AVOID THIS CARMAX IN CINCINNATI IF YOU VALUE FAIRNESS & RESPECT I recently attempted to sell my 2021 Kia Soul at this CarMax location in Cincinnati, and it was by far the most insulting, unprofessional experience I've ever had at a dealership. Consider this your warning before you waste your time like I did. First, my initial online appraisal came back at $16,000. I thought that was reasonable, given my car's history. However, after driving over to the dealership and enduring a long wait, I was blindsided by an offer of $9,000 -- a staggering $7,000 drop from the original figure with almost no logical explanation. Let me clarify my car's condition: It's a 2021 Kia Soul, with 68,000 miles total. The engine was replaced at 64,000 miles, meaning the most critical (and expensive) component has only ~4,000 miles on it. The remaining components (transmission, suspension, etc.) have been thoroughly inspected and certified by the dealership that did the engine replacement. I tried to explain this to the salesman assigned to me -- who, frankly, struggled significantly with English. This made the entire process even more frustrating, as I had to repeatedly clarify basic points about the mileage and engine replacement. As if that wasn't enough, the manager, Ryan, who had clearly been eavesdropping on the entire conversation from nearby, abruptly barged in without any introduction. Instead of being helpful, he immediately adopted a rude, dismissive tone, practically demanding to know what my "concern" was. When I pointed out that he should already be aware since he was listening the whole time, he grew even more condescending. Ryan claimed my car was "misrepresented," suggesting I somehow tried to pass it off as a GT line when I put a measly 1 Kia-ordered sticker on the back of the vehicle which can be removed. He then nitpicked two minor dents on the rear and cited "hail damage," conveniently ignoring that it had literally just hailed in Cincinnati as we were pulling into their lot. The implication was that I was attempting to hide issues or deceive them, which was downright insulting. I grabbed my keys mid conversation with Ryan and left. To summarize: Expect your initial appraisal to be slashed dramatically. Don't count on being listened to, much less respected. Prepare for management (like Ryan) to treat you like a fraud, even when you're fully transparent. Also prepare for them to nitpick weather-related damage that literally occurred on-site. My son bought a car and decided to return it within the lab time. The car was accepted for return in good condition and they told him he would receive his money back in two checks one for deposit and one for balance within two weeks. He never received the one for the balance it's thousands of dollars no one in customer relations knows where the money is or when we get the check ! This was a terrible experience. I wanted to get a fair price on my car so I would know whether to trade it in or not. Took it in, and after a test drive they claimed my Jeep had a transmission problem and REALLY low balled the price. I know this was a false claim because it had just come out of the shop and had a computer check that found nothing wrong with the transmission. I didn't argue, just headed for the door. I've been tempted to leave this review over the last few weeks, but was giving them the benefit of the doubt. Here is why I am giving them a 1/5 star review. To start, I came in for a quote back in June. The quote for my car was normal, and I decided to pass. Six months later, I came back in and got an updated quote. Due to the car market being crazy, the quote actually went up (yay!). I was told I had 7 days to come back and accept the quote with no issues. Over the next few days, I located a vehicle and bought it. On the 6th day, I called Carmax to get everything lined up for the sale of my vehicle. They stated that they could no longer buy my vehicle as it was leased. So I started researching, and their home office stated they could buy it. So did the surrounding locations (Lexington, Dayton, Columbus). When I called back this location, they were still consistent with saying no. After lots of back and forth, they finally honored their offer and bought the car. FYI, no apologies as they were wrong the whole time and could buy the car. When I went in, they did the paperwork and said I had nothing to worry about and I was all set. Over the last few weeks, I went on with my life and didn't think about my old car until today. Today, I logged into my old cars account to see the vehicle still had not been paid off. My account is now past due, and Lexus is stating it will go against my credit if Carmax doesn't do their part by the 15th of this month (stressful). When I called this location they said they couldn't help, and that it wasn't in their hands any more. That I have to work with the central office, and refused to help any further. Now I am waiting for next steps as Carmax dropped the ball. Fingers crossed this gets resolved, but sellers beware this was a nightmare and still continues to be! Did the online sell quote and still had to stand around and wait - offered an ok deal, only to have us wait for their mechanic to look at it, then they half the offer after you've invested more time waiting for the write up, then when accepting their offer to still have to wait more time for the "process" for the check. Was told upfront the process was quick and easy - it's a time investment - make sure you have at least 2 hours for the straight cash offer - not sure how long the other processes are but this one for cash offer is 2 hrs. Also expect your in-person offer to be less than your online offer - up to 1/2 off. Hopefully the check doesn't bounce. read more

We've had a TERRIBLE time and will be buying a car literally anywhere else. In the showroom in Cincinnati the guy we spoke with made aggressive vaccine jokes, kept calling us kids even though we're nearly 40, and literally insulted us under his breath when we were giving him insurance information. We asked to drive a second car and he said, "I'd have to get it out" and just stared at us until we gave up and left. We then tried to find one on their site. We have requested for two different vehicles to be shipped to the Cincinnati store for us to purchase. Each time the person who calls us to supposedly set it up fails miserably. The first car- we spoke to a person who said to put it on hold to drive first, then call her to ask the car to be shipped. We did this, and she then told us that the car had been sent on a 24 hr test drive though it was still showing as reserved for us to test.  She said there was no way to be next in line to have it shipped if it returned.   The second car that we asked to have shipped the person calling told us that the car had just been lent out as a loaner car though it was newly up on the site. We asked to have it shipped after it came back from being loaned, he said that he couldn't. Both times it seemed related to us not wanting to fill out the finance information on the phone, as we wanted to drive the car first. We had also discussed outside financing or paying in full, so this shouldn't have mattered. Apparently if you don't finance through them, you aren't able to actually get a car shipped.  The in-person salesperson never even offered shipping one as an option or suggestion when we didn't find what we wanted on site.  If you're spending upwards of 25K, you want the person to care just a little, and it's clear they don't. read more

They called a few hours later to confirm we'd be there. We arrived 10 minutes early. The car was not ready & the poor overworked sales guy had no idea where the car was located until we pointed it out to him after a five minute search through their very crowded lot. But the most disappointing part was the sales guy left us in the lot for 15 minutes saying he had to go find the key. We tracked him inside to let him know we were leaving and had no longer had an interest in a test drive. Overworked during COVID? Very likely End result: we bought a car elsewhere. read more

I am writing this based on my VERY BAD experience at Carmax, from the perspective of someone that was trying to sell/ trade in a car. I admit a bit of negative bias because things didn't work out as I had hoped. I think this place is a well-oiled machine. One that takes advantage of people who are in desperate times and need to quickly liquidate their car because of a tragedy. When I brought my vehicle in, it was on the idea that I could get more from Carmax than from BMW on a trade in. The system they have set up is choreographed to perfection: you sit down, give them your keys, they send out two inspectors that spend X minutes examining the car. Meanwhile, the salesman drones on and tries to interest you in something they have on the lot. Anyway, the offer comes back low. When I decline the offer, the guy tells me they think they found evidence of an accident and a swapped rear door - he asks me if I have knowledge. If I walk away, they will input the notice of damage into the VIN number and the value will drop in X days. Floored, I simply walked out the door. In my opinion, their is a difference between high pressure sales techniques and downright coercion. I'm glad I didn't actually NEED to use their services, but I can imagine how persistent they would be if I showed any interest at all (I got multiple followup calls after leaving). Overall, I will say that they cars on the lot seemed to be a pretty low prices. They also had some sort of extended warranty that you could get with the cars that was unique to Carmax. If you're a buyer, this is probably a completely different story. However, because of how I was treated I won't be back to do either. read more

I've both sold and bought a car from CarMax and I had a really good experience with both. The car I was selling was kind of a junker but they gave me a fair price for it. It wasn't anything to be too excited about but it was fair. In buying a car from here the salesman we dealt with went above and beyond. I must have test driven half a dozen cars, I really didn't know what I wanted. When I finally did find what I wanted it was out of my price range, but the salesman knew of the same type of car available within my price range at their Dayton location. He personally drove the whole way out to Dayton and picked the car up and brought it back. I bought it that night. I also bring my car back here for check ups and oil changes. They offer these services at very reasonable prices and they also seem to be honest about issues with my car. On top of that they are extremely friendly and helpful with everything. I would absolutely recommend CarMax to anyone looking to buy or sell their car. I have had nothing but good experiences with them. read more

Terrible experience, not personable at all. If you don't know what car you want this would be a great place to LOOK at cars. Every car in the lot is unlocked and you can really get a feel for what is roomy and what you may end up liking. This is the best place for a test fit! Most of the cars are overpriced but since they screwed the guy before you it could be a good value. The dealer HAS TO GO on a test drive with you. AND it's very limited to route based or a short highway based route. The lot has very nice cars. Very nice. We tried to sell our car to them (in perfect condition) - with no result. They failed to mention all the necessary documents needed to complete the sale, made us jump through hoops, lied about all of a sudden finding "damage" on the car, reduced their appraisal price for absolutely no reason, and ignored our requests for an explanation. Classic bait and switch. One CarMax employee in particular, Brandyon M., was rude and unprofessional. He literally had no idea what he was doing, and then was dishonest about the mistakes he made. I have had two cars appraised by CarMax and have sold one of them to CarMax. The first car I had appraised last year, and ended up selling it for significantly more on Craigslist. This was a 2007 with 90k miles. The car I just sold to them over the weekend, I had valued by Beechmont Toyota on a trade in and they weren't able to get close to the offer CarMax gave me. This was a 2012 with 16k miles. CarMax seems to really value newer low mileage cars. I made an appointment to have my car appraised on Thursday night. Once I arrived, there was a bit of confusion on who would help me, but once that was figured out the process was very smooth. After I answered the questions, they told me it would take 30-35 minutes to have my car appraised. After about 15 minutes, they were ready with an appraisal. I walked out that night with their offer in hand, good for 7 days. Once I decided I was going to sell my car to CarMax, it was a pretty simple process. I walked in and went back to the cashier's desk with my keys, driver's license, title, registration, and appraisal. They took my documents, I pulled my car around to the service window, they took my plates off for me, and I went back inside to sit down and sign a few papers. I would say the whole process took about 30 minutes. I said goodbye to my car, and walked out with the bank draft. Definitely the easiest car selling experience I have ever had. read more

Carmax is a rip off and the sales department lies. I bought 2017 Hyundai Sonata and it been possibly wrecked the touch up paint applied looks like a little kid tried to cover up the scratches. I asked sales consultant to have the body shop fix it before I bought it. I asked for it to be buffed out and cleaned. The passenger side rear has been wrecked and Carmax did a bad job trying to cover up the scratches and damage. The other paint Mark's looks like someone used paint from a hobby lobby to cover up paint scratches. I had asked the salesman about it and he said it was just marks from the rain. If they lied about simple paint fixes they will lie about anything. My had fiancee worked there and talked about the quality of the cars. I guess things have changed since left her job. Carmax is just a used car supermarket that does not care about the consumer. I will never buy from them again. read more

First of all, I want you to know that I'd give the Lexington KY Carmax a 5-star rating for ease of business, cleanliness, an improved way to purchase cars, followup after the sale & use of warranty for a repair that was needed about 3 months after my purchase. And I have been a Sales Manager & Finance Manager at competing dealerships since 1993. So, I have to admit that CarMax as a whole offers a unique shopping experience that was very pleasing. Now for the bad part, that really concerns me! To give you the full back story, I purchased my 2008 Jeep Wrangler from the Lexington KY CarMax for almost $2800 below (yes below) NADA trade value... maybe because it had some small dents & dings. So, fast forward 2 years & 2 days after my purchase from CarMax, I was ready to trade my Jeep for a new 2014 Wrangler. I might've even considered buying a preowned 2013 Wrangler, which I mentioned to the Cincinnati CarMax manager & salesperson. But it would all come down to how much CarMax or another dealer would offer for my 2008 Wrangler. The word throughout the auto industry is that CarMax seems to offer very generous trade appraisals. And since I'm a manager at an area dealership, I knew my current "Clean NADA trade value" was exactly $18225 after the exact equipment & mileage adds/deducts. And my Jeep had a perfect CarFax with no accidents. My Used Car Manager had already offered me $17500, because he was going to spend another $400 on a used car imspection, oil change, tire rotation, new wiper blades, and thorough cleanup. However, after waiting 45 minutes for the Cincinnati CarMax offer... they lowballed me with a super low $15000! Wait... What??? Seriously??! I mean WTF??? But I kept my composure & simply walked out & let it all sink in for a few minutes. I asked myself what just happened & then it hit me like a ton of bricks!!! They knew I only paid $18300 for it 2 years ago, so they simply tried to steal it back. But just to make sure, I went back inside & asked the Sales Manager if my previous purchase price had anything to do with the extremely low offer. I also showed him the NADA trade values & told him that I was appalled at the low offer... and just wanted to know the real story. ...and he told me that the fact that I'd only given a little more than $18300 for it 2 years before & that I had filed a claim against my CarMax MaxCare warranty brought my value down to only $15000. It took everything I had to bite my tongue & walk out. America... this is just plain wrong!! Filing a warranty claim and/or what you previously paid for a car (or house, boat, etc) should never EVER affect a company's appraisal of your property! Companies like CarMax deserve to lose customers when they try to take advantage of customers by lowballing them based upon previous purchase prives or current payoff values. That's extremely sleazy & so 1970's. So I learned that CarMax is just another wolf in sheep's clothing. You might "Start Here"... but you might not do it a 2nd time. But there was a happy ending... at one of my sister stores, as I manage at one of 33 franchise locations, I ended up getting another $500 trade (for an $18000 total). And I'm now the proud new owner of an awesome new 2014 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon... that I might've purchased from CarMax's Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep dealership in Georgia instead. And to resummerize... they should always offer appraisals based upon current book, auction & marketplace values... without ever considering what you previously paid or currently owe!! I would not buy again form Carmax. Sales person ran credit 25 times, pressured me into a car I did not want. Promise me it would be here next day. It was not, would have taken a week. Added money to deal I did not have. Not a 7 day get your car back they put it on a truck and ship out same day so if you change your mind you walk home because your old car is gone. Drove my car home, and the service engine light came on two days after my purchase. I drove it back to carmax within my 7 days and could not get in until after these days passed. I purchased a 2010 Honda Accord coupe with low miles for $12,998. I owned this car for less than 90 days, and CarMax had my vehicle for 23 of those days doing 3 simple warranty repairs (paint touch up, wheel baring replacement and replace the subwoofer). They said it was finished, I would pick it up only to find nothing was done. This happened 3 times. They even gave me my car back with a completely flat tire and broke the other wheel baring. They told me they test drove it "right before" I got there and it was driving fine... funny considering there was 12 pounds of air pressure in the tire. Took my car to Superior Honda and they said my car was only worth $5000 which was very upsetting. Decided to just buy a new Honda so I wouldn't have to deal with this again. Took my car back to CarMax, and they said the KBB value of my car was $4,700, but CarMax would give me $10,000 for it (that's a red flag right there). I took the almost $3000 hit because I was tired of being lied too over and over, and I knew the car would have constant issues moving forward. The entire under body of my car was rusted out, and I peeled back the carpet on the floor board only to find orange colored dirt all over the floor (which makes me think this was a flood car). Also, several of CarMax's lenders charge a daily finance rate. My car payment was $341, and only $17 went to the principal. The lender told me anything additional I pay on top of my car payment would go towards the principal. That was a lie, they only lowered my next months payment by the amount I over paid. Buying a car from CarMax was an absolute nightmare. They prey on people with bad credit. Buyers beware, if you buy a car here, you will pay several thousand over KBB value and will be several thousand upside down before you leave the lot. Charles in service is absolutely horrible and will lie right to your face. Worst service department I have ever dealt with!! CarMax had a used 2016 Honda Accord Coupe EXL for $29,000. I purchased a brand new 2017 Accord Coupe EXL V6 with a 6 speed manual (very rare) for $26,000. Not sure why a used car is $3000 more than a brand new one...... read more

Anne would be correct. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! They bought out my Kia Stinger lease. I didn't need the car anymore, and instead of buying out my lease myself and selling it for a profit (did extensive research and found that I would make 8k-12k), They bought it outright and spoke to KIA, in front of me, and told me--to my face--that I would never owe another dime to Kia Motors Finance. They straight up lied to my face. And 2.5 MONTHS LATER, they inform me that there was 8k that I owe on the car.. that the fine print stated that I need to cover any unknowns. So now I am 8k in the hole as opposed to around 10k in the positive, all out convenience. Avoid these soulless scumbags. read more

First, I would like to say that Jim at the Cincinnati location was outstanding on the phone and in person when getting the appraisal on my BMW. My issue is with the appraisal and the manager that was on duty. (White shirt very thin) the appraisal came in $2500 lower than Carvana which I understand business is business but during my 45 mins in the store I observed 3 others walk out with a disappointed offer. In the time I was in the showroom I passed this manager 3 different times during arrival, during the waiting period, and on departure. Had a schedule last weekend to test drive a Hyundai Veloster 2014 VIN KMHTC6AE7EU189999. Car was clean and looked good. But on the test drive there was a bad vibration in the front end so much so I had to slow down and on 275 and go 55 mph. Car is $2500 over priced and with the mechanical problems it's 3500 over priced. The sales guy said he would get it fix , but can't lower the sticker price. I should have done my homework on CarMax.
