CarMax has an easy hassle free car buying experience. I had a wonderful sales lady her name was Keturah Bailey. She was extremely professional. I purchased one vehicle which was a Chevy Equinox and discovered it was too small for my family and I was able to exchange the vehicle. The second vehicle was a 2016 Kia Sorento. This vehicle was nice and roomy excellent vehicle for a family of 4. Two days after the purchase the check engine came on and I took it to autozone and two error codes appeared. The code was P0010 which was the intake camshaft position actuator. I called and spoke to several people in service only to be told they won't have any appointments until June and I should take it to a Kia dealership. Kia didn't have any appointments available until after the 30th of May. Carmax wasn't any help at all and I decided to return the vehicle. After the vehicle was returned now I was offered suggestions I wasn't before and they allegedly sent the vehicle out to be serviced the same day! Where was this customer service when I needed assistance?? Overall my car buying experience was not horrible, but I am on the fence about giving them another try. read more

I called 1st; then scheduled an appointment. I wanted to do a trade-in. I was crushed at how little they valued my vehicle after putting so much upfront cash into it, but that's a learner's lesson on me. The sales rep was courteous, attentive and very informative throughout the process. I used my 7 days, no questions asked return policy to give myself time to have my personal mechanic look over the vehicle. When he came back with concerns, I was able to share a PDF copy of his full diagnostic report with handwritten notes and after negotiating small stuff, brought the vehicle back for full review. They agreed with some stuff and noted their resistance to address others. What made my experience even more awesome is that before they returned my vehicle to me, they found something all of us missed and took it back to the manufacturer to have that corrected too! It was done on their tab not costing me one extra cent! Every item they addressed during the return for service (including those items they considered as not necessary to be addressed) were all covered with an extra 12 years, 12,000 miles warranty! I've purchased a few cars in my past and have had a few bad experiences. To say I had a bit of anxiety about yet another car purchase would be an understatement! I've actually been avoiding getting a new car for some months now BECAUSE of my anxiety. I found a car I was interested in on Carmaxs website and called the store to inquire about a transfer or how that would work. I actually talked with Sharman from the beginning of this process. She handled every step of my car buying processes with IMPECCABLE professionalism and she was so incredibly kind and patient with my children. She's awesome at her job. On February 10, 2018, I had my 2009 Hyundai Sante Fe Limited towed in to Carmax because I was interested in trading it in and purchasing a vehicle. My truck was towed there because it was stuck in 6-7inches of snow and it had not been started in 2 months. When my truck arrived Brad my salesman was outside with me, the tow truck driver stated he was unable to start it. Brad said they will see if they can use the box to jump it. After a couple of minutes I was informed by Brad that my vehicle was appraised at $1200. Needless to say I was stunned; how can a appraiser that didn't bother to drive my vehicle appraise it fairly?Additionally, my truck only has 88837 miles on it, no rust, dents, never been in any accidents; there's only a scratch in the back near the gas tank. I really feel taken advantage of by this appraisal because I'm a woman. My sister & a young lady from my church had intentions on going to Carmax, after me telling them my "lowball" appraisal they were shocked. read more

Just an update as I've had to use the CarMax warranty lately, and wanted to give a thumbs up to that service as well. The facility where I bought my car is really to far away from my home to be convenient to take the car in for service, so I went to the BMW dealer which was on the way to work. They quoted me approximately 8 billion dollars (well, not really, but that's what it felt like) to fix a cracked something-or-other and to repair a tire that had a nail in it. I was mortified and sad until the CarMax Warranty folks called me to say the dealer had put in a claim and they would cover it. I didn't even have to call them myself. That's pretty awesome. Went here looking for a used car. We ended up looking at several dealers, and CarMax had the best price and service. Brian helped us out. Having gone to a good 20 different dealers in a week or so, I have to say he was the friendliest and most knowledgable guy we dealt with. He brought a car in from another store and checked into all sorts of minor details to be sure the car was exactly what I needed. Sadly, it turned out that because I don't have the best credit, I ended up purchasing the car elsewhere -- Toyota offered me a 2.9% rate and CarMax just couldn't match it. But nevertheless, I would have purchased from Brian if not for the financing, which was entirely out of his control. I felt almost guilty buying from someone else. I gave my service 3 stars due to my salesperson & I also like my car. My salesperson was nice & even wiped down my car when whoever was supposed to detail my car did not do a good job. It looked like the detailer did not do anything to my car. I feel when a consumer buys a car it should be cleaned inside & out even though it is used. My daughter contacted CarMax is Oaklawn Illinois yesterday about getting financed for a car. Mahmoud Abbelnabi told her she was approved for the car and asked her to send all of her information to him due to Covid that everything was done over the phone and online. He then called back saying that there was a problem that my name cane up under her social and birthday which is totally ridiculous and crazy. He was so unprofessional and he could not explain anything to her . I called and talked with a manager and he explained to me what was going on... Today she is getting emails stating that the car is on the way she will be able to pick it up and now they are telling her that she needs a co signor... This place is so unorganized and he shouldn't be doing any business for the company and he tells her that she needs more money down for a 2012 Dodge Dart that has 57000 miles on the car. Don't do business with CarMax at all they suck and they are very unprofessional at this location. No one can get a straight answer from anyone at this location. I went here to get my car appraised. They were pretty quick. Of course, they tried to sell me a used car. They explained how they are different than other places because they have a no haggle price that is supposed to be a decent deal. They tried to sell me a used car with similar features to the new car I was looking to buy but their no haggle price was less than $1000 less than the price I got for the same new car except the used car had 12,000 miles on it. Their no haggle price is complete crap. I would never buy a used car from them. They also were so thorough on the appraisal of my car that they failed to count the doors on my car. They listed my 4 door chevy cavalier as a 2 door coupe. Needless to say, it was difficult to take their appraisal seriously. Stay Away!! read more

My experience here was fantastic. Sean helped me out over the course of 2 days. We spent the first day browsing at all the cars in my price range as well as test drove multiple cars. Not once did Sean have to use his phone to look up information or read off the flyers on the car to give me information. He knew fact about all the cars we looked at and was truly trying to get me the best car for my buck. He was even able to hold a car for me, on the second day we test drove that car he put to the side for me and then began with the entire paper process; which wasn't stressful at all. Purchased a car from CarMax and although my sales person was great, the business office has been less that cooperative. I live in Florida and bought the vehicle in Illinois and CarMax assured me they could send the paperwork to Florida for the registration. I called the Clay County Tax Collector in Florida to verify what they would need to register the car in Florida, conveyed that info to CarMax. Weeks go by, I do not have my registration. Clay County tells me they're waiting on the title and VIN verification from CarMax in IL - IL does not require VIN verification so all CarMax had to do was put something on their letterhead that they verified the VIN of the car they sold me. They refused. I bought the call in IL because they assured me they could take care of whatever paperwork needed to be filed with Florida, that turns out to not be the case, so they did not tell me the truth. read more

I live in Chicago and located a 2005 Ford Focus ZXW on the Carmax website and was very pleased with the entire purchasing experience. Our salesman's name was Bob Copp and I have nothing but great things to say about this man. For starters, he is stand-up gentleman who provided my wife and I with very pleasurable experience in buying our first car, which, as any first-time-buyer knows, can be a very intimidating experience. My wife and I first located the car online, but had to get out to the Oak Lawn, IL. location to see it. It was pretty far from us, so we had to have my Mother-in-Law get us there - a 30 mile inconvenience for us. We scheduled a test drive with Bob before doing so, but were running about 10 minutes late due to traffic. When we arrived, we were greeted by Bob, who then took us out to see the car. He marked the car as sold to save us the opportunity to purchase the car! Had the car been sold before we got there, it would have been a huge headache, but Bob took it upon himself to make sure it was reserved without suggestion. He also answered all of our questions and concerns with a genuine desire to do so and spoke very highly of Carmax. After purchasing the car, and getting about halfway home, the car started showing some signs of electrical problems. The following day, we called Carmax because the car is covered under warranty for up to a month. The call was painless and we scheduled an appointment to meet up with their Service Dept the following day at 9:30AM. We arrived an hour early, but were still greeted with accommodation by Cesar, who worked in the Service Dept, and given a nice temporary car while we waited for our car to be repaired. It was simply a problem with the battery which failed to show any problems during the initial testing phase. I DO NOT blame Carmax for this because the car didn't show any signs of a problem until driving it for about 30 minutes. Besides the Service Dept. found the problem right away, fixed it, and our car is running fantastically that very same day! The added assurance that they provide such great service right off the lot is priceless. Had we purchased this car from any other dealer, I doubt it would have gone this smoothly if at all. Cesar was also very friendly and polite, he did a great job to ensure that all of our concerns were addressed and taken care of. We also bought into the 6 year warranty upon purchase and couldn't be happier about what that warranty covers and with how straight forward it is. Had a bit of trouble with their financing due to my name change. Financing wanted proof of my name. My salesman Scottie was so helpful from beginning to end and I'm that never trusted fast talking salesman. He listened, he was patient with a very anxious client and most of all during the financing issue, he drove me home to get the needed documents for financing because I came there without a car. My documents were not at home so then we went to the courthouse to get a copy of the needed docs. All while my Carmax Salesman Scottie waited patiently in the car. I later drove my car home that day. If ever buying another car, I'm going back to Scott Scottie at Car Max. He was amazing! read more

I recently purchased a car from CarMax. I was very worried about being pressured to buy something I couldn't afford, or being charged lots of inane fees that had little/nothing to do with my car. I was pleasantly surprised to find none of those things here: in fact, quite the opposite was true. I was helped by both Bob and Slawek, and both were very relaxed when showing cars. I felt like I was just being shown a friend's car collection. Only once did Slawek talk numbers to me, and that was just to show me that I could actually afford a bigger car than I thought, which was exactly what I needed to know. I went in with a Compact Car mindset and came out with a Mid-sized Sedan for the same price. Inside, all the charges were explained to me in full. The only one that was bizarre was an ETR charge, which was a fee for Electronic Registration with the state of Illinois. It wasn't even a fee for Carmax! I drove off the lot with real plates, a real registration, and real peace of mind. I can't recommend it enough! read more

Decent. I had been used car shopping for two weeks and we ended up here after much pain and suffering at the hands of the strange breed that is used car salesman. The prices were decent, and while I'm sure I could have gotten my vehicle for maybe $500 less than what I paid had I spent hours haggling at another dealership, I honestly was so sick of the whole scene I was happy to walk away with that, you know, "Carmax peace of mind." I will admit that selling a car to someone like me at Carmax is like shooting fish in a barrel. That being said, the salesperson I saw here didn't really know much about the vehicles we looked at. There was a lot of general confusion regarding the features, where the spare tire was, and (!!) how to open the side doors without using the remote. Oh my! Because I'd done my research, this didn't matter so much, but it was pretty unimpressive considering how much people could potentially drop on a vehicle. Beyond that, everyone else here was very nice and professional -- they live up to their customer service standards for sure. I look forward to driving my Mom-Mobile for many years to come, and would recommend this if you have done your research and don't want to talk to jerks all day on a used car lot. read more

whats up with this location my god mistake after mistake i had a car put on hold okay it takes 11 days to come from hillside so already thats a problem here to find out it came without a title are you kidding me so how are we gonna fix this issue hmmmmm i have an idea how bout going to hillside and getting it a half hour away ummm that didnt happen mr terry tells me i might go get it tomorrow wait you might go get it??? so anyways the manager greg had informed me that i should deal with terry only well okay so i contact him no responce next day same thing later to find out he took a leave of absence and didnt have the courtesy to respond to me instead left me hanging so good job there a text takes 15 seconds so okay thanks alot so this story actually gets worse if thats possible so i go back there to talk to the manager greg to clear all this up and tell him okay im ready to buy this car now so he says okay lets see whats going on with this car so the car is gone i said what gone how i have it on hold it cant be gone and sure enough the hold was removed without notifying me after 3 days but i waited 11 for it so i couldnt understand that at all so yes greg found me another car all be it but its another ten day wait so my patience is running thin so to terry sami and mark you guys get a below average grade bad job fellas and mr sami get a personality you barely even speak ive seen you ten times you couldnt even acknowledge my presence once so your terrible shame on you so people go to a different location this one is lacking professionalism read more

I had taken it to 6 other dealers with only 1 other offering the same price as Carmax.. and even then it sounded as though it would be a hassle to get my check. BE WARE! RUN, DO NOT WALK, TO THE NEAREST EXIT! We traded a 2012 Toyota Venza in for two vehicles. A 2005 mustang, and a 2010 focus. They claim a 250 point inspection on all vehicles prior to sale. The SHOUT quality guarantee from the roof tops! Then they need to sell you the $1500.00 OR MORE warranty. And trust me. Your gonna need it. It is the ONLY quality to speak of from start to finish. We get the cars home, my mustang has a seat lever thats completely busted and didn't function what so ever, I notice the car has a large chip in the hood while still in the parking lot (we're told it was priced with that in mind), the vehicle had trouble STARTING when the salesman went to start it--he had to try twice (he tells us that's normal), the rear window defrosted literally FELL off the rear window and was no longer attached...so of course that doesn't work, and I notice when I get it home that the trans significantly hesitates to shift into reverse. Then I take the car to a PROFESSIONAL garage to have it inspected for any FURTHER problems. It comes back needing a ball joint assembly, a rear brake caliper that's seized--dragging on the rotar, and a bad trans solenoid. THAT'S JUST THE MUSTANG! The Ford Focus was making a thumping noise in the tires while taking the rest drive. We're told by the salesman that this is normal when the tires haven't been rotated in a while--no big deal. We take the red flag over to our trusted garage again and find out it has cupping in both rear tires, and of course needs new shocks and struts, which caused the cupping to begin with. We report all these issues to carmax, and submit the inspection forms from the other garage confirming the issues with the vehicles within their 30 day free warranty period wherein everything is covered, no questions asked. We're told that CarMax's mechanics have to AGREE that these issues are present after their own inspection in order to make those repairs for us. Well of course, the most expensive issues were the ones that CarMax's mechanics couldn't FIND...go figure... So according to carmax...my mustang has no issue in the front end, no problem with the trans, and my wife's has no issue with any of the shocks or struts.So they come back telling us they'll fix the seat lever, rear defroster, and rear brake on the mustang. They will fix NOTHING on my wife's Focus. They repair said issues with my mustang and when I get the car back...the seat lever now functions, but it is HANGING off the seat instead of being directly attached like it should be. So the car goes right back into the service dept for THE SAME repair, which wasn't done right the first time. My car continues to hesitate in reverse...the front end still makes noise, and my wife's car is still in the exact CRAP condition they sold it to us in. We decide were going to hire legal counsel to go further, as the issues with our vehicles have already been confirmed with another shop, our vehicles are still under a free 30 day warranty, and CarMax is choosing to overlook them. We write a detailed letter to "whom it may concern" at carmax, notifying them of our intentions to pursue this issue further legally...and what do you know--WE GET IMMEDIATE RESPONSE!! The GM of the branch wants to have our cars inspected again, "just in case they accidentally missed something". This time the same mechanics and same shop who said my car was fine...come back saying my car needs an alignment, a ball joint assembly, and a new transmission solenoid assembly. WHAT DO YOU KNOW!? It was there all along! As for my wife's car...they offered new tires and rotation at cost. Just putting new tires on took them three days, counting the day we dropped it off. I can do the exact same job in an hour or less. WARNING!!! This process was very grueling, and lasted for a month! They even came back to us when we brought my wife's car in for the tires they promised at cost, and tried to say the price of the job was going to increase from what they initially told us. I had recorded the shop manager quoting the job at cost, and kindly provided them with the recording. Suddenly...the price of the job didn't need to increase anymore. They're con artists in my opinion. They know the average car on their lot doesn't meet the quality level they lie about on their commercials...so they sell you a $1500(+) warranty, making MORE off you, and thereby covering their rear-ends cause they know the vehicles they generally sell are probable to fail. read more

This is one of the worst service department I have ever visited. They don't fix or check what they tell you they are going to check. I bought a vehicle from carmax in March 2013 and thought it was a fair deal. After driving it in the rain I found out they had shined the tires and when the shine washed off the tires were all dry rotted. I had to buy a new set of tires. Then the alignment was off and they told me it was the wind pulling the vehicle. I had it checked at another shop and they gave me a computer printout that showed the alignment was way off on front and back. I took it back to Carmax and they told me they would have it aligned. They called and told me it would cost me $157 for the alignment. I told them the alignment was supposed to be covered b/c they said the problem was fixed. Drove the car and noticed that it was still pulling to the right. Scheduled another appt and supposedly it was fixed. Picked it up and still not fixed. Took it back again and found out it was never aligned the first visit. They kept my vehicle all day and called and told me the staff was busy prepping the new car sales and didn't get a chance to take my car for repair. I spoke with the manager in the service dept and he is one of the problems. He told me that I could take my car to the shop that they get to work on hi end cars. Now, I'm doing their job. Why would I want to take my car back to any of them. I don't trust their work or service dept. they lied about the service they performed on my vehicle. No more purchases from carmax read more

I went to CarMax today and test dove a car I liked. After driving the car, the sales associate took the car to park it in the lot. It was taking him quite a while to come back in the office and after a while he finally showed up full of questions about where the other key of the car was. He asked me 4 times if accidentally placed the keys in my purse and before our meeting was over, he didn't fail to ask me one last time to check my purse to be sure. I took half of the items out of my purse, placed them on the desk, and picked up my purse and out of frustration basically shoved it in his face for him to look for himself. He denied my offer to look for himself. I was extremely offended by his accusations and insulted that he was more focused on questioning me about if I accidentally took the keys than doing business and the concerns I had about the car I test drove (which he failed to answer by the way). Even if I wanted to purchase that car, I would no do business with someone who can't do their job correctly and accuse the customer of "taking the keys on accident" when he was not even sure if there were 2 keys or 1. read more
