Quick, easy and fun place to stop. Very convenient especially with two kids under 2. Zero wait and God food.

Great grilled hotdogs! The cheese fries were great. Only concern was some of the food preps don't wear gloves.

Tried Capt'n Franks a few years ago based on the recommendation of a coworker. I wish I had ignored his recommendations! Staff was rude (they had a line of customers out the door and kept complaining about the door being open, and one employee made the comment "close the door, we're not trying to cool down the whole damn beach!") and very unfriendly (they had the attitude that they did not want to be there, nor wait on customers), while the food was subpar and overpriced. Based upon reading recent reviews, I see nothing has really changed. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

What a fun place! Great dogs and cheese fries. Stopped in for a quick lunch before hitting jockeys ridge and had fast friendly service.

We were very unimpressed with our experience here. The hotdogs were just regular hotdogs with sloppy, soggy toppings. I guess we were expecting something better and more unique after seeing all of the great reviews. We paid $20 for 2 hotdogs, a few fries (and by a few fries, I mean it was literally a few french fries), and 2 sodas. We left wondering why we just paid $20 for nothing really. Food is good not spectacular. Staff needs improvement.I go there for lunch at times with a coworker and Ive heard inappropriate talk between the staff loud enough for customers to hear and honestly some are dressed inappropriate . Not somewhere I would bring my kids or folks for a quick lunch. read more

This hot dog place has an item on the menu that brings us back every year. Don't get me wrong, the hot dogs and onion rings are tasty, but Capt'n Frank's steamed spiced shrimp meal is terrific. You get either a half or full pound of steamed shrimp, done in several styles (OBX style is classic Old Bay), tangy Cole slaw, drawn butter, cocktail sauce, and a basket of little hush puppies that are only slightly sweet. The shrimp are not the little ones, but the medium size. We were seated upstairs and in the sea breeze...perfect to polish off some really excellent shrimp. Servers are busy delivering hot dogs to families, but they are quick to refill glasses and take good care of couples, as well. Go and order the shrimp. We do year after year!!! read more

Best place to eat at the Outer Banks. Great service and great food. Can not find a place that serves hotdogs and shrimp this good.

Stopped in for a mid week late lunch. We tried the 'snap dog' which is a natural casing with a beef and pork blend rather than the all beef Oscar Meyer regular dogs. I must say that was not a good choice...there wasn't much snap and the blend of meat was mediocre at best. The chili is good and the bun tasted fresh. I noticed when paying the check that the hush puppies and chicken tenders were in bags in a glass front freezer behind the counter. The iced tea tasted stale although there is a tea maker so it might be the brand of tea but not good southern sweet tea that is best when freshly made. I have had the regular dogs in the past and they are OK and the French fries are not fresh cut. read more

We had a great time here at dinner. The food was great; the shrimp is world famous-worthy. Our server, Matt, was incredibly friendly. This was our best dinning experience during our week in the Outer Banks, glad it was on our last full day so we went out on a high note! We loved the history of the place. It had a lot of photos of the place through the years. The contrast between the earliest photos and the current highly developed area was very interesting. We stop every year when we come down to visit OBX. It is our first stop no matter what, even before we check in our cottage! Love them and not only are their dogs the best they have the best fountain drinks ever! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! read more

Food has gone downhill. Chili on the hot dogs did not even taste like chili. Chicken Tenders were overcooked as well. A large drink is almost the same size as a small. Over priced for the quality of food you receive. Will not be returning anytime soon. Terribly disappointed. read more

Capt'n Franks is a must have when we come to the OBX. We usually go a couple times in a weeks vacay! The flavors are great, lots of different dogs to choose from, fries are yummy and always stacked high! The decor is awesome. I love all the pics of the Outer Banks from the 70s, 80s, 90s! Such classic place ! The staff is always friendly and very welcoming. Indoor and outdoor seating is a plus as well! Get there early cuz they close at 3!! read more

As long as your expectations are appropriate, this is a great hot dog place. The kids loved the noisy, colorful atmosphere, the food was fine but seriously, it's hot dogs. There's only so much you can do to make them wonderful. The corn dogs were great, however, and I wanted one for myself. And the children's chicken nuggets were actually fantastic, though def not low fat. They were tender and perfectly breaded and I recommend them! The line moved fast and they run a pretty tight ship. Anytime I am able to make it to the Outer Banks on an East Coast visit, I make it a priority to go to Cap'n Franks. This place has been bulging my belly since high school for cheap. Busy walls and classic arcade games help make the little hot dog counter a lively place. I recommend the Junk Yard Dog and cheese fries. You can't go wrong. They also make a great hamburger and buckets of delicious peelers if dogs aren't your thing. Cheap, ice cold bottled beers help finish off a very reasonably priced meal. Nostalgia may help bump this to 5 stars, but I love the place. read more

This is a good place for lunch and to bring the Kids. I had a pulled pork sandwich, my wife had a fish sandwich, my daughter had fried chicken fingers and my son had hot dogs. The food was very good. I will come here again with my family. You wont be disappointed. read more

Local eatery older than I am! Love that it's still a family run local business, in its 2nd generation of ownership! and although I don't eat hot dogs much anymore, will always make it a point to support this local establishment. They must be great employers too, as they have the same staff which sticks around for many years. I get the fried chicken sandwich with cheese & pickles, and a side of cheese fries (order them with the cheese in the side!) My family loves the steamed shrimp, and we eat outdoors during the summer. Love that we can ride bikes here and that one of the Hess's (owners) are always present. Say hi to HARVEY next time you're there! Capt Franks is an Outer Banks icon in its own rite, your family will be happy with a local, quick, fast bite. They do have lines in the summer during lunch hour, but will roll through with a pad and take orders so you don't end up waiting very long. read more

For a random stop, this wasn't bad! The prices aren't too bad, $2.50 for a hot dog with sauerkraut and mustard. You could get a meal for around $5-$6 and leave satisfied. They're friendly and very fast. You can order your food, and before you sit down its ready. read more

Took a day trip down from Newport News, VA and was looking for a Shrimp Po' Boy. Stopped and asked from a couple of places and was guided to Capt Franks. Went inside & asked if I could get two Shrimp Po'Boys and I was told "yes, and how would you like those cooked?" My husband and I were extremely pleased! They were cooked exactly the way we wanted and very tasty! I would recommend Capt Franks to all my friends & family. Thank you for a great sandwich! read more

I must be strange. Had a foot long with chili, cheese, onions and mustard. My comment, was "yep, taste just like a hot dog". Nothing special to me. Dog was too skinny, not enough chili. Don't see the big deal. Positive--good service. I guess I'm just a burger person. read more
