5 stars for the 5 star experience that you will get if you decide to spend some time at Captured Tattoo! We went in to Captured Tattoo back in December with a concept for Beau, one of the most amazing tattoo artists ever. He was able to take a complicated concept (the blending of 3 heritages) and make it into the most gorgeous art. The process went like this: **We paid $100 as a deposit for a design and described what we wanted via email **We came into the cool, clean shop (more on this later) and Beau showed us a sketch on paper. We had some notes and he went in the back, adjusted and then came back **Then the first session was on. Beau used the sketch as a template for my husband's arm and laid down the main structure in about 3 hours. It looked awesome and before he sent us on our way he was careful to advise about cleaning & care. **Subsequent sessions followed every couple weeks to add shading and texture. **And now it's all done and is the most amazing, intricate, meaningful piece of body art I have ever seen Everyone at the shop is incredibly nice and the store front itself, nestled in the cutest area of old town Tustin is awesome. There is a little bench where I sat while my husband's work was being done on a table in the center of the room and they have a water station. I can't say enough good things about this shop and the people who work there, very welcoming and receptive. The shop is spotless and very well taken care of, very hygienic. I scheduled a consultation with Dan and we worked together to come up with some ideas. I had some ideas but after talking with Dan we decided on something else, he used his 20+ years of experience and roughly 10,000 different tattoos to explain in detail why something would look off or "weird" It's a true sign of a professional to help guide you in making a permanent decision, rather than just accepting work as it comes even if it's not ideal Thank you Dan, Tyler and everyone else at Captured for such an awesome experience read more

I hate to do this but Im sitting in the parking lot needed to write this somewhere. Had an appointment at 4pm today (December 30th). I showed up at 3:45 to locked doors. I called multiple times, knocked, emailed, even direct message on instagram. Its currently 4:34pm and I have received zero response. I paid the deposit for the appointment yet the store is completely closed. Im upset this has even happened because I was so excited to get my forearm done. I waited for thirty minutes in the rain in front of the shop waiting for someone to open the door or something but nothing happened. I really just want an answer back. read more

Shaun has done both of my tattoos. The first one was a fixer upper and he did a beautiful job! He fixed all the lines and made them straight. He brightened up my ugly black tattoo and made it into something new! My second tattoo was an anchor and he came up with an awesome original design which turned out great! He has the best line work and color theory! All of the artists are very polite and truly care about your needs! I've never felt so comfortable! I won't go anywhere else. Shaun is the best!!! I had a great experience getting my tattoo at Captured by Shaun Topper. I did a great amount of research on artists prior to my choice and I'm glad I did. My basis of artist comes from the detail work that they can do along with how well they are able to tattoo a portrait (although I did not get a portrait). I was following Shaun on IG prior and really admired his work. After looking at everyone's work at Captured, I would trust any of their artist with my skin. They are all that great. The shop is extremely clean, is classy and well put together, and has some great flash all over the walls to distract you from the sting. Prior to my visit, I emailed a photo of what I wanted done. Shaun had my design all drawn out and ready when I arrived. I made a last minute decision to place the tattoo on my forearm instead of my upper arm and he didn't bat a lash and made sure it would work there, which it did. In the end, the tattoo came out beautifully and he finished quicker than I expected. It has been a few days since I received it, is in the middle if healing but I've been getting nice complements so far. My mom just got a tattoo elsewhere a few weeks ago and said she was jealous of mine. The price was a little more than I thought it would be but I actually don't mind since it is top quality and will be on my body forever. I highly recommend Captured along with all of their artists and I'm sure I'll be back in a couple months to work on something else! read more

I have had the pleasure/honor of being tattooed at Captured Tattoo by Dan Smith twice. Both experiences were amazingly positive. The shop is gorgeous with amazing art/flash covering the walls. Dan is a magnificent artist with amazing energy and talent. He goes above and beyond to make his clients feel comfortable plus he is an interesting guy to chat with. For both tattoos, I sent him ideas of what I wanted and he took those basic concepts created beautiful original pieces incorporating exactly what I was looking for with his artist twist. Do I recommend Dan and Captured Tattoo? Heck yes!!! I'm willing to drive 4 hours just to get tattooed by Dan if that tells you anything. read more

The minute I walked in to this shop I knew I had picked the right spot for my 2nd tattoo. I was referred to this place by a friend (thank you). Allison was super nice and informative. She had answers for all my concerns. I had already communicated with her via email when I set up my appt and paid my deposit. Griffen my artist took time out his schedule to speak with me when I came in to check out the shop a couple a days prior to my appt. The day of my appt things went super well, I had emailed Griffen a few pics of what I wanted. He walked out with a drawing and it was perfect! The size was perfect, I couldn't picture it in color but trusted he would do his magic and HE DID! I am so in love with my butterfly! He surpassed my expectations! I'm not gonna lie it hurt like hell, but it was so worth the pain! I will most definitely return to get one more piece by Griffen. This place rocks!!! I cannot recommend Captured Tattoo highly enough. My friend and I had the most positive experience working with them. We both made an appointment with Dan, the owner, who is seriously one of the best tattoo artists in the business. The entire process was easy for us -- Dan and Tyler were very warm, welcoming, accommodating, and patient with us as we zeroed in on the design we wanted. As expected, Dan delivered in spades and we're both thrilled with the tattoos we got. And after seeing the other artists in action at Captured Tattoo, I have to say I'd trust every one of them to do great work. The whole shop is stacked. The best tattoo experience I've had. Been following Dan for awhile and wanted to get a piece done at his shop while I was in town. From the appointment inquiry to the time I left the shop, I couldn't have been happier with the ease and efficiency of hospitality (thank you, Tyler). I thought I knew what I had wanted exactly, but Shaun threw out a couple of suggestions from the beginning and along the way on what he thought would work. Dan Smith is an incredible artist. He takes time to listen to your ideas and wants (style, color, imagery, etc.) and creates something personal and beautiful. This was my first tattoo and honestly the experience couldn't have been better. I was extrenely nervous, but that quickly disappeared because of the professionalism and hospitality of Dan and Tyler. Wow. First off, their customer service is unmatched. I guess I was expecting such a well known shop to take their time writing back to me but that's just not the case at all. I had many questions and Tyler was there every step of the way answering every question I had for him and in a very timely manner. Even afterwards, I called asking about aftercare instructions and was so informative and really took his time to help me out. Everyone here was incredibly polite and warm. They made it all so very easy. Dan Smith is such an amazing guy. So unbelievably talented. I gave him a simple idea and he ran with it and gave me the most beautiful tattoo I've ever seen. I feel so incredibly lucky to have this art on me forever. Not to mention that meeting him was nothing less than I thought it would be. He's so warm and more than willing to listen to every little thing I had to say and ask him about. He's very genuine and has a calming way about him. Can't give this place more of an awesome review! It was a last minute choice, like many tattoos are, to go get something done today. Given the current Covid situation, I was doubtful they would be open or available. They were open just as the website said they would be, and allowed me to walk in and receive service within five minutes. Took my temperature at the door, asked me to wipe down my ID and my phone, super sanitary! Not only that, but Dan had the lightest touch I've ever received on any of my other tattoos over the past 15 years. That's saying a lot, considering the tattoo I got was behind my ear. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for high-quality work. You have just earned a customer for life! read more

Amazing!!! My first tattoo and this shop completely exceeded my expectations!!! Friendly staff that is so welcoming and will answer all your first time answers. This is where you go when you want a tattoo that you will love and everyone else will admire. Each artist in here is amazing and you can't go wrong with any of them. I have a beautiful piece by Beaux Brady who is a super nice and super talented guy. Just make an appointment beforehand, or give a call because with this much heat out of that shop they're usually all booked up. Established in 2013.

After spending four years in Hollywood at Kat Von D's High Voltage Tattoo, and extensive international and US travel tattooing and touring with his band, The Dear & Departed, Dan Smith returns to Orange County to found his own appointment-only tattoo studio in scenic Old Town Tustin. Since opening in April 2013, talents Shaun Topper and Beau Brady have come on board at the shop and are also available by appointment. In addition to tattoos from some of the finest artists in the industry, the shop also offers a selection of custom apparel, prints, books and more.

Meet the Business Owner: Dan S.

Born in England and raised in New Zealand, Dan Smith has chosen Southern California as the place he calls home. Dan originally moved to Orange County in 2004, and spent four years traveling extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad. In 2008 Dan began working in Hollywood at Kat Von D's High Voltage Tattoo. In 2009 Dan joined the cast of TLC's LA Ink, and was a featured cast member throughout the third and fourth seasons of the program. After the culmination of the show in 2011, Dan continued tattooing at High Voltage until the end of 2012. In 2013 Dan left High Voltage to establish Captured Tattoo in scenic Old Town Tustin in Orange County, California.

However, my boyfriend was present during the appointment and heard the conversation firsthand. The comments about me needing to lose weight were made at least 5 times, which is why they made me uncomfortable. I also found the owner's use of the term "extra flesh" in his public response to be unprofessional and reflective of the concerns raised in my original review. Never once did I mention "extra flesh" so you see they literally body shame even publicly. I stand by my experience. While my piercing healed well with the titanium jewelry I selected, the repeated comments about my body and the pressure I felt to purchase more expensive jewelry are the reasons I chose not to return. -------- I originally booked an appointment here because they operate by appointment only. However, I was surprised to learn that both appointments and deposits are cash only. In a time when most businesses accept cards, Apple Pay, and other digital payment methods, this felt unnecessarily inconvenient. During my visit, I decided to get my belly button pierced. Unfortunately, the experience left a negative impression. Throughout the appointment, the piercer an Asian lady repeatedly commented that I needed to lose weight. These remarks were unsolicited, unprofessional, and made me uncomfortable. For context, I am 5'3" and approximately 123 pounds. Regardless of anyone's size or personal fitness goals, customers should not have to listen to repeated comments about their body during a piercing appointment. I came in for a service, not for criticism about my appearance. After that experience, I decided I would not return. Another issue I had was the constant pressure to purchase more expensive jewelry. I specifically requested titanium jewelry because I had researched it beforehand and wanted an option that is commonly recommended for sensitive skin. Despite this, I felt repeatedly pushed toward more expensive alternatives and was told I would be more likely to experience problems if I chose titanium. In my case, that was not true. My piercing healed without infection, and I was happy with my choice. Six months later, once my piercing had fully healed, I wanted to upgrade my jewelry and visited Platinum Ink Tattoo & Piercing. The difference in customer service was night and day. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and professional. They answered my questions without judgment, made me feel comfortable, and provided a much more positive experience overall. I was also surprised to find that both their piercing services and jewelry were approximately half the price of what I had been quoted at Eddie's. On top of that, Platinum Ink accepts multiple forms of payment, including credit cards and Apple Pay, and they welcome walk-ins, making the entire process much more convenient. I cannot speak to the quality of the tattoo work here since I only received a piercing. However, based on my personal experience, I would choose Platinum Ink Tattoo & Piercing without hesitation. Customer service, professionalism, and making clients feel comfortable should be a priority, and unfortunately that was not my experience here.

I love how they don't just eyeball it but actually measure and draw out lines to figure out placement. Loved how all of em came out. Despite my efforts to keep them happy, I've had two incidents since where i was genuinely concerned that the only solution would be to take it out cuz that's all i saw online. I was so relieved when eddie informed me it'd be possible to save it (not a guarantee tho) using an extension bar and thank goodness it worked cuz both are completely fine now. I doubt i would still have em if i went anywhere else bout the issues i had. He is always rly prompt with responding on ig which I rly appreciate, especially when I had concerns. I first came here to get my tragus and third lobe piercings, and as someone who's really particular bout things like placement and symmetry, I got reassurance seeing Ayan measure and line up the placement of my third lobe piercings. Seeing how in depth they do even lobe piercings, I was confident in coming here and only here for back dermals. He did my friend's tragus piercing and my dual lobe piercings. I haven't been pierced since I was a baby, but Lucas made the whole experience real easy. Overall, he's a super chill guy that makes an effort to strike up a conversation and make you feel comfortable about the whole process. Other than the fleeting hot sensation from the initial pinch, the process was pretty painless. Bonus: we got some sick stickers featuring his bull dog Everyone we met at the shop was friendly, knowledgable, and professional. Their website is also a fantastic resource in case you don't ask all of your questions about healing in-person. My friend and I truly felt like we were in great hands so kudos to everyone for setting such an easygoing vibe. I've been back a few times since January for a quick monthly check and to get my piercings downsized recently. As expected, I was met with top-tier customer service, true to the shop's personal brand. I feel confident coming back for future piercings. Lastly, if you're downsizing - I highly recommend making an appointment. I was in and out (no more than 15 minutes), but I was surrounded by 4+ walk ins. It's really easy to do so over their website vs. calling.

This shop is THE BEST! I had been wanting a tattoo for awhile and had been researching all over for the best tattoo artists. Living in a small town, its best to know that traveling to get a tattoo done is incredibly worth it. After doing a ton of research I finally decided to try to book an appointment with Dan Smith. The process was very easy, the staff is awesome especially the lovely assistant Alison, she got back to me in a timely manner and was incredibly helpful. Once i took the trip to LA the shop blew me away. It looked really nice inside and everyone was friendly. This tattoo being my first big piece done I was nervous, but once Dan showed me what he drew i was amazed! He is such a gentlemen and his work absolutely exceeds expectations. It ended up being more than I imagined. He took his time and really cared about the colors and made sure it was exactly what I wanted. It took a whole four hours but the time passed relatively quickly watching all the other artists tattooing as well! It was by far the best experience I could ever have. I had a great first experience at Captured Tattoo! First, Alison quickly helped me set up an appointment with Griffen Gurzi to get my old tattoo covered up. Immediately after I got into their shop I could tell that it was an extremely professional and clean environment which was definitely a great thing. My experience getting tattooed by Griffen was also great. He's a chill, laid-back, friendly guy who definitely has some great art skills. He was also really helpful with picking out a design that would look good and also cover up my previous tattoo. He was also able to fit me into his schedule the next day after my consultation, which was great! Overall great shop, definitely recommend to everyone! Finally got a chance to travel from Monterrey Mexico to California just to get a tattoo by Dan Smith. I have to say that it was worth every penny! Since the day i emailed the shop to book an appointment Skully was super nice and quick to respond. Dan was very nice too and made the whole tattoo process an amazing experience. So I walk in at 11am and am greeted and told it'll be an aprox 2 hour wait- again- no problem. This is to be expected. I get my name down and leave for a few hours and come back. I let the guy greeting everyone know multiple times that I wanted a full-color tattoo. I wait another hour and am seated with an artist. Upon being seated I notice that he has mostly black and grey art posted. I remind him that I expected a full-color tattoo and he let me know that he doesn't do color. Hey, no big deal. I wouldn't force someone to do something they're not comfortable with. So the guy from the front apologizes and says it'll be another 45 minutes until another artist is ready. (I should have just cut my losses at this point). So it's closing in on another hour and dude let's me know another artist can actually take me. Fantastic! Well I sat there for another 20 minutes, while the new artist consulted (flirted) with two women on what they wanted. Never greeted me. Never asked what I wanted done. Completely ignored me even though I was the next client. At this point I politely stood up and walked out. I heard so many good things about this shop so I'm honestly just shocked and disappointed by the customer service and priorities of this shop.
