Great local place for fish & chips! The restaurant is clean and staff are very friendly. We liked it so much that we came here twice during our 5 day visit to the area. We were visiting Port perry for the first time and came here per the very good reviews. We ordered the take out special and accidentally ordered too much, but it was so tasty! It was very busy and we had to wait 30 mins in total. We brought some home and heated up the food next day and it was still so good. The fish could have been bigger but the flavor and frying method was perfect. I don't think eating inside would have been good because it seemed way to packed. Port Perry wasn't on my radar of places to visit until I started to visit Willowtree Farm to pick up my CSA share. I decided to make a day out of the bi-weekly trips and see what Port Perry had to offer. I visited Captain George Fish & Chips a few weeks ago and due to the pandemic seating was limited to a maximum of 10 people. The tables were spread out and the patrons were fairly good with keeping their masks on at all times. We did wait for about 10 minutes for a table but were able to do so inside. The restaurant was clean and cutely decorated with marine type decor. Food - 4/5 My family of 3 shared the Captain George's Special and ordered a piece of haddock. The food was served piping hot and everything was delicious. The batter was light and crispy on the outside and was the perfect compliment to the juicy fish on the inside. Between the halibut and haddock I prefer the halibut as it was bigger, thicker and seemed "meatier" if you know what I mean. The scallop was a tad overcooked but still good nonetheless. Aside from the great food, I want to give special mention to the tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. Both were tangy, with a hint of sweetness and elevated the fried goodness. Service - 4/5 The ladies that worked at the restaurant were so nice and hospital. They would frequently check in and ask if we needed anything else. At the time of our lunch the other patrons were clearly locals and it was lovely to see the staff catching up with them. Although the other patrons were locals, we never once felt neglected or that our service wasn't as good. I would definitely visit the restaurant again and would recommend any one to visit. The food is good value for the portions and definitely a plus that it also tastes great. read more

Went in around 4:30 and was told we could not get a table until after 5pm so we got takeout instead. A couple comes in after us and is told they could get a table by 4:45. We ask again about getting a table seeing as more people were clearing out by then, again told we could not get seated until after 5. Ended up going outside to eat (fries were barely cooked, no colour on them. Fish was barely battered and falling apart). By the time we returned inside to get rid of the trash the couple that came in after us were already seated and had their food delivered 10 minutes before we would have even gotten a table supposedly. While in Port Perry on birdwatching related business I stopped in at Captain George's with a friend. It's a nice enough place, nothing special, but a good option if you find yourself in Port Perry. My friend had the straight up 2 piece fish and chips ($9.95). The fish - halibut - had good flavour, wasn't too greasy, and the pieces were a decent size. Fries were above average for a fish and chips place; I believe they're fresh cut. I don't dig on fish so I went for the poutine. Turned out to be half decent for a fish and chips joint in Port Perry. The gravy was too salty and the cheese was grated rather than curds, but they made up for this lack of quality and authenticity by using a massive amount of cheese and gravy. I like my poutine gooey so, for me, this is a perfectly acceptable tradeoff. I saw some people order the Captain George's Special ($16.95): fish and chips, scallops, shrimp, onion rings, and salad. It looked ridiculous, a total feast of deep fried, battered goodness, if that's your thing. read more

I'm from this area, (though I'm now staying in Richmond Hill area). So far, this is my favourite place when I'm jonesing for fish and chips. The batter is not thick! Fries are good. This is a great dependable place. Too bad they don't do their own tartar sauce, but on the flip side, I give them credit for just concentrating on the food. The burgers are pretty good too. At first it does not seem like I was even going to walk in. The decor and atmosphere felt I was walking into the 80's or maybe before that. Well as I walked in I saw my prize. With this place the fish is what you see and is what you get. All other items are nice but nothing to write home about. The battered fished is classic here. Crispy, large portions with each bite better than the next. And for fried fish you know it's done well when it's not greasy. The fish was clean, the batter was crispy, and the taste was fresh. A family of 4 with drinks can come out of here well fed for under $50. And remember that's fish and chips, salad and drinks. Unfortunately I was so full from the fish I could not try a desert item.
