Both my sister and I live in San Diego and I decided on Bayshire Carlsbad for my dad's skilled nursing so he could be closer to home. From the moment we arrived to the moment he left, it was nothing but a pleasant experience for us. The staff was caring and prompt. Any request I had would be handled immediately. The PT's and the OT's are all solid and were honest about my dad's recovery which I appreciated. However, I want to give a special shout out to Alexis. She wears many hats at the facility, but she has easily been the best case manager I have worked with. She knew all of her residents and organized everything to make a smooth transition out of the facility. I would definitely consider Bayshire Carlsbad again for any future needs. The staff genuinely deeply care about the residence go above and beyond to take care of the seniors, get to know them on an individual basis, and have them feel safe. Any place that involves people, and a community, will have some issues at times, it's human nature, however I know that these people really are concerned with making things as right as possible for as many of the residents as they can. My Mother-in-law passed in March, right as the pandemic was starting. In her final week all the staff made sure the family could take care of her and still stay safe. Since then, my Father-in-law hasn't been able to come out and be with us, and we haven't been able to have a proper memorial. However, we feel he is in such a safe place with people who care about his emotions and overall well-being. Most impactful for our whole family, since we live in another state, the Director went above and beyond and offered to pick up my Mother-in-laws urn/ashes from the mortuary and she delivered them to my Father-in-Law. Her kindness and care touched us all beyond words. Thank you to all of the staff at Brookdale San Marcos for your care, and for keeping our family members safe especially in this crazy time!

She took my information, Sue, at Bressi Ranch active care and gave it out without my permission. I'm not sure if I could trust this place with my family if I can't trust them with my phone number. I did have the feeling this was going to happen, I got a very bad feeling when she mentioned this place, and said I should call her. I wanted to say to her I would prefer not to. And you should not share my number. I just assumed that a place like this would take a persons privacy into consideration I was so wrong and I'm so annoyed right now. I texted Kathy Ellis back, and I said Sue should not have shared my number and to never contact me again. I also mentioned I was going to leave this yelp review because I was making private phone calls about my private life and my mom's private medical condition and she decided to share it with somebody with no permission. First of all, this is being written 4 months after my MIL's death. I have had time to process…read more This review is based on facts, not my opinion. Secondly, my MIL lived at Sunrise La Costa for 8 1/2 years. It started going down hill about 2019. As bad as we saw it, Sunrise was her home and elderly people don't like change. We couldn't convince her to move. Having said that, I wouldn't recommend Sunrise to my worst enemy. My mother-in-law lived there 8 1/2 years. What we saw occurred over years, not a short period of time. In 8 1/2 years, her room was never painted, recarpeted and nothing was done to maintain the bathroom. They recently remodeled the common area, but if you go into a room, the carpet is worn, stained and probably smells. Weekly cleaning consisted of vacuuming the middle of the room and a quick wipe down of the bathroom counter. Her care levels would be increased (along with her monthly fees), and we were not notified until after it occurred and I got a higher bill. When I called to inquire about why the bill was higher, they said 'we talked to your mother-in-law. She agreed to the new care'. As the responsible bill paying person I should've been made aware of levels of care and costs. At one point, they overcharged me $8000 for a one month bill. I called to disputed it, I was told it would be taken care of. Then my bill next arrived. The overcharge hadn't been taken care of and a day later, I got a letter in the mail saying I was being sent to collections. Sent to collections over their billing mistake! Two days, 5 phone calls to Sunrise, none of which were returned and finally a phone call to corporate the mistake was cleared up. There was only bus service for drs appointments on Wednesdays. My MIL's cardiologist wasn't in the office on Wednesday, so she had to change doctors. The staff, especially after Covid was a revolving door. I never knew who to talk to. I would call talk to one billing person or Care staff, a week later I would call us to talk to the same staff, and I was told they were gone. This happened time and time again. As far as care? When we were paying $10,000/ month, we'd expect decent care. My mother-in-law fell at one point. I was called. I was told of her fall and I was told they were taking care of it. My daughter happened to visit my mother-in-law five days later. My daughter called and asked if I knew my mother-in-law hadn't left her room in five days because she was in so much pain. The staff never called to tell me this. I drove down from Los Angeles, took my mother to the doctor and found out she had a fractured pelvis and cracked shoulder blade . On her last illness, she called me at 9:30 in the morning. She said she didn't feel good, she'd been throwing up for two days, she had been refusing her medication for two days. She had told four staff members that she didn't feel good, no one did anything. It wasn't until I called and talked to the head nurse that they looked at her. I asked the head nurse why they didn't do anything for her. His response was that she never complains. I asked if she never complains, why wasn't she heard or listen to when she did complain. He had no answer. When we learned of my MIL's final illness and she was moved to hospice. No one called from Sunrise to check in on her or us. When I called to tell the director she wouldn't be coming back, there were no words of sympathy or care. All I heard was the room had to be emptied in 30 days. I know the director had only been there a few months, but my MIL was a long term resident. I got more words of sympathy and concern when I called to cancel her Mastercard! Other Sunrises may be different. My experience with Sunrise La Costa is that they are a money making operation, not the family atmosphere they advertise.

My parent was a resident for a very short time. I moved them out due to lack of compassion,…read moretraining, and staffing. The staff is NOT trained to handle different dementia behaviors. I witnessed staff, on several occasions, ignoring residents when they became combative and difficult. Hearing them tell one another, "I am not handling them". My parent was accused of aggressive/abusive behaviors. Sending them to the ER, rather than deescalating the situation. Staff expected my demented parent to inform them when they were becoming agitated or overwhelmed to provide them with their prescribed "as needed" medication. Staffs lack medical training/guidance Director Caroline S. would call demanding my parent be removed out of the facility, despite physician advising against this. Our provider informed the director, on more than one occasion, any move would be detrimental to their health. Director does not appear to have medical knowledge, or is just not familiar with physician orders. Medications were not administered as directed. The facility is not staffed appropriately with the amount of residents. Many residents were alone with no staff around. I witnessed staff sitting around and speaking about other residents. Highly unprofessional and unethical. Rooms were cleaned daily. There was leftover food in my parents room from the night before. Bugs flying around in and around the room. Despite of personal items being labeled, my parents clothes, personal possessions, walker and cane would end up in other residents rooms. The facility made a strong impression that my parent would be well taken care of. Safe and well cared for. The facility made it impossible and difficult for my parent to adjust. This is supposed to be a memory care facility. Staff is supposed to be trained to handle ALL levels of dementia. They don't! Had I known this, I would have never placed my parent in this facility. I do not recommend this facility with your loved one.
