Seafood boil
Destination Not Required B.

Bob and his staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Shop is clean and seafood is fresh. We are staying down island, but have made 3 trips here so far to make some amazing shore meals. While there - pick up a locally made pie as well. Whatever you do, however, make sure this family owned shop is on your list. Open year round!

Took a suggestion from an earlier comment in the guest book of our condo and drove out to Carawan' for some steamed shrimp. We asked for extra Old Bay and they were DELICIOUS! Big, plump, tasty and steamed perfectly. If I had known how good these were going to be- I would have packed a cooler full of iced down long necks, a blanket and my wife & I would have had a picnic on the beach. So when in the OBX, get you some Carawans...!!!

Fresh raw oysters

Located right in the Walmart complex next to the Beachwoods Resort where we were staying, we stopped here 3 times in the week we were in the area. Just a small store, typical of a fresh seafood store, with plenty of various fresh and frozen seafood, plus sides, sauces and seasonings. Selection changes almost daily as the fresh catches come in. Also a small selection of local beers. We had scallops, cobia, tuna, halibut, and oysters. They also had various shrimp, trout, mussels and clams. The only thing we didnt like (or dindt like as much as we had hoped) was the fresh shucked oysters, sold in glass about the size of a pint, holding 15-20 (?) oysters. They didnt compare to the oysters in the shell we brought back to the room and shucked -the oysters in the shell were nice and briny, where as the shucked ones were not. Private parking lot out front, enough for about 10 vehicles. Be sure to ask the owners when they have the next selections coming in.

Cooked scallops and shrimp in fradiavolo sauce.

What a great place. It is bright and airy. They do have outdoor seating and even though it was 55…read moredegrees with a 25 mph wind, there were people eating on the deck. Our waiter, Carlos, is great. Smiling, friendly and polite and makes great recommendations. My husband had the fish and chips (salt and vinegar). I had the gumbo and a side of sweet potato fries. So really good. My husband also had the Screwball expresso martini. Wowza!

He was initially warm and as we ordered, asked that he let us know if we inadvertently selected a dish containing pork. The dishes arrived with astonishing speed. The Caesar salad had some unidentified fried object on it and when I asked the waiter, he let me know it was pork rinds. He did not acknowledge that it was an error and flippantly suggested I remove them. I asked for a plate to put them on. The waiter's demeanor turned cold after this (what I considered innocuous) exchange. Regarding the dishes, everything was beautifully presented and arrived hot and fresh at our table. I would not recommend the fried cauliflower as it was very bland with some chili sauce splashed over top. The scallops were very well prepared however. NC Coast is a nice spot for a special meal, especially with the view. Just hope the service is more consistent with other guests.

We just can't handle a big lunch and wanted to avoid leftovers, so decided to split a pickle brined chicken sandwich with fries and an extra side of slaw. The sandwich was OK. To start with it needed more seasoning. How about breaking out the black pepper and garlic powder? The meat was uncharacteristically tough/chewy for chicken breast. I suggest they need to be pounding it to tenderize it and then brine it. It was actually hard for us to cut and eat. It really looked nice, but I think I am done with pickle brined chicken. It just never gets enough brine impact. They make good small caliber fries that were piping hot and the slaw was fine for me. Ms T did not care for it so I got it all. Our food was OK, not stellar. The service was excellent, but I still can't make this better than three stars. I hope to convince her to return for a burger during this trip.
