Positive is that Ivan took very good care of us and provided exceptional customer service as we were purchasing our car. He made the time go by fast with good conversation and laughs. Ask for him and he will definitely take care of you. The issue I had was during the appraisal because I was presented with a value which was $2,000 less than the online value. This was primarily due to a very small dent in the inside door jam because of the seat belt buckle got caught when I closed the door. The appraiser noted that it was structural damage?!!? Ivan even admitted that the car was pristine otherwise and even suggested that selling it to a private seller might be better. No budging on the value of the appraisal or the price. I sold a car here at Carmax once, and I recently purchased a car here as well. They have a good selection of cars here. I basically was looking online in their website for different cars and it's feasibility. I happened to find one that I was interested in, and everything was done online. The car shipment from another location, the shipping cost, and all its information was at your fingertips. Not bad! I know this technology is everywhere nowadays... Just wanted to give them some kudos. I must admit it that their business logistics is outstanding. Basically everything was smooth sailing. The signing of new ownership agreement, financing agreement, the logistics of the car, etc., can all be done online. My sales representative was professional. He was very logical in the business aspects to ensure a smooth flow during my purchase. He wasn't too experienced in the technology part of cars. I understand, because Carmax sells most manufacturer name brands, so I can't expect him to be an expert in every aspect, nor answer all technical questions of every car. At the end of the day, I drove home my pre-owned car. However, there were a lot of scratches on my paint. The profile of my vehicle before the purchase only showed a fraction amount of scratches. I understand it is a used vehicle, but was a bit disappointed to see so many scratches that was pretty well hidden. It seems like after the recent rainstorm, all the detailed hidden scratches appeared. Even my interior was scratched at different areas. Anyhow, I wish they would disclose more issues beforehand. And I wish they would have done a better job detailing and touching up the car. But I was happy with the lower mileage in the car. And also happy to find interior I was looking for. Hard to rate because the experience in purchasing a car for my son was awesome. But 6 months in we're buying an alternator. A 2019 Honda HRV with 60k+ miles on its 3rd alternator! Sales Manager suggested we trade it in and buy another car (really?). And service guy had no car history facts before the car made it to carmax. Neither seemed to care but no surprise there. Anyway, over $1k for Honda alternator plus labor 6 mos in a fairly new car which should still be on its first. The current alternator is an aftermarket brand made in china. Needless to say, we feel duped and don't trust buying from there anymore. What started as an awesome experience turned into a nightmare. This was the second car I've sold through CarMax and this time was exactly like the first time- a breeze. I knew my parent's car was worth between $13-$18k and their offer was somewhere in the middle which to me was fair as they handle everything and there is absolutely no haggling involved, which is why I chose not to go the private sale route. Maybe I would have ended up with a little more money but I would have been aggravated to the tenth power so no thanks. Sean was understanding and helpful in the overall experience. Typical bait and switch; don't trust this business. They gave us a ~13k "range" on the vehicle value. Since our car is in perfect shape, I figured we'd get something toward the top. Nope.. when we got the appraisal finalized, they offered us the bottom of the range. I asked what they found wrong with the car, and they had no answer (the appraisal sheet had all green checkmarks), they just said "that's the market value of the car". This was my third car purchase from CarMax, but my first time at the Duarte location -- and overall, it was a very positive experience. The highlight was working with Reggie, my CarMax Consultant. Reggie was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful from start to finish. I first test-drove a car on the lot, and while I liked the model, I wanted a different color. Reggie helped me arrange a vehicle transfer from Gilbert, Arizona, and kept me updated every step of the way. When the car arrived, he even came in on his day off to make sure I was taken care of. That kind of commitment speaks volumes -- I'd absolutely recommend working with him. A few things to know if you're going through the transfer process: just because you pay the transfer fee doesn't mean you're committed to buying the car -- but the fee is non-refundable. And you won't really know what you're getting until it arrives. You can see photos and read the description, but you won't catch every little ding or scratch, and you won't always know if the car comes with OEM floor mats or aftermarket substitutes, or whether things like a cargo mat or privacy shade are included. In my case, they weren't -- and replacing them cost hundreds of dollars. Not a dealbreaker, but definitely something to ask about up front. One other important point: if you're pre-approved through your bank or credit union, that won't sync with CarMax's system. You still need to bring in a physical check for the full purchase amount -- otherwise, you can't take the car home. I've financed with CarMax twice before, and despite having excellent credit (740+ FICO), I received less-than-competitive interest rates both times. I refinanced both cars later. This time, I cut to the chase and went with my credit union from the start -- their rate was far better than CarMax's. As for the vehicle itself -- a low-mileage Acura MDX -- it was in great shape overall. Smelled like new, drove like new, and I'm very happy with it. That said, because CarMax sells every type of vehicle under the sun, their team understandably doesn't have the same in-depth brand knowledge that a dealership would. So don't expect a guided tour of the tech features or how everything works. The MDX has an unusual gear selector (push-button and toggle), no touchscreen, and uses a console pad instead. These are things I didn't fully realize until after I drove it. Again, not a criticism -- just something to be aware of. If you go brand-specific (Acura, Lexus, etc.), you'll get a more tailored delivery. At CarMax, you'll need to ask questions and do a little homework yourself. Also worth noting: when you sell your car to CarMax, if there's a lien, it may take up to two weeks for them to pay it off. I wasn't expecting that -- and it resulted in me making two car payments in the same month. I would've appreciated clearer communication on that front. Still, despite those minor hiccups, I had a great experience at CarMax Duarte. The staff was professional, the process was straightforward, and I'm thrilled with my new car. CarMax has a business model that clearly works -- it's no-pressure, transparent, and much less exhausting than traditional dealerships. Just go in informed. Ask questions. Understand their processes. Isaias the car salesman was extremely rude. Walked in with my little brother to take him to look for his first car. I asked to test drive a Dodge Charger as that is what his heart was set on. He continued to let us know how expensive the car was and how much the insurance would be. Seems to me like he assumed our budget and I never gave him a price point or asked for the negativity. He eventually just said the chargers are probably in the second row and walked straight back to his desk instead of offering us water or coffee or even to take us to the area where the vehicles were. All the process someone mentioned only 25minutes?! Lucky that person as it's not the case with me! I was very surprised, it was a very smooth transaction. I wanted to buy a new car, so naturally, I needed to either sell or trade in my old car. The old car still had a lot of good life on her, so I want to get a little bit more money for her. I was just browsing Carmax website and decided to get a online appraisal, the amount was 20% less than what I could've sold it for, but since I didn't want the hassle of dealing with a private party, and listing the car and showing the car and all of that stuff, I decided to just sell it to Carmax. I brought the car in for a full inspection, and we completed the transaction on the same day. The inspection took about 15 minutes and the paperwork to do the transfer took about 30 minutes all in all the whole thing took 45 minutes which was amazing! Went in recently without an appointment and asked to test drive 2 cars that I had picked out online. Was seen immediately (no wait) and set up for 2 x 10 minute test drives no problem. You just need your driver's license and insurance card to set this up. The test drives are self test drives, the salesman stays behind. Low stress. One of the cars reeked of cigarette smoke, but this kind of thing is why I picked a place that had two of the same car and I test drove both. The salesperson was honest about the cigarette smoke and told me as soon as he pulled up in the vehicle. This was my first time to CarMax. I picked it because of the low pressure, no haggle model. I was not disappointed. The entire process was quite low pressure. I got a tiny bit of pressure about the warranty but other than that it was very smooth. Much better than some brand name dealerships I've been to. The entire process was also very FAST. I ended up buying with a personal check (they just take a peek at your bank account to verify that you have enough funds), and I was out of there in 2.5 hours. There's also a 10 day return policy, and I think it was a 90 day / 4000 mile limited warranty. Random nice touch: if you want, they'll put a giant yellow bow on the car so you can take photos. When you're done, they'll put the bow away. Reddit and some online websites criticize CarMax for being expensive, but I found the prices reasonable. The dealer is even more expensive. Private party would be more work and more risk on my side. I'm not a big fan of the CarMax sticker they put on the bumper. The salesman says they don't remove these on request anymore, but they are easy to scrape off with a fingernail. My goal of having a quick and stress-free car buying experience was achieved. I did online research and thought about things for like 2 weeks, then got everything done stress-free in 2.5 hours. Unless the thing is a total lemon (and will update this review if it is), I am very satisfied and I plan to do any future automobile purchases at CarMax. Thanks CarMax! Bonus tips: - When searching online (both dealer and CarMax), make sure to filter by "within 25 miles". Local prices are more expensive than national prices for me. They're remodeled the interior sales area and plenty of people available - I still would recommend making an appointment since it can get busy depending on day and time. Recently went in to check out a Corvette. Luckily I got a sales person who was very knowledgeable about Vettes and was able to answer all my questions. DO NOT BUY FROM CARMAX DUARTE -- FRAUDULENT, NEGLIGENT, AND COMPLETELY UNACCOUNTABLE I am absolutely disgusted and appalled by my experience with CarMax Duarte, California. I purchased a 2019 Chevy Malibu from them just two months ago, and what has unfolded since then has been nothing short of a legal and consumer rights disaster. On day 12 of ownership, the entire vehicle broke down. The transmission failed completely, the ABS braking system locked up the drive train, and the car was left completely non-drivable and unsafe. I later found out this vehicle had multiple safety and hazard recalls that should have disqualified it from being sold in the first place -- and yet CarMax put it on their lot and sold it to me without full disclosure. I immediately contacted the dealership. It took TWO WEEKS for them to finally arrange pickup of the vehicle, during which time I was stranded without transportation. It has now been OVER TWO MONTHS that my car has been sitting at their lot, untouched. Their excuse? "The mechanic is on vacation." Are you serious? Is this a national chain or a backyard junkyard? They promised me multiple times that they would get me into a replacement vehicle -- promises that have amounted to absolutely nothing. For the past two weeks, I have called every single day, and no one answers. Sales managers either never return calls, offer empty platitudes, or flat-out avoid responsibility. I've now paid two full car payments on a car I do not have access to. This is not only unacceptable -- it is fraudulent, negligent, and possibly illegal. CarMax sold me a defective vehicle with known recalls, failed to honor their repair and replacement process in a timely fashion, and has left me without a vehicle, paying out of pocket, and receiving no customer support. I will be filing a formal complaint with the California DMV, the Bureau of Automotive Repair, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), and the Better Business Bureau. I'm also consulting an attorney regarding a potential lemon law claim and consumer fraud case. CarMax Duarte has been a complete disgrace.
