I never thought I would buy one of these. On vacation, I kept passing the store, and finally I went in and came out wearing a hat. Love It,

On a lark I decided to go full island and buy myself a Panama hat. It kinda sets you apart, even here in Hawaii. You can wear these with a snazzy business or leisure suit, or island shirt and shorts, clubbing or shopping it looks great either way. I was fortunate enough to wander into this lovely little store full of nothing but... Panama hats! Plus some feathers, a few handbags and accessories, but mostly hats, hats, and more hats. Plus a couple lovely and personable assistants, Amy and Ray, both knowledgeable and helpful suggesting which ones looked good on me, and the subtle differences between one style and another. Who knew there were so many different styles of Panama hat? The store is arranged horizontally kind of like a fancy bar is vertically. Nothing is inexpensive here, the hundreds of hats on display start at about $200 near the entrance and reach $600 to $900 by the back of the store. They're all handmade in the same way, but the more expensive ones have a tighter and more even weave, more intricate weave patterns and designs, maybe a more refined shape. Plus there's a small glass case with the Louis Tres and Hennessy Paradis of hats, like the alcohol those hats are $1,000 and up. Unlike those big luxury brands these are the real deal, all handmade in Ecuador (where Panama hats are made) by a network of artisan craftspeople, seemingly related to a small company named Truffaux that has similar shops in Australia. You're in luxury territory the moment you step in but they don't cater to the ultra high end collector and antique hats that can go for many thousands of dollars. So it's hats for millionaires not billionaires, or just people who want a hat they can treasure. I splurged for a Montecristo hat, one of the nicest, and it makes me feel like a million to wear it and read up on all about the history, lore, and origin of these hats. read more

When you think of "Class" you must think of this store. Every representative knows their stuff. Amazing service. Quality is so awesome to review. We purchased two of our awesome Panama hats 4 years ago and have worn them around the world. My hat got a little imbalanced after circling the globe so we brought it back in to ask what could be done. Ray took the hat and reformed it to exactly the new condition. Charged NOTHING!!! Ray said it was part of their service! That made the value of what we paid triple. The selection is great and chatting with Ray or Amy makes one realize how cool hat wearing is! I'm a long time customer, with a total of 11 Truffaux hats, as well as several others. The quality of the hats is outstanding, with a price range for probably just about everybody. I have Truffaux hats that cost under $100, and one that retails for north of $500. Yoshiko bought the business a couple of years ago, and she's done wonders. The service level is outstanding. She and Ray both know how to treat customers so that they want to come back. On my last trip, I went in for a new hat band and feather, which she took care of with no issues at all. I left it there in the afternoon, and picked it up later that night. I left with 2 new hats this last trip, and I couldn't be happier with them. Classic styling, with just a bit of attitude. Cool hats, great location, excellent service, fair pricing. Pretty much makes it perfect in my book! read more

Truffeaux always gets me into trouble when I visit Ohau. I may look great when I walk out but always in trouble. Why? Well it's because I now have a pretty decent collection of Truffeaux hats but they take up valuable wardrobe space which apparently should be reserved for my wife's shoes (mainly the Jimmy Choo variety). This is despite the fact that there is "shoe creep" invading my side of the walk-in wardrobe. The owners of Truffeaux are Aussies (and us Aussies know the importance of hat wear in our sun burnt country), so hats are an essential part of the wardrobe but in this fashion conscious age they need to look the part as well. Truffeaux melds classic and contemporary styles with practicality so if you need a handsome beach hat or one to wear while jamming on stage you're going to find it here. I love the Lewers Street store (the original Ohau store) and for the past three years love visiting Ray (now at the New Ala Moana location) and Taka. These guys will go out of the way to help you choose the perfect hat for the perfect occasion and not make you look like a goose. And it's not just hats for men - there are some damn fine looking women's formal and casual hats as elegant as my wife who has purchased her second Truffeaux. Looks as if I'm going to be evicted from that walking robe when I get back to Sydney! I went in with my girlfriend to look at hats for a late present. We were greeted by a nice young man who was very friendly and helpful. He was kind of helping another couple so he was making sure both of us were doing well. The other salesman, Taka, finished with his customers and came to help us. He was super friendly and made some great suggestions on style and size because I'm going to be shaving my head for a fundraiser at the end of the month (St Baldrick's). He told me if either of the hats don't fit after cutting my muppet hair off to come back and they'll steam them to fit better and I can keep coming back as my hair grows out so my hats always fit. He even recommended a great place to eat across the street. Awesome place, going the extra inch (for anybody has Disney training) Make sure to check in on yelp for a deal!!! read more

My review is two part: 1 - The store experience: The hats are very well made, and the store has a nice, warm ambiance. 2 - The people: When I've visited the store in the past, the employees have been very friendly. However, I had a more aggressive experience during Halloween evening. Truffaux had a lovely car/photo "booth" and photographers set up across their store. The experience and photo-taking experience were free. To take the photo, apparently (and understandably) you needed (or strongly urged) to wear one of their hats. I spent over 20 minutes putting on and securing my wig, so once I found out about the need to wear a hat, I told the photographer/staff person ushering the people in line that I no longer wanted to take a picture, and I did not want to wear a hat, the man put a hat on me. I tried to take it off, and he put it on me again, then pushed it down on my head. I took it off a SECOND time and told him I did not want to take a photo. He then asked his colleague which hat I should wear and as his other colleague was selecting a hat, I told him I did not want to wear a hat and stepped out of the line. The second staff member proceeded to select a hat and walked over to me and placed it on my head and pushed down on it while the first stayed behind me. Not only was I upset, but my friend was upset and she also said aloud, " she does NOT want a hat!" So while the hats are of good quality, I'd suggest you think twice about Truffaux -- If respect for your decision, your body, and your boundaries is important to you. read more

Dropped in a few weeks ago after a friend had referred me to the store. Truffaux was a smaller shop than i had expected, but the ambience of the room was warm and comfortable and despite the lack of square footage, there was enough product visible on the shelves that I knew I'd find something I liked. I was immediately greeted by the salesperson, who was friendly, very helpful and had no problem searching for the correct size for my skull. I had picked out 3 different styles of hat and must have gone through 9 or 11 pieces in all before I decided on one. As all of the Truffaux line are individually handwoven, some of the sizes are not exact and the materials can expand and contract given humidity, sweat, etc. She then set the hat on a steamer of some sort and placed it on my noggin to more customize its shape to the brainpan. We made the transaction and she sent me on my way. This was impressive enough that I took along a few business cards and postcards to refer to friends and customers of mine. All in all, a haberdashery worthy of the title. Thanks, Truffaux! read more

Truffaux makes nice hats. Go into the store and buy one. Do not however try to order one on line. They have no idea about customer service over the web. I had visited the store during a trip, was measured but decided to order later and have it shipped. The hat was literally stuffed into a flimsy box, too small for the hat. It arrived badly damaged. Sent it back and they sent another one. It came in a better box, but the packaging of the hat was nothing like they show on the website. It wasn't damaged, but it was not blocked properly. I was ready to give up and just send it back for the promised guaranteed satisfaction refund. But they said no. The refund period of 30 days had expired. They counted 30 days from the original order date, not the date of the returned hat. The customer service was so slow that there was no way that could have been done in 30 days. Their attitude on the phone was bad, they claimed the hat was blocked OK. I had it in front of me and it was obvious it wasn't even. They didn't care they had a dissatisfied customer. I had to have someone locally fix it at my expense. read more
