Well, if you haven't, you can correct that deficiency at McClellan Palomar Airport. It's just a few miles from downtown Carlsbad and offers a fantastic alternative to busy San Diego International Airport, if you're headed out this way. It's newly remodeled and services a mix of private jets, charters, and a handful of commercial flights. United Airlines flies to/from San Francisco and Denver and American Airlines flies to/from Phoenix. I dropped off my son and daughter-in-law yesterday for their flight home to San Francisco, and the experience of driving into the airport and terminal was a lot easier than what I've run into at a few shopping malls. We have quite a few relatives around Carlsbad and the North Country, and I can't wait to fly into this friendly low-stress airport on our next visit.

I taxied onto the ramp ad there was no ramp agent to guide me where to park. After 3 minutes or so, I chose to park in one of the available spots and shut down the engine, then a lady came out of the terminal and was busy talking to someone on her walkie talkie and without any welcoming gesture or eye contact, she placed the chocks on my plane and walked away without talking to me or addressing me. Then this ramp agent comes to me a minute after the lady left and he told me that I need to move the plane. I asked him why did the lady put the chocks on if you need me to move the airplane, he said there is a miscommunication. Then after 3 minutes standing in the beaming sun, he tells me that I need to move it to Atlantic west 1 ramp, so I asked him where it is, he said that he will find out. Then he showed me where I need to taxi it to. After I secured the plane, he welcomed me to Carlsbad and he was being friendly. Once I walked into the terminal, a young lady at the front desk gave me a sharp look and asked me if I have a card for payment - no welcoming attitude whatsoever. I told her that I would like to know what are the charges, so she responded in a robotic way that there is a facility fees and security fees, she never mentioned anything about the parking reg. hourly fees. She did mention that if I buy a minimum of 11 gallons they will waive the facility fees, so I went with it. After I came back in one hour, the same young lady slammed me with a total of $148.65 just to park for 1 hour. She never mentioned that the gas price is $10/Gallon and she never mentioned there is a parking reg. Hourly fees. I have been flying for 26 years and used a lot of FBO's across the country, I never had such bad experience with any of them including Atlantic. But I know one thing for sure, after this experience I will recommend all the pilots I know not to go to any Atlantic again. There was no need for all this attitude and the excessive charges that reflects on poor management and misinforming the customer of the true cost of parking there.

Not only was it a way to drastically cut our expenses (domestic flights from within Mexico are obviously way cheaper than international flights from LA), but it was such a calm, streamlined, easy operation. We got to the parking lot early for our 7am flight out of Tijuana, walked to the check in terminal & that's where we encountered our one and only 'hiccup.' Because we had 3 children with us, the Viva desk check-in said we needed to speak to a representative but we were told the only one on duty at that time was in the restroom. Luckily the stand alone kiosk on the other side of the area worked out fine. All of this was more of a Viva issue than a CBX one. We breezed through the bridge over the boarder & customs took no time at all. It was one of the quickest customs experiences I've ever had. We got dumped out right at the bag check area & were on for our trip. Coming home was just as easy. We got our bags and followed the well marked signs to CBX to walk over the boarder & do customs. Customs took a tad bit longer than going to Mexico, but that's more of a US thing than CBX. We still got through in was less time than expected, even when arriving on a Friday afternoon before a holiday weekend when I would normally expect huge crowds of people trying to get in to the country. In all, we saved hundreds of dollars even after paying for CBX & parking on location. We will always be using them from here on out for any family trips to Mexico.

We were quoted a price in advance for a short, 10-minute shuttle ride -- already steep, but we were on our way to a very important family event, so I didn't push back. When we arrived, the driver arbitrarily added 20% to the price, claiming it was "because of all our bags." This was never mentioned up front. He waited until we were unloading to spring the surprise charge on us -- a classic bait and switch. And then, as if that wasn't enough, he had the audacity to ask for a tip. I was with my family and didn't want to make a scene, so I paid. But I left feeling completely taken advantage of. Rarely have I felt so blatantly fleeced. This was not just unprofessional -- it was opportunistic and shady. I have lived here many years but only taken the Coaster a handful of times…read more I was going down to Petco park for a Padres game and decided to give it a try. It is about an hour from Oceanside to the San Diego Santa Fe depot (about 20 minutes more than driving by car at 1030 am). There was an option for a day pass for $15 to take the Coaster down and back, but also to be able to use the Trolley as well. That was a good deal. Avoid a ticket and tap your Pronto card everytime you get on to a train or trolley. You get down to the Santa Fe Depot and you walk over to the trolley line and take the green or blue, green has less stops and it only takes like 10-14 minutes. The conductors do come by to check your tickets, so just make sure you tap your Pronto card everytime you get on to a train or trolley. I was able to leave the game with 2 outs to go and run to the trolley which was running late, and at about 407 got us over to the Santa Fe depot at 418 and we had to run to the Coaster that was leaving at 420 but we made it, even when I stopped to tap my pronto card. They are always prompt and available whatever the adventure might be. I know there is Uber, Lyft, and taxi service but you never know what you are going to get. My…read morefirst time stopping over in San Diego and had a great experience as it's a lovely place with lots of options to do so as they have lots of options to shop and dine here though not much seating besides at the gates and food court. There are signs to help you navigate though I guess as a first timer it did little to help me find my way especially for lounges as I walked right by one and didn't even see it is my ignorance as well but it's quite a busy airport but of course timing always helps as well I don't have much negativity to say other than Alaska/Hawaiian not having a lounge here do understand it is a planned project that hopefully will happen soon to make the transition comforting.
