the price I was told. Wow. Buying the car, not a problem. Having to take it back the week after to have it serviced? If I could only give zero or negative stars. Shop doesn't open until 730. Dropped the car off and filled out an overnight envelope Monday morning probably at 0710 and left for work. Realized a work badge was left in the car so needed to drive out there to get it. Called them at 4pm to let them know I was coming for the woman who answered to tell me rudely she had no idea who I was. I explained the car was dropped off for an 0800 appointment and something had been left behind we needed. Got there at 430pm to find out they didn't get the key out of the overnight box that morning, they were short staffed, and would make it a priority for Tuesday. My guess? They checked the overnight drop box to get the key when I called. On Tuesday I got a phone call telling me what was wrong with the car and that with the problem, the car shouldn't be driven in the rain, they ordered the part and it should be there Thursday. So CarMax sold me a car my hat wasn't safe for driving in the rain? Great. Today, I got a call it was ready, so back to CarMax to pick it up. Unfortunately, after diving the car for a half hour, it continues to make the same "popping" sound with left and right turns. Called the service department again, heard the same woman's voice, told her the car was still having issues. I took a beat and said, forget it, I'll take the car to Roseville. She legitimately sounded relieved. Called the Roseville service location and explained the situation. The person I spoke with at Roseville made it sound like I wasn't the first one to have a similar service issue with south sac and they made me an appointment for 3 weeks from today. They asked if the car was still drivable, something South Sac never asked. I absolutely hate that I gave the South Sac location my business and so much of my time. read more

We waited 1 hour before someone even went to look at the car. I will never do any service with CarMax again. My mother and I went into this dealership to get her 2015 Honda Pilot appraised. She purchased it here a few years back for $14k and had it taken care of meticulously. It was a quick appraisal and when it was returned we were told only $2,500 would be offered due to interior cosmetics and an "engine knocking sound". This sounded suspicious to us and we had it taken into another location to have a diagnosis run on the car. After a test drive and code review it was determined that there is nothing wrong with the engine and that the only noise from it is normal and expected for its age and mileage. This is predatory pricing practice. We could have accepted the offer, only for CarMax to turn around and resell the vehicle an a massive profit for them and a debilitating loss for my mother. She is an older woman and we are posting this review out of concern for any possible person who might be older, disadvantaged, etc. who would be in a position where they don't have any other options and this is what would be done to them.
