We are 'seasoned' travelers and have gone on MANY whale & dolphin watching tours from Cape May, Cape Cod, Florida, Alaska, etc... and have actually used the Cape May Whale Watcher in the past and had no big complaints. But on Sunday (7/30/17) my husband and I took our 3 daughters and Japanese exchange student on one of their dolphin tours (10 a.m.) and it proved to be the WORST experience we have ever had on such a tour! Evidently a 'Nor'easter' had gone through the day before (we knew it had rained- didn't realize it was quite that bad) and this meant EXTREMELY chopping waters for our tour on Sunday. What made matters worse is that this didn't seem to affect the Captain of this boat in the least as he cut across waves, bumping along wildly at what felt like ridiculous speeds at times- people could barely stand, let alone walk on the boat. A couple 'warnings' for people outside (who evidently could NOT hear the announcement) of potentially getting wet/sprayed by waves was given (we heard it inside where we watched in wide eye wonder!) but the crying, soaked from head to toe children (and adults) was frightening- as they stumbled and fell outside the cabin trying to get their children inside. We were horrified to see a woman bringing her Down Syndrome baby inside the cabin- completely drenched and soaked- water dripping off the poor child's head like she had just been thrown in the deep end of a pool fully clothed! A handicapped woman in a wheelchair that could not fit in a covered/sheltered area simply had to endure the elements and wild ride... getting completely soaked- the boat felt like it could capsize at any moment! People were getting sick... kids were whining and crying... it was HORRIBLE and completely took any joy of spotting the few dolphins in the area away. What made matters even worse- was the ride was SO upsetting and scary, I actually called their office from the BOAT and was treated horribly by their customer service person. I was then called back on my cell phone a few minutes after complaining by a Captain (of our boat or another I have no idea!) that tried to convince me I was calling and complaining to the wrong whale watching company (I wasn't- obviously!) and when he asked what color boat we were on and I told him it was WHITE (3/4 of the boat from top to below midline is WHITE with red letting- the BOTTOM portion is red, which is basically hidden from view when docked and when on board the boat) he told me their boats are RED which 'proved' I had called the 'wrong' company! PLEASE!!! He then got on the intercom and made a nauseating and condescending announcement about NOT trying to tell him how to manage 'his boat', etc... so we realized we had better just hold on for dear life- hope we made it back safely- and try to talk with someone in the ticket office. Boy was THAT a joke!! We docked...and we were SHOCKED at the hundreds standing in line waiting to go out on their next tour... trust me, I *felt like* warning these people- but refrained... and simply went to their ticket booth. I told the woman (Brigid Stewart, who is evidently the wife or daughter of the Captain who's name was Jeff Stewart) about what happened- and that I was the one who had called during the boat ride- and how awful it was, etc... and she acted like I was a complete imbecile for complaining... but she would 'tell the Captain' (yeah, her husband- like THAT was really going to do a thing) and then some heavy set older guy in the ticket booth jumped up- waving a brochure at me- saying their boats are RED (as if it this REALLY mattered??) and was mad I called their boat WHITE ?!! Seriously... their boats are 3/4 WHITE with a lower portion being RED and they are all flipping out over this?! The whole point of calling DURING the ride was to alert them of what was happening as we had no idea if the captain was impaired in some way either from distractions, drugs, alcohol... or ?? we just felt that whatever his reasons were for continuing into such dangerous waves and windy conditions- it had become unsafe- and we no longer trusted his judgement!! My reason in going to their ticket booth AFTER was (as I already stated) to let them know I had called about THEIR boat, THEIR captain, THEIR company- not another that they were trying to blame!! I never once mentioned or requested a refund from them- though I was falsely accused of that later by their ticket employee. We would highly recommend another company (they have a similar name and are near by) that we have also used, and found the polar opposite of the Cape May Whale Watcher... being professional, feeling safe, knowledgeable, and FUN! Soooo... ride with caution- and NEVER ride with them after a Nor'easter... and if you do- don't say you weren't properly warned! Oh... and their boat IS white with a red lower portion- no matter WHAT they want you to believe!! ha!! read more

Ahhhhh finally went on a whale and dolphin watch tour. This was pretty cool. I went in with low expectations as nature will do, what nature will do. There's not guarantee you will see any kind of mammals (even though the captain said it is). The 10AM cruise came back a bit later than expected, we were supposed to board around 1230 but the people from the previous tour we just getting off the boat at that time. Once on the boat, it is asked that everyone must be seating while the boat takes off. Nice introduction from the captain Jeff. The crew was nice and helpful throughout the whole entire tour. We decided to walk around and see if there was a better viewing point than the right side seating of the boat, plus the sun was really shining. Went to the front of the boat on the left hand side. After a few people emptied out the very front of the boat, we decided to move.... that was the wrong move. There is no solid floor in this section and the water just splashes everywhere once the boat starts going. After being up there and seeing tons of beautiful dolphins, we decided to move to a different part of the boat to dry off. It was getting pretty crazy but I like to see that as part of the whole experience. We used the restrooms and went to the back of the boat. You can go anywhere on the boat pretty much, just keep both feet on the ground if not, the captain or the crew will come for you. Just watching out for your safety. Lots of great information bits and the captain kept us in the loop as to which side to look on and always was moving the boat from side to side to ensure both left and right side got a view of these wonderful mammals. I was surprised to see SO many people seasick. This one little kid was in the booth with no parental supervision, sleeping.... lots of variety of people on the boat. Inside the cabin mostly everyone had their head down, either sleeping or sick. It was a rocky ride, so bring some Dramamine if you are prone to getting sick on the boat to ensure you enjoy the sightings. The whale part of the trip was a bit trickier since there was only one or two whales in comparison to the groups of dolphins seen earlier in the tour. The whales seem to be more shy. Definitely need to be in the front of the boat to catch them before they go down under. After all is said and done, I would do this tour again. The crew was nice, had some riddles to entertain the crowd and answer your questions. Jeff, the captain was very knowledgeable. Boat ride was a bit bumpy but all part of the experience. read more

It was very exciting to see live dolphins unclose and personal the way my family and I did. The reason this gets 3 stars is that I felt the staff didn't do much when it came to safety precautions. Had the Best Whale Watch ever thru Cape May Whale Watcher!! (after going to Massachusetts twice). The Crew was excellent, friendly & answering any questions and the Captain providing information as we went along. Unfortunately we didn't see any whales...the captain tried his best by calling out to other vessels in the area to see if they had seen any, but the pods of Dolphins including the baby calves was tops in my book! The Vessel had plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We could not bring any coolers onboard but, they had soda, water, adult beverages, fresh Pizza, hot dogs, candy, chips etc. They did not over charge for refreshments as you will sometimes see from other establishments. This was a 3 hour tour that did not disappoint! Had a fantastic time and highly recommend this tour!! I live in DE and took the Cape May/Lewes Ferry over as a foot passenger. Uber brought us right to our destination. Would not advice taking the trolley to the Cape May visitor stop. Was told it was only a 1/2 mile walk...much further then that. read more

Went on a two-hour tour this weekend to show kids some dolphins. Apparently you are only allowed to have a stroller inside, where kids couldn't see anything.. Even though it wasn't too crowded and we didn't block anyone. Shouldn't tell that strollers are allowed if technically you are not allowed to have it for your child. Can't imagine it being any different for a wheelchair, even though advertised as ada compliant. Such a waist of time and $100 Kids couldn't enjoy the trip and were not able to see the dolphins from the inside of the boat. Disappointing. read more

Went as a party of 7 during the eclipse on 8/21/17 We thought we had a Groupon and Reservation but turned out I was thinking about this company when I bought a Groupon/reservation for a similarly named company (The Cape May Whale watch and research center). They kindly gave us directions to the dock where the other Boat operated from. After arriving an hour early, were turned away from them because they overbooked the Eclipse cruise, disregarding our reservation and Groupon. In desperation I called Cape May Whale Watcher to see if they still had seats available, I explained that we were the group that showed up with the wrong Groupon and that we were turned away from the other company. The person told me that he had plenty of room for us and to head over, our seats were safe! It was a great trip! We saw a lot of Dolphins, a Bald Eagle, some osprey but no whales (not for lack of trying!) We were honestly just looking for a unique way to view the Eclipse, now we're fans of Dolphin watching and boat rides. The Kids loved every minute of it! Very smooth ride on calm seas, the commentary from the captain was funny and educational. You can tell he really loves what he does. We cant wait to go back for one of their other trips. read more

For several years my family has taken the Cape May Whale Watcher dolphin and whale cruises, and found them enjoyable, educational and relaxing. The end of last summer (2017) we once again took a dolphin tour, but this time noticed a big change in the staff and their attitude. From parking in their lot, which we were blocked in to the rude mate mate on the ship the visit was different. The staff used to be friendly and respectful toward guests, but not this trip. I had slipped my flip flops off a second while sears, and one of the young mates came over and very rudely informed me I needed my shoes on, I explained I was just stretching a minute and he spoke to me in a condescending manner and words that I did not appreciate. Before posting this review, And immediately after our tour I contacted the Cape May Watcher and was given the excuse that they were busy that day, and the staff were under pressure. This didn't help, even after explaining we have been on the tour many times. From now on we will use another dolphin tour company, as their are plenty in the area. Be careful who you book with, as someone else will appreciate your patronage more than the Cape May Whale Watcher. read more

We came for the 10AM departure for a 2.5 hour whale & dolphin watching as a weekend special. My SO purchased a groupon like a year ago that expired, but we were still able to use the face value of 50$ I had a reason 'eh' moments with my experience though 1. The gentleman assisting and telling us where to park, had a bit of a nasty attitude. A vibe of 'I really don't want to be here.' 2. Purchase your tickets online, there is a special for buy 1, get 1 half off weekend special, when we asked about it in person, they tried to give us a hard time, which is kind of crappy because I could have easily gotten off the line, purchased it online and showed them. So after those moments, we boarded the boat and got things rolling. The natural life around the area is amazing, you were able to see multiple eagle habitats, and we were actually able to see an eagle (Merica'!) The captain was extremely knowledge about the history and kept us entertained. It was a but humid and gloomy out, but that didn't change much. We were able to see quite a few dolphins out, however no whales, which was slightly disappointing but understandable. Overall, it was an ok experience. I've been whale watching many times before in Boston at Cape Ann and it was amazing, so this spot definitely doesn't compare. read more

The whale watching experience itself isn't bad. The problem is the bloody customer service from the Cape May Whale Watcher company. First off, they don't answer emails promptly. Secondly, they don't return phone call messages either. I sent two emails and left 1 message. I waited a whole week and no response. When I called again during my lunch hour at work, I finally got a hold of someone and part of me wishes that I hadn't. The person I spoke to (apparently the boat owner) was rude, mean and incredibly hostile. All I did was call the customer service hotline to ask questions about how to make a reservation when redeeming a KGB Deal voucher (especially given that there were no instructions about the matter at the time of purchase nor is there any information on the company website) and what to expect on that day. The boat owner ended up hanging up on me when I called him/her (feminine quality voice but very deep masculine tone) out on their unwarranted rudeness. Seriously, don't expect the nicest bit of help from whoever this boat owner is because frankly he/she doesn't know how to do business very well. read more

We have gone many times to celebrate brate a birthday every May. One time the captain stopped in the area where the dolphins were and when he took off the dolphins followed us playing with the waves from the ship. I have framed on of the photographs of four dolphins airborne withe the waves and is on our wall in our cottage. Very rare to see whales, and we did not see any. According to the crew, whales at Cape May are migratory so they don't have any established feeding grounds or places for the ship to look for whales. When one of the local boats reports a siting, the boats in the area all try to find it, but the area is so large that it's like finding a needle in a haystack. Our crew did say that one of the other boats had seen a whale the previous week, but no luck for us. We did see some dolphins. Great experience! Husband and I have gone twice, and probably again when we make it back to NJ. The dolphins get quite close to the boat, so if you're quick it's a great photo opportunity. So we decided to take the 1pm whale watch for 3 hours. It was the fun in the beginning but then it got so boring. There were about 80-100 people on the boat and those sitting inside were so nauseated, everyone was laying down. We did see a bunch of dolphins but we saw no whales. This was a great experience. We got to see bottle nose dolphins, Fish, Sting Rays, rare types of birds, unfortunately no Whale this time. Here is a list of things not provided by the company that are important: -If you are on the outside bottom deck, you will get wet! -There is no guarantee to see a whale, but you will 100% see marine life of some sort. -You can open a tab for the whole trip at the snack bar. -Parking is very hard, get there early. Really cool afternoon out on the whale and dolphin watching tour. We didn't see any whales, but seeing the tons of dolphins and being out on the open water made it completely worth it. We had a groupon too, which made the deal amazing. The tour guide for the family-run company was great - informative and interesting, and quite inspiring. I'm certainly more antagonistic to keeping dolphins in captivity knowing now that they live only a small fraction of the normal lifespan. And who knew that dolphins were horny?! He didn't overdo it either. The young staff was friendly and helpful. We got there a bit early, so we had time to check out the little gift shop and the bait-shop/ snack place. Nice touch, but hold off on the snacks since there are better options on the boat if you're lookin for a nosh. Bring a waterproof light jacket (or poncho), binoculars, camera (preferably with a strap - i was worried for my cell phone) and sunglasses, and you're all set. We started out on the roof, migrated to the front of the boat, and wound up at the tables inside, a touch seasick. If you're not on boats in the ocean much, take Bonine or Dramamine before the boat launches just to be safe because once you hit the open ocean, it's choppy. Restrooms were available and not too gross. Oh and I'd recommend not wearing a sundress like I did - had an accidental Marilyn Monroe moment! A little rain and lack of whales didn't ruin the experience at all. It was overall great! I'd absolutely go back and recommend it to others. read more

I think this is the best tour in the cape. I've been taking trips with them (and others) for almost 20 years. Day trips, sunset trips, firework trips and air show trips. They always find dolphins. Sightseeing around the cape. Always speak out for leaving the Dolphins unmolested. Always informative about them. Good natured and fun. So with this Dolphin cruise that my boyfriend and I went on (we did the 6pm 2 hour cruise). You get guaranteed that you see Dolphins, which we did. And you get free Pizza and Hotdogs (amazing). This was an awesome experience. I've been on many dolphin watches in various states, but this was by far my favorite. First off I love any kind of family business. Second you could just tell in his voice that the captain had the utmost respect for the animals. He talked quite a bit and knew so many interesting little facts about the marine life and the area. He estimated that we were watching over a hundred dolphins because they were popping up everywhere. Overall our experience was great. No complaints whatsoever. My group consisted of four adults, plus one child age 3. We all had an amazing time. Although we knew going into this that there was a good chance of NOT seeing a whale, we thought it would be worth the chance, if we saw one or not. We felt this was a special opportunity to perhaps see one for real. We were in luck! Just as we were about to give up all hope of seeing a whale, and began to accept that merely seeing bunches of dolphins would have to be good enough, -- we got to see a 35-foot humpback whale. There were excellent views with plenty of chances to photograph. Views lasted a good long while, too. The boat was clean, including the bathrooms. My wife also enjoyed a cocktail which was delicious, strong, and not too expensive. I just want to add a few things more, because I see that there are some people here who are posting strongly negative reviews. Firstly, my party bought our tickets well in advance of the trip. We understood that the tickets were not equivalent to boarding passes, and that we were not necessarily guaranteed to ride. It's all pretty easy to understand, but please take the time to read all the fine print in advance so you thoroughly understand all the policies and procedures. We arrived more than 40 minutes prior to departure. That is very important if you want to be sure to ride. As the departure time grows near, they may begin to turn away valid ticket holders. Once the boarding passes have been issued to the boat's full capacity, they do not issue any more boarding passes for that ride. That means you could still be turned away even though you legitimately bought a ticket in advance. Please, once again, read and understand the policies! Another thing is that I highly suggest phoning ahead more than a day in advance, to get a telephone reservation for the specific ride you want. The phone reservation is still not a total guarantee, but it does help. If you phone ahead more than a day in advance, and you arrive more than 40 minutes early you are likely to be set for your ride. Also please note that the whales are wild creatures. It is impossible to predict if you will see one on your ride or not. My family accepted that we might or might not see one. We consider ourselves extremely lucky to have gotten the rare opportunity to glimpse such a wonderful and beautiful creature in the wild. It was our very first time on any whale watching expedition. Such incredible luck! Lastly, there are some basic facts about boat travel: 1) motion sickness, aka "seasickness," is very common on such rides. My wife is prone to seasickness, so she took some medicine beforehand, which helped. My son has never been on a boat, so we gave him some children's medicine. He got sleepy and took a nap, but he did not feel ill. I have a very strong stomach and I am usually not prone to motion sickness... so I didn't take any medicine at all. Even I felt just a tiny, slight tinge of mild nausea... but it wasn't bad and I didn't actually get sick. Other riders on the boat weren't so lucky. Many others did feel very ill and one person unfortunately did vomit on deck. The crew was very professional and immediately cleaned it up as if nothing happened. I'm sure they see it constantly. So... please be aware of this basic fact about boat rides: lots of people do indeed get seasick. Don't be shocked if you or somebody on board gets ill. Prepare in advance with appropriate measures. 2) The boat sometimes rocks quite violently. This is not the captain's fault. It should come as no big surprise that boat travel is very unsteady. You may easily loose your balance, fall, and get injured. This is a predictable component of sea travel. Please understand this in advance. You could slip and fall on the boat, so it would be best if you stay seated, especially if you are unsteady on your feet on a violently rocking boat. If you do get up, then you should hold on to something! All boats of this size are prone to being rocked around. So please expect it and deal with it in a safe manner. It's also true that boat decks can get wet with spills. There are drinks served on board, and also there is seawater all around. The boat deck can be wet sometimes, which could contribute to falling and the risk of injury. As long as you know what to expect, and take care of yourself and your family, you will be perfectly fine. Nobody in my group fell or got hurt in any way. That's all I have to say. It looks like the majority of major complaints on this rating site show that people either failed to understand the policies in advance, or were unfamiliar with the realities of what a whale-watching boat ride would entail. Plan ahead and understand what you are getting into. If you are smart and take care of yourself, you may just get very lucky and see some amazing marine wildlife -- We did! read more

Okay so being from the NYC area I just want to start this off with, the sunset dinner sail really has no dress code. I figured as much so I dressed semi nice. But in case anyone is wondering there is that. I don't think they actually go far enough to see whales but we did see a whole lot of dolphins! The tour guide was very informative and told us all about the surrounding area and pointed out different points of interest, like the cement ship that used to do transatlantic routes until it sank off the coast of cape may. Apparently by the lighthouse we were on top of Victorian houses that had succumbed to the sea. Also about the wildlife and of course the Dolphins. We even saw them breaching. The food itself was decent. Nothing fancy but pretty good. And the beer was cheap. It was a nice evening spent with the boyfriend just relaxing and looking at the Dolphins and eating and drinking on a boat. Their gift shop is also really nice and extremely cheap. read more

Have always been happy with our experience on their tours. The captain is engaging and informative and always gives a heads up when there are dolphins surfacing. We have not been on a tour since the pandemic so cannot speak to that experience, but would not hesitate to go out again. We have been on the day tours and sunset tours and the crew has always been courteous and helpful. read more
