Terrible treatment!! I first purchased a Toyota FOUR runner...I explained to the salesperson Dan that I wanted a 4wheel drive vehicle so I could pull a camper. After my recent breast cancer diagnosis I was going to retire and travel as long as I was able. We discussed this at length. So...after purchasing the vehicle I thought I'd practice putting my new suv in four wheel drive. Guess what??! My Toyota "FOUR RUNNER"...was actually a TWO WHEEL drive vehicle!! And when I took it back to trade for a real 4wheel on their lot they said too bad and would only give me $10,000 less then I paid for the Toyota even though they priced it at the original 43,900 that I paid. And I had put less than 1,000 miles on it They said too bad...and they said I should have noticed it was a 2wheel drive. And I was a return customer!! If I could rate this location, it would be no stores. I purchased my vehicle on June 24. I've noticed things that were wrong with it and reported it I live out of state so I took it to my local Carmax. There has been a lot of work on the vehicle, it not not passed inspection, I have been unsuccessful with contacting anyone at the Lancaster location. This has been a horrible experience. I ordered a car that was out of state and requested information whether the front bumper had any signs of damage on it and if so, I wanted to see it in pictures or video. I was told there was NO damage on the front bumper. The car arrives with a significant enough dent Troy (CarMax manager) offered to have it fixed. When I got the car back after it was "fixed" it was almost worse than before, and after taking the car to get properly fixed at Faulkner Collision Center, the discovered more damage from potentially improperly fitting the bumper back on my car. I was literally handed a bumper that was damaged on each corner without paint on it, orange peeling, and blistering on the entire bumper. This was their completed work. They refused to pay to properly have the bumper repaired and fully painted, costing me $5700 out of pocket, then another $900 for a rental car while my car was getting properly replaced and painted. The parking sensors were not turned back on when I got the car back from CarMax, and Tai (store manager) did offer to have this paid for kindly enough. However this still leaves me with $4000 out of pocket to correctly repair and repaint the bumper, and another $900 for the rental car. CarMax lied to me about the damage, or it occurred during transit, damaged the corners of the bumper while improperly fitting it back on, could not repaint it to prevent orange peeling or blister on the entire bumper, refuse to recognize the bumper now needs replaced, refuse to recognize that they caused more damage improperly fitting the bumper on my car discovered by Faulkner Collison Center, reported that paint and fitment job was the best they could provide, and their corporate team told me provided zero help at all. Years ago an unprofessional 23 year old friend was able to paint a bumper and fit it on my car out of his parents garage with better quality than CarMax and without damaging that car more. Overall, I had a positive experience buying my Tesla MYP. I originally reserved a MYP with 1k miles for a couple thousand less. They sold my "reserved" car to someone else. So, that wasn't great. But, I found one with a white interior, tow hitch, and garage door opener with 3k miles and it cost maybe 2k more. Their cars are all priced differently for the same year/model depending on the location. Some are fair, some are expensive. Mine was fairly priced. I specifically wanted a 2022 and not a 2023 since Tesla got rid of the sensors and moved to vision. I got a low mileage car that was only a few months old in the exact configuration I wanted. I appreciate that you can bring back the car. Anyone who has dealt directly with Tesla knows it can be awful. I have no problem paying more not to deal with Tesla. Buying at Carmax is like buying a car at Walmart and is pretty low brow, but it can work if they have what you are looking for. There was no pressure and it didn't take long. Dont use their financing. Go to your local credit union if you are not paying cash. read more

I later learned that the keys I was given for vehicle was not the appropriate keys for the vehicle because the keys did not include the side door operations so I have been manually opening and closing the doors. As a previous employee it's a complete disaster. Whether you're an employee or customer. Non stop newly sold cars come back. I missed a few days from a car accident and the flu and lost my position. Loss prevention accused me of something where as the warranty company came out and confirmed it to get the customer a new motor. Their own people agreed and approved the job proving i was correct... Tim, Troy are puppets with false precedence.Joined together against me up to push me out. Claimed i commited fraud but all i did was tell the truth and i can prove it. I got the customer a new engine after the vehicle sat there for a month.Their service team tries and are under paid, also lack complete mechanical knowledge. I'm publicly disgusted with their false employee succession plans it's a dead end customer or employee. Highly not recommended. I wish I could give 0 stars I spent 100s on uniform stuff that I'll never use. All there cars have issues but they push them and they come back to service. Buyer beware !! Almost all their cars have body work and there service department has to deal with all the missed malfunctions. STAY AWAY !!!! Tim, Troy, you have anything to say you have my number. I bought a car from carmax and had a wonderful experience the first time around as a first time car buyer. The second time was this past year in August 2021. Great service at purchase, but very disappointed with customer service following an issue with the tires. 2 weeks after purchase a tire got a hole and went flat. When I took the car to the garage, they patched the hole and told me all of the tires were dry rotted. I went back to carmax and they payed for the patch but said the tires "passed all of their standards and are safe for driving". One year later- I still have the tires. I took the car to a DIFFERENT garage to get a state inspection. I just got a call that all of the tires are dry rotted and it will cost $700 for new tires to pass inspection. TWO garages are telling me the same thing and carmax refused to give me new tires. I am a VERY DISAPPOINTED customer and will not be returning. As a 20 something woman, I feel my concern was dismissed by carmax customer service and I was TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF by this company. This happened at the Carmax in Lancaster, PA. read more

I really want to have good things to say about them, the staff are friendly and pleasant, but the service department is just awful when it comes to actually getting things done and done right. I bought my car from CarMax in California, two years ago. It's been reasonably good to me, some bumps out of the gate, but CarMax promptly fixed the issues. From then on service at the Burbank location was just fine. Cue moving to Lancaster. I understand this has been a difficult time to run a service business, but hear me out: I took my car in for a simple service and they informed me that I needed a new axle. Got a new axle, couple months later went back for another service, the car is getting older and I want to be proactive. This time they tell me it looks like I've had an after-market axle put in and it's faulty -- WAIT A MINUTE, YOU GUYS put the axle in.... so I let bygones be bygones as the warranty covered the fix, and I had a SECOND axle put in by CarMax. They did the rest of the service and assured me everything was fine. A couple of weeks later, I went to have an oil change at Valvoline and the service gentleman informed me that my coolant tank looked muddy, and like it may need flushed. I called CarMax, pretty pissed off, because I would have thought this would've been flagged in the SERVICE they were supposed to be doing on the car. Call CarMax, they tell me they didn't see any issue so I have to urge them to get in. When they do, they tell me -- as I told them - that the coolant system needs a full flush. Fast forward to now, about 4 weeks after that service. My car headlight is having an issue, which I sought help from a local garage for diagnostics on, and they identified it as an electrical board issue -- suggesting I take it to the dealer as the car is STILL under warranty (and still under 100k miles). Called CarMax, who's service department is now only accepting vehicles that have been purchased at CarMax in the last 90 days. Respectfully, ARE YOU KIDDING ME? First of all, if someone's just walked off the lot with a damn vehicle, it shouldn't need a service or break down in the first three months, so that's a testament to the capabilities of this garage. Second of all, what about all of the other people who have warranties? Now those are just null and void and we get to pay out of pocket because you guys either can't staff enough employees to take on the demands of your location? Like I said, I really, really want to have good things to say here -- but I just don't. In fact, I don't think I've been more frustrated with a vehicle or dealer ever before in my life. It just feels like one thing after another and every possible roadblock in the way that could be. This was my first car buying experience with Carmax but won't be my last. I was sucked in by their commercials touting no pressure salespeople, no price haggling etc., and that's exactly what you get. Their cars can be priced slightly higher than some of their competitors, but what you get is piece of mind when buying from them. They do thorough inspections and stand behind their vehicles. Not something you normally get from the used vehicle market. Our salesperson Myrta was excellent. She was helpful in transporting the car we wanted from VA to Lancaster, PA. Emailing and calling throughout the process with updates and to answer any questions. The entire experience was positive and the polar opposite of every other car buying experience I've ever had. We will definitely be going back to Myrta and Carmax when we need our next ride. read more

It was great to be able to look for a car without a sales person asking questions and wanting to help. We were sent to the right area to look for a vehicle that we might be interested in checking out. We were free to do this on our own. When we were finished looking a sales person offered to give us the information about the vehicle and move it to an area where we could check out the inside and test drive if we wanted to. We left without buying but put a hold on one we liked but wanted to check other places. We decided on the carmax vehicle and the purchasing process was very simple and went smoothly. Sorry long review. So my husband was mostly involved in the purchase of a vehicle. He dealt with them and they seemed to be very friendly and helpful in the purchasing process. Now with all that said the car my husband choose was not what I wanted and when it arrived to Lancaster you would of thought they would of "inspected" and look for any major damage, marks, and issues with engine. Right off the bat we noticed a cut on a seat, rear window blade missing, and the rear seat side zipper busted wide open and broken. There was something else but they said they would fix fine no big deal. He signed papers and we drove it home. They schedule the following Wednesday to service it. He was 11 minutes late that morning and they told him they could not do it since he was late. So he brought back home and I drove it a bit. I started to notice some big kicks while driving definitely was not normal. Told husband about it. He didn't notice that when he had it told home to take it out and then he did. Upon everything else there was tape on rear bumper that wasn't noticed before. We decided to trade it back for another taking advantage of 30 day return. I did not want to have the car at our place so it sat in their parking lot they would not take the keys. During the time of waiting for the other car we decided to forgo everything and just cancel and not buy a car. We drove to facility and stated it could not be turned in since the person was not there that does that. They did take a set of keys to service the car since they never fixed the issues that it had and to check transmission. Well upon their mechanic driving the car he has an accident in it with the garage door. They gave us a loaner meanwhile. The car was finally finished week later and went in to return loaner and the car. They were so rude and nasty. They knew we were no longer buying a car and the saleswoman had been trying to keep pushing for a sale when our minds were made. Car was returned. They brought up the damages from the accident saying that they need to call our insurance and turn the damages into them. We told them insurance was canceled and their mechanic is the one that had the accident so they are responsible for damages he created. Obviously I get it they are mad they lost a sale. But we were eventually going to buy another car when we found the one we really wanted and probably would of returned. We will not recommend them or return sad because we have recommended carmax in past and know they even purchased a car from them. We did notice our time there that there was a good bit of people that seemed unsatisfied but all unknown reasons so take that with a grain of salt. read more

We have bought a vehicle from this dealer before and decided to try again. Staff are friendly and for the main part, no pressure. However, they do not budge whatsoever on trade in or vehicles. We had a budget to stay under and we're over by 300 dollars. They wouldn't budge at all. We went to another dealership for the same exact car and got it 4,000 cheaper, warranty included and gave us more for our trade ins by 3000. The Lancaster location went above and beyond the level of service I expected. We were almost done with our purchase and the store was closing (9pm) when an issue came up that required multiple people to solve. There were 4-5 associates who stayed until 10:30 to make sure we would be able to drive off the lot with our "new" car that night. To top it off, I am 37 wks pregnant and they offered multiple times to go across the street to McDonald's to get me food since we hadn't eaten dinner. First time buying at CarMax. Saw a car I liked in Wash. DC area, and they happily shipped it here to Lancaster, PA. They detailed and cleaned the car before looking at it. No pressure to buy it. Dave Little was our man there, and he was awesome - thanks Dave! Dont know why, but was always skeptical of the Carmax concept. Now I'm a convert. The whole experience was pressure free. Love the no-haggle concept. Probably could have got same car for hundreds less, but that would be after days/weeks of searching and haggling. No thanks. Everyone was friendly and professional - even other sales guys who had nothing to do with me, but wanted to chat. They did the usual sales pitches for extras and warranties, but that's to be expected. But no pressure - "just the facts sir". Probably now a CarMax client for life. read more

I drove about a hour to get to this carmax because it was a truck I wanted to see. When I walked in I was on the phone, so no one greeted me and I was okay with that as I wanted to walk the lot. Once I walked the lot and viewed a few trucks that I didn't plan on viewing, I walked in and no one acknowledged me until I finally asked a young lady could she tell me why the truck I was looking for wasn't on the lot. She asked me if I was on the waiting list and I said no, and she looked up the vehicle in question. She said it was still in the warehouse and she added me to the waiting list and took my phone number and said someone would get me and bring the truck around. I went to the waiting room and waited about 20 mins and came back out to the sales floor and I saw at least 5 salesmen just conversating with one another at each others desk, but no one had reached out to help me/contact me. When I made eye contact with two of them they tried to look as if they were busy. I walked out of the store and didn't look back. I noticed I NEVER received that phone call to be helped even hours after I walked out. If it wasn't for the vehicle I wanted being there I would never set foot in there again. I have been in many Carmax establishments but this was the worse customer service I ever experienced. read more

I have been deeling with carmax for awhile 2 years to be exact I feel they really drug this out in Hope's that I couldnt do anything to get rid of this car.. I trusted them because they no better then I , I am no mechanic right this nightmare all started with a rattle that took them numerous attempts to fix. took my tow hitch off and put it back on etc.. just to find out it was my shocks. took it in for a noise something started smoking under the hood. told them the transmission wasnt shifting righ they told me that's how they run, a year after told me they wuld appraise my car at 1000 dollars because the tranny is going out and the car is rusting ther is no way in 2 years a car rusts that bad that the value decreases that much. I ow 14 on the pos and its worth like 3. they have attempted to fix a hissing in my dash for a year now . I was told I never heard a car make this noise then I was told it is normal. I had a wheel fall off while my husband was on the highway, they fixed it as a curtousy funny how another wheel just came loose this past month same wheel they took off to inspect it in the begining of December. then come to find out at some point the wrong lug nuts where put on the car but they fixed it as a courtesy to me as the customer because apparantly the fact that they took the tire off not even a month prior they didnt notice someone put the wrong lug nuts on, or what about the first time the tire came off, or what about the fact you guys have done work to my car around the wheels multiple times in 2 year, 5 or 6 times actually and no one noticed the wrong lugs where on it? Or maybe the fact that this was your fault and there are lives at risk when the wrong lug nuts are on a tire, my 5 kids the child I babysit and all of my girlscouts that have been in my car mine and my husbands and anyone else who has been in my car or hell the road around me there lives where all actually at danger if the wheel that fell off the first time would have went flying on the highway, or if it actually would have came off the second time all 5 kids where in my car !!! But thanks for your curtousy!! Then I had to argue about them fixing the transmission after it was already a problem I brought up and was told it is nothing they had my car while fixing said transmission for 3 months i was told it was a transmission rebuilt they actually put a used transmission in it oh and when I got the damn thing back after 3 months they broke the damn radiater so it had to go back again !!! And you guessed it that didnt get done right either the busted the grill near the radiater and never tightened the bolts and I could go on and on and on with this car it was as in an accident we didnt no about till I got it appraised at a Chevy dealer so make sure you ask for the facts make sure you see them !!! have they tried to fix the issues yes they have and I get it I got a used car but there is no reason for this you guys drug this out so long telling me twice you where doing 125 point checks or whatever to the point that It has been 2 years n now that I have just had it with the car and I want out of it I'm told the best you can d is trade in value you have been very Courteous so far so without a lawyer (wich I have a consultation with tomorrow) i am going to get no where you guys sold me a bad car just make it right I'm not asking for a lot all I wanted was for you to come close to what I ow as a trade in so I can afford to get out of it I no it is used and I drove it for 2 year I also no that when you leave the lot the value decreases but I also no had I not trusted you with your pointless 125 point checks I would have tried to get out of this car a lot sooner and I wouldn't be here !! I was initially happy with my purchase here. I have moved to NJ and have been trying for MANY MONTHS to have a copy of the title sent to DMV in NJ so I can register the car here. After many phone calls, emails and faxs' sent CarMax has completely dropped the ball and I have an out of date registration and PA plates on a car that has been in for a year. We have spoken to corporate and this dealership and our time so far has been wasted. My suggestion would be that if you need any assistance with your vehicle that requires customer service after you purchase your car .... go somewhere else .... ANYWHERE ELSE! read more

Greeted as we entered. Sales Associate was helpful, efficient, no pressure. Test drove a few cars. On second trip decided which one we wanted, given total price (no attempts to upsell). Paperwork was handled professionally & effieciently. Terrific. I received the title in the mail several weeks later and noticed my name was misspelled. My daughter, a first time car buyer was so excited to purchase a VW Jetta she found through CarMax. The car needed to come from MD, and she was given a projected date for it to arrive on the Lancaster lot.. as the car was coming from out of state , She was told the car was in and they were awaiting the title. When she didn't hear from CarMax by the 9/17, the date they gave her, she reached out with two phone calls, left messages and received no cAll back. Finally, she called the title and transfer department and was told the car had been sold! The staff took no ownership for the mistake, and said things like this just happen sometimes. Wow!! My daughter was in tears! We were shocked at the poor customer service!!! Human error happens, but the absence of concern and remorse means we will not shop at this location in the future, and will pass the concerns in to others ! Extremely disappointed. read more

The Toyota Highlander 2013 we were interested in came in from VA with a sticker stating 60 day warranty and the sales guy said they would honor it even though PA state law only requires used car dealers to honor 30 days of warranty. At final closure the sales guy stated to get the 60 day warranty we had to drive home with the vehicle that evening. We were not prepared for that and stated we would be in the next day to pick it up. The sales guy stated take it or leave it, if you come in tomorrow it will be back down to 30 days, so we picked up and left not liking the high pressure sales tactic being used on us. In addition the sales guy tried to up sell us on CAR Max extended warranty which after some research we discovered was it was through a 3rd party and had a lot of customer complaints in Yelp and Google about how much of a rip off it was. read more

I went in looking for a jeep suv I had seen on their website. The Internet price was 22k and was again quoted to me by Mike R.(our salesman), but when the car was brought to the Lancaster lot, the price was increased by 2 grand after I test drove it. I went to another lot and found the same vehicle newer with less miles and cheaper. I do not recommend this dealership. Increasing prices after hooking the customer is illegal and unethical. I plan to tell everyone to stay away from carmax due to this incident, including the attorney general and the better business Bureau. read more

I was interested in a Toyota Tundra from Carmax of Salisbury Md. It took 7 business days (11 calendar days) to ship the car 300 miles. The most troublesome part of this experience is the truck was almost totally repainted and was not disclosed on Carfax or by Carmax. Their paper work showed that they replaced the left rear tail light lens. That's where the paint defects, tape marks, dirt in paint and overspray started. I had a professional meet me at the dealership and it took him only minutes to confirm what I was seeing. The truck had a major repaint job to fix something on the front rear quarter panel. It was such a poor job that they even taped around the TRD decal instead of replacing the decal. There was fresh paint on the TRD decal. We're talking a $35,000 truck that was as dishonest as the day is long. That was the first and last time I will look at Carmax. read more

Wow! We wandered the lot for almost an hour & then walked into the lobby. While I was thankful we were not accosted, I expected someone to approach us once we went inside. 15 minutes standing in the lobby, counting 9 salespeople talking amongst themselves & No One offered assistance. We were completely ignored. That location certainly didn't receive our commission. Ever. read more
