So I ordered this calzone, appearance looked great but when I went to eat was just like it had a lot of water from cooking it inside of it! The bread was soggy as I was cutting through the pieces. I'm giving them 2 stars because I really enjoyed their shiraz. Pricey but a good-sized glass. We ordered their #1 pizza (pepperoni, portobello, onions) and asked not to put cheese on it. After 5 minutes a different server came back and said that that particular pizza without cheese would be bad. What? So the only thing that makes their pizza good is the cheese? Forget about the crust or the sauce, the mushrooms or the pepperoni. Things weren't looking good. Then the "knowledgeable" server suggested us two pizzas to choose from whose main ingredients were cheeses. So no, we didn't ordered anything else. Finished our wine and left. NOTE: Even though their menu online (and on their wall) include the small and large pizza, they DO NOT sell large pizzas, at least to dine-in. Let's talk about the dough first, thin crust, Wood oven pizza with a really nice burnt edge. We started and ordered 4 pizzas from the Margarita to the fully loaded. The Buffalo mozzarella was very delicious and the fully loaded pizza was sloppy but good. Really good The best was the 5th pizza we had for dessert. "Ugh, across from the Port Authority?" I thought. "That ought to be nice." OMG, it was adorable. Seriously, so cute and charming. The service was prompt (it was like 10 minutes to closing) and polite (see previous parenthetical comment) and the pizza was very tasty. That said--It isn't what I was after (still giving it a great rating because that's MY problem, not theirs. I freakin' hate it when someone gives a place a bad review because that person wanted Chinese but went to an Italian joint, or whatever. Idiots. Anyway....). I wanted a slice of NY pizza. I miss it terribly and there is nothing else like it. And this wasn't like it, either. This was "better." Whole pies only (no "ice and slice" here) and froufrou flavors (mine ended up with, like, fennel and sausage--which was DELICIOUS, but I was after plain ol' za). Now here's an odd location for an upscale pizza place, I'll say right up front, the pizza tasted DELICIOUS. I've been on a bit of a pizza tour in recent weeks, and this place did not disappoint. The location, however is a bit odd, sandwiched beneath one of the Port Authority bus overpasses on ninth avenue. Still once inside you'll feel comfortable, and pleasant. The space is nicely decorated in 50's and 60's decor, and the owners seem to all be Italian. One thing that was a bit much is they seemed to have coached the waitress to give a lengthy spiel about how the ingredients are hanging to dry fresh in the back, and then ground just before they are used. Indeed they were quite fresh, but the pitch seemed a bit rehearsed. The $28 mushroom & mozzarella pizza was enough for the three of us, so the prices aren't that bad. Really nice pizza joint behind not-so-skanky-anymore Port Authority. The place has an authentic feel to it so naturally, the prices are up there. We had a Pizza Margherita with eggplant and it was delicious. We also shared a cannoli. Not a bad lunch. It was nice that the tables were not placed too closely together and that there were not too many people there at noon on a Tuesday. There was a line when we arrived at 6:30 pm. No formal check in, but just an acknowledgement of who was next as we waited outside. When we were seated about 20 min later, we understood why we waited. The smell of fresh ingredients was the first thing to hit me. I ordered a caprese salad which had some of the best mozzarella I've ever tasted. Roasted red peppers were unbelievable. The size of the pizza is between a personal and small, but just right for two after salads. The flavor of the sauce on the pizza was unlike what I can get in SC. On our trip to NYC my husband and I were on a quest to find the best pizza in the city. Unfortunately, Capizzi's didn't win the award despite the brick oven experience. After all day walking around the city we were ready for a filling lunch. Upon walking in the door we noticed a sign that said 'Cash only' which although understandable isn't convenient for those who prefer to use credit on vacation. The menu had many choices and many tasty sounding toppings. Typically my husband and I can't agree on a pizza so we were looking to get two personal pizzas but at $18-$22 for a 10" pie we just couldn't justify it. We settled on a marinara sauce with tomatoes, basil, parmesan cheese, and olive oil on top. The pizza crest was crisp and the ingredients tasted fresh. Even though the pizza was a large my husband and I gobbled it up without a problem which left us wanting more. Overall Capizzi's was a cute restaurant with a fresh tasting pizza. However the price and size of the pizza left us to choose a hole in our wallet or our stomachs. read more

Cute little brick oven pizza place just behind port authority. Met friends there for dinner and loved it. I ordered the loaded my friends ordered a Margherita pizza and a fennel sausage pizza. If you're a cheese person, this is a great pizza place for you. I'm more of a sauce guy. They have good sauce, but I felt like it lacked punch. The crust is good. For fun, the restaurant's owner seems to have tossed in some anachronistic decor. Seriously, they have a TV from no earlier than 1979 just sitting there in front of the kitchen. A neighborhood friend referred me to Capizzi and so I gave it a try. It's hidden under the PABT bridge on 9th Ave and the area is kind of sketchy. The prices were Times Square prices and the pizza was just as bad as you would find there too, despite the "brick oven" style of cooking. The pizza was undercooked and the sauce was bland. It was pretty bad. It also lacked cheese. Since these are the MAJOR components of good pizza (crust, sauce, cheese) it was a total FAIL! I'm a fan! Close enough to our hotel near Times Square that we walked there. We ordered the Loaded and the salad with apples and goat cheese. The salad is a must! The goat cheese was the best part of the salad. The roasted garlic was a nice touch on the Loaded. We came around 5pm and it was empty except for us and one other table. Plus, they play great music! Excellent pizza. There's an inventive streak to the menu as well. I had one of their recommended combos that featured hot sausage and caramelized fennel. If you want to stick to something a little more familiar, they've got you covered there too. One fellow in my party doesn't have much stomach to entertain novel ideas in food, and he was perfectly happy having the Loaded pizza. It's wood fired, so don't expect it to be delivered to the table right quick. They're sticklers for not splitting the check, which was a bit on the irritating side. We couldn't have anything to drink beyond soft drinks or water with our meal for expense report reasons -- since we weren't paying in cash, we had to leave it off the ticket entirely. So just keep that in mind if you've got need to split checks up in advance. The soda, by the way, is bottled, so don't expect bottomless refils either. read more

The décor and feel of Capizzi gives you that out of the city feel, while being in an unpopular area behind Port Authority. Quite a surprise. We started with an arugula salad w/ apples, goat cheese, cranberries ecta. Not sure what else was on it was very good and more than enough to share. Order the #4 pizza with mushrooms, Peppers and Onions...pizza was thin with a bubbling crispy crust. Servers where very nice and attentive can't wait for my next pizza craving.
