Absolutely terrible experience. This business failed to update their holiday hours online (Memorial Day), so I placed an order totaling $35.84 and drove out to pick it up only to find the doors locked and the place completely closed. With a note on the door apologizing for the inconvenience but they were closed. When I contacted them about a refund for food I never received, they refused to give my money back and refused to prepare the food I previously ordered and paid for. They handled the situation incredibly unprofessionally. To make matters worse, instead of trying to resolve the issue like a legitimate business, they wanted to argue and tell me deal with whoever I ordered it through. Customers should not have to pay for a business's failure to communicate accurate operating hours. The lack of accountability, customer service, and basic professionalism here is unbelievable. I got the chicken Philly $11 and the crab cake shrimp fish plate $24. - The chicken Philly was decent and the bread was nice and soft. Driving to the location I was skeptical I had never been in the area before and I was like oh my goodness where is the GSP taking me. Once I entered the restaurant I wasn't greeted at all, there were only two workers so I am going to assume that they were really busy since there was about 4 cars outside before us. You can order your food from the kiosk what's great is that once you order you can go back in your car and the food will be delivered to you. One cook had extremely long locs that hung past his waist and wasn't wearing a hair net, while the other staff member was properly covered with gloves, apron, and a hair net. Even so, no one washed their hands after moving between tasks--handling raw items, pulling food from the fryer, and even touching the register. The most alarming moment was when a customer walked in from outside, went straight behind the counter, began talking loudly near the food, and was never asked to wash her hands, put on gloves, or step away. This was extremely unsanitary and should never happen in any food establishment. As for the environment, the floors and counters didn't look clean, and the setup leaves customers watching every misstep with no separation between prep and front area. Definitely some health department red flags. On a positive note, the food itself was cooked well--I ordered fish and fries, and the other item was a fish sandwich. After reading the reviews on here we decided to give this place a try! I was thinking to myself... fish tacos and Philly cheesesteaks at one place sounds a little random but man both of these are fabulous. You can smell the delicious seasoning before you even open up the fish tacos . It smelled like it would be really salty but it was absolutely perfect. Coleslaw is fantastic and there was like a semi sweet sauce on top. I'm usually not a person who likes sauces on the sweeter side but this entire combo works. The vibe is not the best and the people behind the counter are not friendly but not rude either. The underlying scent is fried food and weed. You can tell there was a decision made to not spend any money on the decor and instead on the food. I got the sense people order their food ahead of time and then pick it up. You order your food and they don't really want you to wait in there. You wait in your car and then they come out and get you and then you follow them back in. They show you your food so you can say it's as you ordered and then they close it up and bag it. The food is cooked to order so it's hot and fresh. It was tasty. This was their redeeming factor. The shrimp was/is probably prawn sized, or at least tiger shrimp because they were huge. This make Popeye's butterfly shrimp look like a shrivel balloon. Crab cake had no fillers so all you get is shredded up lumps of crab. The fries are seasoned well and that sauce they give out is very flavorful. I also had the fish and that was delish as well. I found this restaurant through a random yelp search while travelling South. I had to try it for the name alone. My Dad's name is Skip and therefore... why not?! I am so glad that I gave this spot a shot! I ordered the crab cake, shrimp and fish platter. The food was fried perfectly. Crispy, not too oily, flavor in the breading and the seafood (a touch of salt goes a long way). The customer service wasn't the best or the worse. I get COVID has everyone a bit freaked out and standoffish but a smile, a hello, a "glass of water while you wait ma'am" goes a long way. Especially when I was the only person in the restaurant on what appeared to be a super slow day. Maybe they were having an off day? There were three people that day behind the counter and the air was very thick when I walked in. Either way, the food was excellent and everyone has a bad day or two or three. Not sure what type of fish it is at times in many places but hey thanks for serving it up right. Some very simple meals but when done right they hit the spot. The key is that this place does it right. All the food is cooked as ordered and it is not much of a wait. If you want to eat in the place you probably could but it is a grab and go operation. Plenty of seating and I am sure that if you wanted to eat in there they would not have an issue but don't point at your Yelp app on the phone saying Shawn said that you can eat there. On my multiple trips there people were always ordering for others and I know this because I can hear them talking on their phone like it's a pizza slice for all to hear. I enjoyed my food from Chef Skip 757 but a few things threw me for a loop. When I pulled up to the location, an individual stepped out who was not wearing a mask and she works there. In addition, when food handling is taking place you should be dressed in a manner to prevent body hair, deodorant and any other debris from entering the food. Located in a small area that hosts other businesses, the parking lot supports parking in front or nearby. This is not an establishment that supports dine in based on how they are set up. You enter, order, wait, clothes absorb the smell of fry oil and your order comes out. I strongly suggest ordering ahead to limit your wait and less chance of your clothes/hair mimicking the smell of food cooling. When buying seafood, the price can be higher but unless you inquire, the menu only says "Fish and shrimp, chicken etc" The type of fish I received was Swai (part of the catfish family of fish but not as expensive). I think it would serve customers to know what is being served since "Fish Fraud" is a thing. The portion was respectable and the seasoning of the food was enjoyable. Not a terribly long wait for my order. The interior appeared really clean but the ventilation was not the best. You can't see into the place because the windows are covered and it's not easy to see out if you're inside either. The interior has only so much room that only 2-3 people can be inside while ordering if you intend on establishing some social distance. There is a food truck and a location in Portsmouth as this one serves the Lynnhaven area. Not floored by the food or experience so undetermined if I'd dine here again. I used to see Chef Skip's food truck in random places around town years ago before he even had his restaurants. But every time I seen it, I had already ate so I never tried him out. But on this particular day, I made it a point to go check him out at his restaurant. It was a Saturday afternoon during COVID, so I wanted to make sure he was even open. I called to the restaurant for about an hour or so, and no pick up. But my gut was telling me he was open so I took a chance and headed out. I saw other people hanging around in the front of the restaurant when I pulled up. So I made my husband go see if they were open and to place our To Go order. He came back and said our food will be ready in about 30 minutes! Ok now I see why everyone was hanging around outside..ugh!! We finally got our food and went to the park to have lunch (seems to be our new thing now). I got the Philly Chicken Sandwich with Fries and the hubs got the fried fish, shrimp and fries. My sandwich was good, seasoned well but too salty as well as the fish and shrimp. My bread was soft and had plenty of meat and onions. It was too much Cheese but that's just me. I came here a couple years ago but didn't get to experience the food since the poor customer service had me walking out. It was Friday evening and I decided to get some fried fish and after debating on a few places I thought to give this place another try. I called in my order and the lady who answered the phone was super friendly. She said it'd be ready in about 10 minutes. Perfect! I was expecting to wait longer than that but as soon as I came in, my order was nearly ready. She even opened up my takeout box to ensure that everything looked okay, and it did!! Pulled up to the location and realized how close this place is near to me and yet I've never noticed it. Only 3 customer allowed inside at a time (perfect for COVID). Staff were wearing masks. Tape on floor to allow for appropriate spacing. Restaurant was clean and the staff were professional. Nice open area on which you can see them prepare your food. Ordered crab cake sandwich, side of clams and Philly cheesesteak. Presentation was great. Food was still hot when we pulled over to eat. Crab cake was full of crab (not a lot of filler like some places). Fries were okay. Clam strips ($7.00 in small container) were decent. My gf states the Philly cheesesteak was good but salty. She added sweet peppers but wished she would've asked for hot peppers as her sandwich could use a little "kick" to it. The sauce is sweet which balances out the saltiness. I experienced this good truck at the Bam Bam Spring 2018 at Norfolk Scope this past Saturday. I ordered the meal that consisted of: SWAI fried fish, fried crab cake and fries. I am definitely not with the majority on this one. Upon ordering I asked if the food was fried, hoping for broiled. I also asked about the fish, SWAI was confirmed and one last question, what oil is the food fried in... salad oil. I hadn't heard of 'salad oil' before... but I was gamed. I so wish I stuck with my first instinct. Because this truck was new to me, I figured something simple... fish and fries or shrimp and fries... but noooooooooo I had to be greedy and needy and ordered fish, crab cake and fries. In my mind I didn't need a crab cake. But it's hard to find a great meaty crab cake so I was feeling adventurous and spontaneous this past Saturday. The crab cake ... it tasted nothing like a crab cake. I ate maybe two bites and was turned off. I am not sure if it was the oil or the crab cake itself. I was super disappointed. The SWAI fish, I love SWAI so I was thoroughly pleased with the fish. Again the oil gave it a different taste though. I just think I am not a fan of 'salad oil' I love cocktail sauce with my seafood especially a homemade sauce, but this truck did not have any... only a homemade orange in color type sauce... it contained mayonnaise, I didn't even bother to try it. Experienced the bliss of Chef Skip's fried food truck offerings at pub trivia 2 weeks in a row. $14 for a crab cake, fish and fries combo that actually fed 2 adults on week 1. Other than white fish, I don't know what specific variety it was but it wasn't fishy, was seasoned splendidly and fried with the right amount of cheat meal grease. The crab cake was my wife's least favorite of the trio; round like a plump hushpuppy but composed of mostly breading. Fries were seasoned with old bay and had just the right texture; crisp composition so if you hold it up, it doesn't droop or sag over on itself...but not brick-like a la week old baguette. One of the heroes of the meal was the orange sauce that my wife described as "I don't know what kind of sauce it is, other than orange, is but it's good." Week 2 saw Swai Fish tacos that, despite never hearing of that kind of white fish, were very good; 2 for $9, edible flower included. Had a great convo with the owner's brother, Byron, who was holding down truck service because Chris Skipper "went brick and mortar in VB."
