Stopped in on a chilly Saturday afternoon for a coffee. It was very busy, bright, loud but incredibly fast service and we managed to find seats. Tons of yummy choices! Pistachio Latte for me and Chicken Sandwich for the kiddo. Yum.

If you are looking for amazing pastries, croissants, unique desserts and great coffee, look no further. A small cafe and bakery with inside seating and (outside in the summer) downtown Ann Arbor. The biggest challenge you will have as you look over their artful display of goods, is deciding what to order. On this visit my wife ordered the Egg and Cheese Croissant. I had the Bacon, Egg and Cheese Croissant. Their Croissants are very nice size, flaky, buttery with so much flavor, they are the perfect compliment to the fluffy eggs and cheese. I also added one of their Ribbon Cinnamon Pastries. The Cinnamon was textural and unlike any cinnamon pastry we have ever had before. Definitely is now one of our favorites. Great coffee too. You order at the counter when you go in, and their staff brings your order to you at your table. Servers are friendly and available if you need anything additional. Absolutely recommend checking them out. We have also been in their Detroit location on Grand River. So happy they chose Ann Arbor!

How have I never known this place existed?! We stopped in for a breakfast sandwich before seeing a movie. I wanted to order 1 of each croissant! It was busy so I didn't have time to view them all but will definitely return soon for an almond croissant! It's a small place with seating available up front for more of a coffee shop setting and then in the back is more table seating which is where we sat. The bacon, egg, cheese sandwich was amazing! I ordered mine without lettuce and tomato. The egg is super fluffy and bacon was crispy which is the way I like it. It was delicious and whatever the MT sauce was, it just elevated it to a gourmet sandwich for me. I ordered hot tea with cream and I love that they froth it for me and serve it in a teapot. The restrooms are gender neutral and very clean and spacious. Service was friendly and prompt and they bring your order to the table. We can't wait to return on our next trip to Ann Arbor!

One of my favorite cafes to go to downtown! All of the pastries are so tasty and classy. There is plenty of seating, and I always feel like I can focus better with the French jazz music in the background. There are more seats in the back and also outside.

Those big bubbles represent a steaming wand that got the better of a barista, and produce a drink that is far less enjoyable to sip.

There is a lot to love about Cannelle, but there are a few things that just do not quite measure up to their obviously high standards of quality. It's clear that a lot of thought, care, love, and passion has gone into this shop. The ambiance is elegant without being stuffy. And who would not love a beautiful place to sit, enjoy a gorgeous pastry, and just take a moment or twelve for a bit of much needed self care? The layout of the place is a bit tricky, because if you walk in the door and approach the counter to place an order, you will have missed out on peeping the glorious pastry case around the right side of the counter. Pro tip: Check out the pastries first. Take your time. Eat with your eyes. Not everything is quite as amazing as it looks, but trust your gut and your keen sense of observation. For me, the one consistent disappointment in the pastry department has been their macaron. Your milage my vary. I am quite particular when it comes to these delicate treats. I'm also rather particular about my cappuccino. While Canelle has the tools in place to make a good one, the one I was served was tragic. If I were feeling snarky, I might say something like, "The 80s called and wanted their cappuccino back." Those big fat bubbles on the textured milk that crowned the cup I was served harkened back to an earlier era when these coffee drinks were still new and novel. I should have known something was up when I ordered a small cappuccino and was told it would be twelve ounces. Mon dieu! It was tragic. Or, as Alanis Morissette once said, it was "like a black fly in your chardonnay." Reading through other reviews, it seems like the tea service might be the winning option. I'll give it a try the next time I'm in. Although hopefully someone might pick up the slack and get the coffee program in line with the otherwise delightfully high standards of this downtown gem. By the way, the staff are great. There was a much more serious mistake with something else that was ordered at my table, and the offending dish was quickly whisked away and replaced quickly and with a smile. Bravo!

The shop had a lovely and wide selection of pastries, including tarts, cakes, and savory bread. Of course I had to try almost everything and had thoughts! The tart with pistachio cream and raspberry was by far my favorite. It was recommended by the worker who was packaging the pastries and I'm so glad I tried it. If you like pistachio flavor, this smooth and sweet cream is a dreamy one. The addition of raspberries gave it a slight tartness and the crust was slightly crumbly. The mixed fruit tart was also very refreshing after a heavy meal! I liked how it included fruits you don't normally find on tarts such as dragonfruit, mango, and grapes. It gave it a tropical feel and was not overly sweet! My next favorite was the chocolate croquant. It looks like a layered chocolate cake but it has a crunchy layer to it that was so unexpected and wonderful! Highly recommend for the chocolate lovers out there. The raspberry tart and other pasties were good but not anything unexpected. Overall, I don't think you could go wrong with any of these freshly baked treats! There's plenty of seating indoors and very cute tables outdoors as well. Would be a great place to stop by while exploring East Washington Street!

Over the last 2+ years, I've ordered several large sheet cakes from Cannelle for events. This review is about these experiences, which have been very positive. I recommend Cannelle for special event cake orders in Ann Arbor. The ordering and pick-up processes has always always gone seamlessly, and the staff has always been very helpful. I've always ordered over the phone, and they only require a few days' advance notice. Although the cakes are pricey (as of my most recent order, a full sheet cake was $213.20), they're actually cheaper than Zingerman's Bakehouse---I found this surprising. The cakes are always beautifully decorated. Some of the cake flavors I recommend are (in descending order): -Fraisier - vanilla cake, strawberries, and cream. -Chocolate Raspberry - chocolate mousse, raspberry cream, raspberry coulis, and chocolate cake. -Chocolate Croquant - it's very rich and dense, like a Ferrero Rocher. It has both chocolate mousse and a crunchy chocolate nut layer. -Raspberry Pistachio Macaron - two layers of macaron shell, with pistachio cream mousseline and raspberries in the middle. -Seasonal tarts - the flavors rotate and are always fun to try. I think the chef changes the cake recipes periodically. E.g., a few months ago the chocolate raspberry was very sweet, but in my most recent order it was more balanced; a previous version of the tiramisu was less chocolatey than the current version. Other cakes I've tried are the Chocolate Strawberry Cake (the chocolate raspberry is better), Mille-Feuille (mostly custard with 2 layers of puff pastry), Lemon Raspberry Cake (texture wasn't my favorite), and Tiramisu (very rich, very heavy on the cocoa and chocolate). The cakes are definitely on the richer and sweeter side; for lighter cake options, I would recommend Yoon's Bakery instead. I don't recommend their viennoiseries; I would stick to the cakes instead. I haven't tried many of their individual pastries, but these come in a wider selection and many of them appear to rotate seasonally. Although the quality doesn't compare to that of bakeries in larger cities, they're a good option for Ann Arbor.

After my initial review about this place I got a "compliment" from a yelper with a note that EDUCATED me on what Latte is Thanks so much BUT Wikipedia says [Latte[a] (/lte, læte/)[1][2] or caffè latte (Italian: [kaff llatte]),[3][4] also known as caffè e latte, caffellatte, or caffelatte, is a coffee drink of Italian origin made with espresso and steamed milk, traditionally served in a glass. In America I have never walked into a cafe expecting a menu that says "Latte" and they only expect them to give you MILK. It's not Italy nor italian cafe. It's French btw. ALSO lets say if pistachio syrup + Milk is Latte. Those two ingredients for $7+ i don't know if that's okay too? Anyways THIS is my review so stop sending me passive aggressive messages trying to educate me in italian :) I love Cannelle but i stand by my review for this location, two stars for what i enjoyed, and lost three stars on customer service price and taste of their coffee in THIS particular location. My initial encounter with their good espresso was in a different location in Detroit.

the pastries were soft, fresh, soooo delightful. the staff was friendly and the ambiance.....! such a cozy spot to grab a treat and relax with good company. highly recommend. best pastries i've had in ann arbor so far.

Excellent pastries! They have so many different types of sweet and savory croissants, as well as a whole variety of sweet cakes and treats. My favorites are their chocolate pistachio croissant and their ham and cheese croissant. This location also has really good (and big) looking breakfast and lunch sandwiches. Fun coffee options and flavored coffee drinks, but I mostly prefer to get tea when I'm here to pair with and cut down the sweetness of the pastries. Different kinds of seating options inside, for different vibes. Tables, booths, and more loungey chairs. Friendly service! Drinks and food are served to your table after you order at the counter.

If you read nothing else, I would say go here. It's worth popping into at least, because it has some gorgeous pastries. I only tried a few, but everything was good enough to get again for me. I love the unique combinations and offerings, I was so excited to try this place and it did not disappoint! The ambiance is pretty cute, you can go and sit down if there's seating, though it was quite busy. They went out of their way to make sure we found a place to sit which was nice! Food was delivered to the table and we got recommendations from the lady we checked out with, so it was a great experience overall. Check it out!

Stunning patisserie which is crowded, and rightly so! The creations are beautiful and equally delicious. I got 2croissants: pistachio and za'atar. They were perfect. I will definitely return to try such intriguing delights as the pacman.

One of the best coffee shops in Ann Arbor (and there are plenty). I have been many times and it has never disappointed. The seating is a bit tight and disjointed in the back, but if you're able to snag a seat, this place is great. The pastries are fresh and delicious and they also offered more prepared foods like breakfast sandwiches and avocado toast. All amazing. It's usually crowded so be prepared to wait if it's the weekend. Worth it though! read more

So happy that Canelle came to Ann Arbor!! The original in Detroit is a must visit. The AA location is in the Great Commoner coffee shop. Love their breakfast menus, pastries, lattes/coffee and then when you walk around the glass display, a vast amount of colorful and delicious desserts! We got a passion fruit tart and a chocolate hazelnut dessert that one of the employees behind the counter likened to a "Ferraro Rocher" candy. Wow that one was my favorite! Anyway, it is such a treat and if you ever want to take anyone out of town or bring an impressive dessert to a dinner party, this is the place to go! read more

Hands down -- one of the best coffee & pastry shops in Ann Arbor. I love coming here in the morning, spending WAY too much time picking out which type of buttery, flaky croissant I want, and admiring the incredible selection of desserts. Coffee is excellent (I love their seasonal syrups) and the breakfast sandwiches (on a croissant especially) are to die for. I can't wait to stop in again soon when I'm downtown because I'm drooling writing this review! read more

This bakery is an absolute gem. The food is beautiful and well-executed. I got the pistachio raspberry tart. The crust was amazing-- not soggy at all. And the flavors were great. Service was prompt. Delicious French pastries! The macarons and macaron-centric pastries are exceptional. I don't go here frequently, but everything I've tried has been high quality and worth the money. I also love how they have some seasonal pastries (e.g., pistachio macaron Christmas tree) alongside their permanent offerings. Finally got to try the spot in Ann Arbor! I love that there's now a proper pastry shop here. I've been to the location in Detroit a few times and this one is similar. The space is a lot more spacious and the same great croissants and daily breakfast specials are available. There are a few tables outside for outdoor seating. I imagine this place will get hella busy in a week even college football starts! Parking is convenient either on the street at the meters or in the Washington garage across the street! read more

Loved my experience today at Cannelle Ann Arbor! Fancy but chill vibes inside. Not very busy. One other person studying while my kids and I occupied the corner circle table. Were served by two very friendly staff members, Claire and Asha. Had the bacon egg and cheese deluxe - croissant is stiff and holds up well even with soft egg and cheese and sauce inside! Def fork and knife ordeal. Iced Cafe Conmiel was refreshing and perfect for the warm summer day per Claire's suggestion!Will definitely be back. Where to begin...First things, first: the design layout is just totally wrong. All the beautiful pastries are in the case around the TIGHT corner showing off for the paneled wood wall 2 ft in front of the case. (No, you can't window shop and decide what you want before going in-which would have been REALLY SMART.) You can't possibly get in line to order unless you squeeze around the corner to check out the offerings. Then you squeeze back around the corner to get in line behind other folks that got there after you, but they might have been there before and smartly decided to get in line first and THEN make a choice ...Welp, you live, you learn. But, I digress... Everything delish and beautiful... however... The canelé... the most bizarre thing I have ever put in my mouth. I'll explain. It tasted lovely, nice custardy, bread puddingish texture. This was the last item we all tasted. I am just so glad that we took all the pastries to go so that I had easy access to my toothbrush when I was finished. It left a very unpleasant mouthfeel. We all looked at each other as we tried to scrape the "waxy" substance from the roofs of our mouths. It was by far the most bizarre experience. So, this may sound strange, but, I took a butter knife and scraped the roof of my mouth to see if anything came out. Yes, yes, yes. A waxy substance. So strange. First we tried to get rid of it by wiping out our mouths with our napkins, modestly as we tried. That just wouldn't get rid of it. We all went and brushed our teeth. So, this is my first Yelp review. We stopped in here on our way to Detroit metro. We got five items (four pastries and one pistachio chocolate croissant) and the bill was close to $50. We got back to the car and checked the receipt and they had charged an automatic 25% tip on the transaction. There was no option to choose a specific tip at checkout. Maybe you should let customers decide what tip they would like to give based on their experience. We ate the pistachio chocolate croissant immediately only to find it was raw on the inside, completely soggy. Pretty sure it made my partner sick later. All the cream on the pastries was solid as if too much gelatin had been used. The "Black Forest" like pastry has absolutely no cherry flavor. The only item that tasted good was the large pistachio macaron. All in all not a great experience and not worth the drive from across the state. read more

Pricy? Yes. Delicious? YAS! I think it's worth the price if you go on special occasions. The tastes are subtly sweet (not overpowering). I definitely taste the European influence. Ranking the desserts I tried, I'd say my favorite was the chocolate ganache (so rich in chocolate!), then the chocolate cannoli (can you tell I like chocolate?), then the pac-man (love the ganache, too much bread tho), then the strawberry tart (so yum but strawberries were sour). Overall, I recommend to try this café at least once! read more

I first heard of this place from a friend of mine. For years, I wanted to find a good bakery in Ann Arbor. And Cannelle seems to be the answer to my quest. I have previously ordered chocolate eclair, millefeuille, chocolate concha and buche de noel from this place. The pastries as well as the cake was so good, that I have ordered my anniversary cake from Cannelle. The pastries or the cake is a bit expensive, but for me it is worth the money. I like my pastries and cake not too sweet or heavy on cream. And I feel Cannelle gets it right on both the account. For me both the millefeuille and the buche de noel had a sense of familiarity. Millefeuille reminded me of the vanilla pudding that my grandma used to make, while buche de noel smelled of Christmas cakes back home. I don't know how to put it, it was familiar as well as unfamiliar at the same time. Maybe because it reminded me of flavours back home, that's why I like it. Not only that, even though the pastries are a bit expensive, they are quite big and can be shared by two adults. So I would say it is worth the money. read more

Lovely food and service. Calm atmosphere, you can sit down for a date here. I got their sandwiches and coffee, however you can also get pastries or a cake to carry out. They have free water also. They toast the sandwich or croissant if you dine in. read more

Everything was mediocre except for the croissants which were excellent and the raspberry pistachio macaron which was delectable. The problem is that those items were offset by an $8 tiny tiramisu that was a "tear"-a-"miss". The other items were ok. Nothing to write home about. read more

Cannelle was previously my favorite bakery in Ann Arbor. The bread and croissants are definitely the best products, Their cakes, especially the chocolate mousse based ones, are excellent. I found their macarons hard and dry, although perhaps they had gone stale the day I bought them. I have also tried other pastries that were overly sweet or too dry, so I stuck to only purchasing mousse cakes and croissants. The reason for my one star review is the damning piece from the Michigan Daily that details intense surveillance of employees, poor management practices, unethical firing of employees, and food waste. I would recommend people read this article (Lehrbaum and Lusk, 2023) for themselves and make a personal choice on whether to support this business. I will not be returning to Cannelle for these reasons. read more

So many amazing pastries to chose from! My husband and I settled on the pistachio chocolate and the almond croissant. Both were delicious, buttery and flaky. The lattes were smooth and creamy. We will definitely be back! read more

First off, food is 5 stars, that's not a problem, hands down some of the best pastries in southern Michigan. The issue is how they treat their employees, and handle the business as a whole. For anyone who hasn't seen it, The Michigan Daily has a very eye opening article with in depth information from former employees. one major violation is Canelle's use of illegal audio recording. They do not warn employees or patrons that they may be listened to but routinely do so. While I was at Canelle on July 10th, a similar discussion to the above arose with a friend. Mere seconds after quietly mentioning the camera, then glancing and gesturing at it, the music was cut. this occurred three times while I was visiting over the course of an hour. Upper management cares about nothing but cutting costs and their own personal image. Please stop frequenting this establishment until retributions are met. read more

Went here twice. Thought the first experience was just a one-off thing but it is not. Sure the whole experience was Instagram worthy but the food was bad both times. Odd that a place for pastry has low quality food. read more

I absolutely love the pastry and sandwiches from Cannelle...but I find their layout and seating volume absolutely awkward. Not clear where to stand in line, a tight corner to see their macarons, undergrads making base camp as if they are in the library...all of which diverts foot traffic, which I observed today while enjoying my lunch at a table that I had to hunt down. I love this place and I don't want it to go away, so I hope they are able to adjust their flow and maybe instate a no-laptop policy during peak hours! read more

This is the grosses place ive ever been to. I saw a employee break down in the back when someone comes up to take my order they also looked like they were sobbing. The main thing Drip House has going for it is that it is effectively the only coffee spot to sit and study or meet someone right by the stadium (where a bunch of us live and/or work). The service has always been just fine and it's a pretty cute spot (not to sound ridiculously nit-picky but while we're here--someone might wanna sheer some of the many dead leaves off the beautiful plant inside though). Also, the banana oat latte they had as a special a couple months ago was delicious. So yummy. Some things I don't love about Drip House: the blue chairs. So uncomfortable. It is expensive and, dare I say, overpriced. The first time I got my $14 piece of ricotta toast, it was delicious. And I figured, fine. It's $14 for a piece of bread with a little cheese and jam but it's so yummy, I'll splurge every once in a while and go with it. Plus, I can't eat tree nuts, so it is one of the few options for me. However, the second time I got it, it was most definitely not worth it. The "whipped" ricotta was just a sad, thin wet layer and there was practically no jam. I get it. It's expensive out here. We're living in the shadows of the avocado toast economy where espresso drinks cost minimum $7 and you effectively can't buy anything for less than $4. But just because you feel like you *can* doesn't mean you *should.* Paying $14 for a piece of bread.... Come on. It's insulting. It feels exploitative. Will i be going back? Yes, because of the proximity and sometimes a girl needs to go for a cute little walk to get a coffee--just to feel something. Would I if there was a competing coffee shop nearby? That remains to be seen. Also the size of the "large" iced drink. Come on guys.
