I was just in the store 12/1 looking for a Christmas ornament and was excited to find a gift for my partner. While looking, I noticed that no one greeted me, no one asked if I needed help with anything. Yet, several people around me were asked and they all happened to be white, or look white at least. As a person of color, I couldn't help but feel that this was done on purpose. I even stood next to the jewelry which is right next to the cashier and nothing. I still bought the item and left. Ultimately, I decide to come back a few minutes later to return it. This didn't feel right at all. I wanted to give them my feedback in the moment but decided to call after I left. As a brown male amongst all white woman, it just didn't seem like the best idea. I want to say that this wasn't on purpose but it's hard not to take it that way. TL;DR: Adorable store, tasteful and unique items. Worth a visit if you're in search of home furnishings, if not to get a little inspiration. Customer service level may vary. If I can figure out a way to use my reward online, I'd shop more often. This is a lovely store, filled with lots of cool/cute/French/MCM/unique home furnishing items and beyond. If you're shopping for a gift, you can't really go wrong here. I stopped by recently on a Friday after playing pickleball at Delridge CC. We'd moved into a bigger home and had been shopping for unfussy outdoor furniture. I love the aesthetic of Fermob bistro set, and when I saw this store carried more Fermob items, I decided to pay a visit. The store is filled to the brim with charming items you'd want to take home, including some apparel, jewelry and bags. I went back the next day with my partner, and we bought some outdoor rocking chairs, a loveseat and some side tables, as well as a cozy alpaca blanket to use in our yard. They were having their 20% off anniversary sale June 8-, so I feel very happy about the shopping on Saturday. The reason I say "maybe" to the "would you recommend?" question has to do with my personal experience on Friday, when there were fewer (2?) employees and also fewer (2) customers in the store. Make of it what you will. As a POC and someone who walked in there in some athleisure getup with no purse (just the phone), I felt like some of the staff may judge a book by its cover. I obviously seemed interested in the furniture, tried sitting on them, curiously took photos of them to show my husband, but until I took the initiative to say hi, the employees acted like they wouldn't have any time to spare for me (2 employees talking to a white lady, 2 customers). I purchased 2 sets of Graf Lantz coasters and a bag that day. I was asked if I was in their system/reward program, but at no time was I asked to be added to the system. Also: I only found out about the anniversary sale starting the next day, because I overheard them telling the other customer and asked about it. (If I hadn't overheard, they might have lost a $3K sale.) Only after I went back with my (white) husband in a better outfit, I feel like I got more eager help. Again this was just my personal experience on a particular day, so your experience would of course vary depending on your/store's circumstances. It wasn't an overt profiling, but more like a series of small subconscious (or conscious) choices out of habit. To a person who's experienced this kind of dismissive behaviors from many a storekeeper, it may seem more like micro aggression. On the positive note, after my bigger purchase, I earned enough points to get a $100 discount! I feel like this is a pretty good reward program. I wish I could figure out a way to use this discount online/have things delivered, since I don't live close to the store. read more

I wandered into this shop over the weekend because of the festive window display. As soon as I walked in, I remembered why I don't visit this shop. The help is beyond rude and totally sanctimonious. One clerk walked right past me without even saying hi or asking if I needed help. I don't understand why this place is so snooty. These clerks probably make minimum wage yet turn their noses down at customers with a lot of disposable income. This is West Seattle, not the Bravern! I'm choosing to spend my dollars elsewhere, with businesses that appreciate all customers that enter their shop. read more

Just left this store and felt like I was being watched and followed by the staff. I grabbed two tapered candles to purchase and a man working there asked if he could hold them at the front until I was ready. I agreed but as I continued to look around I realized I no longer wanted to stay and give them more business. I bought the candles and left but I will not be returning. read more

Terrible Experience customer service wise. I was in the neighborhood and my friend wanted to stop in to see the Christmas decorations and maybe get a few things as she loves Christmas. My partner and I also were there with her. We all were followed around the store by various staff, pretending to straighten items. But my friend, who is a POC, was followed the most relentlessly, as I sort of dragged her to other parts of the store a few times to test the theory. I gave her space and observed for a bit then. One of them literally came up and started folding scarves that were already folded. At least, until I loudly proclaimed, "Man, I sure do love being followed around a store!" And then they were all gone, scattered as subtly as they could. Super disgusting experience. I get it, you've never met a black person before. Try to think how it would feel to be treated like that when you went in somewhere and stop assuming someone is stealing based on race or appearance. Never coming back. read more

We bought a Fermob outdoor furniture set here and a rivet was discovered to be missing or popped out about four or five months after purchase. Capers graciously worked with Fermob to exchange the chair for us and even let us keep the old chair that was missing a rivet. They went above and beyond and really delivered in terms of customer service here! Scott and the owner provide exceptional customer service, and so does Fermob. Have been coming to West Seattle for years. Always go to the shops on California Ave because I love small businesses. Stopped in to Capers and the lady working got all excited when I accidentally tipped a jar over. Nothing broke and just tipped over. She said oh please don't break anything in a rude voice. I have worked retail for years and things get broken, but you don't make the customer uncomfortable with that remark. Won't ever go in there again. read more

Looks cute from the outside, cute stuff on the inside, a little pricey, but if you want cute furniture you have to pay for it. BUT..... My problem with the place is this: I just moved here, I needed to buy all new furniture. I have been in 3 times in the last 3 weekends.. Not ONE person spoke to me, asked me if i needed help, or even gave me a second glance.. I was floored...I wanted a few of the pieces there , but I will be damned if i will spend my hard earned money somewhere that has people working there that cannot muster a hello. I have spent over $12,000 in the last 3 weeks finding things at other stores where they are nice to the customers... Capers loss.... I've shopped Capers at the junction in West Seattle before but lately I don't know something seems to have changed and I believe the employees needs a little lesson in customer service... I was there Christmas shopping and the employees seem so busy talking to eachother and people that they obviously knew it gave me the feeling of I don't belong in here and let me get the hell out now instead of finding something that I may have wanted to buy and end up helping the nonchalant employees get their paychecks! It took me YEARS of looking for the perfect couch before landing at Capers. Wish I would have thought of them first before searching. I love the personal attention and attention to detail Lisa gave me when making my choices. Last night I had some time to kill before meeting a girlfriend for dinner at Mashiko's so I decided to check out a few of my favorite shops in the Junction. Capers is another happy place of mine, I just wish my bank account allowed me to get everything I want. They have something for everywhere in your house, bedroom, kitchen, dinning room, etc., it truly is a one of a kind shop. Everything is unique and not something you'll find in every other store around. When you have to get a house warming or shower gift for that person who has everything come here you'll find the perfect gift. And once you've exhausted yourself shopping you can stop in the cafe for a lattes and a little snack to reward you for a successful shopping trip. read more

I walk to this place with the intention to buy something but one of the employees was so condescending and rude. She greeted me from across the store, asking me why I was there. I tell her that I'm just looking around for now. Her response was that she was doing her job, very snappy and rude. It was so rude and condescending, the way she spoke to me. I decided to turn around and leave this place because they don't deserve my money. When I was walking out one of the lady make a comment about me leaving to another coworker. Both of them was looking at me and giggling. This place have the most rude and unprofessional employees. I was very surprised at the way she treated a potential new customer. Visiting Seattle for the first time, walked into this awesome furniture store after lunch at the tuscan tearoom and met a really wonderful woman (the owner?!) who gave great advice and tips on where to go and what to do in seattle. She was super genuine and nice and couldn't have been more helpful. Thank you! The shop itself is wonderful for someone who is interested in home decor, it kind of reminds me the pier one right down the street from my house, however a bit more intimate, affordable, and unique! Loved every single item in the store, wish i lived in Seattle .. that way I could furnish it with all items from this store! This store is wonderful, but a tad pricey. There are accent items that you can find that are great deals, but their furniture is really pricey. There is one piece that I have been lusting over but is about twice as much as I would want to pay for it. The staff is wonderful, they will spend the time with you to help you find a fabric, they put items on hold, and will follow up with you when they come it, they are all around amazing. I do miss the food selection they had, I still crave the chicken panini sandwhich....ahhh If you have the money, or the love of decorating, this store is a must! read more

My mom bought us a new dinning room table as a wedding gift. She ordered it over the phone on October 1st. Rather than choosing the floor model, we decided to wait for a new table. On November 5th, my mom received a phone call that the table and bench had arrived. We went to pick it up on Friday, November 10th. Sadly, our "new" table was being used as the floor model. I am a multi-tasker and so is Capers, that is why I love this store. Where else can I grab a cookie and a sandwich and get an espresso drink, buy greeting cards and gifts for friends and do some interior decorating-this is "get it done" kind of a store. Not to mention the staff has always been really nice, last time they were offering up free hot coffee with Bailey's while you shopped. I declined but what a nice offer! They have a great variety of gifts from dishes, candles, jewelry, scarves even pj's. They also have a great selection of furniture and rugs. Things are very reasonably priced considering you aren't getting things you can get everywhere else in town! Me likes! read more

When it comes to customer love, Capers does it right. Recently, out of the blue, I received a hand written thank you note and $20 gift card in honor of my patronage. When most companies still don't understand it's much cheaper to foster your existing customers than it is to find new ones, this experience really stood out. Have always enjoyed this place. Lisa the owner and staff really try to have those unusual furnishings. I'm always looking for Asian designs and found plenty here, at great prices. Their prices are not bad and they had their great "end of summer sale" this weekend so we loaded up. They have beautiful jewelry too, I indulged in the architectural designs by Shelli Markee , spoiled myself. So help support the local industries, and artists, it's so important these days. Yes they may be a bit more pricey than the BIG department stores, but it's a whole different adventure to get to know the locals and know that you helped, and your house won't look like something out of a catalogue as everyone else's does. I look forward to having another trip over from Vashon. They help local artists also by showing and selling their works, so follow the trend, don't let gems like this disappear. P.S. they are always available by phone to help you when looking for that something special. So lets go back before all the high tech and enjoy a personable shopping experience. I used to live in West Seattle an one of my favorite things to do on a Saturday was to walk to Caper's and have an Aunt Pat's favorite and shop for furniture and knick knacks. Well, I moved and had other rituals, but I thought I should go back to an old haunt and have lunch and a shopping spree for my house. Oh what a terrible surprise to find out that they closed the cafe -- where did that delicious sandwich go?! I got over it (sort of) and did my shopping. Caper's still has the best stuff -- no better word for it, just stuff. They have awesome furniture, but even better are all the little things -- lotions, pillows, fun little books, glasses, jewelery, candles -- you name they have got it. For every pre-prison Martha Stewart lover, this place is a dream come true...For the guys who come with their gals, beware that you may be stuck standing around home decor, expensive furniture, candles, and serveware for quite awhile. To you guys: go ahead and grab a good latte from the cute baristas. They have a long-time rep for being a little less than friendly, but they're still cute, and they make a damn good latte. Generally, all the people who work here are attractive women, no matter what department of the store you're in. Everything in the store (except for the lattes) is rather pricey, so be ready to either window shop or bring some serious money. read more

Randomly walked into this store and had a nice conversation with who I think is the owner. She was super friendly and happily answered questions about a table I was interested in. I ended up buying the table and she offered to deliver it to me for free because it didn't fit in my car! That's amazing customer service. First, I have to say I miss the little cafe that used to be nestled inside Caper's. PROS: I still like to drop by and look around -- the furniture, knick-knacks and jewelry are generally tasteful, slightly trendy, and usually quite unique. It's a cute place to buy a housewarming gift. CONS: However, I find it a little pricey, and I generally don't like the vibe -- it caters to the uber-yuppie, corporate wife or smug corporate gal ... the type who are used to getting what they want and never say excuse me when they cross in front of you. The store clerks -- gosh, they would shudder if they were called that (!) -- have never asked me once in all the years I've gone there if I needed help, regardless of how slow business may have been and no matter how long I linger ... so I can't say I feel welcome there. It's the kind of place I adored years ago ... I wait to be pleasantly surprised about warmer customer service, but the frost hasn't melted yet! read more
