I went to Dan Smith for my first tattoo, and it was the best experience EVER! I was able to get an appointment pretty fast, which was nice, cause I was worried it would be months and months on a waiting list, but I was happily mistaken. Also, I thought the price was super fair, not only cause it is an amazing quality tattoo, but also cause he is a well known artist. He's super down to earth and clearly knows what he's doing and enjoys it. I wanted a piece done that has a ton of sentimental meaning to me and was an existing design. He was able to take the original piece and make it amazing, still preserving what the image meant to me, but really enhancing the artwork and making it quite beautiful. I personally didn't think it hurt at all, but could have been the location or my excitement about getting my first tattoo. The shop is incredibly clean and has a lot of personality. They play an amazing music selection and everyone is welcoming and friendly. I left wanting to make an appointment for my next tattoo, but will hold off for a few months. I went to Dan Smith because I read that he is amazing with color, and the detailing he did for the color of my tattoo is something I didn't even know could be done. I can not recommend Captured Tattoo more highly. Back in August I had the honor of receiving my first tattoo from Dan Smith. My father passed away back in Feb. '14 and I had wanted to get a tattoo in honor of him for some time. A year later, I had finally settled on what I had wanted to do, and set out in search of an artist pouring over portfolios. To my disappointment (and frankly, luck) many artists in Hollywood, Redondo Beach and Pasadena flat out refused to meet to do a consultation with me prior to getting my tattoo, saying they were 'too busy', most just said 'show up with a photo and get the tattoo the same day, any questions can be answered just prior to getting your tattoo.' When I asked a few basic questions, most couldn't be bothered to deal with me. Since it was my first venture, I really wanted an artist that cared about a tattoo virgin! I remembered Dan's incredible work from LA Ink, and when I found out he had his own shop in Tustin, just a mile away from where my father lived and died, I know it sounds cheesy but it seemed like fate. That was confirmed for me when I asked Alison (she's amazing!) if Dan could meet with me prior to getting the tattoo, and she said 'Absolutely, he'll be happy to answer any questions you have." I made an appointment for a consult, and when I met with him, he couldn't have been nicer or more caring. We sat and spoke for about 45 minutes, I gave him the image I wanted to use, he asked if it was my first tattoo and when he found out the reason why I wanted to get it, he explained the entire process, gave me his expertise in what would make the image look best and answered every single, silly question I had with sincere understanding and compassion. I made my appointment and before I returned to Captured a few weeks later, had several emails back and forth with Alison with more questions and a few last minute ideas, which were answered with no qualms. When I showed up, Dan had the image ready for me, made a few quick tweaks based on what was best for where I wanted to put it (back of my left shoulder) and he went to work. Needless to say, I was a little nervous, but Dan gave me his full attention, put me at ease, helping me to get comfortable, talking to me about my dad and what the image represented, and he told me every step of the way what kind of feeling to expect with the different needles for outlining and shading. In just under two hours, he was done, I think he was even surprised at how well my skin took the ink, hardly any irritation. I honestly thought it would hurt more and take longer, but I was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. The act of doing it was cathartic, as I was still mourning my father, and when I saw the finished work, I burst into tears. Dan "captured" every feeling I had and put it into the tattoo, and the fact that he cared enough to find out about me and why I wanted it made the experience one of the best of my life. I never before understood the power of a tattoo and how it can help you through something, and I now know why my husband always told me, 'If you want to get a tattoo, wait until you have something that really means something to you, it'll make all the difference in the world in your experience.' The image I had done is something my father and I shared a love for and having that represented permanently on my body is an honor. The shop itself is amazing, spotless, it's a relaxed atmosphere, the staff is professional and friendly and more than willing to answer any questions you have at any time. I feel so honored to have been tattooed at Captured and by Dan, I hope he knows how many people he touches deeply with his amazing artwork and dedication to his profession. Great shop, very clean and comfortable atmosphere. This is a new shop with great decor and is located in a renovated easily accessible area in downtown Tustin. I met with the shop manager Allison who was amazing and explained the shops process and the different artists and made me feel very comfortable. After looking through reviews and the artists books I decided to get some work done by Griffen. Griffen has far exceeded my expectations. He did a great job with very clean lines and shading. He took time to make sure everything was exactly the way I wanted it. I received an email from them, checking on my healed tattoo and thanking me for coming in. I'd like to share my response: Hello all, I must say I was so surprised to receive this email. So surprised in fact, I had to write back. Although I have several tattoos (most of which you cannot see when I am clothed) I came into the shop for a tiny letter "A" on my ankle. I was referred by my boyfriend who is currently working with Dan on his leg (who was referred by my sister who has also had work done by Dan). I called and the darling girl who answered scheduled me with Shaun the next day. He was kind and very patient while I decided on a font. Shaun suggested a lower case "a", something I never considered and drew it up in a millisecond... it instantly struck a cord and he tattooed me shortly after. I recently lost a dear friend and this "A" although silly and unoriginal, means more to me than any other piece on my body... go figure. I never feel the need to explain why I am getting something permanently marked on my body, but he asked and I felt very much at ease. I had the fortunate opportunity to get my third Dan Smith tattoo and it was well worth the wait. As always Dan is a master of shading and using the skin's natural color to blend into the tattoo. The staff is professional and friendly. Captured has always been very clean and sanitary. Once your appointment begins you have Dan's (or whichever specific artist you made the appointment with) full attention and they really want you involved as much as you can be in the decision and design process. Leading up to the appointment you will have the ability to send and email or two back and forth outlining your idea so Dan or whoever the artist is can wrap their heads around it. Then possibly you give them more details or alter the initial idea. Once there you can have an idea stenciled on your body and if something needs to be changed they are more than happy to make you happy. They are very good at what they do so taking their advice on certain things is recommended. There is no question you will have a relaxed and enjoyable experience!! They rock! read more

Man, I have been wanting a tattoo in neo-trad and this place can deliver. The dude at the desk, I forgot his name, is super helpful and friendly. The tattoo artist I got my work from today, Chris, is mad talented and patient. I told him a brief description of what I wanted, a death head moth, and he did a killer job at designing it. I am not going to lie, I was a bit worried when I left the shop that it might not look as I have envisioned. I left my trust in his artistic talent and was stoked as soon as he showed me the piece. Even though I did not finish the tattoo after the shading, this being the first tattoo I tapped out, the line work was clean and the placement was in a good spot for the size. It was worth 2-3 hour drive from where I live, LA traffic got me on the way back. The tattoo-covered the calf down to a few inches above the Achilles. It was $400 and I feel satisfied with the price. There is a $100 deposit to book in an appointment just in case you decide to bail. I am definitely booking more work with Chris. Next is the other calf. read more
