We went to Carlo's in NYC last night. Even though the holiday season leads to busier store hours, the staff were still pleasant and efficient. I've been trying to avoid food dye, so I decided to skip the rainbow cake I normally get. The strawberry short cake was phenomenal! The strawberries were actually fresh instead of the jelly strawberries that a lot of supermarkets use. And the icing was so light and fluffy, just like a strawberry shortcake should have. The cake was also really good. Definitely my new favorite! read more

The place is always very clean and the staff are always very friendly. I have been going here for a couple years and my family always gets the lobster tails! They are always very crispy on the outside with a wonderful, soft, delicious cream on the inside that is not too sweet. They are always so yummy and a great trip. However, I do feel like they have gotten smaller over time. They still taste just as good but I definitely do think they have gotten smaller. I would still come back though as the lobster tails are a very nice treat every once in a while. read more

I work at cooper doing deliveries so I always buy goodies to bring to the workers while I'm dropping off gloves and stuff at the different locations and they weren't very good. So My Grandson's Mom wanted a Confetti or Cannoli Cake for her Birthday. Not too many places have a good cannoli cake and if they do they're in Philly so I looked up a few bakeries and saw this bakery had confetti cake and cannoli's so it was a 2 for 1 for me. Since the cake and desserts were going home with the birthday girl, I wanted to taste something! I ordered the chocolate slice and also the color striped one (cant remember the name now) I think they were $9 a slice The chocolate cake slice was delicious! Very dense but moist and definitely a great chocolate flavor to it The multi colored striped cake was also dense but moist too. The buttercream was prominent due to so many layers and the frosting in between all the layers but it was still good. I would suggest only eating sections at a time, these cake slices are big!! we were in the area and decided to stop in out of curiosity and i'm happy we did. it's cute inside, the baked goods they had available were displayed nicely and all looked very good. there's a small seating area with tables, the tables were clean as well as the bathrooms and the staff members we interacted with were helpful. i got both the regular and peanut butter cannoli, which were really good. if i find myself back here i'll probably try something else but only because their other items looked great too. only one criticism, the crushed peanuts on the side of the peanut butter cannoli tasted stale. my fiancée got a slice of strawberry shortcake which she thoroughly enjoyed. i would definitely go again and recommend others to come as well. read more

I have to agree with the other reviewers that have written that Carlo's Bake Shop is over hyped. When the place first opened, it was very crowded as people were curious. We went on an afternoon during lunch hours and the line was quite short and also the location had been open for a few weeks at that time. Carlo's for me is 2.5 stars. It is a nice store and clean and bright. The displays are attractive but they are cashing in on their TV fame. We had two cupcakes, Carrot Cake and Red Velvet. They were A-OK, but not great or memorable. On the plus side, they were not overly sweet which I like. On the whole they were just average, almost pretty good. Sweet Box in Philadelphia is so much better and also McMillan's Bakery has a better cup cake and is just a better bakery all around in the area. Sweet Eats Bakery in Vorhees has much better tasting cakes in my opinion. Again, as others have written, if you want to go because of the Cake Boss it is probably worth a trip. If you are just looking for a good bakery, Carlo's is nothing special. read more

Eh, 2.5 stars. I honestly was just craving some Tiramisu and thought maybe these guys would have some. Negative. My quick run over before a family dinner early Saturday afternoon, the store was empty, but there was a good variety of desserts to choose from. The place smelled heavenly of baked goods :) My second choice was strawberry shortcake. I unfortunately wanted like a true 'strawberry shortcake' with biscuits. The one I picked out was more like a vanilla cake with whipped cream and strawberries. Not bad. The strawberries weren't the freshest. Since I was there I thought might as well get a few things. Besides the single serving portion of the strawberry shortcake, I picked up the chocolate mousse cup and also a tiny cheesecake with a strawberry on it. The chocolate mousse was not my cup of tea. Barely tasted any chocolate flavor and the strawberries made it worse. The cheesecake, flavor was fine, but it was overly thick.The sticky tablespoon worth of strawberry syrup on top was not necessary. For these 3 little items, around $24 bucks. I was like, whhhat.. There are plenty of other bakeries around that I would like to try before coming back here to possibly try out other items. read more

Ordered a Piecaken for Thanksgiving/my birthday. It was beautiful but sickeningly sweet. The buttercream was supposed to be cinnamon but just tasted like really sweet buttercream. Thick gross layers of it. The cake was dry and tasteless. The pecan pie again, way too sweet and the pumpkin pie was bland. Overall, not good and no one finished their dessert. We threw out the leftovers and opted for plain apple pie from ShopeRite and ice cream. I had chocolate cake from this locations before and it wasn't great. I stopped by Carlo's Bakery to grab a pie to bring to my boyfriend's cousins house. I was in a serious time crunch so I was happy to find out they allow you to pre-order items over the phone and online. I called the morning of and was told they had a variety of pies to choose from. The employee told me I had to pay over the phone in order to keep the item on hold. I ended up not doing that but when I called back later, another employee allowed me to put it on hold and said I could pay when I arrived to pick it up. I'm glad I was able to do that -- call me crazy but I'd like to see what I'm purchasing before I actually pay for it. The store is conveniently located in a shopping center where there is ample parking. The store itself isn't too big but they do offer some seating. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I'd have to agree with other Yelpers in that there really didn't seem to be THAT much to choose from. The cakes looked similar to what you'd find at a ShopRite. They also had other bakery staples including pastries and cookies. I also noticed plenty of branded merchandise (tshirts, aprons, mugs, etc) for purchase. I ended up grabbing the apple crumb pie. I was told it serves 6-8 people. While it was thankfully enough for my group, it definitely seemed to be on the smaller side. Also, it did not appear the same as how it was pictured on the website. It did not have the sliced apple garnish on top. The pie came out to be around $16. And while it didn't break the bank, it also seemed expensive for the quantity. Everyone seemed to enjoy the pie.... but I'll admit, there was nothing that really set it above others that I've tried. Long story short, I would come back to Carlo's but I also wouldn't necessarily feel compelled to visit again. Wow! What happened to this place? Stopped in looking for a sweet dessert after dinner since they're open late. It's actually been awhile since I've visited- mostly because of the many good local bakeries in the area (Gallos, McMilians, L&M, etc) that I prefer. On this visit, I was really surprised by the now very limited selection (not even their famous lobster tails). They've even eliminated many of the glass cases (maybe two remain), so I don't think this was an "end of the day" experience. Ended up walking out empty handed. read more

I felt hesitant reading the reviews, but I was super impressed. I normally don't like cream fillings but after reading dozens of reviews promoting the lobster tail, I had to try it. It's not the normal cream filling and is seriously delicious surrounded by a perfect light, flaky crust. My niece ordered the strawberry cheesecake which was also delicious. I do have to say, I wasn't a fan of the cupcake. Like others have mentioned in previous reviews, I found the cupcake pretty dry and less than delicious. This did change my review from 5 to 4 stars but overall I still loved the place, and they still baked up some pretty tasty treats... but I do understand where someone would be disappointed that someone with a show called "Cake Boss", doesn't have a stellar cupcake. read more

I wasn't a believer until today! I never imagined in 1000 years that the pastry and cakes would be so good from Carlos. I have watched Carlos on tv for years and I often find myself passing this location while in Nj for business or family events. But today when I got off work I decided that today was the day I try the so called best. And to my delight it was very good! I got cupcakes (peanut butter cup), pecan thing with chocolate, and a mouse cake. I've can only speak for the cupcake right now and it was soft, decadent, and not to sugary which is all my top criteria for a banging cupcake! Our daughters were obsessed with Cake Boss when it was on TLC so we decided to surprise them with a stop at Carlo's while we were out east on vacation. I was curious if it was all hype or if the pastries would really meet my expectations. We got there 45 minutes before closing, and I was really worried that what was available would be limited or just not fresh enough. I wouldn't say the selections were unlimited, but I was pleased with the variety, particularly given how late it was. I ordered the strawberry eclair, which was OUTSTANDING. The fruit to filling ratio was perfect, and the pastry was light and delicious. My husband ordered the white chocolate mousse, which was to die for!!! It was super rich but oh so good! My daughter ordered the cannoli. I don't feel I can fairly review the cannoli because I don't care for ricotta based filling to begin with (I make mine with cream), but my daughter loved it. I'm always a little suspicious when I see such poor reviews on a place that's relatively brand new & has ties to a famous individual. I wonder how many people are being hyper critical just to be critical. I live in Marlton, this location is off Main Street in my town. I have visited on three different occasions and have sampled the coffee as well as a variety of desserts. I have never had a pastry, cake or cupcake that wasn't fresh and absolutely delicious. Their tiramisu was fresh, silky, generous and decodent. Their individual cheese cakes were gloriously creamy & flavorful. The lobster tail pastry - omg don't even get me started on that - it's heavenly! The party itself was so flakey, fresh, crispy while the cream was mindblowingly deliciius. If you're going to break your diet for something, the lobster tail is it. Over the weekend, the line is typically long. It moves pretty quickly provided the people in front of you can figure out what they want and don't change their minds 10 times. The service is friendly, the employees are patient & happy to explain what's what. For me, I give them 4 stars out of 5 and that's because I don't like Italian cookies and 1/3 of their selection is some variety of Italian cookies. The pastries I sampled deserve 5 stars. I think people are critical of Carlo's Bake Shoppe for the same reason they refuse to acknowledge a good meal at a chain restaurant. It's unfortunate, but look at it this way - check out how long the line is. Would they have so many customers if what they sold wasn't tasty? I would say no. Been wanting to visit the Hoboken location to try the goodies by the Cake Boss for a long time now. Found out he was opening in Marlton, I was so excited. The long lines always deterred me and this location is no different. Best advice is to come on a weekday. When you enter, be sure to grab a number and while you wait, you can admire all the baked goods. When my number was finally called, I placed my order with the staff who enters your order on an iPad and reconfirms with you what you order. They will then instruct you to move to the other side while they gather your goodies and box them up for you. Once they gather it, they will call your name and you approach the register to pay. They do accept credit cards, and if you use it, you will sign the iPad with your finger (fancy technology these days!) I ordered 5 goodies: red velvet cupcake, mini chocolate cannoli, "famous" crumb bun (small portion of crumb cake), mini strawberry cheesecake, and lobster tail. I didn't think the cupcake, cannoli, or crumb cake was anything special.. the cupcake and crumb cake were a bit on the dry side. The cannoli, while the shell was tasty, I didn't enjoy the filling too much. On the other hand, the lobster tail and cheesecake was amazing! The lobster tail is crunchy and filled with a sweet cream. The cream is pretty sweet, but the combo with the crunchy crust was just heaven in my mouth. The cheesecake was delicious with my favorite part being the crust is made out of CAKE instead of the usual graham cracker crust. The treats can set you back a pretty penny. The mini cheesecake itself was $7! The lobster tail is more reasonable around $4. The cupcake, cannoli, and crumb bun were all around the $4 price range. While this is okay for a once in a while treat, I don't think it is something I will crave. The cheesecake is pretty good, but for that price, I could get a better value elsewhere without the long lines and hassle. It was good to try though. Definitely recommend you try at least once! Carlo's is a let down. There is always a long wait and it takes forever once you place your order to receive the food and pay. The staff is very unfriendly and rude to the customers. I've been there on multiple occasions so that I could give it a fair chance but my disappointment has increased with each visit. They've also forgotten desserts and when we get home we realize they left out the cupcakes or cookies twice. The food is nothing special. The only saving grace are the lobster tails which are very yummy! Take my advice and head to Gallo's or McMillan's instead. read more
