The food was always fresh, hot, and flavorful -- the type of seafood that made you sit back and hum while eating. And the customer service? Top tier. Friendly faces, quick service, and a warm vibe like family. Fast forward to today I walked in expecting to feel a little nostalgic and maybe even bring back a piece of my childhood. What I got instead was a horror show. First red flag: I instantly realized it's under new management. The energy was cold, like I had walked into a place that didn't even want to be open. No greeting. No smile. The light-skinned girl behind the counter had an attitude like I was bothering her just by existing. Short answers, eye rolls girl, you work here, not me. Then the food. Lawd. My fries were limp, undercooked, and soggy like they were dropped in oil and pulled out 30 seconds later. The fish? RAW. Not just undercooked -- I mean damn near swimming. It was cold and slimy inside. DISGUSTING. Now let's talk about the line staff. Dirty uniforms, no gloves, no hairnets. I saw one of them scratching his neck and then going right back to touching food like that was normal. I literally lost my appetite standing there watching it. The kitchen looked like it hadn't been cleaned since Obama was in office. This ain't the Captain K I grew up on. This place went from a neighborhood gem to a straight-up health code violation. The food was tasty but the store smelled like a marlboro factory. Worse cuz they don't burn the cigarettes in the factory. Thru must have been flat out smoking in the kitchen. It was horrible. When you open the door to Captain K's you're greeted with a straight line counter on your left that's mainly full of microwaves, giant jars of banana peppers, croutons, and other things that they're actively cooking with. On the right you've got a set of six bench tables. There's lots of paintings on the walls and a bright ocean color scheme. The air is full of oil as there's no separation between the fryers and the seating area. They also have multiple chalkboards on the walls where they've written a la carte items, combo items, and other things that they don't have on their actual menu. So if you're going to order make sure to look beyond the menu to at least three chalkboards scattered through the restaurant. There were no kids meals. My daughter and I decided on Fried Chicken but at 1:00 on a Sunday they were out. no plans on making more. This was disappointing because it was the only non fish item other than shrimp. The side items offered were four types of potatoes, mac and cheese, coleslaw and potato salad. My daughter decided to order two pieces of Whiting as fish and chips. I ended up being uninspired by the menu and decided not to get anything. There are no bathrooms. Wait staff were very friendly. They connected with us and seemed to be nice people. Some pretty good singing along with the radio Food took about 15 mins to cook, not too long to wait. The fries were terrible. Although hot, they were soft and under cooked - that mealy feeling of potato that wasnt internally cooked enough to have some fluff. It didn't help that the fries made my grandson cry. Oh how I was disappointed, I should've know something was wrong when we walked in and I didn't see that beautiful plant. That they had with the long branches growing across the wall. it's not like it used to be there under new management. I just ordered there without being there for years. The fish wasn't fried crispy like it usually is neither was the fries. The sauce says they don't have like they used to have which is their special yellow sauce, and the coleslaw don't even taste like it used to, honestly I wouldn't even eat there anymore. I wasn't sure exactly what Captain K was serving up prior to me venturing over there, so I decided to put some pics on Yelp to update it, and post a review. It is 'hidden' right at the corner of Princess Anne and Lynnhaven, in the Hardees/Goodwill shopping center. Small 'dine in' area, but alot of orders go as take-out. Simply put, Captain K's is a quick-prep seafood place. At lunchtime, they have specials that are in the range of $5.00, (Fried Shrimp + french fries) (Fish and Fries) (Chicken, fish and fries), etc. This is the place you go to get seafood quick and cheap, when you don't have the time or the money to eat at a sit down place like Georges or Red Lobster. I ordered up a "Fish, Shrimp and Fries" combo. The Shrimp are good sized shrimp! Very good. The fish was pretty thin, that I didn't care for as much. The fries are just the frozen krinkle fries. The Hush-puppies are okay, but not spectacular. What I forgot to order and try out was the "Catfish". I am from the south, so that is a must for me to try. There are some days I want to take my wife out for a sit-down meal, and there are other days when I want some low priced shrimp in ten minutes! Imagine a hallway with one side lined with booths and the opposite side is where they take your order, prepare and cook your food. It's a Korean, mom & pop establishment that serves mostly seafood. Surprisingly good! A fine dining establishment it's not but as far as fried fish and fries go it's on point! They fry it up right when you order so everything is crispy and hot but prepare for a short wait. The reason for three stars: the tarter sauce was oddly sweet for me and the cocktail sauce was kinda just ketchup with no horseradish and with fried fish you want those accompaniments. Also the fish could use a touch more spice for me personally but it was definitely crispy goodness. Not to mention the hot fries and crunchy clam strips, and the chicken tenders were an unexpected but tasty part of the meal. The 1 hushpuppy I got was cooked hard as a rock, there were enough french fries to feed 4 people, the fish was supposed to be flounder. There's no way that was flounder. The shrimp had to be medium and butterflied and more batter than shrimp, the scallops weren't done. The coleslaw was so finely chopped you really couldn't tell if it was cabbage or not. This was my first and probably last trip to Captain K's. Everything was portion controlled ...but freshly and quickly prepared. The prices were good and the employees were friendly. That said i'll get to the seafood. They had a large variety of seafood and I ordered 3 dinners....Catfish, scallops and shrimp. Everything was fried . Slaw and french fries came with my meals. The slaw was good and I could have eaten twice as much as I was given. They gave me enough fries for 6 people and they were well prepared. The seafood was adequate, and that's about all I could say for it. We were very hungry and ate all except the "geonormous" pile of fries! I stated that this was probably my one time trip to Captain K's......It's too far from my home to make a special trip but if I was headed home from that direction I might stop if I wanted a quick supper!
