Carlsbad by the Sea is relatively small and is likely to remain an intimate face-to-face community in which everyone gets to know each other. There are many events and activities, most of which bring people together. Staff is a constant presence and very caring toward the residents. Since we are all equally human, none of us is happy about everything all the time. Some of us like to run things. Others don't. Some of us grumble. Others of us smile. Many of us do both. Sometimes dining service is slow. Some people complain that our menus have too many choices. That's no different from our lives before Carlsbad by the Sea. In sum, for us--and most of our friends--this is a great place to grow old. Those residents who with time come to need care services are admirably tended in the skilled nursing facility, which is separately licensed but closely associated with Carlsbad by the Sea. Re the business model, residents do not pay for long-term care insurance in our fees. That means we pay only for the health care we use. While that can be costly for some, it's more affordable for those who need less care. There is no care-inclusive option such as that offered at some other similar communities. Most residents pay an entry fee which becomes nonrefundable after about five years. There is a refundable option at double the price. Carlsbad by the Sea is part of Front Porch, a corporation that runs a number of communities and other senior serving entities. Local community business operations are integrated into the larger corporation. The compelling attraction for Carlsbad by the Sea is its location on the beach in the Village area of Carlsbad, a well-managed seaside community. There is a train station just a block away to the East and public buses pass by the entrance. In addition, the community itself offers a well-regarded transportation service, though many residents continue to maintain their own cars.

Elsa and staff were friendly, detailed and professional. Owner, David Cooper, was often present to say "Hello" and ask if all was good. Upon move in, Sunrise literally rolled out a red carpet for my grandparents and cared for them as if they were celebrities throughout the remaining months of their lives. It was a true treat for them, but even more significant to us - the joy that radiated within my grandparents is something we hadn't seen in some time! My grandfather literally referred to the facility as "opulent and extravagant"; he felt like he was on eternal vacation. We chose Sunrise as they had memory care, which would allow my grandparents to stay together as my grandfathers dementia progressed. Unfortunately, my grandparents passed sooner than we anticipated, but in the 5 months we spent with Sunrise we established lasting connections. My family and I will be forever indebted to each of the talented and caring staff that loved my grandparents like family.

Our mom was at Laguna Estates from Jan 2021 through August 2024. She was 92 years old, when she…read moremoved into the assisted living (mid COVID) area where we were told she would have assistance with basically everything on the list and then it was personalized, with medication, meal reminders, dressing and hygiene, activit reminders and just all scheduled things. But we quickly noticed that they talked big for the actual help they provided If you didn't remember things. In June 2021, just 6 months later, they insisted she move to their "all inclusive" Memory Care area for 24 hour eyes on her. That was a really good fit because they only had a few residents. Mom could get around with a walker but needed basic assistance with day and night care. She could feed herself, use the restroom, make her bed, she participated in the daily crafts and activities, she followed the staff around and mom figured out that the 3 "exit doors" ((in the secure 24 hour memory care)) had signs on them that said "STOP PUSH TO OPEN" so she said all she was doing was following the instructions and she was looking for her husband... pretty typical dementia behavior. They told us she was an EXIT SEEKER and we said where is the professional staff to redirect her...? When she was moved to the 24 hour memory care we understood that they would adjust staffing as needed with changes in behavior or care when needed because the turnover of residents fluctuate... So after 3 1/2 years in the memory care building at 96 years old in her now familiar home -they evicted her. Claiming they couldn't accommodate her care needs. But that was a cop out. I say this because in addition to paying her current room rental of close to 10,000 per month for her care, they insisted that because she was an EXIT SEEKER ((and they were UNDER STAFFED)) that WE would have to hire an outside personal 24 hour care nurse to stay with her, in her room, so basically we were paying for the Laguna Estates staff AND a 24 hour nurse too. That was their excuse to evict her, but we think the real reason was that when she originally moved into the room in 2021 that the room that was available was originally set up as a "shared" room. We think they just wanted that room space for 2 residents rental for more $$$. We feel that they should have at least offered that she share a room instead of evicting her and claiming that they couldn't care for her needs. During her stay at LE the Executive Director changed to the 4th different one. They were cutting staff and splitting shifts and leaving wheelchair dependent disabled folks alone for hours at a time in the tv room, in their rooms or wherever. With this eviction they really placed our fragile mom in a stressful situation. Unfortunately the move was very difficult and too stressful for her to rally with and she passed away about 6 weeks after they evicted her ~16 days before her 97th birthday. RIP our sweet mom. We love you

I could not have asked for a more wonderful care staff or support system to both my dad and myself. They were extremely attentive, helping to take care of all his needs: meds, showers and bringing food to his room when he didn't show up in the dining room. These caregivers became like family. Each one amazing in their own right and only wanted the very best for my father. I can't thank the staff enough for taking such incredible care of him, especially in the last few months of his life when he became bedridden & a little more challenging. They would constantly keep me informed on any little change in his physical condition or demeanor. In addition to the caregivers, the front of house staff (Roxanne, Cynthia & Shelley) were always there to assist me with any questions or concerns I had about anything. All amazingly helpful and caring. Unfortunately, my dad is now gone, but these wonderful people provided him a safe, cozy & welcoming place to be for the last few years of his life. I am forever grateful for their loving kindness and care.

The PT's and the OT's are all solid and were honest about my dad's recovery which I appreciated. However, I want to give a special shout out to Alexis. She wears many hats at the facility, but she has easily been the best case manager I have worked with. After serving as my Mom's primary caregiver for 11 years, I spent two years personally checking…read moredozens of local North County senior residential care homes for my 90 year old mother, who suffers from advanced Alzheimer's and Dementia. Most are OK, not great. The larger facilities are too hotel-ish and very costly. A few were terrible. I reported THE MANSE in Vista to the state for elder abuse, and ultimately they were given a only minor warning. Avoid that house of horrors at all costs! After putting Mom's name on a list at Blue Skies I decided to call Lauren back to see if they had an opening. Fortunately for us, she had an opening and so in February of 2014 we moved Mom into their Oceanside facility. They have two large 6 room/bed homes, one in Oceanside and the other in San Marcos. Both are big beautiful homes with lovely yards and gardens. Mom's care there has been wonderful, as Lauren and her staff treat each resident as if they are family, with lots of TLC, activities, and personal care. Staffing levels are plentiful, with a 2-3 staffing contingent for the six residents at each place 24/7. Amazingly, their price in very middle-of-the-road and well worth the services and facilities provided with delicious hot meals 3X daily, and plenty of snacks and drinks. Their loving, caring attitude is priceless! If you are seeking a wonderful home-like "family" atmosphere for an elder loved one, you will not find a nicer, more accommodating place in the area for ANY price. I know this as I checked most of them personally and can attest to this fact. So if you need some help with a loved one getting on in years, or needing help with daily living activities, do yourself a favor and call Lauren and get on their list right away. You will thank yourself as I do every single day. Yes, there is a list but they do have turnover due to the advanced aged of many of their residents.

Bill & Josie are the caring, hands-on couple who own it, and have a great set up with a caring staff and the best staff to resident ratio I've seen. My father had been in several other facilities, both large & small, and this is by far the best (and the only one he hasn't wanted to run away from!). There's not even one transition strip inside the home he's in, 452 Foussat, which is important, because every other small place we saw had several possible trip hazards, and that could be a very serious thing. Oceanside Elderly Care Home is more like a family atmosphere than a regular facility, and the staff really cares and are not just there to do the basic job requirements, as I've seen elsewhere. It really makes a difference! This place also has a great yard with beautiful gardens, an organic vegetable garden & fruit trees, and places to sit and walk outside, which adds a lot of value. This home is also very conducive and open to family & friends visiting, and is a comfortable, clean environment with good WIFI, so visitors can hang out and be around a loved one. I highly recommend this place for anyone who can no longer live on his/her own.
