As many others have probably done, I discovered this consignment shop thanks to the hilarious videos posted by the owners on social media and had to check it out. The antique furniture selection is pretty great, but a lot of the chairs were priced too high for the condition IMO. The vintage dressers and sideboards were cleaned well and the shop isn't overcrowded with things. Not musty or smelling of rotting wood like some other places I've visited. The addition of plants and local artist section is a great idea to bring in customers who don't have the budget to take home a $7000 antique dresser, but may make a referral to others seeking such pieces. read more

Absolutely love the selection of art from small businesses-- thankfully their business cards are available near the displays so I can order directly! The staff member at the door completely ignored me though (all 4 times I passed by her), I gave her the benefit of the doubt but watched as she proceeded to greet/acknowledge 2 other women in the store. I purchased a rug from this business, and in hindsight there were more than a few red flags I wish I had paid closer attention to. The rug wasn't displayed in the shop and only availabe for purchase online, and when I picked it up, it was wrapped in plastic. After unrolling it at home, I discovered from the warp and weft weaving revealed it wasn't the quality, origin, or material they had represented. They also had failed to remove a dated thrift-store sales tag from two weeks earlier that was still attached, revealing a markup of over 900%. There was a slight odor at first that I assumed would air out with a fan and my HEPA air purifier, so I laid it down in my rec room and didn't think about it again for a couple of weeks. When I returned downstairs, despite my efforts, the rug had bloomed with a strong smell of mildew that filled the space and had transferred to nearby soft furnishings, including a sofa and chairs that ended up needing expensive professional cleaning because of the cross-contamination, and the rug has now been written off as a loss. Overall, I'm extremely disappointed with the purchase and feel duped and misled by the presentation and condition of the item. I had a terrible experience. Initially I left an instagram comment in hopes they would make it right (hey sorry about that please come back so we can help you with the chairs!) but instead they chose to block me. I went in the afternoon of Sunday, June 29. I was shopping for 2 dining chairs. Inside the store, most everything has big signs "don't touch! serious inquiries only"! In the display window, I saw some pale pink chairs that were perfect and I tried to shimmy around them without touching to find a price, but there weren't any price tags. I asked the person working there and she said everything's on the website so I should look there. I went out to my car and got my phone. I started scrolling through but it's very time-consuming & nothing I was looking for was on the website. I ask her again for a price & she ignored me. I go further back into the store but all the chairs are on a high shelf just underneath the ceiling, I'm 5'2. I asked her how could I shop for chairs I cant see or reach or touch. She again points me to their website, saying all info is there. Again, the chairs are not all listed on their site, for example the pink chairs in the display (I wish yelp would let me post a pic.) I try really hard to shop small & used, so I'm glad I remembered The Furniture Guy Consignment is right up Aurora & over on Greenwood N. Night & day experience, everything is displayed to be tested out, inspected & everything is priced. I was asked a couple of times "let us know what you need!" Anyway, in regards to BWC I thought it a bizarre business model & felt bad when I left. Just bought a credenza and a dresser from Big Whale and I'm very happy. Surprised at the negative reviews! Until 2018 I was an antique and vintage dealer in PA. Both these pieces were simple, good condition, used or vintage. The owner accepted a fair price offer for the two and arranged delivery. I bought a Lane dresser and a generic Danish modern teak credenza. Nicely cleaned, with appropriate signs of age: some fading of the wood, a few small scratches. Yes, they are some parts wood veneer over particle board with some solid wood elements--that is how mid-level manufactured furniture has been for many decades! The dresser drawers are dove-tailed, with oak boxes. The credenza also has dove-tailed drawers and the entire interior is lined with glowing teak veneer. (Not the melamine on mdf furniture you have to assemble, or cheap new knockoffs with stapled drawers, ultra thin veneers, and plastic interior elements.) Veneers on both these pieces are substantial and perfect, with no chipping, and give the look of solid wood. The shop has some new pieces marked as "mid-century style". Most furniture simply carries a price and a minimal description. Saw no false claims. After delivery, when I reported two missing screws from the drawer pulls, an owner came over, took a sample, and returned from a hardware store with quick, complete fix. Without my requesting that service or charging for it. Big Whale offers an inventory of good vintage furniture. Clean, fairly-priced, with good service. I recommend it. read more

DO NOT SHOP HERE THEY HAVE BEEN SCAMMING CUSTOMERS FOR AT LEAST 1 YEAR I'll start by saying I really wanted to love Big Whale Consignment (BWC). I've followed them on Instagram for years, and they have a lot of beautiful vintage furniture that I wish I could afford. That said, I no longer trust the people who run this business and I will no longer recommend them to friends. The back room at BWC is filled with new MCM-style furniture labeled and priced as solid wood ($800+), but these are actually made from laminated particleboard like most of what you see at IKEA. I only realized after a friend had finalized her purchase, and BWC has a strict no return policy. When we called BWC and told them the furniture was not solid wood, they seemed surprised and took 10% off the price--not as much as we would have liked but there wasn't much we could do. That might have been the end of it if I hadn't noticed that Wendy L. on Yelp had the exact same experience at BWC *****over a year ago.***** I'm now convinced that they know exactly what they are doing: using the halo effect from the high-quality, vintage furniture to move low-quality reproductions. They used to be a vintage-only store, and I'm guessing they weren't selling enough vintage furniture and had to resort to other means. That might have something to do with the fact that BWCs vintage inventory is so darn expensive, even for a hot MCM market in a city flush with new money. To customers, I recommend going to BWC to look at their vast inventory, finding styles that you like, and then shopping around at other vintage stores for similar styles, better prices, and good customer service. To BWC, I recommend hiring someone with vintage furniture expertise to reevaluate your prices and leaving the new particleboard furniture business to Wayfair. To Ella, if you're out there...I'm simply dying to know how this unicorn that you probably made for your 6th birthday party at a paint-your-own-pottery studio ended up for sale at Big Whale Consignment for $29.00. My wife basically had to drag me out of this store. Like, holy smokes. I haven't seen this much cool vintage furniture in one place in a very long time, if ever. I found a desk I really liked on Facebook Marketplace, and contacted the seller who replied quickly and was happy to answer any questions I had. We had to reschedule the viewing and pickup meeting due to rain, and they were really great with rescheduling, even on a weekend! We arrived to pick up the desk, and everything was exactly as shown, freshly polished, and the price was the same as advertised online! I honestly wish that more companies would operate with this level of integrity and understanding!! They were amazing and I would very happily buy more furniture from them in the future! read more

I would never recommend this business to anyone. Although they appear to have hundreds of beautiful midcentury and antique pieces, this business is run by shady, disorganized people who have been ripping customers off for years. To name only a few issues, they regularly falsely advertise and misname pieces (ex. "Solid wood" when it's veneer, "vintage" when it's new), price gouge everything well beyond an appropriate value, keep a disorganized and inaccurate inventory system, and are poorly responsive/helpful to inquiries and/or resolution for these known issues. Buy your vintage furniture literally anywhere else for an earthly price and avoid giving more money to these dishonest individuals taking advantage of people who just want quality vintage. I imagine the owner is just going to respond to this saying "you just don't understand how to price and curate a vintage collection like we do." They'll accuse every legitimate dissent of picking on their "small business." If you'll notice their response to every other negative review is something similar, I think the takeaway is that is their only defense. I purchased a few great pieces here and had a lovely time browsing their collection of goodies. I got a beautiful wood credenza that everyone compliments me on, a piece of art, a pot, and a unique glass ashtray. All for about $1.3k, which having looked around a lot for real wood credenzas, is great. The owner gave me a small discount on the credenza because it had a couple knicks; good customer service! They were also very helpful to move the piece out to my car and help me load it up, and wrapped my art to make sure it was safe. Overall, loved my first visit to this small business, and am looking forward to another visit some day! read more

Overpriced items. Uneducated albeit friendly staff. Confusing layout. Poor lighting. Furniture stacked so high and tightly you cannot easily view the entire piece. Dusty. Majority of inventory was very worn. When asked what the discount on 3 pieces I was considering, the clerk said $90. really, on a $3900 sale? That's about a 2% discount. I walked out and headed to their competition. All the things Big Whale lacked, Ballard Consignment had, in spades. Spent $2600 and got four beautiful pieces. read more

We have a final sale policy (which is quite standard in the vintage market) There are signs throughout the shop stating that And we confirm it before you purchase. As stated in all reviews, we are a no pressure shop, as we want you to be happy with your purchase: you review the item to your complete satisfaction and decide. I don't believe you should blame a business because you changed your mind on what you wanted (or what the facts are) This is what I feel is happening in this case and don't believe it's an honest review. Yes, you have a final sale policy, I noticed that. That is why I politely asked for an exchange, I never asked for a refund- you still keep every dollar that I had spent (and honestly since I doubt I would find another item equaling exactly what I originally spent, I would have probably spent more getting another piece to use up all of my store credit.) 2. We can Never and do not confirm the wood, only the stain color as it is a vintage item. We are consistent with this with everyone and every piece. Please refer to All the reviews in here. The shop rep hinted that it was walnut, although it's true they never guaranteed it to be any type of wood, they would hint at it, saying things like "furniture makers from this era often use walnut", it's "wood with walnut stain", etc. I walked in, not knowing much about MCM furniture, hoping the staff would know a bit more and be able to make good educated guesses. But they never told me the top was laminate- which it is, you can literally see the layer of plastic on the top. While you may not be able to guarantee the exact type of wood, I would have at least hoped they would have pointed out the laminate top. Had I known the composition I probably would've selected something different. 3. We only charged you $45 for delivery, we make sure to charge only 1/3 of what actual and standard delivery costs. We always ask that if you're able to pick up or arrange a third party, that's best. We assist in delivery as a courtesy to help customers get their furniture to their place conveniently. You charge $45 for curbside and $55 for delivery where someone actually helps you take it to your door. I stated $50 as it was the average. ------------- I came here looking for a MCM dresser. Firstly, they do have a wide selection of furniture and some fantastic pieces. However, I decided to give this 2 stars because of a few reasons. Firstly, the pricing. I regret not shopping around more before I purchased a dresser here, because afterwards I realized that their pricing is (as another reviewer had stated) definitely at a premium compared to other MCM shops in the area. Secondly, their knowledge of what they sell is pretty lacking. I didn't know much about what to look for when I went in and asked what they thought the dresser I was interested in was made of. They said 'walnut veneer.' I ended up purchasing it because I at least know that walnut is a very sturdy, good quality wood for furniture. After the purchase, I noticed the top of the dresser was really smooth- like plastic-y smooth. I asked again if they were sure it was walnut. Suddenly their answer changed to 'it's definitely a wood, with walnut stain' - what? I did some research after and found that the top is actually laminate- which is plastic and not even wood at all. I asked for an exchange after they also added that they didn't know who the furniture maker/manufacturer was, and was told that all items are final sale, even when they were misleading with answering questions before I made my purchase. In addition, they are also charging $50 just to move it a few miles when in total I spent almost $750 (incl tax) on this unlabeled dresser. I'm more just kicking myself for not doing more research before purchasing. read more

I was on the lookout for good coffee table for my new house. BigWhale Consignment caught my attention during a bus trip. This shop has become my togo place for any furniture and decorative items. The staff are very friendly and are ready to answer all my queries without putting on airs. The shop has a wide variety of decorative arts. You have to set time to look for the right item. As for the people who have complained of price, i would say you get what you pay for. Cheap stuff are available every where. We had been searching for a dresser that was a decent price and high quality for a few weeks. Most of the dressers we were finding online were either crazy expensive or looked like they were terrible quality, so we started searching for local options. After searching the internet for consignment stores that posts their available furniture online, I came across Big Whale Consignment and I'm so happy I did! I reached out via phone to see if the dresser we were interested in was still available. Demi answered the phone and answered every question I had. We scheduled a time to check out the dresser 30 minutes after our call. They were scheduling appointments because of COVID-19, which we appreciated. Our big concern was delivery, as I have a small car and wouldn't be able to transport it to our home. Luckily, they offered a really great price for same-day delivery! We purchased the dresser and 3 hours later, we now have it in our home! Demi and the other person (so sorry I don't know your name if you're reading this) who helped us out were fantastic and had amazing customer service. A week ago I stopped into Big Whale and saw an amazing chair. Given the cramped conditions I could only look at it. Today, I phoned to ask if they would be able to take the chair down so I could sit in it---I have been thinking about this chair for a week. I was told that it was moved to storage and only available on line due to staffing issues. This is a *very* expensive piece so I'm not willing to buy it without sitting in it. The call was extremely awkward where the person basically said "that's the situation" and not 'wow, you're interested in that chair, let's see what we can do for you' or "would you like us to look out for other pieces." Basically I got the sense that they didn't actually want business due to short staffing. This does not make me want to go back to this store. read more

This is probably the most overpriced mid century store in the entire country. Half their inventory comes from Portland area mid century stores, and the other half from local Auction houses like MBA. Shop around in the NW for a bit and you will find this stuff for about half of what they charge. (That seems to be their stranded retail markup regardless of the quality or condition) I also like to shop at stores where the sellers are knowledgeable collectors which is definitely not these people. read more

Bought a credenza from BWC. The whole process was fast, smooth and pleasant. The owner is honest and straightforward about the material and condition of the credenza. It is indeed lightly used and mostly real wood. The price is really reasonable comparing to other merchants. The delivery company they work with wrapped the credenza with blankets so it was delivered without a single scratch. I am getting more affordable quality furniture from BWC. read more
