My husband and I have toured several communities in the area as we plan for our golden years. Fairwinds Ivey Ranch in Oceanside was a breath of fresh air. From the moment we walked in we could feel a difference. We were greeted with smiles from both staff and residents. Our tour was informative and our questions were answered. Everything, especially MANAGEMENT!!! FOOD SUCKS! And no matter how much I've complained, nothing has been done to improve it and that's been over three years. I buy groceries out and have a private care-giver prepare meals for me. They are Tremendously UNDER STAFFED (especially on weekends and holidays) they mostly hire outside agency personnel. Of course, ALL MANAGERS ARE OFF ON WEEKENDS AND 3 or 4 DAY HOLIDAYS. Living here is tantamount to a nervous breakdown. If you can do better, DO IT! Why have I been living here three years? I visited three other senior care communities before I made it over to tour Fairwinds and was immediately impressed by the sense of community and good feeling among the residents and staff. I was a school principal and you can tell, walking through a school campus, if a community is happy-- or not-- no amount of PR can hide it. Every resident I interacted with as I walked through the facility was cheerful and happy to talk about their life there. The food and ambiance in the dining room was good. If my parents end up deciding to move here I am very confident they'll soon be part of a good community, make friends, and be well taken care of as needed. read more

My dad has been here since Feb 2023. He was fortunate to find such a great place and even more fortunate that he had paid for this later life option for many years. He was able to get a unit with a kitchen and AC. One thing I wish they had is someone in house who could take care of typical senior wounds like skin tears and such. It's very time consuming to get a call and have to go to urgent care when all they are going to do is clean and dress the skin tear, and then, have to go back in a week. One nght we sat at Tri City Hospital from 8:20pm until 3:30 in the morning as urgent care closed at 8. It was implied early on that Fairwinds were going to impliment this type of in house service but it has yet to happen as far as I know. My brother and I had this Thanksgiving with our dad and another gentleman we met at the table and it was very enjoyable. The food was excellent and I was shocked when they gave us each a container of leftovers (see pic). The desk people are very conscientious about keeping us informed if there are any problems. The location is only 2.5 miles from me, so, it's very convenient to pick up dad and get him out two days a week for his Dr. appointments, shopping, and, other errands. My mother resided at Fairwinds Ivy Ranch for nearly six years. Although the location was unremarkable, the cost was much higher than other places in North County. The administration and management departments were awful, and it was difficult to deal with them. They were pleasant and courteous as long as everything was going according to their plan. However, if anything went wrong, they became disrespectful and unresponsive. Moreover, they were substantially overpriced, and they would bend the rules whenever it suited them. Despite having signs indicating that they were handicap accessible, they were not, particularly regarding the back parking lot. There was no way for a wheelchair or a walker to go up the curb at an accessible handicap spot, even though they displayed the placard that they were. Furthermore, they had a hard time retaining their staff, resulting in a very high turnover of employees. Their healthcare department and med techs were challenging to deal with except for Kaleb, who was exceptional, and Virginia, who was very kind. The rest of them were forgettable. They were impossible to reach over the phone, didn't return calls, and disregarded my mother's medical power of attorney, doing whatever they wanted instead. Paula, their community sales manager, was overly sweet when she wanted something to go her way, then two-faced when it didn't. They ignored legal documents, and when I sent emails to ask why, they only replied with automated responses saying that they were out of the office so they didn't have to deal with it. They have the worst staff/management and are very disrespectful. The dining room had good food when they eventually served it to you. At least until they modified their menus and took off all the good food. I must say that David is an excellent cook. However, the dining room, and pompous Thomas, is a joke. My mother really disliked it there especially towards the end of her stay. We finally relocated her to a place in Carlsbad. It is much more comfortable and nicer. The people are so sweet and friendly and much easier to work with. I would avoid Fairwinds unless you enjoy overpriced, unfriendly caregivers and staff. read more

My sister-in-law researched a lot of places before we selected Fairwinds Ivey Ranch as the best assisted living location for my mother to reside. After 7 years have passed, it confirms the research as we cannot say enough about the facility, services & especially the personnel!!! The staff, to include top management, really goes out of their way to make sure all the residents are attended to with extra loving care!!! Walking into Fairwinds feels like you are walking into an upscale hotel with your own furnished apartment & restaurant. There is also an entertainment director that always creates unique events, in addition, to weekly activities: Bingo, Poker, Brain Games (very good for the grey cells) etc... We recently had a family celebration @ Fairwinds & the staff helped immensely in making sure we had all the help needed for a great event!!! I just can't say enough about how pleased my whole family is with my mother living in such a great place with fantastic people & service!!! read more

I'm writing this review with tears in my eyes, as today I had to move my mom out of Fairwinds into a memory care facility after 9 wonderful years living at Fairwinds. The staff at Fairwinds, led by the amazingly caring Jessica Sommer, couldn't be any more supportive and nurturing. They've been by my mom's side through myriad ups and downs, always adapting the level of care that she's needed based on circumstances at the moment. During the best of times, the activities, trips - led by the indefatigable Ann, parties, and overall camaraderie were unbeatable. During the challenges (surgeries, memory loss, etc.) they were always there for her, always with a caring attitude. I never worried that my mother wasn't being cared for in an appropriate manner. All of the nursing, med tech, and caregivers that I met over the years were of the highest caliber. The facility itself is beautiful, and my mom's apartment was always well-maintained. Now that we're almost post-COVID, the residents are back in the recently updated dining room, gym, and other open areas. We'll miss the many friendships formed with both residents and staff, and are beyond grateful for the love, support and wonderful memories created at Fairwinds. read more

I helped Dad pick this place out almost five years ago. Dad was newly widowed and going through a really rough time and the staff there was beyond wonderful during this transition. I could fill 5 pages with specific praise for this establishment but let me just cover the best of the best. Management: Jessica has that rare blend of business savvy, compassion and emotional intelligence. She runs a very tight ship but does so with grace and poise and it's apparent she genuinely cares for all of her people, residents and staff. My Dad thinks the world of her and for good reason. I think she may really be an angel. Facility: when I first walked in I thought this place could easily pass for a 3 or 4 star hotel. And they keep it looking sharp every day. Dad and I toured other places and Fairwinds Ivey Ranch really stood and stands apart in so many ways. Value: we shopped around and Fairwinds offers the best bang for the buck. You can find slightly less expensive places but they are, I'm going to say it, shabby and even smelly and the staff have attitudes. You can pay much, much more and not do any better. There are more ritzy places in North San Diego County but none finer in terms of vibe and quality of life. Residents: having gotten to know a good many residents I am amazed by the diversity and character of my Dad's neighbors. Many of them are just amazing and have life stories that are book worthy. There's the fellow that survived a concentration camp. B-17 pilots, former spies, concert pianists and on and on. What touches me most is how they look out for each other. Assisted Living v. Retirement Facility. Dad requires assisted living and Fairwinds provides that incredibly well but for all intents and purposes this place feels like a cool retirement home. And it is also a retirement home. It's a very cool hybrid and offers the best of both worlds. Facilities that are exclusively "assisted living" are radically different places and not nearly so happy and vibrant. Nursing Staff: kind and competent and always nearby ready to help. These professionals have saved my Dad's butt on several occasions and I am humbled by how hard they work to keep their elderly residents feeling safe and cared for. I sleep better knowing they are on duty and keeping an eye on Dad. Finally, here's a pro-tip from the savvy residents: don't wait until life throws a serious curve ball and you're not at your best to make important choices and you simply must move somewhere where you can get some help. Do it early and while you can enjoy the people, the activities, the trips and a rich life. But if you are ready to make a move by all means tour several places, talk to the people that live there and make your last tour Fairwinds. I think you find it's a great place to call home or your parent's or grandparent home. If I could give 6 stars I would! read more

What a fantastic facility! The staff is very involved and their new nurse on staff is Awesome! Very responsive to the needs of the residents and it is very apparent that she cares about not only the residents, but the staff members who work their as well! Well i am working for a contractor doing a updated remodel here, and from my "fly on the wall " perspective this resort-style home is as good as it gets. The staff here treats the residents with respect and dignity, and there is always fun things going on. The facilities are well maintained and top notch, and friendships and group activities are always on display. My mother has been a resident of Fairwinds for almost two years. For the first time in her life she is living alone. At first we were concerned, however she is thriving! My family is so comforted knowing that she is in a safe, well maintained environment. The stat is friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. There are so many activities you can't possibly get bored. It's rare that my mom isn't participating in a game, painting, dancing or enjoying some other activity offered on a daily basis. She has made many friends and it's heartwarming to watch them interact. These ladies have a lot of fun! We know she is well taken care of and that she is happy living her life to the fullest. Not a good place. Staff members need major customer service training. Notice how they all congregate at the reception area just to gossip? Do they ever work? Allison B. My mom moved here over a year ago after months and months of great hesitation and fear. (Can you relate to that concern??) Although she had visited Fairwinds frequently as she lived right up the street, she was so afraid to make the commitment and leave her home of 26 years that she had shared with my dad. It's a huge leap. She finally took an apartment, then had a serious back injury just weeks before moving in. Although I live out of state, I was with her constantly that first month at Fairwinds, as well as many, many subsequent trips throughout her healing process. I realized quickly that beyond the attractive apartments, lovely surroundings, and spotless premises, what's most important is the staff that works in senior living communities. I honestly never realized just how critical that was, looking more at how nice a place looked, what the activities were, and what furniture you could fit in a sample apartment. If you're doing that too, change your focus to the interactions of staff with residents, and resident with resident. Don't just have a meal there and take a tour. Go to several fun activities and classes (there are a ton!), sit in the lobby and bistro, talk to the residents and observe the staff. At different times of the day it may be quiet when you're there, but just wait a bit and you'll see the buzz of fun activity and social engagement. That's so important for happiness, especially for those who have lost a spouse and feel pretty alone. I give Fairwinds an overall A+!! Jessica, a top notch manager, has hired an incredible staff. They're simply amazing, highly organized, very creative, truly compassionate and fun - honestly! Their ability to stay on top of everything is inspiring and impressive. They've mastered multi-tasking with a smile! The residents are really wonderful as well. They look out for each other and are encouraging and kind. Just a quality group of friendly people all the way around. When I go home, I feel great knowing my mom has plenty of activities and kind friends to make her days full, but most importantly, she has a true sense of belonging and value which I credit the staff for.
