Well we stopped in here for lunch on a spur of the moment kind of thing. We were very disappointed. We had a tuna melt...how hard is that? The bacon was raw, the chips were soggy, and I ate the tuna out of the sandwich. What does that tell you?? I will say the wait staff was great. The french dip sandwich that my wife had was basically deli meat with juice on it. Flavor was aok. Anyway, i do not know why this place is so busy. Maybe because it is the only choice in the area. My family brought me to Captains Place. As I enjoy all things marine , as you enter the restaurant, there is a very good example of marine knots.My first time at Captains Place and it did not disappoint. My family members started with the appetizer of the small clams in sauce dish and for main dish, had different types of cod fish dishes. I opted for the fish n chips. The dishes were served hot and delicious . The fish batter was light , not greasy and delicious with ample portions . I recommend Captains Place for their Portuguese American cuisine with good service and ample portions, as well. We randomly ended up in this area, in need of somewhere to eat lunch. Captain's hit the spot. We were pleasantly surprised with our food. We all ordered either the fish sandwich or chicken sandwich. They were all served hot and the bread tasted like it was just baked. The fries looked different but tasted really good too. 2 weeks in a row we ordered and were disappointed. However I will give credit where due. Yesterday's order was clam chowder and baked stuffed shrimp. The chowder was good with lots of clam and small potatoe pieces in a thick creamy stock. The fries were homemade a nice touch, but full of burnt charcoal like pieces from not skimming the fryer between orders. Not very appealing visually or taste wise. The shrimp were nice jumbos split and cooked well but the reason for this order was because the previous week my wife's baked stuffed shrimp had the most incredible stuffing mix I've ever been served with this dish from anywhere. This weeks stuffing was different. It had the same ample seafood and spices mix but was mushy and over loaded with hot sauce. To much hot sauce overwhelmed the rest and made the stuffing soggy and unpleasant. My previous weeks prime rib dinner had a fantastic mixture of seasoning and perfect outer sear but I like(and ordered) my meat cooked medium. Done on the outside pink in the center. What I got was rare!! Raw uncooked thick steak bleeding and completely unacceptable. It was only seared a 1/32" on the outside and raw all the way through. While service is prompt and courteous, the mis cooked meals and inconsistent textures made our experience less than appealing. After spending 100.00 for take out with tip for 2 meals, no deserts or drinks I feel ripped off. Will never do business again. Oh and thanks for the nasty lemon slices I distinctly said not to put on our food. Yuck! I'm stupid for tipping you well before checking. read more

I'm not sure if I can consider myself a regular here, however I have visited for food and drinks about a half a dozen times in the past 5 months, and will not be going again. I dropped by for a quick lunch on a Tuesday afternoon with another girlfriend of mine who IS a regular. We sat ourselves in the dining room by the fish tanks, not much of an atomosphere but surely I would have returned regardless of that, until we were waited on. The restaurant was not very busy at all, about 5 tables had people and the bar was about half empty. It was approx 2pm. We had the most extremely rude and irritated waitress ever. This is NOT the first time this waitress has been rude. An older lady, I do know her name but I will refrain, and I will also say I have had several pleasant experiences with other waitresses at this establishment, but ALWAYS treated rudely by this same woman. I suppose if they want more business they should pay closer attention to how their customers are being treated by certain staff. We were asked if we wanted drinks. I asked for a drink that this particular waitress knew myself and another regular customer (name mentioned) always get. She looked at me like I had 2 heads, but then told me the correct name of the drink. I shrugged it off. She came back with my friends drink and stated she didn't have one item of the drink but could use *this* instead. I said no problem. This was a raspberry chocolate martini made with godiva (darker) instead of another mix which was clear. No problem. The drink came back looking like rusty water and tasting like whiskey. NOT what I expected OR ordered. Now for the food order. We both decided to go with chicken caesar salads and asked for bread on the side. She stated matter of factly that bread did NOT come with salad but she could bring us a loaf of it. *blink* I have always been offered bread at this restaurant upon being greeted with placemats and silverware, and I have never been "charged" extra for bread that didn't come with a certain meal. 10 minutes went by and our waitress returned to the table to advise that they were out of romaine lettuce (which happens). She offered "regular lettuce" with caesar dressing. I agreed, my girlfriend opted for kale soup instead. About 20 minutes passed and our food came. My salad ended up having onions and tomatoes on it, which I do not recall asking for on my wannabe caesar salad, and no croutons. She THEN again stated to me, "what kind of dressing would you like?" I said caesar and she disappeared again. Mind you we had to ask again for a loaf of bread in between. At the same time a table of 3 gentleman got 2 loafs of bread (I don't recall hearing them ask for it) and their 3 salad plates, 2 full bottles of salad dressing, returning her to the table THREE times (hands full) and then asking if there was anything else she could get. At this point I am STILL waiting for my dressing. She returned to the table to ask "how is everything" and I peered at her and advised that I was waiting on my dressing. My friend was half way thru her bowl of soup, which she said was good (without crackers). She never said sorry just flew from the table and came back with a tiny sauce cup with dressing in it for my huge salad. The food was overall good, fresh, and at the proper temperatures. Before we got the bill my friend asked to have separate checks. She rolled her eyes at her and said, "you should've told me that BEFORE you ordered!" My friend and I just looked at eachother in disbelief with her tone. She never came back to the table except to drop the bill. This is THE very first time I have left a zero tip, and I am ALWAYS a generous tipper. I'm sorry, Captains, but you lost a few valued customers and their friends. read more

This is definitely not the first place to go to for Portuguese, especially in the New Bedford vicinity, but it certainly is not the worse decision you could make. The location of Captain's Place is actually pretty good right down the road from the Acushnet Avenue, and it won't be very hard to find it considering its at the very top of the street. The bar looks like it was actually full, especially because it was a Monday night. The dining room, right off of the bar side, only divided by a small half-wall, is pretty eh and boring. The neutral walls and the awkwardly placed fish tanks are just a bit off-putting. The menu, full of fish, chicken, salads, sandwiches, and other Portuguese restaurant regulars, was extensive and very reasonably priced. My father got Chicken Marsala, while my brother got Shrimp Alfredo and a cacoila sandwich myself. According to my father, the chicken was good, but the unnecessary noodles that came with it were downright disgusting. Who puts noodles in chicken Marsala anyway? My brothers Shrimp Alfredo looked good, and he said it tasted just as well. My cacoila sandwich was a bit odd to me because I'm used to shredded cacoila, not blocky portions of it. But otherwise, the cocoila, pop bread and fries were filling and tasty. The bill came out to only 30 bucks with a soup and extra bread and drinks. In all, Captain's Place is worth trying. Don't let everything fool you. read more

We figured when you know you are going to get a good meal somewhere and it is close and everyone treats you like family then why go anywhere else. Actually going tonight. Got take-out from here a few times. Decent food, cheap prices good portions. The plates I saw at other people's tables looked delicious. Tip: If you want a steak sandwich, get the shish-kabob sandwich. It's a deal for six bucks. I always enjoy going to Captain's. It's a friendly atmosphere, with reasonably priced delicious food and drinks. Steak Mozambique is my favorite on the menu, as is the chicken, broccoli, ziti. This is where I go for dates and gatherings with my best friends. The drinks are perfect, the seafood is the best, and the meats are fantastic. I've eaten their steaks, rabbit, chicken, paella, mussels, lobster, etc. I've tried almost everything on the menu. Never have I been disappointed. What can I say, other than the Captain's Table is worth the trip as a destination spot! Going to Plymouth Rock or Cape Cod becomes secondary, that's how good the food and the folks are (and that includes both the staff and the local customers.) The first time I went I was alone on a Sunday night, after an exhausting day of driving and scoping out a place to stay for our vacation. I sat at the bar, ordered a fabulous 2 1/2 pound broiled lobster (at a terrific price for $29.95) and was instantly made to feel like a regular customer. We went back several times while on vacation, and every dish was huge and superb. The paella and the grilled octopus at $18.95 are not to be missed. This is real authentic Portuguese cuisine, lovingly prepared and served, and very reasonably priced for the freshness and portions you get. read more

We came here while in New Bedford and we were quite impressed. The food = amazing! We ordered the Calamari for an appetizer which is the best I've ever tasted. My girlfriend ordered the Shrimp Moçambique which was great, her sister had the Stuffed Shrimp which was phenomenal, and I kept it simple ordering the Mussels with Garlic Over Pasta. Needless to say, everything was great with good service that followed. Apparently, we had some good timing because we got there right before the place got packed. The menu options seem endless so it's hard to choose what you'd like. I would definitely recommend this place if you're a fan of seafood. read more

Open dining area with about 20 tables plus a bar. The place was recently renovated so I expected better decor. Was pretty busy for a Sunday afternoon both the dining room and the bar. The staff could have been friendlier. We ordered the chourico bombeiro, salad and the clams in white wine. The food was good, fairly priced and nice portions. We haven't been to many Portuguese restaurants, but that was not a problem because we had an outstanding, professional waitress named Nella who was happy to help with answering all our questions and explaining each dish in detail; this woman was the best waitress we have had in a few years. We also liked that the owner was there and introduced himself to us, as well as greeting every guest there that night. This is not a fancy restaurant, but it is very clean, has a large of variety of dishes, the staff is outstanding, and it's a good value. The food was very good and fresh, like home-made, and the portions were generous. We are definitely going back to Captain's Place! read more

If I had a Portuguese grandmother she would have loved it here. The atmosphere was old with a fake aquarium wall and old dark woodwork.There was a small bar to the side with a couple of locals there for lunch. The first table we sat at had a rickety chair so we moved. Most of the conversations we overheard were Portuguese and the menu had a large variety of seafood and Portuguese items on it as well. One of the specials was Kale soup so I decided to try that and it was delicious! The waitress brought us plenty of fresh bread to go with it. My mom tried the carrot soup and she loved that as well. You can tell it was homemade. For lunch we both ordered a fish sandwich which was served plain on a Portuguese roll with hand cut french fries. I had to send it back because the fish wasn't cooked all the way and the fries were underdone. Once we got the food cooked properly it was very tasty with generous portions for a decent price.So overall not great atmosphere but the food was good once it was cooked right you can tell it was homemade and fresh. read more

What a meal! My wife and went in early, just opened and decided to have lunch. I had liver and onions and she had a steak. I am very fussy about liver and onions and therefore was skeptical. When it came it was beyond my expectations. Cooked to perfection and dropped on a layer of rice. The cuts of liver they used were tender and fresh. Very impressive meal. My wife had a delicious steak and it arrived cooked exactly the way she requested. If these two meals are indicative of what they put out, we'll be back. It was definitely 5 stars. read more

Was excited to find a new resteraunt until we were seated. First the air conditioning unit was dripping all over me, so we asked to change tables, then we were bombarded by a million fruit flies. They were all over the bread, in and on our drinks, and bouncing off of our eyeballs. Felt bad just walking out so we asked for our food to go, won't be going back there anytime soon. read more

I hate to tell people how great places like this are, because when too many people find out how Fantastic a restaurant is, you can't get a table any more and it can change and I don't want this place to change. I think this place is Awsome from the very friendly staff and owner to the great Portugese food on the menu. I've always liked places like this they stand the test of time because of the attention to detail (love) in the cooking and how they treat their customers. I will go back again and again, this is my kind of place. A real gem that I hope will be around forever. This is what restaurants were like when I was growing up in the city, if you're a snob maybe it's not for you, if you're a real person you should really love this place. This was my first visit to Captains Place and I would recommend it if you are looking for good Portuguese food, big portions at a reasonable price. We started with the Kale soup which surprisingly was on the specials board but not on the regular menus. The soup was full of kale, beans, cabbage and some pasta elbows but the chorico was almost non existent , I would order it again because the flavor more than made up for it. We ordered the chorico appetizer which came to the table flaming,awesome presentation and spicy tender chorico, I can't wait to order this again. I had the roast goat which was incredibly tender and flavorful and served with roast potatos and the standard rice. My friend orders the portuguese steak topped with a slice of ham and two eggs and served with sliced fried potatos, he loved it. The service was on point although not very friendly but we went to eat, not make friends. I will be returning soon. read more
