Came to Captain Bob's for a late lunch on a Friday and found the place mostly empty. The only other patrons who were there were enjoying the buffet but there was steady to-go business. The interior of the restaurant is loaded with ocean and sea items, as you'd expect. The tables and chairs are a mishmash mostly consisting of, what I'd call, banquet chairs. Mine had a pretty big rip in it and a mighty wobble that must have meant to make me feel like I was on a boat. The server took my order. I got a hot dog and fries and asked if they could put their pimento cheese on the hot dog (if you haven't tried it, you should!). The server said she would have to ask and I said that I was happy to pay extra if needed. What came next was so odd. I could hear the entire conversation from the kitchen. Server: This guy wants to know if we can put pimento cheese on a hot dog. Cook: What? That's weird. Server: Yea, but that's what he wants. Cook:.....No. Tell him we don't have any. Server: Ok. So the server came back to my table and said they didn't have any. So I just got ketchup and mustard. The dog was fine. The fries were under-seasoned. Really, after hearing that convo, I was just ready to leave. The sign out front says that "There's only two places to eat..Home and Captain Bob's..." well I can put pimento cheese on my hot dogs at home so I don't need to return to Captain Bob's. read more

My family visited this location last summer when we first moved here. The atmosphere was honestly really home-y. It seemed like all the customers knew one another. They were talking to each other and asking about the families from across the room. There was a buffet and it was delicious. Everyone in line was cutting up with one another. Comfort food!! If you're looking for something familiar to scratch a comfort food itch in a convenient location, this is such a great place for that. I will be going back whenever I am craving fried catfish since it is close and it tastes great. Service is also pretty good. We literally raced out of a wedding reception to make it here before closing! We arrived maybe 30 minutes prior to closing but the greeting we received was as if they just opened. Hush puppies come to the table right after you order. Leave your carb counter at the door here. The hush puppies and butter are delicious! Tonight's special included a one or two-piece flounder dinner. Hubby ordered the two piece and I ordered the one piece so we could share. It came to the table quickly and was piping hot. The fish was fried to perfection as always. The meal came with a choice of two sides. I chose coleslaw and fries. Again, great choices. I love their slaw! This place is definitely no frills. It is not at all fancy so don't have that expectation if you decide to visit. Service was a little slow but the food made up for that since it was great! I tried their sliced bar-b-que. My word! Hands down the best barbecue I've had since moving to the US. I live in Texas and I just don't like the way they do barbecue. This style of barbecue was right up my alley. The pork loin was thinly sliced and cooked on a charcoal pit. I liked that the edges were crispy and just slightly burnt. The seasoning of the meat was divine. I will NEVER forget this barbecue and will compare every other barbecue experience in the US to this one. In my opinion, North Carolina's barbecue is in a wonderful category of its own!!! Their sides (hush puppies, potato salad, garden salad, corn nuggets) were all pretty tasty. Prices were reasonable. Let me say first that this place does have a lot of potential. My wife and I both got the BBQ plate mine came with okra and a baked potato. Overall the service was average. I was never asked what I wanted on my baked potato and the menu didn't say anything about what came on it. The atmosphere isn't terrible when you walk in although upon being seated I had a problem with the floor and the windowsills being so dirty. There were at least two dead flys on the windowsill behind where we were sitting and there were two more living flys on then window directly next to us. When the food came everything was hot and the waitress did ask how everything was. The pork BBQ has good flavor although it was dry. This could have been fixed by the sauces at our table but when I reached for those they were both very dirty and I was not getting ready to pour the vinegar on my food with it looking like it had sat there for the last 10 weeks. The hush puppies were pretty good and not greasy by any means. Before I ordered the okra I asked if it was fresh to which my waitress replied "yes". The okra was definitely not fresh as it was very soggy (but not greasy). Also I would have actually preferred the okra to have just been baked because it didn't have any seasoning at all, therefore there was really no point in frying it. My baked potato was very fresh tasting. In fact it would have been great if it had come with cheese, bacon, butter or even some chives (nothing fancy). The potato came with a packet of sour cream, and a packet of fake butter. I was very disappointed that they were cutting corners in this area. The sour cream had cornstarch in it (artificially made stable) and the fake butter had absolutely no dairy in it at all. If your going to cheat people this way why not plate the fake butter or put it into a ramekin on the side? Butter and sour cream are not too expensive any restaurant. In all it was $23 and I couldn't believe I had just paid $20 bucks to be served a baked potato with no butter and some dry pork. If they had just given me real butter and cleaned their restaurant this place could easily be a 3-4 star. Even as I write this I am debating whether or not a 2 star is too giving. read more

Been here several times and it's been hit and miss. Tonight however, it was a big miss. Went here for my dad's birthday for the seafood buffet. It was $20 a person for fried shrimp, fish, broiled shrimp, a few cold salads, North Carolina BBQ, and hush puppies. Now Bob's has amazing bbq so for me it is a good deal, however my mother in law ordered from the menu. Not only did they get the order completely wrong (ordered grilled but served blackened), the baked potato was raw (quite literally), and the "cornbread"...I attached a picture so you could see for yourself. I have never seen anything like this and it definitely wasnt cornbread. It was inedible and the waitresses attitude was as unappetizing as the corn thing. We ended up having to go to the servers station ourself to get refills, and in response to the bad meal "that's just how they cook it"... yeah... Bob you really screwed up tonight and if wasnt for the bbq I sure wouldn't be back. read more

Steak and shrimp Fried okra, hush puppies the steak was absolutely delicious and the shrimp were outstanding okra. I had them cooking a little more. It wasn't quite done, but it was delicious. The food was very very good. The only thing that bothered me was everybody else that got seated got a bowl of hush puppies I did not get a bowl hush puppies so I was quite disappointed but I'll tell you whoever cook that steak. Well, the staff are rude as shit and the food is worse than them. Never will go back. Never heard anything good of them. Chicken is dry and pre-fried. It is an abomination of a food establishment. Vinegar-based BBQ pork, I must say, is not bad. North Carolina does the vinegar and South Carolina does the mustard, I am not sure that either way is bad ... I had low expectations coming into the Bobs, despite the overall positive reviews on Yelp. The atmosphere inside is not very appealing. I had to force the main door shut as I walked in - kinda sketchy. The decor is sort of bland - generic pics of sailboats and starfish. But who cares about that -- the food is not bad. I had the lunch buffet (namely baked chicken and pulled pork). The chicken fell off the bone nicely despite being a bit dry. The vinegar-based pulled pork didn't really need BBQ sauce, as it was tasty on its own. The hush puppies looked like giant Cheetos, but were equally tasty. We were in our way home and have always said that restaurant must be good because the parking lot is always full. We decided to try it. That was a big mistake. We decided to with the buffet but very disappointed with how small it was. The choices were fried chicken, bbq chicken, NC Style bbq, pork chops, cat fish, Mac and cheese, green beans, and fried apples. The fried chicken looked dried out and not very meaty. The green beans had no flavoring and drown in water. The Mac and cheese was water based with no milk what so ever and no cheese flavor. I could've bought a box of Kraft Mac and cheese with the same result. The "fried" apples were floating around in what looked like water. So I didn't even want to try the fried apples just because they were floating in water. The food wasn't anything great, it was gross. I figured I'll try the desserts. Don't eat that either because the choices were banana pudding or cherry something cake but advertised as pineapple cake.the banana pudding tasted like bananas and cookies in vanilla pudding. I would recommend just keep driving until you reach the next town with more options. The restaurant itself was dirty and filthy. I'm surprised as dirty as it is, the health department hasn't stepped in yet to make them clean up. We will never eat there again. read more

Picked up a plate for a fundraiser today and I was so so so disappointed! I hadn't had their food in a while and I used to be a fan so I was happy to support the cause and get some good food. The plate LOOKED yummy at first. That was until I picked up the fish and realized it had scales on it. After looking more it looked like this piece of fish wasn't scaled at all!!! As I said it was for a fundraiser so I didn't want to take it back to complain but I'm pretty sure I won't be purchasing anymore fundraising tickets involving Captain Bob's. We picked up a few plates of the shrimp and scallop dinners for takeout. We noticed after we reached our destination that they didn't bother to add napkins, cutlery or any sauces for the fish. No sauces for the shrimp would normally not be a problem, except the tiny shrimp that we all got in our dinners could have really used some cocktail sauce or some help with flavor. The scallops and shrimps were the smallest I had ever seen, which is really disappointing for the price you pay per plate. Will keep driving past this place next time I'm through town. read more

Stopped by on our way to Virginia and tried out their buffet. 5-stars for the fried catfish and fried chicken! My boyfriend said it was literally the best friend chicken he's ever had and he knows "yardbird". This is not a fancy place by any means but if you're looking for straightforward, no-frills, delicious country cooking at a reasonable price, this place is worth checking out. No offer of lettuce or tomato They are also a la cart which means you have to order everything on the side which makes them expensive for what they are. If you are in want for butter- you are given packaged margarine! Ewww!! Same with the " lemon". You get a gross packaged " juice" chemical cocktail full. A seafood place that serves tarter sauce in a package- loaded with toxic chemicals- instead of homemade- should close its doors. This may be one of the few open on Sunday... But do youself a favor... A pleasant surprise off of the 17 despite the odd combination of BBQ and Seafood concept. Came on a Sunday around 1pm and the place was packed from the church crowd. Staff were all super nice, real southern hospitality like, and the atmosphere was lively. They had a buffet when I came in today but I'm not a fan of them as I don't like people handling the utensils (I'm a little germaphobe at times) so I ordered from the menu. I ordered the Flounder and BBQ combo which was good and hardy....lots of food. They start you out with free hush puppies by the way before your meal. Then my food came and it was a huge and fresh piece of fresh flounder, a big scoop of Carolina pulled pork (vinegar based bbq), two sides (I had corn fritters and green beans) and a couple more hush puppies. Food was good, no complaints at all. Only detractor, which really wasn't a big deal and was my own fault was that I was sat underneath an ac vent so my food got a little cold towards the end of my meal (food was pipping hot when it arrived so it's not that my food was cold, just that I sat under an ac vent). As for the restaurant decor, yep, it's outdated but who cares, you're not eating the decor. But could it use a remake, absolutely but it didn't bother me and I wouldn't expect a mom and pop place to shut down business for a month out in the country to redecorate. My boyfriend and I took a little mini-vacation to Edenton which is about 10 miles from Captain Bobs. Since we got to Edenton on a Sunday and all shops and restaurants are closed on Sundays, we traveled to a different town to find an open restaurant. We just headed down route 17 and found this little gem! SO HAPPY that we did because we absolutely loved it! Coming from northern Virginia, we are so used to the overly priced yet mediocre food. However, when we walked in and were greeted by two friendly young women, we didn't know what to except until we opened our menus and were stunned at the inexpensive dishes. Not only was the food so inexpensive, but there were a lot of items to choose from! We couldn't decide so in the meantime our server brought over our sodas, some water, and some complimentary hush puppies. We finally decided on getting a grilled cheese ($0.99) with a side of fries ($2.99) for me as I am a big kid at heart and the BBQ pork and fried chicken platter for my boyfriend. The platter included a big piece of fried chicken on top of a big portion of Carolina pulled pork BBQ, potato salad, onion rings, hush puppies, cornbread, and some other type of bread all for $12.99!! The food was so delicious!! We were so pleasantly surprised at not only the friendliness of the staff and the tasty food but also the inexpensive prices. In total we paid $29.60 for one soda, our two meals, two pieces of cake, and tip!!!!! What a deal!!
