Came here after dinner and was parked right in front. It was shortly before Christmas so there was a line of people buying tubs of whatever. I got chocolate fudge. I haven't had any in ages and I kept it all for myself. All heart aren't I? I love the mini licorice pieces. Next favorite, the popcorn. They offer it with butter, doesn't need it. I picked up a few chocolate pieces.Great and patient counter servers. Get the frequent customer card. Downside, not sure about the daytime, but you can't go at night without being accosted out front. Finally stopped in here and I'm so glad that I did! This place has all sorts of old fashioned candies, popcorns, and taffy. Stepping in here is like stepping back in time. I picked up some assorted licorice mix, large melty mints, and dark chocolate covered almonds. Definitely not the type of candy you see in the grocery store, this reminds me of the candy my dad used to bring home when I was a kid! Very friendly and helpful staff as well. The smell of sugar makes me feel and think all sorts of crazy, and I'm sure other reasonable and candy-loving adults would agree. Today, after I inhaled Candyland's sweet smell, a by-product of their daily made confections, my mouth started to uncontrollably salivate like a rabid mastiff. My eyes bulged out of my face, paralleling a post-expresso chug before stepping into a meeting. My brain forgot the amount of time remaining on my parking meter, or where it's even parked. Or, that I had a car. Seriously, who cares?! Adult life is not as cool. Two minutes in line, I began to justify responses to imaginary scenarios where I pushed children down on their butts, because they tried to budge in front of me in line. I also estimated how far I could run after stealing a candy cane before being tackled by one of their friendly staff members. I'm drunk... on these sweets. ***** I love Candyland, and I would be perfectly content with eating a half pound bag of vanilla covered pretzels by myself on my couch. In the dark. On a Friday Night. While watching Netflix. What do dem kids call that today? YOLO? I hate that word. But yeah, that's how I feel. My heart even forgives the fact that Candyland, residing in the heart of Saint Paul, carries Green Bay Packer themed popcorn bins. To me, that's a sin. But, that's the power of Candyland. Seriously, what can I say that's not been said about this place? Great selection of candy, all the old-time favorites are here. Like, OLD TIME, not 60s+ nostalgia candy that seems to make up most of the selection at the candy stores at MOA. Lots of handmade goodies. The chocolate covered potato chips are amazing. The chocolate covered handmade caramel with sea-salt is my current love. I sneak in whenever I can for 4 of those perfect little squares. Heaven! (Shh, don't tell The Man he could be replaced by chocolate caramels.) Their fresh made popcorn is the number one reason to come here. They have regular, cheese, and caramel, but save yourself the trouble of deciding and go straight to the Chicago Mix- all 3 in one! Sweet, salty, savory, orange fingers, kernels in your teeth, belly aching after half a bag... but so delicious and worth it! Only complaint- and it's not Candyland's fault... the SPPD know the magic that Candyland holds, and if you just quick park on the street right outside thinking "I'll be gone for 3 minutes, tops, I just need some popcorn" you WILL get a ticket. Okay, this is my favorite candy shop! I've been going to this little shop in St. Paul since I was alittle girl and it hasn't changed. The smells when you walk in will make your mouth water on impact. If you love popcorn, you must try the Chicago mix. This deliciously sweet and salty mix combines butter, caramel, and cheesy popcorn into one spiritual experience. I also love their turtles, sponge candy (seasonal), and smores. They also have a wide selection of jelly candies, salted nuts, and other chocolate delites. Literally, I've made meals nothing but a bag of candy from here. With that out of the way, it can be a bit chaotic when you enter and there is no real line or rhyme or flow. You kind of feel like a lost goat for a bit until you get a "can I help you" sent your way. Then it's like the light of god hitting you right in the face! Chocolate covered graham crackers? Uh, yeah. Chicago Mix popcorn? Better fucking believe it. And my all time favorite, which has ruined more meals than I can count at this point, gummy cubs. No, not mini gummy bears. They're the bastard offspring of gummy bears and the delicious fairy. A totally different flavor that'll make you smack small children out of the way in order to get your hands on them. read more

Treat yo'self 2012. Upon entering this shop, my inner child re-emerged and the most important component to a sustained life become getting a fix of sugar. I can confidently explain that this is one of the best candy shops I have been to in my life. Vintage charm. I found candy here that I haven't seen since '96. That's what makes me happy with a candy store--reminiscing. Candyland is equipped with all of the sugary treats that made me happy as a tike and then some! First of all, popcorn. Your senses are filled with delicious, sweet and salty all at once as soon as you see the freshly popped goodness being attended to by a worker, who is carefully seasoning, coating, and keeping fresh the bulk, delicious corn. I got 3oz (they sell by 3, 9, 12oz, etc) of white cheddar popcorn. It literally melted in my mouth, I have never tasted anything as genuinely cheesy as that bag. They also have a selection of tins if you're looking to buy larger quantities, which I will take them up on next time because it's necessary for my wellbeing. A huge selection of chocolate including fudge, bark, malted balls, chunks, and then of course gummies, lollipops, various hard and soft candies all for a steep price but entirely worth it. This store suits adults and children alike, but I appreciate it much more as a grown up. read more

I havent been refused service since I was a 10 year old shopping in a corner store in the South, but it happened to me today. I was literally IGNORED by all the staff although I continued to step forward as the next customer. One by one three different staff members looked me in the eye and moved to opposite end of the counter to help other customers first (even those who arrived after me!) Now I have been to this store many times so I know how things work. It can be chaotic when its busy...which is all the time. But I have never made eye contact and flagged myself with a hand wave as the next customer and been blatantly ignored. When I asked the Manager for a moment of her time, she left the floor, went to the back room and made me wait a full 5 minutes before coming out. I calmly explained the situation and she listened with a smirk on her face the entire time. I explained that I would not be returning and she expressed no remorse. I left in tears. I started going to Candyland way back in 1961, and I have to tell you that everything is just as good today as it was back then, when going downtown to a movie meant loading up on Candyland popcorn and treats to smuggle into the theater. Still the best cheese popcorn and carmel corn in town. Get the "flavo-crunch" for a buttery flavored carmel corn with cashews and pecans. The caramel bars and toffee are also personal favorites. Candyland deserves many stars for the quality, selection and price of its candy and popcorn products. However sometimes I am a wee bit grossed out by how messy and slightly dirty the common "retail" area is and it makes me worry the back could be the same. For example, they have Icee cups hanging from the ceiling and they are literally caked with dirty balls of dust...and this is hanging right over their selection of gummy candies. I might be grossed out but it hasn't stopped me from going here. Their selection of in house made chocolates is crazy good - handmade orange and raspberry sticks, turtles and other delicious items are wonderful and always fresh. I am a sucker for sour candies and they have a great variety of them, I could probably eat myself into a diabetic coma and I'm not even diabetic. Love, Love, LOVE their products! Hands down the best candy and popcorn in Minnesota! I placed an order for 400 bags of Chicago mix (yummmm) 2oz. bags for an event my company was hosting and Candyland DELIVERED!!! All the popcorn was neatly bundled and divided into 4 easy to carry (and very large) bags. It was packaged fresh and stayed fresh throughout the night and all through our party the next day. Candyland staff provides EXCELLENT customer service and never misses a deadline. Ever. We'll definitely be using them for our next popcorn social as well as an upcoming employee wedding. read more

They have Candyland in St. Paul. I repeat: There is a Candyland in St. Paul. Having grown up in Minneapolis, I always imagined St. Paul to be the less civilized of the Twin Cities. The presence of Candyland in St. Paul is forcing me to re-evaluate. There is only one Candyland location in St. Paul that I know of (compared with two in Minneapolis), so St. Paul remains lower in the development spectrum overall. But civilization is civilization and it is my duty to enjoy. I love this place. Every time we go downtown we try to stop here to pick up goodies. The cheese corn is outstanding, the best I have ever had. The cheese corn is great on its own or as part of the Chicago Mix. Also for some reason their Sour Cherry Balls at Candyland are better than I have found elsewhere. My wife loves their toffee popcorn, but they don't always have it. As is the case with the Minneapolis locations, the St. Paul location acts as a magnet for us whenever we make the odd trip to downtown St. Paul. read more

My spouse bought a bag of Candyland cheese popcorn - an amazingly tasty treat. I soon found myself in this small shop with so much good stuff to eat, and fresh popcorn continuously popping from their popcorn popper. I wanted to buy so much, but had to restrain myself and buy myself a small bag of salted caramel popcorn for my flight back to California. I am a fan of candy stores in general, but this is my favorite one locally. I am not a chocolate guy, and if you are into that this review will not help you as I cannot speak to their chocolates. I can however, tell you loads about their cinnamon bears, licorice, swedish fish, sour cherry balls and chicago mix pop corn. And what I can tell you about those items is that they are fresh. When you are a gummy candy guy like I am, the age of the candy matters. Mike and Ikes that have been in the vending machine too long are hard and chewy and suck. Same with hot tamales. Candyland is a downtown St Paul staple. It feels like a candy store should, small, unwrapped candy everywhere, and nothing else. I'm not a fan candy stores with lots of bright colored packaged candy on display, I can get that at the grocery store. Candyland has a great selection of chocolates made in house, nuts made in house, a small variety of gummies, and some tasty popcorn. My kids always go for the gummies or suckers (which are clearly the worst choices with so many handmade chocolates around), no matter how hard I try to steer them to something better like a homemade peanut butter cup, chocolate covered graham cracker, turtle, or a s'more. I feel I might be failing them as a father. I've never really had anything here that blew me away, but I'm not sure candy is supposed to blow you away. It's more about tapping into your inner child or watching the faces of your actual children light up when faced with endless candy options; and on that scale Candyland definitely hits the mark. read more

The buttered popcorn is ah-mazing and also decadently greasy. I mean, the old-timey paper popcorn box practically becomes clear with the remains of delicious popcorn butter. Grab napkins. You will need them. It will be worth it. You can get the popcorn without the butter, but it's still going to leave your hands lickably shiny. You may think this is a bad thing...but it's NOT. Commit to the popcorn. Submit to the popcorn. It is the best popcorn you will ever have; all fresh and hot and perfectly textured. You remember the time Crazy Aunt Sally brought you to Candyland in Saint Paul and you got so excited you peed a little. She gave you a quarter, which got you just two gummy bears, and for a brief moment you hated her for toying with your emotions. Well, that did not happen to me (or at least I have blocked most of it out), but the feelings that little boy had hit me every time I walk into Candyland. Now I am that kid back in that candy store, but this time I have the means of purchasing what I want! Candyland is located on Wabasha between 6th and 7th in downtown Saint Paul. They have been open since 1932 and also have two locations in Minneapolis. The best thing about Candyland is the selection. They have just about every candy you could desire. Gummies, jelly beans, hard candy, taffy, sours, suckers, jawbreakers, you name it and they got it. That's not even including anything made with chocolate. They have everything a chocoholic could want. Clusters, jellies, barks, and if you can cover something in chocolate they have done it. Every time I am in Candyland I have to get at least a couple dollars worth of Chippos. These chocolate covered ripple potato chips are the definition of sweet and salty. Yum! I love Chippos almost as much as whiskey! The only thing I may love more than the Chippos is the popcorn. Hands down, Candyland has the best popcorn in the Twin Cities! I have tried many others, but nothing compares. They have all the traditional flavors: cheese, caramel, Chicago mix, and buttered. But they also get creative with the Flavocrunch (think fresh Poppycock), and they will drizzle milk or dark chocolate over their caramel corn. Personally, I love to get a box of buttered popcorn, and Sara usually goes for the cheese. Sara and I have such an affinity for Candyland that we had a self-serve candy bar at our wedding, and last Christmas she happily stood in line for 90 minutes to get our loved ones some holiday treats. Their Saint Paul location is a quick walk from my home. Too quick. It is far too easy for me to hit up Candyland whenever a craving for something sweet or salty hits me. In fact, I often go for runs past Candyland so that I can stop for popcorn. I know that's counterproductive, but it makes complete rational sense in my fat-kid brain. read more

Not the best selection of candy not the worst. Most come in frozen and not a lot of variety. Also Carmel apples are lacking and so are popcorn flavors. I probably go once or twice a year. Definitely not my go to place, also last time I was at the Saint Paul location a girlfriend of a customer pulled out a gun and threatened him for cheating. We were excited to find this old fashioned candy store. Went with 5 other people. I asked to use the bathroom as all other businesses were closed. I am 48 have a heart condition and it is -8°. They told me no. Now all five people bought candy spending over $50 in the place...yet no. They said they didn't have a bathroom. I had to walk around the building and relieve myself in an alley. My partner then returned all the candy we purchased. Absolutely pathetic that they treat customers that way. read more
