They have cars in every price range and the sales people are quite laid back. I wanted to test drive a few and was able to, no hassle, no pressure, just a great experience. It was around 1900 when I decided on a car and my outside credit union financing wasn't open any longer. This being the case, I opted to run a credit app at CM to compare rates. I signed with them, at a higher interest rate, because I knew I could replace their financing with mine in three days, for FREE! I also opted for Max Care, their extended warranty until I could explore the warrant offered by my credit union. Turns out the CU was a better deal, so I cancelled the Max Care, no wino questions asked. Paperwork took about 20 mins and then I got to see MY new carM. I bought my very first car here. I remember it like it was yesterday. It was 7 years ago, when I was a college freshman. I was 18. I bought a 5-year old Nissan Altima emergently because I had a new job that started the next day. Now I needed some wheels to get there! They have a huge inventory. Their salespeople are very low pressure and personable. All of them. My parents aren't really into haggling, and they liked that the prices were fixed so they took me here to buy a car. Modern day Christine and her husband, however, actually like haggling, so Carmax isn't our first choice based on that alone. Carmax will includes a free 30-day warranty with their cars regardless of new, used, or if you purchased an extended warranty. I have not found another used car dealer that offers that service. My "new" Altima at the time had its window motors stuck and they all needed to be replaced. I didn't notice this until a week later on the highway, and they replaced all of them without incident. The experience was relatively quick and painless. Can easily be your one-stop shop if you don't like driving around and negotiating makes you weak in the knees. Fast-forward to today. Honestly, I like going to Carmax to test drive. They have a huge inventory, and the salespeople are all actually really cool and helpful (Hunter and Tracy helped me more recently). I would also take my car here first to sell. They will give you an appraisal good for a week. They didn't have the precise make and models I wanted, but did allow me to test drive similar cars. They did not have any 2013 Nissan Altimas as of yesterday, so I left. Their car quote was fair. They offered me about a grand less than blue book value, but really, my now 13 year old Nissan Altima was limping. Long red lights made me nervous as the RPM would go nuts and it would start shuddering. When I later found the car I want at a price I liked, they offered me less than what Carmax did. All I did was flash Carmax's offer and they matched it. I'm sorry to use you Carmax, but you are so consumer-friendly and your salespeople are all super cool, its hard not to. Bought one of my previous cars here. A 2015 Nissan Versa. Had low mileage and was in excellent condition. What I loved most about purchasing from here is that they aren't like most dealerships. They don't work off of commission so they aren't just trying to get you to buy something right away. They help you look through your options and even help guide you as to what you're looking for. I felt no pressure or even obligation to purchase my car that day which was so refreshing considering my past experiences with dealerships. Bill Dearman was the guy who sold me my car and I'd like to give him some praise. Not only was he extremely helpful throughout the entire process, but he was also very patient. I visited CarMax in Arlington, TX with my brother-in-law this weekend, as he was looking to change up his ride. He spotted a 9-year old Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder on CarMax's website with only 8800 miles, so had to go see it. From the photos and description on the website, and the very low mileage, the vehicle appeared to be in mint condition, and it was priced accordingly. Given that the car was priced for perfection with a premium price tag, and CarMax brags about their 125+ inspection and Quality Certification process, we didn't expect to find anything noteworthy. First of all, we found some paint damage...three blemishes that someone tried to buff out, but made considerably worse in the process. It looked like they buffed these spots with steel wool, rather than rubbing compound and a soft cloth. I can only assume that these spots were missed in the inspection process, because they would have been easy to correct with rubbing compound and a few minutes of buffing and polishing. CarMax agreed they could correct these defects. The fourth paint defect, however, required much more serious attention. There was a streak of scratched paint along the raised crease near the bottom of the passenger door which was about 2 feet long, nearly 1/2" wide at one end, tapering to a fine scratch at the other. The paint was scratched off down to bare metal, then was touched up with a non-matching red paint...looked like red Tremclad rust paint or something...not an automotive paint, and nowhere near a reasonable color match. The touch up covered the bare metal, but did not fill the scratch. This was definitely a seriously amateur touch up job, so clearly had to be done by the previous owner. This can not be fixed with buffing and touch up paint...it will require professional body work, as the scratch needs to be filled/sanded/primed/painted/blended/buffed/polished. CarMax was not willing to do anything about this...neither repair it nor adjust the price. The most concerning issue, though, was the tires. They were original to the car, and the date code on the sidewall showed that they were a few months short of 10 years old. The NTSB and NHTSA specify that tires are unsafe at 10 years of age, regardless of how they look or how much tread they have, and vehicle manufacturers specify that tires should be replaced after 6 years of age, including the spare, regardless of condition. Given that the tires had only 8800 miles on them, there was more than 4/32" of remaining tread depth. When I asked the salesman to either replace the tires or adjust the price (4 new tires of the same size/brand/model installed and balanced is $650), he said that as long as the tread depth was more than 4/32", it passed CarMax's requirements, and the age of the tire didn't matter. I asked him if I could produce a set of tires from 1962 with more than 4/32" tread depth, would he be comfortable letting his family ride on them? He repeated the 4/32" tread depth mantra. The salesman became defensive and argumentative about the safety of the tires, and wouldn't acknowledge that it was a concern, nor would he take my concern to a Manager. He said that the NTSB guidelines specify 4/32" tread depth, not age, and CarMax follows NTSB guidelines on tires; clearly he had no idea what the NTSB guidelines actually are. I understand CarMax has a no haggle policy, but this is a safety issue, and one that is obviously a blindspot for CarMax, so it was disappointing that they summarily dismissed it without any consideration whatsoever. Needless to say, we lost our trust and confidence in CarMax, and my brother-in-law did not buy from them. It wouldn't surprise me if some other unsuspecting, trusting, uninformed person buys this car from CarMax and then has a tire failure on the highway, resulting in property damage, personal injury, and/or death...CarMax should know better. read more

Me and my family were involved in a wreck and stopped in this place to look for what we thought would be a good place to purchase a car. However you only get 7 days to return a vehicle. Too bad we went ten days over and car started to just fall apart. Back door wont open and engine makes loud noise. On top of that we have to wait almost a week for "repair" on door and engine. The process of buying the car was smooth and I got exactly what I was looking for. This is my second time buying a car from them and haven't had a problem with them until now. I haven't received my plates so I called because my paper plates expire in two weeks and I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a delay or anything. I call and told them the situation and whoever answered the phone had a nasty attitude. She didn't ask for my info she just asked when my paper plates expired so I told her January 12 and she gave me an attitude and told me "that's still in two weeks". So I told her I understand but I've gotten a car there before and it never took this long and I tried to explain that my sister got a car there this year and it didn't take this long either but she interrupted me to tell me that the DMV is backed up like if i was supposed to know this. Which I understand but there was no reason for her to get an attitude. Like if you don't like your job quit. I did proceed to get an attitude with her as well. I will match your energy. This place has really put me in a hard position, I was grateful to get approved and it come so easy and my down payment was affordable for me. But my car stayed in the shop on & off for a month. So I wasn't able to trade it in after the 10day guarantee they offer. After about 3 months everything they claim to fix started acting up again. And when i called it would be an out of pocket expense. I ended up having to replace the coolant system as well. And now the brake system is going out which I was told that my brakes were replaced and new. Needless to 6 months with this car hasn't been the prettiest time. In the last 10 years, I have bought 4-5 cars from carmax (irving) this is the first time I bought from this location. I'm familiar w the process of how they do things and what's the fastest way to get in and out. Long story short (kinda), I let the saleswoman, Aqua, rush me into doing a "3 day transfer" where you get financed thru carmax and you have 3 days to transfer to your lender if they're closed when you're trying to purchase the vehicle. She said it would be a quick and painless process, I wasn't gonna have to do anything except sign some docs via email and boom be done. I told her as long as it wasn't gonna be a hassle I'm ok with it. She assured me it wasn't. But it was far from easy and if you don't get it done in their time frame then your basically stuck being financed thru them. Not only is the process annoying, when I ask her to send me a document she makes it seem as if I'm bothering her. She's got her sale already, she doesn't care until after I threaten to take the car back. Fast forward to a month or two later, after I've already made my first car payment to my bank.. carmax calls and says I'm past due and I owe them money. The customer service attempted to reach the store but after several attempts told me it would be better to go in person. Amaris I think is his name was able to get down to the bottom of things and fixed it but I shouldn't even have had to go thru that. Aqua really left a bad taste in my mouth about carmax. Okay. So i came around 830 and waited about 5-6 minutes before even being acknowledged in the building, they close at 9 to get an appraisal done on my car. They (Luis , the manager) places me on the waiting list, advised me that i was behind another individual and it would possibly be a 20-30 minute wait,& i would be notified via phone when they were ready. As time passes by, i sit and wait, here it is 920 i walk back inside of carmax and wait and wait, as the manager Luis and another associate finish up their important conversation , placing the customer second and not first. Once they realized i was there, Luis again asked (as if i hadn't already talked to him) did i need any help. I advised him i had been waiting an hour for an appraisal. He fumbled over all of his words just to say, the buyers had left for the night, HOW? and no one ever called my phone as he advised me when i asked how i would know when it's my turn. He tried apologizing saying he'd fill my car up with gas, then.. advised that it would be better to go fill my own car up and bring the receipt back for cash back, why do that & you have gas in your service center as you first told me you would do. When we arrived, Ronda didn't know why we were here, nor did she know anything about the make/model of the car we spoke about when we set the appointment. Within the first 5 minutes, she told us how "slammed" they were three different times... as an excuse for being so unorganized. We were inclined to just leave so she could assist all the other customers she seemed to be focused on. She put us in the system, took our keys, and said it would be about 30 minutes. I used the facilities while we waited. The toilet paper on the roll was WET!! It took Ronda just over 30 minutes to get back to us, which is the only reason why I gave the 2nd star. Since I hate the game of the driving quickly through the used car lot so you leave before the sales guy has time to chase you down, we tried carmax. It's a totally different beast. In some ways better and some ways not so great. To get started browsing, you must walk through the building where a sales person comes to assist you (or for a cynic sees you as their next paycheck). While that situation was a little awkward, the sales people are not pushy...even when compared to non-used car sales people. They do a good job of educating you on the value you get from a carmax purchase (ie, the security of knowing your car was thoroughly checked and meets their criteria for sales). They only keep cars that meet their criteria and send others to auction. If I remember correctly they sent more than half of the trade ins to auction. After you learn about the carmax approach, you can go and view the stock. They have many vehicles on hand and available for test drives. It's actually very nice to be able to try out the varieties available if you are unsure of exactly what you want. After picking out the cars for test drives, the sales person accompanies you on a drive. The sales people make the same commission regardless of the cost of the car sold so they seem to be more inclined to make sure you are happy than to just buy a more expensive car. If ready to purchase, the sales person walks you through the process themselves up until the point you are handed the keys. Overall, I got a car in excellent condition for a fair price. The best part of it all was that I have confidence that my car is in good condition driving it off of the lot. I didn't have any assurances of that in buying used cars in the past. The downsides of the process are pricing. No negotiation is allowed. This is nice for some people (myself included) as it's "what you see is what you get" in terms of price. The other part which was more difficult was the trade in. If we would have traded the car in, they would have given us a wholesale price, not a trade in price. This is due to the fact that the company spends a lot of time inspecting and tuning any car to be resold. I would recommend carmax to my friends and fellow YELPERS. read more

What you see is what you get with CarMax. Honest and transparent. Everything is in writing and straightforward. You may not like the sale price or their offer price; but it is firm and there is no haggling. Quality products for the most part. A much smoother experience than a traditional used car retailer. The only not so pleasant part of their process is the high pressure sell on their MaxCare service plans. They will do everything they can to steer you into buying a plan including presenting cars with a price that will accommodate the cost of a service plan. Consumer magazines and advisors caution about the follies of buying an extended service plan. Extended service plans for any product are very profitable for the retailer and salespeople are incentivized handsomely to sell it. CarMax is no different. Most car buyers do not ever get their money's worth from such plans. Beware! read more

Very friendly but not an honest review like they claim. The average car dealer offered $8k more for my car (2018 Cadillac XTS loaded with 2700 miles). Carmax wasn't even in the range of the trade in value from the Kelly Blue Book & Black Book. I expected them to be in that range. Which is about 35% off the MSRP & is appropriate. Don't believe the hype. You'll do better at a regular dealer - definitely will by selling it on your own. I won't be dealing with them in the future & will encourage others to do the same. read more

This is not my first rodeo with CarMax, but it will be my last after this terrible experience. I've purchased a car in the past, referred quite a few people here, but after this last experience, I will not being a returning customer. I give two stars because I was able to get finally get my car, and that went smooth. We found the car we loved online, however we would need it transferred. We completed all the paperwork online and had someone on the phone the next day to complete the transaction. My husband spent over hour on the phone completing everything and providing our payment for transfer, we even got a confirmation number and everything. However, we noticed throughout the day the car was still marked available online and the funds never left the account. We called the next day only to discover our order somehow NEVER made it in. Luckily the car was still available, but we had to through the whole hour thing again to repeat all the steps the previous day. It was ordered and transferred. We called 10 days later just to see the status of the car, and they said it was on the lot but not ready yet. So we went to the Carmax to inquire and they said it would be ready Monday and to come sign. WE showed up Monday, and it wasn't ready, we were told to come back Tuesday. We called Tuesday afternoon and they said the car was not considered "Sellable" due to some repairs....that's odd. How do you sell a car online but it's not sellable? So then we had to wait for repairs. They said it would be ready the next day...low and behold it was not. Thursday, I get a text from the Salesman that it won't be ready til Friday, however I also get a text from Carmax saying the car is ready. When we call Carmax it says it's ready, the salesman tells me it is not. Why are these two contradicting things from the same place? Nonetheless, we show up to Carmax, and are able to get our car....finally. There were still repairs that needed fixing on it, so we were only able to get our car for a few days...only to send it back. I can't wait to get my actual car back. But this whole ordeal was supposed to be smooth, easy, and seamless, and they made it a terrible experience. read more

Currently sitting at an empty desk after four hours of waiting. We got here at 10am and apparently is takes 4 hours to test drive and purchase one car on a day we are told is "very slow." There are half a dozen other customers here. More workers than things to do. We tried to add a cosigner to a car, filled out all the information, jumped through hoops trying to get the proper copies of payment stubs and paid bills. Only to be told that the annual income would be changed to an inaccurate number and make no difference in the downpayment. I work for tips and make around $45,000 a year. I have personally bought a car from a different Carmax location without any issue. Before going to huge pain the ass of getting paystubs, I explained that my $100 paychecks in no way reflected me income. I was continually assured that it would not make a difference. The income was change to $4000 a year, which is ridiculous. We then had our downpayment changed from $1,500 to $2,700. Waited 30 minutes for our references to be logged and now back to waiting on god knows what. I will not say any names of who helped us, but avoid this carmax at all cost. I walked in to be immediately greeted by Art. I told him I wanted to get an appraisal for my car. We walked to the car and took a look around. He asked for the keys and lead me into an office where he asked a few questions while filling out some forms. The whole appraisal process took less than 30 minutes. I got my print out appraisal and they were offering about $4k below KBB. I was impressed by the cleanliness and organization. this place is so simple and stress-free! i absolutely enjoyed my experience here. while browsing the vehicles, i was unable to find a car i truely loved. however, that did not stop my consultant from helping me. he quickly put my specifications into his computer and found a car i instantly fell in love with. the car was located in a city 3 hours away, but arrived on the lot in 2 days. it was amazing. when i checked out the car, i noticed a fog light was not working. but i had it replaced, with a BRAND NEW one, for FREE. also about 2 weeks after driving off the lot, i noticed a small speaker wasnt working. the helpful service techs ordered a brand new one and fixed it for FREE within 2 days. the employees are all extremely helpful and kind. they are NEVER pushy, and extremely understanding. i now recommend carmax to everyone looking, or even thinking about looking, for a new (to you) car. do me a favor, go to a typical dealership, listen to them push and push you, then spend 30 minutes trying to keep you from leaving. once you break free, go straight to carmax.. and relax! read more
