I was never a fan of the car selling/buying process but Carmax changed that. We were offered a very fair amount for our car and the process was quick and easy. I think the young woman helping us was Alia. I hope I got her name right. At any rate, she was very friendly and kind and patient and worked quickly to get us in and out of there. I would highly recommend the Oak lawn Carmax and would not hesitate to use them again in the future. read more

I came in ready to purchase a car I had seen online, but immediately felt uncomfortable because the male salesperson at the front desk was staring me up and down. I politely asked if I could work with a female salesperson instead. A man I believe was a manager, possibly Dave, then told me, "Here at CarMax, customers cannot pick their salesperson just like we cannot pick our customers." That response was completely inappropriate. I did not feel comfortable test-driving with someone who had already made me feel sexualized and uncomfortable. I left and purchased my vehicle elsewhere. Customers should be made to feel safe and respected, not embarrassed for asking to work with someone they feel comfortable with. read more

Selling a car can be a stressful experience, and the CarMax process is probably as good as it's going to be. I parked my old reliable on their lot, went inside, and was greeted and directed to the business office. Rosa asked for a few bits of information (I had already submitted what they needed online) and documents. A tech, Ellwyn, went to check my vehicle to see if the price estimate I received was correct. It was. I was told that the offer was good for seven days, but I came prepared to let my Toya (yes, I name my cars) go to a new owner. CarMax either sells the car themselves or sends them to auction. At any rate, I think the offer was fair, and Bob handed me a bank draft for the agreed amount. read more

To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with the experience my daughter and I have had with CarMax. This letter is particularly troubling to write because CarMax publicly states that its mission is "to drive integrity by being honest and transparent in every interaction," supported by core values including Do the Right Thing, Put People First, Win Together, and Go for Greatness. Unfortunately, our experience reflects the opposite. Failure to "Do the Right Thing" CarMax's value of doing the right thing implies ethical decision making and accountability. In our situation, we encountered actions and decisions that lacked accountability and failed to correct clear issues once they were identified. Rather than resolving the problem fairly, responsibility was deflected, leaving us to bear the consequences. Failure to "Put People First" At no point did we feel that my daughter -- a young consumer navigating a major financial decision -- or our family was treated as a priority. Communication was dismissive, concerns were minimized, and the emotional and financial stress this caused was disregarded. This does not align with a people first philosophy. Failure of Honesty and Transparency CarMax's mission centers on honesty and transparency, yet key information was unclear, incomplete, or only disclosed after the fact. This directly undermines consumer trust and contradicts the very foundation of CarMax's brand promise. Failure to "Win Together" Rather than working collaboratively to resolve the issue, the process felt adversarial. We were left to repeatedly follow up, explain, and advocate for ourselves, instead of being supported toward a fair resolution. Failure to "Go for Greatness" Excellence requires ownership, empathy, and proactive problem solving. The handling of our experience demonstrated none of these. What should have been a straightforward, trustworthy transaction became stressful, time consuming, and disappointing. Impact on the Consumer CarMax's mission and values suggest a consumer centric experience built on trust. In reality, our experience weakened our confidence not only in CarMax's processes, but in its commitment to the principles it promotes. The gap between stated values and actual behavior is significant and concerning. Request for Resolution I respectfully request a thorough review of this matter and a response that reflects CarMax's stated mission and values -- not only in principle, but in action. We are seeking a resolution that is fair, transparent, and accountable. Specifically, we are requesting that the vehicle be taken back and that the remaining loan balance be satisfied, as the vehicle is no longer operable and cannot be used as intended. We are not seeking compensation or additional damages -- only a reasonable and fair resolution to a situation that has caused significant hardship. I look forward to your prompt response. Sincerely, Eric W. Stiles read more

CarMax - THIS CAR DOES NOT WORK AND IS IN THE GARAGE - Used Car Dealers Near Me - Oak Lawn, Illinois

The lack of integrity at this location is staggering. They essentially tried a 'bait-and-switch' on our financing. After receiving a 5.74% rate online, the local team (led by Sean Markham) spent hours trying to force a 12% rate, even with a massive $10,000 down payment.   They withheld information about the 'FedEx Option' for remote signing, claiming it didn't exist until they were shown the CarMax website as proof. Even after the mistake was caught, they were unprofessional and made my grandchild wait an extra 90 minutes as retaliation. If you value transparency and honest business practices, stay away from this store. read more

I ended up returning the first car purchased there bc I went to another car lot to purchase a Chevy Equinox. While there walking around, I fell in love with a red Mazda CX too. So I purchased them both at the other lot As an end result, I walked away returning the original vehicle from Carmax. However, my experience there & with my salesman Travis who's now a new friend to my spirit is one I'm pleased with. The manager & rest of staff involved were also kind & warm, even at the end of my refund process. I walked away with respect in knowledge of their ethical & integral treatment of their staff, (especially in regards to their salesmen. So it's easy to know why the energy of the large open office space is light & clean. As such, that same energy was transferred to me as well. I'm grateful to have met Travis & definitely recommend this location! This should've been written much sooner!! lol Please go get some of your new pretty "babies" from this place of many options from multiple sister locations. BEWARE of this CARMAX!!!! My daughter was buying her first car. We live in CT and she lives in Chicago. Her experience should have been positive, as my family have bought multiple cars from CARMAX. She was preapproved with CarMax financing, with me as a so-signer. She test drove the car, told them about her financing and made a plan to return to purchase the car. She went on Saturday evening. She told them she had been preapproved for financing and had her $!0,000 down payment. Sales Manager Sean Markham then became involved and spent the next couple hours telling my daughter that she could not finance the car with me as a co-signer because I wasn't physically there. 2 hours. She continued to question why would they waste her time if the answer was no. Sean Markham's response was " well, we need to to better and this can be used as a learning experience." Sorry Sean, it is possible because once I got on the phone and told you the CARMAX has a policy called FEDEX Option. It is on their website. It is a CARMAX policy that if a co-signer is far away, they will fedex the forms to a local CARMAX for me to sign. Once I explained to Sean Markham that I know their policy he quickly made excuses and immediately went and called his manager for approval...just a minute before and for 2 hours, even with my daughter expressly asking for this, there was NO possible way to make this work. Amazingly, once the dad spoke up he changed his time. SEAN MARKHAM is a worthless piece of garbage who tried to take advantage of my daughter because he thought he could pad his bonus by making her pay 12% instead of 5%. DO NOT SHOP as this CARMAX until they address this bait and switch tactic. Late Saturday night, 3 male salesmen intimidating a young person to increase their money. ABSOLUTELY NOT OK! BIG TOUGH GUY Sean Markham changed his tune pretty quickly once he was caught being unethical!!! We have emailed CARMAX corporate and the local managers. We are also contacting the Illinois Attorney General for consumer protection and the Better Business Bureau. CARMAX management, I need to know what you will be doing to mitigate this situation and convince me, my family and friends to use CARMAX in the future? read more

PREDATORY BULYING AND BAD FAITH FINANCING! I am writing this to warn consumers about the predatory sales tactics and intimidation used at the CarMax location in OAK LAWN IL, specifically involving Sales Manager Sean Markham and staff members Brian, Ben, and Amad. My daughter arrived with a $10,000 down payment and a pre-approved rate of 5.74%. Despite this, she was surrounded by three men who spent over three hours bullying and pressuring her to accept a 12% interest rate. They claimed that because her co-signers were not physically present to scan IDs, the lower rate was "impossible"--an outright lie intended to force a young buyer into a predatory loan. When she logically asked why they had allowed the process to get this far if physical presence was required, they dismissively called it a "training moment for us," while simultaneously pressuring her to either take the 12% rate or increase her already substantial down payment. The Turning Point: We explicitly asked for remote alternatives, which were denied until we confronted Sean Markham with the "FedEx Option" found on the CarMax corporate website. This policy allows for remote paperwork processing. Only after being caught misrepresenting corporate policy did the manager "find" a way to honor the original 5.74% rate. Key Issues for Public Record: Intimidation: Using three male staff members to corner and "bully" a young female buyer is unacceptable. Financial Bad Faith: They attempted to double her interest rate despite a $10,000 down payment and existing corporate approval. Retaliatory Behavior: Once the "FedEx Option" was forced, the staff became non-communicative, making her wait an additional 90 minutes for a car that was already prepped and redo the paper work for a third time! If you are a young buyer, do not enter this building alone. They will ignore their own corporate policies and use "training moments" as an excuse for what is clearly a coordinated money grab. read more

Service department is horribly slow. They have had my truck for over three weeks. It took them 2 1/2 weeks to diagnose the issue with a window. After being promised that my truck would be ready. It's looking like it'll be next week before I get my truck back. I have to call six or seven times before I can speak to someone in the service department currently waiting on the service department manager to return my call as we speak. I am in the market for a car. What a disaster - a notoriously corrupt business. Now the Carmax's & Carvana's of the world are trying to white wash & sanitize this industry. The excuse is "the Internet has leveled the playing field. " Nonsense. This is code for price fixing and gouging. This business is being run like a cartel. Transportation should not cost a minimum of $30 - 40K. We are all carrying too much debt. A $500 a month car payment is obnoxious. I went in to buy a car yesterday and for my first time buying one it was a super simply process and my salesperson (Emeray) was super kind and very informative, i went in to test drive a 2014 honda civic and loved the car. I did notice a smell and found that the air cabin filter was very dirty, i mentioned it to Emeray and said he'd get that taken care of this monday because service was already closed and scheduled for me to come back and get it replaced with no charge. Paper work didn't take as long as i thought it would compared to bigger dealerships and i was out within 2 hours of starting paperwork. (come with a decent down payment, it makes it 10x easier to get approved quicker especially if your a young buyer with no credit history or little credit) i highly recommend coming here i would definitely come back if i wanted to get into another car later in the future. read more

I've dealt with this Carmax a couple of times, and this last visit perfectly exemplified why these guys are my go-to when searching for a used vehicle. I had the pleasure of working with Diego upon my initial visit, and even though I had to weather the inconvenience of waiting for a replacement title for the Jetta I'd had delivered, he made the experience a positive one. He was quick to respond to my frequent text messages (sometimes on his days off) and never made me feel as though I was a nuisance. When the day finally came to head into Carmax to purchase my vehicle, Diego was not going to be there, but he set me up with his co-worker Jaime and we were in and out in about an hour. I've made a couple of follow up requests, post sale, and Diego has still been on top of it, working to make sure I get what I need. Well done Diego, Jaime and Carmax Oak Lawn! read more

Go see Matt he definitely made my car experience a 5 star it was challenging but he made sure I left with a car!!!

I originally left a great review because the service was quick and efficient but I realized when the tire pressure light turned on almost immediately after purchase and the brakes were just as iffy as they were when I left that I had been "bamboozled." I asked the person I was working with about the brakes when I took it for a ride and he said they were fine .. the car had been sitting for a while. These brakes are super questionable. I also wasn't informed that this car had been modified.. so they made it push to start but the seats are manual.. which is GHETTO. And one of the tires just won't inflate no matter how long I sit outside with a pump on it.. now granted they do give the 30 day return, but I had Sooo much going on I didn't get a chance to get back in there.. I would have liked to not stop and do such a tedious thing .. give a decent car the first time!! Also - I saw someone on here mention she paid for a transfer and they later denied her.. I think the same might've happened to me. I paid for a Lexus. Newer better.. when my credit was better and then suddenly there was an issue with the title .. they asked me if I would wait for it or pick another car.. and I said I'll wait and then they never called me back about the car I paid to be transferred to Chicago from Memphis.. a year later my other car dies and they happily give me a busted ass Volkswagen.. so there maybe some racism or selectiveness happening.. which is sad and unprofessional. read more

We went to this CarMax in Oak Lawn, IL yesterday with our 1994 Cadillac Fleetwood, 70K original miles, immaculately detailed, one owner, garage kept and was very disappointed with the offer they made us. We had an appraiser previously value it at $12K, their computer valued it at $11K ( which we weren't supposed to have seen the screen appraisal) lol, this clown offered us $1500.00! Are you kidding me!! We had heard that CarMax were in the business of selling overpriced vehicles and low balling sellers but we went just to see for ourselves. CarMax is true to their word! We will buy your car even if you don't buy ours! We decided to get rid of our Ford Focus 2011. I bought the car with a couple miles on it from Hawk Ford and the cars over all condition was OK. The entire process of inspection was a breeze. Someone came and checked out the car from the interior to the under carriage. They took it for a test drive and in less than 30 minutes we were sitting in the lobby speaking to Jonathan Lee. He was very personable and went over the entire inspection and the value of the car. We agreed to initial price quoted and he informed us that the paperwork would take about 30 minutes. Since the car title was under two names, both parties needed to be present. As soon as both parties arrived, Christina from the business department took over. We advised Christina that my co-signer had to leave within 30 minutes and if she can prepare the paperwork within that time frame it would be great. She finished the agreement in 20 minutes! I was amazed at the speed and the delivery! Thank you so much CarMax! read more

If you have desire to be infantilized & patronized this is the store for you. Specially Christiane. Your personal requests will be approved or disapproved by a salesperson!! Truly unbelievable. I work in an Operating Room where I can't place calls. I made a simple request to have the terms & rate of the loan approval and appraisal emailed just like the other two companies I made this request to did without any problem. This site for whatever reason refused to be of any assistance. Hence, I finally had a quick break and called to get the information. I still couldn't! So again, I asked for it to be emailed as I had to return to work. Still nothing!!!! This is completely insane! Now Christiane Is saying I must prove my identity!!! Whatttt?! If I just put in an application yesterday who else would be calling and emailing to find out my rate?! Go ahead and share my rate! I don't care!! If this site can't even do this simple request I question what would happen if I had a dire needs. If it's a 'do it my way or hit the highway' kinda place I will definitely be taking my business elsewhere. I heard good things about this location, so I wanted to have my car serviced here. However, this was a HUGE mistake! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING went right. If you want a quick and go the point review: Go to another CarMax and avoid the headache. If you want a detailed review of my experience at this location: First, I was not able to get in contact with the service manager Jason prior to getting my serviced. Over a period of 10 days I contacted him three or four times and he never felt the need to return any of my calls. Even the day I showed up for service he didn't speak to me or acknowledge that I was trying to get in contact with him. My personal recommendation for him is to be retrained by Tom (store manager). Second, I was under the impression my car was going to be in and out the same day. To my surprise, they needed to keep my car so they gave me a loaner. This is not the worse situation since I was able to get a loaner. However, my service associate failed to tell me it was a POSSIBILITY that I would get pulled over by the police for "stolen license plates" because dealers have to get updated plates every year but the license plate number stays the same. Therefore, I was extremely pissed when I was pulled over for "stolen license plates" on a car that CarMax loaned to me. Third, what they needed to service was not completely serviced when I did put my car up. Overall, I wasted time, energy, and my last days of summer dealing with a team of incompetent people at this location. If you wish to have a better experience, I strongly suggest you go to another CarMax. The location in Tinley Park is a bit further out depending on where you are driving from but it's a bigger store and a production store so they are better able to meet your needs. read more

I purchased a car with only 5000 miles on it only to have the transmission fail during the first week. It's now at a Kia dealer being repaired - under warranty-- but because of supply chain issues, a new transmission will not likely arrive for 90+ days. It's obvious that Carmax did not do a comprehensive inspection as promised. Working on a replacement vehicle with Carmax but about to walk away and wait FOR THE TWO WEEKS IT TAKES YOU TO GET YOUR REFUND CHECK! Positives: got a reasonable price on my trade-in. Everybody is super nice! Cons: obvious from my description. Each person you speak to about remedying a problem gives you an explanation that doesn't jive with what someone else has told you. I wrote a great review of this store about 2 years ago after selling Carmax my car. Well I went to try and see about purchasing one from them recently and they gave me such a run around about not having insurance and that even if I had someone in the car with insurance that person had to drive it. First of all, I test drove 2 other cars from them last month with no personal insurance just my brother-in-law showing he was covered, no problems. Also, why would I have insurance when I don't have a car to begin with for over 2 years? My insurance man told me he couldn't give me insurance for a car I didn't already purchase. Soooo how do you test drive a car? I was very saddened by this situation because it was a good experience when I sold them the old car. Sorry Carmax in Oak Lawn, can't trust you anymore. read more

The only reason I would visit CarMax again is if I completely exhausted all of my other sources. I went in there last night to sell my car. I made an appointment as per their request and arrived a few minutes early. Not real sure why an appointment is even necessary as there are no customers in there, except one guy who was buying a car. TWO hours it took to complete a fairly simple transaction. I signed more papers than if I were applying for a mortgage. I wound up only getting half what they had quoted me online. Their offer was actually insulting. Yes, I could have declined, but at that point, I just wanted to be done with it all. So much back and forth and just plain waiting and for what? Each time I had to go back to the desk and ask what was the delay. Finally I told them I'll stand right here until you get this sorted out. I hadn't planned on camping out here all night.
