Chinese food is my favorite. I'm from NY and always trying to find a good restaurant in LA. The pork fried rice is as close as you can get. It's delicious and lots of pieces of pork in it love the flavor and they give you a great amount. I had enough for 2 days. I also ordered the pork ribs. They were huge I think about 4 pieces but I have to admit I would never order it again. The meat was so tough I actually end up throwing most of it out. I tried cutting the meat off the bone didn't work What a waste it cost a lot. but I definitely will come back it's a big menu and they have lots of other good food there . We never tried Canton Low while we lived here, but after moving to Mexico City, my husband was craving Chinese food during our visit. The owner was very kind and was happy to speak with my husband in Cantonese. The ambience is casual Chinese and I enjoyed watching the Chinese drama on the big screen. The food here appeals to the local palate as would be expected from the large and happy clientele. My husband was the only Chinese person. The hot and sour soup was pretty good. It was neither sour nor spicy, but it had good ingredients and reasonable flavor. The Yang Chow Fried Rice had abundant, large pieces of meat, chicken and shrimp. I don't eat meat, but tasted some rice. It had a strong charred flavor. My husband doesn't like fried rice with meat in large pieces, but thought the rice was acceptable. The kung pao chicken was more like sweet and sour chicken, but a darker color. It was batter fried and came in a super sweet cornstarch sauce with peanuts and water chestnuts. There was no spice, but there was Sriracha and chile on the table. My husband thought it was okay and ate it, but I did not. The hot tea was quite good. Portions are generous. If you like chop suey and sweet and sour pork, this is the ideal place for you. read more

Hmm...lots of bad reviews. I don't know why. I liked Canton Low. My pal Mr. Chen liked it too - and he eats a lot of Asian food, Chinese included. Having lost my local Culver City Chinese Restaurant go-tos (Golden China to fire and New Flavors to developers) I stumbled on Canton Low while driving through El Segundo, and on a whim stopped in. Turned out to be the best spontaneous decision! The menu has all the typical Chinese favorites, and an extremely reasonable Dinner menu with different pricing options. (They also have a lunch menu...can't wait to try that!) The staff is welcoming, literally greeting everyone who walks in the door. Upon seating, they bring over the fun fried noodles with hot mustard and ketchup. The wait time is reasonable and there's a quaint pleasure in watching the immense take out business they do. The food is fresh and yummy. The portions are very generous, and especially the dinner specials which include a cup of soup, egg roll, fried shrimp and salad. Like many here, I like the food too, but there are inconveniences in the food. Perhaps some cooks prepare meals differently. My first visit with my wife was great for takeout. However, my wife and one of her girlfriends came last week and each one received a dish they did not order. I had requested Curried Shrimp and received Curried Chicken. Her girl received an beef and broccoli dish she did not order. Not sure what she had requested. My wife called the restaurant and they were remorseful and said they would replace it, but I told my wife to disregard. This should have been resolved by reviewing her order prior to leaving the restaurant. The first time we went a female brought our order out and she took everything out of the box and identified each dish. FYI the Curried Chicken was greasy. We were in the mood for Chinese food and decided to give Canton Low restaurant a try. And I'm glad we did. Service was excellent and the food was amazing and plentiful. a good place to get your peking duck fix on the westside/south bay, considering there are hardly any places on the westside for good peking duck. i wish the dish came with cucumbers and thin rice paper wraps instead of these gigantic flour tortilla wraps but it hits the spot. it takes a while to make (approx 20min after they put the order in) so you know it's fresh. a whole (as opposed to half) duck order suffices for 2 people. read more

The staff is cold and unfriendly seeming to only pay attention to certain customers. I've never been greeted with a warm out invited hello and often I feel like a bother to be there. Our favorite Chinese Restaurant had closed down and I've been looking for a new place. This is definitely the place! Fried rice with shrimp was particularly good as was the Lo Mein with chicken. We did the takeout from this place because we were in the area and needed to pick up some dinner. I was a little skeptical because the place looked super empty when we walked in but the food we got was delicious. There used to be another Chinese place in Playa Del Rey we used to love but they closed during pandemic, well Canton Low just topped that one. Kung Pao is really missing the PAO, I'm not sure if this is authentic Chinese. I tried the Kung Pao and honestly, it has 0 spice It is more like orange chicken because it was so sweet. I see the chillisi in there but not even a kick of spice. The fried rice had good flavor, but the chicken and the beef were missing many flavors. I think I'll stick to Panda for my Kung Pao chicken around this area. read more

Thanks to NextDoor posts, we finally find really good old fashion Cantonese food near MdR. We had their home made roast duck, their Macau pork belly, their blistered string beans and beef chow fun. Three of these dishes can be tests of their kitchen skills. They are not cheating on the "wok hey", i.e. fiery wok power, when they cook. For the string beans, they beat out Henry's, which the Times rates in their 101 Best. And to go to the trouble of "house roast" duck means they care. They are rightly a local institution and I'm glad their community has taken them past Covid. The name "Canton Low" screams of the 1950's. Besides tastiness and authenticity, their portion sizes are still up to old standards, sizeable, and their prices, still moderate. Cooking these dishes in our downsized condo sets off multiple safety alarms, so we'll be glad to be able to zip down Pershing to get here. We hope the family can find staff and chef to endure another 48 years! read more
