I usually stop here when I drive down to San Diego to visit my daughter. I pass by this rest area from time to time. This rest area has a lot of potential to be really wonderful, with its amenities, a nice park like atmosphere, and an ocean view. Outside, there is a place where you can buy drinks, and there is also plenty of parking. Inside, it is quite clean for a public restroom facility. Whether you are being screamed at, "Are we there yet?!" by young children, need to use the rest room/stretch your legs or are hungry for a snack: your saving grace when on the road are rest stops. Although these are more abundant in other parts of the country than the state of California; some of these roadside angels pop up here and there. The distance between Los Angeles and San Diego may not be exorbitantly long but I am in the, "I drink a lot of water" - camp and needed to use the rest room plus walk around. I was getting quite cranky and testing my boyfriend's patience but luckily the Aliso Creek Rest Area came to the rescue. The Aliso Creek Rest Area sits on the southbound side of the I-5 freeway near Oceanside/Aliso Viejo and welcomes road warriors with a large parking lot, grassy knolls, several bathroom buildings (I mean 'severa'l!) and concession snack outposts. But this isn't your typical rest stop, folks. This place is nnnniiicccee! The Aliso Creek Rest Area is shockingly clean: this isn't a rest stop out of a horror movie and instead delights bycombining nature with architecture. Trees, brights flowers/vines and plants are found plenty at the Aliso Creek Rest Area with a soundtrack of Starling birds singing/chirping their impressive vocal ranges bringing peace and serenity to your drive. What looks like hundreds of ground squirrels roam free with no fear of humans and happily accept food out of your hands (I fed one ground squirrel plenty of almonds which he/she happily shoved inside cheeks) and some parking sea gulls also try try their luck at snagging lunch. The Aliso Creek Rest Area is rejuvenating to the soul.  I have a weird fear of public bathrooms/toilets (well, toilets in general but this is not a therapy session) and the beautiful Spanish architectural style buildings at the Aliso Creek Rest Area are straight out of Architecture Digest while the bathrooms are clean and well stocked. I generally hate public bathrooms and expected roadside restrooms to be terrifying but these weren't bad at all! Trust me if I approve - it means something!  Looking for a snack or to feed those squirrels? The Aliso Creek Rest Area features several vending machines with dry snacks (chips, nuts, cookies, candy/chocolate), a sandwich machine (not sure if I trust that, though) and of course beverage machines with water, soda, Gatorade and coconut water; accepting both cash and card. My only complaint is that these machines need some healthier options and gluten free snacks for us Celiac folks. The closest thing were almonds and granola bars and it would be nice to have other options but I suppose I am expecting too much from a rest stop. The Aliso Creek Rest Area is a clean and inviting rest stop offering bathrooms, snacks and a nature respite to refresh and get you back on the road while in between Los Angeles and San Diego. Stopped here on my way to San Diego. Walking into the women's restroom it looked clean. However, when I pushed open one of the doors there was human fences everywhere covering the seat and the back of the wall. Lost my appetite and pressed on down the line. Found one that was semi serviceable and after releasing myself came to find there was no toilet paper; I had to make do with the toilet seat covers. I then went to check the vending machines out. 4 dollars for a pack of sour skittles. RIP. Also, no ice cream vending machine?! Absurd. This place has scarred me for life. Never again. read more

This stop is always a go to when driving by. Not much of a wait to use restroom. The doggie area was far enough away from people so they can do their business and not get distracted. Plenty of trash cans so don't litter. They do have a few vending machines. Snacks and or drinks.Options are limited but at least they have options. read more

Between Los Angeles and San Diego there are not lot of rest stops, so appreciate this spot before heading into San Diego. This rest stop overs a large separate parking lot for trucks and cars but can get full during peak times, especially holidays. This stop also offers two sets of bathrooms that are normally clean but this past Friday they were a mess in the afternoon. Toilet paper and seat covers were lining the toilets. What a mess. Was surprised to see the mess despite being day time and cleaning crew onsite. In the positive side, after my visit it looked like the cleaning crew was going in to tidy up. read more

This is a well-maintained rest stop along the I-5 Southbound towards San Diego. I pulled over to wait out traffic on a recent trip down - a great spot to kill time instead of doing it sitting in your car, wasting gas at a standstill. It has all the amenities you'd need at a rest stop - clean, well ventilated restrooms, multiple vending machines offering everything from candy/light snacks, to sandwiches, to water/soda/juice/bottled coffee. There's also a hot coffee machine as well - but tbh, I'm not adventurous enough to try that out. The grounds are vast - plenty of room to walk around/stretch/spread out. If you're a Pokemon GO player - there are two gyms here, and a few more stops as well. I spotted a functional "old-school" payphone - which was pretty awesome - a blast from the past! During the day, the wildlife in the area are squirrels - but be aware - at nighttime, rattlesnakes are out in full swing - there's even a posted sign warning about their presence. While you are fairly inland - adjacent to the 5 freeway - the other side of the rest area offers a view of the Pacific Ocean. read more

Aliso Creek Rest Stop, you saved my life. Stuck in traffic for what felt like 47 years and 3 days... and I was two minutes away from a full bladder meltdown. Out of nowhere, this glorious oasis appears in the middle of nowhere. Plenty of restrooms, relatively clean, running water... Did I still use the hover method? Absolutely. It's one of the few if not the only rest stop between Orange county and the developed part of San Diego county. Camp Pendleton and the nuclear power plant are the only things around and most are not free for civilians to enter for obvious reasons. Bathroom is pretty well maintained. As far as mornings with bumper-to-bumper traffic goes, you couldn't find a more scenic spot to take a quick break. I also needed to drain the radiator, so... Since it was a holiday weekend, even rest areas have difficulty with the flow of vehicles with limited parking spaces. It took around 5 minutes for the line of cars in front of us to get their spots. The P-line wasn't too long, but the floors were so wet that I was slipping and sliding trying to get out. Outside there were a couple of vendors selling snacks like chips and ice cream as well as a collection of jewelry such as bracelets and necklaces. A few folks were sitting around having a quick snack, and others were taking pictures of the sea of fog before departing. After a few sips of water, I too was back on the road. read more

I used to not stop at rest stops but come to find out my long drives are better and more productive when I do. The Aliso Creek rest stop is about six miles south of Oceanside coming from Los Angeles; there are no more rest stops after this point. From here it was about 45 minutes to my destination in Kearny Mesa after driving an hour and 45 minutes from LA. Easy on and off ramp access. This rest area is spacious, plenty of parking and the area seems to be cleaned regularly. There are A LOT of vending machines and hot coffee vending stations. The restroom building was closed but they had decent portables. And while you are there, take a minute to walk behind the restroom building to catch some beautiful views of the ocean!! read more

If you're on the 5 South heading towards San Diego this is one of the most simple and easy rest stops to get in and out. The exit off the 5 leads right into the parking area. They have 3 large restroom buildings, and even a few vending machines to grab snacks and drinks incase you don't want to get all the way off the freeway to stop at a gas station/corner store. Parking lot is fairly big, and exiting the rest stops lead right back onto the freeway. No extra lanes or cross streets to get in the way of you getting right back into that traffic filled interstate freeway. read more

A clean, bleach-sanitized and well-lit rest area. There is plenty of parking, as it should be, and several buildings with restrooms. I appreciated that there are individual toilet doors, seat covers, and plenty of toilet paper. Most importantly, you can flush with your foot. The walk paths are well paved and wide for mobility devices. And there is extra care to have braille on the placards and ADA individual restrooms. To add value, the back is a full park to rest, eat, or enjoy sunshine. Sometimes a power nap is all that is needed. Nowadays, vending machines and store snacks are similar in costs. And this rest stop is consistently well stocked with an employee on-site. But since Oceanside is five miles south maybe it's worth the wait to get snacks later. BTW, stop at Aliso rest stop because the single bathroom at Chevron at the first Oceanside exit is gross. I stopped here during the day (9 am) and again in the evening (1030 pm). Aliso Creek Rest Area is a basic but functional stop along the way. It offers a vending machine at the center, restrooms that are reasonably maintained, and a scenic view accessible by a short walk. However, the area has a significant rodent problem that needs to be addressed. The squirrel infestation is absolutely DISGUSTING and the little furry rats need to be hunted. Besides being right on the ocean with amazing views the facilities are always clean and duriing the day find actual staff ensuring the rest stop is clean and litter free. **Dog Friendly** We stopped at both North and South sides on our San Diego trip. Overall the womens restrooms and outside were clean. Some people just do not clean up after themselves though. South side I had to try 4 stalls before I found one with toilet paper. Must have been a lot of travelers that Sunday night / Monday morning. Most doors no hooks so bring a large carabiner or something to hang bag/ backpack on the door. North side the first stall I tried was filled with tp. Both sides have a smoking area, we steered clear of that. After driving cross country 5 times so far in my lifetime I appreciate a SAFE clean Dog friendly rest stop. Car parking closest to restrooms. Only rest stop we came across within a 50 mile stretch of Los Angeles and San Diego. At least think it was that many miles. There were many stalls available, including a bunch of truck parking stalls. Restrooms were clean. There were metal toilets, which I couldn't stand because it was cold out so the last thing I wanted to do was sit on something cold. They have a bunch of vending machines that had a pretty decent selection of food and drinks, including a fresh brewed coffee vending machine. The coffee was terrible, but at least there was an option for freshly brewed coffee. Overall, not a bad place to stop for a bathroom break, get some fresh air, and stretch your legs. If you are going South or North on the 5 and you need to make a pit stop, this is your place. This is one of those rest areas that I have driven by for most of my life. I always noticed it, thinking it was kind of curious that they had one on the 5 this close to cities, but I never stop there until today. What you're fine there is a very large rest area. They have three different buildings that hold lavatories, so you'll probably not have to wait in line too long if you need to go. Hopefully, you won't have to wait in line at all. They also have a very large vending machine area. At these vending machines you can grab some water, sodas, and even some packaged sandwiches. So, if your hungry or thirsty this is a good place to stop. One of the downsides about this rest area is the fact that a lot of people stop there. Thus, it can become quite congested when you're pulling in or trying to leave. Just keep that in mind. Also, I'm writing this review during the time of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. What I noticed at this rest area is that there are several people living out of their cars. I imagine once upon a time the CHP would keep these people moving along to other locations. But, as we are in trying times, I imagine that is why they let them park their cars there for an extended period of time. This is either bad or good, this is just something I'm letting you know about, depicting this point in history. Overall, again, if you need a place to make a pitstop, grab a water, or just take a rest, this is your place while driving on the 5 near the Orange County, San Diego County line. read more

We were driving to San Diego and there was a terrible traffic; this rest area came as a blessing. We didn't want to crawl on 5 south; so we decided to stop here. This was just a casual stop, but turned out to be a good one. They do have plenty of parking for the cars and trucks. It was crowded, understandably because of the crazy traffic, people were just waiting for the traffic to clear. It's a well maintained rest area. The restrooms were clean. Good number of vending machines. We walked around a little bit; there are a few passages to the seashore. It's quite a walk, but we had all the time! Talk about location! Going south to San Diego through LA can be a pain, literally! Sitting in LA traffic will do a number on you! Aliso Creek Rest Area is arguably one of the best situated rest stops in Southern California! Don't believe me? Ask one of the guys you see pulling into the parking lot and doing a desperate 100 yard dash towards the restrooms!! Now here is the key, you will not see as many wanna-be Olympians on the northbound side, it is the southbound that I want you to focus on! Why you might ask? Well, if you are heading north from San Diego, you just do what you have to do, hop in your car with your cup off coffee and off you go! I don't know what it is about this place that makes it so special but, I really like it here. Each time I come home from visiting my daughter in San Diego I stop here. It's always clean, I always find staff working hard clearing trash and just basically keeping the place nice and tidy. There are vending machines with various types of drinks and snacks. There are several benches for you to rest in and lots of places for you to stretch and get energized for the continued trip. The bathrooms are always clean and tidy too. It's just such a cool little spot with somewhat of a nice view, depending where you're at. Even the squirrels look happy!! read more

Bathrooms There are three buildings, each has a men's room and a women's room. They are well maintained and very clean (for a rest area). There are some stalls missing the locks. Great rest stop on the coast. Unlike many rest stops which are strictly utilitarian affairs, this one has location, location, location. Right on the coast you can easily see the water. The actual rest stop itself is in a mission style and has clean restrooms. Because of its general location it does tend to be a bit crowded.
