Upon move in, Sunrise literally rolled out a red carpet for my grandparents and cared for them as if they were celebrities throughout the remaining months of their lives. It was a true treat for them, but even more significant to us - the joy that radiated within my grandparents is something we hadn't seen in some time! My grandfather literally referred to the facility as "opulent and extravagant"; he felt like he was on eternal vacation. We chose Sunrise as they had memory care, which would allow my grandparents to stay together as my grandfathers dementia progressed. Unfortunately, my grandparents passed sooner than we anticipated, but in the 5 months we spent with Sunrise we established lasting connections. That they are extremely understaffed. That there has even come a time when 1 caregiver had to work a whole floor themselves during the morning and evening shift. So therefore how is one person giving showers, feeding them , changing them and caring for them. I am being told my mom is sometimes not fed because they forget to feed her. They use the supplies that I buy for her like combs, socks and shirts and use them for other residents. They use my mom's wipes and briefs for other residents. That the staff does not use hoyer as they should be and sometimes one caregiver is transferring my mom who is not that skinny or lightweight onto the wheel chair and back for meals. I didn't think much because I barely am able to visit with my work schedule and so a I was told this by caregivers Mike the director is apparently cheap and does not provide enough supplies that even caregivers have to go without wipes or gloves. I will be calling the state licensing and have them come in the specific days and times the caregivers have explained to me so that they could see what's really going on.

After serving as my Mom's primary caregiver for 11 years, I spent two years personally checking…read moredozens of local North County senior residential care homes for my 90 year old mother, who suffers from advanced Alzheimer's and Dementia. Most are OK, not great. The larger facilities are too hotel-ish and very costly. A few were terrible. I reported THE MANSE in Vista to the state for elder abuse, and ultimately they were given a only minor warning. Avoid that house of horrors at all costs! After putting Mom's name on a list at Blue Skies I decided to call Lauren back to see if they had an opening. Fortunately for us, she had an opening and so in February of 2014 we moved Mom into their Oceanside facility. They have two large 6 room/bed homes, one in Oceanside and the other in San Marcos. Both are big beautiful homes with lovely yards and gardens. Mom's care there has been wonderful, as Lauren and her staff treat each resident as if they are family, with lots of TLC, activities, and personal care. Staffing levels are plentiful, with a 2-3 staffing contingent for the six residents at each place 24/7. Amazingly, their price in very middle-of-the-road and well worth the services and facilities provided with delicious hot meals 3X daily, and plenty of snacks and drinks. Their loving, caring attitude is priceless! If you are seeking a wonderful home-like "family" atmosphere for an elder loved one, you will not find a nicer, more accommodating place in the area for ANY price. I know this as I checked most of them personally and can attest to this fact. So if you need some help with a loved one getting on in years, or needing help with daily living activities, do yourself a favor and call Lauren and get on their list right away. You will thank yourself as I do every single day. Yes, there is a list but they do have turnover due to the advanced aged of many of their residents.

The quality of care was not given as well! We were told my grandmother would get bathed every day and she was reviving baths once a week. She had to move rooms due to an issue with her room and while "they moved her" they broke her chair, her tv, and jewelry ended up missed included two diamonds out of her wedding band. When addressed with a manager, she avoided and wouldn't call back or participate in a conference call with family to get answers. Gifts that were sent there were never delivered, or were offended delivered 5-10 days after arriving. I live out of state and had to fly out there to make sure that the items delivered were delivered correctly. When Walmart orders for her were delivered, they were being opened and items were missing! The "leadership" there is a joke and dips and dodges all responsibility and will not have any conversation if it's the tiny bit uncomfortable. The "people running the place" are all about money and are farming as many elderly people as they can to make as much money as they can! They take no accountability, no ownership, and clearly do not have any leadership or management ability to speak to people, or have actual conversations. This place was horrible and I wouldn't send my worst enemy to this hell hole!

But rather than working with him and the family, they evicted him, causing him even more anxiety and disorientation. We never would have moved my father into Aegis if the sales team and nursing staff hadn't assured us this was the appropriate facility for him and Aegis would be his "last home." They were deceptive and inflexible and actually quite heartless. We are considering suing the company for misleading us and causing my dad's health to decline so severely. DO NOT BE DECEIVED BY THE PRETTY BUILDING AND SMILING STAFF. THEY ARE ONLY INTO THE MONEY THEIR RESIDENTS CAN PAY AND HAVE LITTLE REGARD FOR THE SENIORS THEY PROFESS TO CARE FOR.

They called the police on a 5150, I think it's called, and he spent the next 3 weeks In the psych ward at the VA hospital. There, they screwed up his drugs, and he didn't sleep for a week. It's been a nightmare. And now, because of his behavior at Aegis, it was almost impossible to find him a new place to live, when the VA hospital released him. I can't even begin to tell you how angry I am with them. And from what I've been reading about assisted living, they cherry pick their residents. My dad is safe now, but like a zombie on antipsychotic drugs. He's 94 and otherwise in very good health. However I see the end of his life coming soon. It's so sad

Carlsbad by the Sea is relatively small and is likely to remain an intimate face-to-face community in which everyone gets to know each other. There are many events and activities, most of which bring people together. Staff is a constant presence and very caring toward the residents. Since we are all equally human, none of us is happy about everything all the time. Some of us like to run things. Others don't. Some of us grumble. Others of us smile. Many of us do both. Sometimes dining service is slow. Some people complain that our menus have too many choices. That's no different from our lives before Carlsbad by the Sea. In sum, for us--and most of our friends--this is a great place to grow old. Those residents who with time come to need care services are admirably tended in the skilled nursing facility, which is separately licensed but closely associated with Carlsbad by the Sea. Re the business model, residents do not pay for long-term care insurance in our fees. That means we pay only for the health care we use. While that can be costly for some, it's more affordable for those who need less care. There is no care-inclusive option such as that offered at some other similar communities. Most residents pay an entry fee which becomes nonrefundable after about five years. There is a refundable option at double the price. Carlsbad by the Sea is part of Front Porch, a corporation that runs a number of communities and other senior serving entities. Local community business operations are integrated into the larger corporation. The compelling attraction for Carlsbad by the Sea is its location on the beach in the Village area of Carlsbad, a well-managed seaside community. There is a train station just a block away to the East and public buses pass by the entrance. In addition, the community itself offers a well-regarded transportation service, though many residents continue to maintain their own cars.
