I had a routine but thorough check of my in-floor hydronic heat system, not because I was having problems, but because I wanted to see if any maintenance was needed at 17 years. After a shocking opinion from Greenwood Heating that I'd need a complete replacement of my boiler system (to cost over $20,000), I carefully read websites and reviews of several companies and decided to call Carlson Mechanical as specialists in hydronic heat. Of course, I wasn't eager to spend $400 for another evaluation, but a second opinion was essential. (The charges for this visit were clearly explained in an email ahead of time.) Matt showed up on time. I did not tell him that Carlson was the second company to check the system. He was thorough, polite, and clear with explanations, even anticipating questions that I probably should have been thinking of. He concluded that my system was just fine, no work needed. He told me what to look out for as indicators of potential problems, but said that I probably wouldn't even need another maintenance check for 3 to 5 years. What a relief! Our tank water heater died for our house hot water and infloor heating hot water. Big expense! We knew this day was coming soon. Owner Mark gave 3 written estimates for different options. We decided to go with tankless with mini boiler combo. These guys did the best job! It took a full week of work, 8 hours a day to get a whole new heating system and all the new pipes, valves, etc put in and they did a fabulous job. Very professional. Friendly. Helpful. Knowledgeable. Our new system is humming along and working just as promised. Look, these guys clearly know what they are doing and you will get quality. Likely they are not the cheapest option however why go cheapest with such a large and important home investment. Originally scheduled for Tuesday ( 12/26/23 ) to do a boiler PM, Amy called to tell me that Dennis had been re-directed to a no-heat situation, elsewhere. I understood, and thanked her for calling. Fast forward a week later, and knowing that not too many contractors will even work on radiant heat hot wat water boilers, was just happy that Dennis showed up. Not only did he work swiftly to troubleshoot why my boiler would not stay running, but explained each step of his findings as he worked. He got it up and running after finding a water valve had been shut for some reason. Like cold showers? Then you'll love Carlson. I have a VERY expensive German heater and boiler (which they installed), and they have absolutely no idea how to service it. I have spent thousands of dollars on them only to have repair guys try and charge me hourly while they try to download manuals on their phones and watch "do-it-yourself" videos on YouTube. I also want to add that this is not some one-time offense that has thrown me into a fit. Rather, it's been a slow-motion train wreck that has played out over the last 18 months. Anyhow, make sure that anything you buy is sold from someone who is also capable of servicing what they sell you. I also strongly recommend getting a fixed-quote before letting anyone work on your system. read more

They did multiple repairs to my radiant heating system such as replacing two water temperature sensors that had gone bad and were giving inconsistent readings. When other companies have come out to service this system, they've spent quite a bit of time just trying to figure out how it works. Carlson did all of the repairs in only 45 minutes start to finish. 5 stars is an understatement! Our first contact with Carlson was in January 2015, we were debating between radiant heat and a heat pump. The other Mechanical company did not return 2 phone calls, Mark returned our call, came out discussed pros and cons of radiant heat and sent us a proposal. No pressure or hard sell, just an honest discussion and an estimate. It took us several months to choose radiant heat, when I called back in April the estimate was still good and we were scheduled. That was the best decision we made! We love our water heater and radiant heat, it is so quiet and comfortable. The Carlson team was punctual, communicated what was going to be done daily, when to expect them and they always left the work area clean. We just had the pleasure of working with Carlson Mechanical again, even during their busy season service was still top notch! We had to break up the concrete in our basement as part of a remodel so of course knowing how much we love our radiators upstairs we wanted to install in floor radiant heat in our basement. I can't say enough about the job that James and Arik did at our home. We had a gas meter installed at our home, and initially talked to Mark about converting a number of appliances to gas. Mark came up with a great plan, and we broke the project into a couple of phases. Phase 1, our brand new on demand hot water system went in seamlessly. James and Arik were amazing! With 4 people in the house, it is so nice to not run out of hot water, and it is nice knowing that we aren't heating water when we are not home. Really bad service. I called them and described my issue. When they came to my house they said yes, I had the problem that I described. But they didn't budget enough time to repair it, so they would need to come back. On the day that they were scheduled to return, they canceled the appointment because they decided that they needed a specific part for my repair, so they wanted to order it. (They hadn't ordered the part prior to that, despite scheduling the return trip three weeks earlier). After weeks of silence I called and asked for an update, and the scheduled the return trip (clearly, they wouldn't have scheduled it if I hadn't called). When they returned for the repair, they charged me for a second $228 "service call" even though they were at my house earlier to look at the problem and leave. And they didn't use the special part that they had delayed my repair to order. Mark, the owner, was a real disappointment. There are plenty of reliable, customer-focused service professionals who do this work. I will never use Carlson Mechanical again, and you shouldn't either. read more
