Christy was finishing up a client and asked that I not be shampooed before she saw my hair since I was a new client. She was very engaging and gave me the best cut and style. Amy Dugan is amazing! She removed my hair extensions and gave me a nice new fresh 'do! She has almost 20 years of experience and offers a multitude of services to include bonded hair extensions. The salon is very clean and up-to-date. The front desk personnel are very kind and friendly. Make sure you bring cash for a tip as you cannot add a tip to your credit card. Now that I'm older, menopausal and graying every two weeks I needed a colorist! I can't even explain the attention I was given. From the owner to the expert colorist and my hairstylist I came out looking fabulous. They corrected all the problems that come from NOT having a professional colorist. I'm a guy, so I always have that hint of a weird 'out of place' feeling whenever I'm going to a new place to get my hair cut. So, as a downside to moving to a new city, I had to find a new place. I went first to Capelli's on a Saturday morning on a recommedation... and, well... 2 stars. The good things: Location is easy to get to, parking in that strip mall that they're in off of Poplar isn't an issue. There are many different stylists to choose from there, and you can even see them online if you'd like. Many people go there, and like it a lot... so, that must mean something, right? The bad things: It's not welcoming... and that's always the "ugh" feeling of when you walk into a new place and say immediately "I don't like it"... you just know, I'm not sure how, but you do. The layout is akward and you have to walk around people and in between stations that are crammed too close together. On a busy Saturday morning, it is very loud and a bit chaotic, and your stylist might even have multiple people that he/she is working on (mine did), and it really takes away from the experience. So look, if you find the right person to cut your hair and they know how to chat it up for a bit, it generally doesn't matter about the place or the other people around you... but I'll say, having been to what seems like 50 or so different places to get my haircut in my travels... that Capelli just didn't make the cut. One word: Megan! I have very long, straight hair and generally trust anyone to cut it. It is easy to fix if someone screws it up. So I looked to Yelp for a hair place and got Megan by the luck of the draw. She took only a bit off on length and helped me by giving me some awesome layers. She took the time to teach me some styling tricks and didn't give me an aggressive sales pitch for products, just some sincere suggestions. My cut was $55 plus tip and worth every penny. I even had great conversation with her, not about the weather and other boring stuff, but about payola and the music industry! The salon is big! The have complimentary water, juice, cookies etc at the entrance, so you will feel fancy! They were courteous on the phone. This was a great experience for me and will hold out on my next cut until my next visit to Memphis! read more

I have been to Capelli many times and it has become an unpleasant place. It is dirty and run down. The owner is notoriously frugal and it shows. And it has become very difficult to reach the front desk as the competent workers have been let go because they wanted fair wages. The new people do not answer the phone (because they come in late) or put you on hold for too long. However, the stylist are good and are friendly, but the owner just glares at people. It has become a rather chaotic and creepy place. read more

Three stars because Mina is a genius with blonde hair. With that being said, this salon is well, different. Their extremely upscale vibe can be a little off-putting and intimidating. Yes they are awesome at what they do, but when I'm paying $200+ dollars for highlights I think its HIGHLY unprofessional to upon arrival, have ME let my stylist know that I'm there...isn't that the receptionist's job? I have been to many salons and never once had this happen to me. It's awkward, especially when they haven't finished with their current client... My other complaint is it seems like you're on an assembly line, again.. not what you would imagine at a high end hair salon. I'll just address what needs to be addressed about Capelli right off the bat. This place is totally chi-chi. Yeah, I said it. It's as upscale as hair gets in Memphis and you'll feel it the second you walk through the doors. From the fancy schmancy bead-drapes hanging in the windows to the designer hair stylist stations with ultra fab drawer knobs, super cute mirrors and daily fresh flowers in a built-in vase- it screams decadence. Let us not fail to give a nod to the fresh coffee, popcorn, cookies and soda section you can help yourself to. There are few things in life better than a day of pampering- nails, hair, the works. Everything Capelli lays out in ambiance only adds to this experience. Yes, but Erica B, I'm not there for ambiance I'm there to get a good hair cut/color/style/etc. Don't fret, Capelli has you covered there as well. I had the privilege of being a part of Capelli's apprentice program back when I was doing hair and let me say, I learned more in the 6 months I was there than I did my entire time in beauty school. The stylists here are on top of their game. Say what you will about attitudes, not being comfortable here, it's too expensive- pshhhh whatever. If you want good hair- you're golden with any stylist that works behind a chair here. No joke. If you want your color done- go to Heidi. You may wait for that appointment and you may pay an arm and a leg- but you will walk out with a phenomenal head of hair. Haircut? Again, if you've got the time to wait- book with Lynn, the owner. What she is capable of doing with a pair of scissors is just sheer genius. I think my favorite part of Capelli is that as a client, you can go in and get color done anytime- no appointment. Yes, you heard me correctly. This won't include any cut or styling afterward, but color- yes. Anytime- no appointment. How does this work you ask? The stylists here do not apply color to their clients- they can and will if they aren't busy or booked- but for the most part an apprentice or shampoo tech will apply it. This means you can walk in anytime, they can grab your color card, your stylist will come over and double check that your formula doesn't need any tweaking and you are good to go. This is one of the smartest methods I've ever encountered- especially for women who need touch ups on the regular and don't have the sense to book ahead of time. Is Capelli busy? Yes. Is Capelli expensive? Yes. Is Capelli a bit stuffy? Yes. Are you going to be satisfied with your hair- definitely. And in the end, isn't that the reason you're going in the first place? read more

I had heard good things about Capelli and was excited to go in for a blow dry and style today. Unfortunately, my experience was truly awful. My stylist repeatedly pulled my hair, and it was extremely painful. I asked him to dry it in such a way that there would be curls (something VERY easy to do). Rather than doing what I asked, he dried it straight and curled it, charging me extra for this and creating a style I didn't like, and one that won't last more than a few hours (I got the service in order to have my hair styled for the weekend). Lastly, the spray he used (without asking me beforehand) left my usually soft hair feeling like dry straw. In short, I will NOT be going back. Instead, I'll be washing my hair tonight and styling it on my own. read more

Love it! I had my very long, curly hair cut to donate to Pantene beautiful lengths program. Julie did an amazing job! Best blow out I've ever had. Typically stylist straighten but make my hair huge in the process. My hair has so much natural volume that I like it to be sleek if I'm getting it professionally blown out. Julie did just this! I just got my hair colored from this salon. I paid $170 dollars and was so unhappy with it. I asked to go lighter with lots of highlights, they colored me darker with 6 thick ugly highlights! I asked them to fix it or give me my money back. They said they would fix it. Then charged me another $50. So I paid $220 and still not happy. read more

Ms. Lynn at Capelli is absolutely amazing! She knows exactly how to transform your hair, what color is best for your skin tone/eye color and how to cut your hair to complement your face. She brought my lifeless brown hair back to life! The staff is very professional, accommodating and friendly. I had a wonderful experience and would definitely recommend this place if you are looking to get the best cut and color in Memphis! You definitely get what you pay for and then some. Mina is the most amazing colorist. She is a blondes dream. I've been going here for a while, and I refuse to go anywhere else to get my highlights. It's a busy place, and you may have to wait a while to book an appointment. I've gotten hair extensions there, and loved them. A little expensive, but they were beautiful. The price of the salon services are a little more than I want to pay, but the end result is well worth it. You have to pay extra for a blow dry, so I just walk out with a wet head. No biggie. Ok so today I tried Capelli for a cut and color. What a joke! These people are nuts and especially the lady that did my hair today. Why did i leave with dripping wet hair you ask? Wish I could answer that. According to the staff, 140 bones doesnt cover a blow dry. So i go around town the rest of today looking like I'm heading to a rehearsal for CATS. She gave me side swept bangs and when I asked her to show me how to fix them, she instructed me to "just grab the bangs and tuck em behind your ear. Its called faux bangs" Um, wtf did you just say to me? My 3 hour torture session included combing my lower back length wet hair straight upwards with a fine toothed comb. OUCH!!! Don't try this at home. No bueno. She also had to leave to go to parking lot to make a transaction with her brother. What does that even mean?!?! This review barely scratches the surface of the antics going on in that place. read more

Over priced cookie cutter hair cut; throughout the duration of the haircut, the hairdresser barely talked to me except when trying to attempt to diagnose the reason for the dryness of my hair. Why would you ask me if I was on medications that might make my hair dry on my first visit without building a client-hairdresser relationship. Odd if you ask me. The hair dresser seemed irritated when I didn't understand what partial or full meant long after we talked about highlights (hint: maybe you should have asked me that question right after we talked about highlights)! Keep in mind this is my first time there ever. Younger hair dressers that worked there including my hairdresser seemed snobby and were more consumed with their personal lives....would it kill you to smile and say hello??? The only person that was nice and had a smile was the front desk personnel. Would you pay 170$ including tip for partial highlights and a amateur hair cut???? Maybe if my highlights were gold plated! Lots of people have commented on my hair looking like I went to fantastic SAMs ... I can get the same hair cut for 17$ probably! I want to say how disappointed I am by this salon. I booked my wedding hair and make-up trials early in March for my wedding in August at the salon. I decided to hire them for my wedding after paying $170 for the trial from the stylist, Amy Hicks. I told Amy that my wedding would be August 30 in the morning, and that I need to start getting ready at 7 AM. At the time, the stylist agreed to perform the services at 7 AM. I signed a contract with the salon to provide services for my wedding, and they said they would send me a copy (which they did not). A month later, I received a voicemail from Sandy stating that Amy was unable to do my hair at 7 AM, and that she would be available at a later time if I could move my start time to my wedding; otherwise I needed to find someone else. As you can imagine, I was extremely surprised by the rude and arrogant voicemail. I immediately called and several times was told me to call back on Tuesdays when the wedding stylist was available. I finally spoke with someone (Heather?), and she stated that no one else would be available at 7AM that day. I asked for a copy of the contact, and Heather stated she would email it to me later that day. I asked for a refund for the trial, and she gave the phone to the office manager, Katrina, who stated the owner, Lynn Shea, was out of town. The following time I called when Lynn was supposed to have returned, Katrina stated she was still out of the country, and she claimed that they had lost the contract. She said the most that could be refunded for the services is half of the amount paid. She offered a maximum of $70, and I said I was dissatisfied with this since they unilaterally canceled our contract with such short notice. Katarina responded that "it's only $70, it's not a big deal." At this point, I said I would just call back for the owner as I was not receiving the assistance that I needed. Katarina informed me that I would not be able to speak with the owner and that this is final. Multiple attempts after this I attempted to reach the owner when she was present, and I left my information to reach a resolution before writing this review. The last time I was told she does not take calls at this number, but you can leave your name and number and she will decide whether to get back to you. I have never encountered such an unprofessional business with arrogant and disrespectful staff. As you can imagine, this experience has caused me a lot of anxiety and stress and wasted countless hours of my valuable time in speaking with the staff and trying to finding another salon. I would highly suggest everyone stay away from this salon at all costs! This is not how an establishment should conduct business, and I would save yourself the headache if you are considering using any of their services and go somewhere else. So I came into the salon having a mid-life hair crisis meets Britney Spears meets Amanda Bynes cloned with Courtney Love. From what I just said I'd be guilty by assumption of being on every drug in the book, but in all honesty I was mauled but a lion in Africa while mentoring small kids. ....kidding. Okay, I had extensions and one month of poor self-maintenance, using the humid disgusting heat as an excuse to throw my hair in one of those "sexy working woman" buns ...without brushing it...ever. So I have now bloomed worlds biggest matted hair ball on earth and I have Tack at Capelli to thank for fixing this RuPaul of a disaster. He's amazing, patient, funny, and made me no longer contemplate taking my reputation to rest by shaving my head. If he can fix the manifested hair animal on my head....he can can part the sea like Moses in my book. I HIGHLY recommend going to him for anything. I tried a few other places in high school, but nothing compared. I have been going to Megan for about 6-7 years now, and I have never been disappointed with my hair. She is also extremely helpful in telling you what you should do to maintain your hair after you leave. She has always told me what products to buy, and she is so not the person to make you buy something you don't need. For a just-out-of-college, just-got-my-first-job kind of girl, it is expensive. But SO worth it! You most definitely get what you pay for. Megan goes above and beyond, and that's because that is just who she is! read more
