Great neighborhood restaurant that's been around for a long time. In all the years I've lived on Staten Island, I had yet to try it until today. They have great lunch specials, and dinner specials and when we walked in, we were greeted very warmly. The place is cozy with a lot of seating. They make an excellent clam pie. We have eaten here many many times and it's time I start reviewing them ! I can remember the first time I ate here I was kicking myself for not trying it sooner ! There is an expansive menu ranging from pizza to sandwiches to seafood and pasta ect.... I have tried a lot of the menu and am always happy. I almost always get the seafood sampler. Spicy shrimp , fried calamari and baked clams ! The French onion soup is another one of my favorites. My wife likes the raviolis. She likes The chicken franchese and the filet of sole too. read more

This is a 40 year old restaurant that is fantastic. From the moment you walk in you feel at home. We had appetizers at the bar. The baked clams and perogies were delicious. For dinner a wonderful waitress recommended beef Wellington. I had that and it was cooked to perfection. The ambiance is classic American and very clean. read more

I ate there on Saint Patrick's day. There was a limited set menu. You didn't have a choice of salad dressing. You couldn't get pastrami because it wasn't on the set menu. The food wasn't good. I had roast beef, not good. The mashed potatoes had a funny taste too.The soda bread was stale the worst I ever had. I have been there 3 times now and haven't had a good meal yet. I finally had a chance to try this place after hearing about it for years. It did not disappoint! The place, upon walking in, was welcoming & friendly. It's a quaint, casual place, immaculately clean & inviting. The service was on point & the food was excellent! I tried the French dip sandwich & my husband tried the beef Wellington. Both were delicious, and the portions were generous. I ended up taking half of mine home, and our server, before I even had a chance to ask, provided me with a to-go container of the fabulous dipping sauce. ROAST BEAST!!! The roast beef was obviously a 10 out of 10. Really tasty smothered in delicious thick brown gravy stuffed with some minced mushrooms. And their mashed potatoes are creamy and buttery straight up delicious. My wife had a salad with grilled shrimp and salmon on it, really good as well. For starters we ordered spicy shrimp which was outrageous and pierogis which were the best I've ever had (potato stuffed ) smothered in fried onions . For all the trolls that diddnt like this place maybe you went on an off night, I've been there 3 times and all delicious I will say I am not a fan of their Italian food. The sauce left a lot to be desired and their pizza was ok Other than that the service was good, place was clean and to whomever said it was a dungeon hasn't been there in 10 years . An excellent local Staten Island neighborhood bar/restaurant with some of the best penne a la vodka in NYC. I've been here 3 times, each visit with a large group between 10-25 people and food always arrives around and hot. Service is superb with a friendly wait staff. It has a very nice mix of American, Italian, and Irish classics. Try the pot roast with potato pancakes and red cabbage. Chef is also a Food Network Chopped Champion so it's definitely work a trip if you're in the area. read more

My husband ordered from here for Mother's Day dinner at home. He had a great experience and everything was delicious. The seafood wellington and the veal were perfection. It became obvious quite quickly that they are not as clean as one would prefer. The menus were sticky and the cutlery was smudged. The bread on the table was as hard as bricks and there was no difference between the "fresh bread" and breadsticks. Two of my friends got food poisoning after eating their Penne a la Vodka with chicken. I have a shellfish allergy and ordered a simple baked potato. I reacted to it anyway which only shows that they are not as clean or careful as one would prefer. The food was just okay and for two people to get so sick almost immediately, it was a sign for us to leave so we did. We are definitely never going back. read more

Terrible customer service and relations. I placed an order for pickup and when I got home items were missing. I called and was told I could come back to pick them up. I said it was their error and asked them to deliver it. I was told they were too busy. In a time when businesses are closing I would think customer satisfaction would be important. This is the WORST experience I've had and I've been to several restaurants throughout my life. The food is awful and not as stated on the menu. I ordered a glass of wine and it WAS NOT WINE. My boyfriend ordered Veal Marsala and they brought out Chicken Marsala. We had to wait 10 minutes for a server to attend to us so we can inform the mistake; 3 times to tell the chef and THE CHEF SAID IT WAS VEAL MARSALA because HE MADE IT HIMSELF. IT WAS CHICKEN!!!!! Was there the other night for an affair, let me start by saying I heard alot of good things about the food being very good. So needless to say I was very disappointed when the appetizers arrived, the baked clams smelled very fishy so I passed on them, the wings were overcooked, the amount of food for a table full of people was shameful. The salad was a joke 3 bites and it was gone. My entree left alot to be desired, two members of our group were up all night with stomach aches. And today my stomach is upset. What they charged per person was a disgrace considering the amount of food they served and the drinks were awful. Was there for a special birthday. Had a really wonderful time. However, the food wasn't good at all. It was buffet service and they served you. The servers gave you such tiny amounts of food. When one girl gave me vegetables, she put a few pieces of shredded carrots on my plate and I had to ask her for more vegetables. Everything was greasy and no taste. Couldn't even eat the salad. The drinks were also watered down. The servers were very nice. They were very attentive. But, I'd never go back there. read more

Living on a dream that has long passed by. The place is dank and dark and for a reason, it's in dire need of a makeover and more importantly, a clean down from top to bottom menus caked with food, silverware smudged, knife had dried food on it. Underneath table disgusting, food, dirt, unacceptable. The food - fish and chips. It was inedible, fish was cold and mushy in the middle. Chips looked like they had fried and reheated several times. The bread was as hard as Sheetrock, the salad (if you could call it that) had some lettuce and a tomato. How any diner could give this dump more than 2 stars is beyond me. It's a joke. read more

Ok I never post here but need to do so 1. I booked a private room in September with my husband as we go to Canlon's for our anniversary dinner. I was toured the private work as well as my son ( the one receiving communion as well as my mother and husband on separate occasions in the fall winter and spring.) 2. I spoke with a girl who's name I will not mention but was ask for the menu choices the Thursday before my so's communion. I made choices and the cake choice ( whip cream topping, vanilla cake with vanilla and chocolate filling). I asked if I can have music and was told not an issue the room has speakers and flat screen TVs. I also explained I have special needs children and disabled adults attending and children with allergies attending . Again was told not an issue. 3. Walk into the restaurant and was told because my party is smaller ) only by 6 people) I was moved to the restaurant itself! Umm WTF . Now I have children with bees and adults with disabilities having to go up and down stairs to go into the place and to use the restroom! 4. I was first told we will give you free tap beer and red and white wine and lower the bill (7 dollars off per person) the i was told pops I'm sorry I can't do that we can give you one round of drinks and that's it. 5. I try to make the best of all of this bullshit and now the cake comes Out, it's buttercream with custard filling ( many people can't eat this and I definitely cannot, I ordered Thursday and confirmed it Friday! ) . 6. I ask for owner or manager , no he is around but the wife come ( after I have to wait for he for 30 minutes!) and gives me stories about her life. I'm like this doesn't even compare to what we just went through! Kids running everywhere in restaurant since it's not a private room, the dirty patrons stares we got because we played baby shark for our twin girls , the food wasn't amazing , the cake was wrong! So she tells me we can bargain. What would make me happy? How about getting into a Delorian and going back in time and fixing this whole fucking fiscaco?! Oh no she can't do that for me! So I drop price, but she forgets I gave a friggin deposit on the PRIVATE ROOM! 6. I leave crying out of not sadness but absolute anger this has occurred! I am beside myself, and I love that restaurant but now they have screwed me over royally. We will NEVER go back there and will tell all to avoid it like the plague! My advise NEVER go to CANLONS! First time at canlon's...we went there with a group of 5 girls for a friends Birthday after hearing good things about this place and also reading the great reviews. We got there pretty early in the evening, 4PM. Nobody was in there other than us 5 girls. As soon as we walked in, it was ABSOLUTLEY freezing in there. I'm not one to be cold. I'm one of those people that is always hot, as a matter of fact. We had to ask them to turn the heat up numerous times, which they did..but it didn't do much. it was like sitting in a freezer. I had suede boots on lined with fur and my toes were completely frozen. no exaggeration. We decided not to order any apps because dinner came with a soup or salad and potato and veggie. So the server took our orders and she asked us how we like our food (meat) cooked, what kind of potato we would lke,,,etc etc. I then asked her what the veggie was since the menu said it came with a veggie. She said.. it's squash and it comes out for the whole table...(I only asked her this because I realized she didn't ask me about the veggie or even mention it). OK....So, 3 of us decided we would order soup as our apps and pay for them and then have the salad with dinner because we were freezing in there. I had the crab Bisque..eh...it was OK. not too flavorful and pretty bland. Another friend ordered it as well and actually wasn't crazy about it because she thought it was too fishy and sent it back. Foe the main dishes, I ordered the Beef Wellington, the birthday girl ordered NY strip I believe, another friend had the Lamb, our other friend ordered pork chops and 1 friend ordered stuffed shells which came with 2 meatballs and sausage on the side. Our food came out...My beef wellington was really delicious. So good that I kept telling everyone to taste it and everyone agreed. However, it was DROWNING in some kind of sauce which filled the entire plate. The sauce was actually good but there was a ton of it. It almost looked like it was sitting in the middle of a bowl of soup. I wasn't necessary because the welington was tasty enough. There was also a little garnish of a sliced up strawberry on the edge of the plate, which I thought was strange because strawberry does not go with beef.. but not a big deal. My friend said her NY Strip was really good as were the lamb and the pork chops. The baked potatoes were TINY and overcooked. However, our friend that ordered the stuffed shells was not happy. I could see her face at the first bite that she was not liking the flavor. I asked her what was wrong because of her facial expressions and she said the sauce tasted like tin and she was trying to eat through it. I told her not to do that, to send it ack. She was paying, why should she have to eat through it if it wasn't good? So of course, we all started tasting it and ..she was right, it was not good. it tasted like canned sauce and did not taste like it was made that day. There was also a TON of garlic in it but it seemed like it was the chopped garlic from a jar, not fresh garlic. She actually wound up sending it back. The server came over and she told her she wasn't happy with it and she took it back and gave her a menu to order something else. When the server came back to take her order for a different dish, she decided not to get anything else after all. I felt bad because now my friend didn't have anything for dinner. I then proceeded to ask the server for the veggie.."for the whole table" - she put this little tiny bowl on the table next to me and it was a portion for one so I assumed it was for me. It was the same bowl they serve the Cup of soup in. She said "that's the vegetable for the whole table" - I said WHAT?? that little thing is supposed to be for 5 of us?? We all started laughing in disbelief. I thought this was a joke. Then she told us"Ok I will bring out another one" - umm ok.. I said, maybe you can bring out 2 or 3 more?? Thanks? Is this for real? My dish was $28 and I cant even have my own side of veggies...seriously? it wound up being the joke of the night all night as we went out afterwards. So, the final is, some of the food was really yummy (the steaks) service was OK, food came out in a timely manner...but we most likely wont be back because of how cold it was in there, the stuffed shell incident and the veggies for the table portion. We have had better overall but, we have also had worse. If I return, I will stick to the Beef Wellington since it was so good. I think I actually had the best dish on the entire table. read more

Stay far away from this place. Called in January to book for my daughter's shower in June, was told to come in and speak to the manager, when I get there the only person helping me is a 16 year old waitress. She told me I could leave a deposit and she'll write it in the book, and hands me 2 luncheon menus and told me that was the price. I felt uneasy so I did not book right away. I went back three other times because I liked the room but never got anyone but the waitresses to book the room and no contract. They told me that I could choose from one of the luncheon packages, even bereavement because it was a Saturday afternoon party. I gave a check, they wrote it in the book and I sent out my invites. I recommended this place to my sister that was having a party because the price was reasonable, when she called she was quoted a price $20 more per person than what I thought I was getting. I called the restaurant and again got a young person to speak to, I told them I was told that I was getting the price that was listed on the menus given to me, and they said no we can't do that. I then asked to speak to someone in charge, they put the owner on. The owner immediately had a hostile attitude and told me he would absolutely not do the price that I was quoted and no cake included either, I said I've been there 4 times and told the same thing every time I went there, he said who doesn't get a contract when their having a party? And I said I tried but you have children taking care of your party bookings. He then said to me, what do you want me to do about it? Very arrogantly like he could care less, I told him that I was not happy about this and he said then come in and get your money back, I told him I already sent out my invites and he said and I quote, "then you better zip your mouth or I won't help you" I was absolutely furious!!!!! I said how dare you speak to me that way, and he said and I quote, "I've been in business for 30 years, I don't need you". He then hung up on me. Being a mom and putting my daughter first I called back because I didn't want to ruin my daughter's shower, I was then given a price that he would agree to and I said I need that in writing and emailed to me, he said no. He then said and I quote "I'm a dinosaur and I don't do email, if you want a contract you will have to call and make an appointment with me and come down and get it." This is the same man that comes by and greets everyone with a smile and shakes everyone's hand when you go there. Don't be fooled by this arrogant jerk. Do not book any parties with this place, they are unreputable and insulting!!!!!!! I hope everyone that reads this beware!!!!!!!! read more

This review is for the catering aspect of the restaurant, not the dine in experience itself. Sadly, we had Canlon's catered food as a repose meal following a funeral. I had never heard of this place and we were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. The eggplant and chicken part was good. The potatoes and salad were my favorites. I think the people serving the food were Canlon's employees. They were very polite and gracious. The "Irish lasagne" was nothing I would like - layers of corn beef, cabbage and potatoes, but everyone was going crazy for it! I would consider eating here or catering from here if I was in the area. read more
