This is the first place I ate on my recent trip to Chicago. We selected it on impulse during an indecisive period. Seating is outside and inside in what may have been a garage in its other life. The Good: The quality of the ingredients here is genuinely impressive. You can tell they aren't cutting corners on the sourcing. The steak in my burrito today was high-quality, perfectly cooked, and the portion size was massive. The "Live Fire" aspect gives the meat a nice char that suggests a lot of potential. The Not-So-Good: I am reasonably certain there isn't a single grain of salt in the entire kitchen. I'm all for letting the "natural flavors shine," but this goes way beyond subtle--it's aggressively under-seasoned. The steak burrito I had today was begging for even a basic pinch of salt or a hint of cumin/garlic to wake it up. Without seasoning, even the best wood-fired steak ends up tasting flat. The Verdict: It's a shame because the foundation is excellent. If you have a stash of hot sauce or your own salt shaker at home, it's worth the trip for the quality alone. But if you're looking for a meal that's ready to eat and full of flavor out of the wrapper, this might miss the mark for you. read more

Carbon provides an excellent fast casual experience. We ordered at the counter with no wait time and only waited a few minutes for our food to be ready. We chose to eat in one of the booths in the back "patio". The walls were colorful and there were festive string lights across the ceiling. I enjoyed the Mother Clucker chicken burrito immensely. The sauce was sweet and not spicy at all which I liked. The chicken was perfectly grilled with just the right amount of char. The accompanying rice and beans were okay. My dinner companion preferred the barbacoa taco to the fish taco. The fish taco had the same type of sweet sauce that the chicken burrito had so if you don't like sweet, you probably wouldn't like this sauce. The small elote was a very generous serving. The food portions are more than enough. I had eaten at a different location and this one knocked it out the park also. The food was fresh made to order. It's always the little local spots that aim to please and they don't disappoint. I had the steak burrito and it was amazing filled with lots of meat not just the vegetables. I've been a fan of Carbon since about the time they opened their first location in Bridgeport, since we would order from it now and again at work. This location isn't terribly convenient so I rarely visit it--even less since I don't eat out all that often--but we stopped here over the weekend when I wanted Mexican food but something easy. The food was as good as the original location. I always order the chicken burrito, usually with cheese if I remember. Their standard is meat, cilantro, onions, so if you want any add-ons you need to be sure to order it. I always get the roasted red pepper sauce, too, because it is freaking delicious and addictive. Picked up some chips and green salsa, too, and that salsa was spicy! Yum. Carbon also offers catering, which I've had before and it works very well. There's a bit of an annex to this location where you can dine in. The part of the restaurant in which you order is just to hang out and pick up your order. Lots of Uber Eats folks. There's street parking here, and being in West Town it's hard to come by. They have a flashing lights spot and a couple of paid spots in front, I think, but can be chancy. read more

My best friend absolutely loves Carbon, and not the dioxide part. He constantly raves to me about their steak burritos so I knew when the option presented itself, that it was time to try it out for myself. The restaurant itself gives off a very cool hole-in-the-wall kind of vibe. You order food at the counter and it's either brought out to you or taken to go. Either way, it's a small enough place where you shouldn't run into issues with waiting too long. I ordered the Steak Burrito Salad Bowl ($12) since I wanted to up my green intake for the day to counter the deep-fried tortilla bowl that housed the ingredients together. The bowl was enormous and had all the right fillings with lettuce, beans, rice, and salsa. What really sets their food apart if their signature elotes. I had no idea that corn could be this good with a burrito but they blew me away. The steak bowl had some of the juiciest strips of steak I've had in a bowl. They were aromatic and mouth watering to say the least. If I wasn't so hungry at the time, I could have saved a good portion of it for the next day. I've been eating food from Carbon for many years mostly because it's a place my mother really enjoys. Every year for her birthday we get food catered and eat it at the house. So this review is from never actually having eaten in the restaurant, but having food from there many times. The food always comes hot and with all the extras that you would need for whatever Mexican delight you want. Flour and corn tortillas, about 5 different salsas, and my mom orders all the extras too; elite, black beans, rice and more. They give you onions, cilantro, lettuce and cabbage , tomatoes and cheese too. The steak and chicken is grilled and tender and is tasty, but it is hard to say if it would different if they made it for me. It all honesty, I really would have given it a 3 and half stars because it's good, but does not really blow me away. If it wasn't for my mom's obsession with it I would not got out of my way for it. This a cop hot spot! Nearly every time I walk by there is a gaggle of police chillin' inside or parked outside. When I finally made my way in this past week, a bunch of 5-0s were camped out eating, as well. Carbon is a fantastic burrito joint, but not my ideal place for tacos. Their tilapia fish burrito is the best I've had in Chicago. The sauce is creamy and not overpowering, and there is a good amount of shredded cabbage to offset the crunch and flavor of the fish. The tortilla is toasted perfectly..I've ordered this item many times. The steak works in their burritos as well, but on tacos the cuts of meat are too large and not crispy enough to give you perfect bites each time. The salsa verde could have more of a tang or citrus too it. For some reason, their tomatillo sauce is not punchy. Elote i avoid ordering here because it is single kernals instead of clusters and the sauce on it is more runny than my taste would prefer. All-in-all, I highly recommend coming here for the fish burrito, which I give 4 stars for. For tacos or steak, there are better options out there. read more

Nice people and decent place for a quick bite. Went here for lunch the other day. What I don't prefer is the veggie burrito is just driven by the fajita grilled veggies mix. It doesn't have your regular beans, cheese, sir cream, etc. And even though I asked for dinner of the chances while ordering, that didn't end up changing the base of it. The food at Carbon is incredibly delicious and never disappoints. This is one of my favorite counter service restaurants for Mexican food in the city. The Mother Clucker burrito with their signature roasted red pepper sauce is SO GOOD. I can never finish more than half of the burrito and the leftovers reheat nicely. 10/10. Highly recommend! You really can't miss the giant sign to Carbon while walking down Chicago. For having lived in this neighborhood for almost a year, I'm surprised I didn't go here sooner! I got the Chicken Burrito Salad Bowl. It's a hybrid of a burrito bowl and a salad (a mix of the best options of Chipotle and Qdoba, respectively). The bowl was a fried tortilla bowl - super yummy and crunchy. The chicken was tender and flavorful. It is of higher quality than those of the chain restaurants. I was disappointed with the vegetables. By vegetables, I mean corn. And by corn, Carbon means a frozen bag of vegetables mixed with peas and carrots. I'm all for frozen when it comes to corn, but c'mon! I don't know a Mexican place that has peas and carrots with my burrito. Anyway, that's just me being picky. Cooked carrots are the worst. The food was still warm when it arrived which is a pleasant surprise I think for delivery. The steak burrito was the best I have had in Chicago - thus far. I am still on a personal mission to find a great breakfast burrito (coming from Arizona my standards are set high), so I welcome any recommendations. The boy and I got takeout from Carbon last week. He ordered a chicken taco and 2 fish tacos. I ordered the fish burrito. I've had the chicken burrito before and it was delicious. Albeit a bit strange because it had carrots and peas inside. But this time the fish was tasty. A bit dry on the inside, but I loaded it with the extra sauce and hot salsa. This is super close to my best friend's apartment so we picked up some tacos before a night of too much wine. I really enjoyed the tilapia taco-- the sauce that's on it is a little acidic- in a good way!- and goes well with the fish. The beef tenderloin taco was pretty good with the caramelized onions though it was missing something to really bring it to the level of the fish taco. I'm not sure if it costs more than the regular steak taco as they just had it listed on a sheet of paper by the register so I guess it's a special. The chips and guacamole were fine- the guacamole is heavy on the onion flavor which I personally don't mind. It was a little expensive-- a decent sized portion but I would probably skip it next time. I highly recommend the salsa verde which is a solid 'medium' option. I'm sure we'll be back given the location. I will try something else most likely. read more
