The gourmet coffee scene in Newtown can be divided in to two camps - those who choose Luxe Bakery, and those whose loyalties lie next door, at Campos. I've not decided which of the two I prefer - both seem different in ambience to me. When I visited Campos, the first thing I noticed was the richly caffeinated wafts of coffee that linger throughout the café. I loved the metal containers nailed to the back wall filled with a huge variety of coffee beans, and they also have an eclectic range of coffee grinders. These give the unmistakeable message that Campos is first-and-foremost a coffee shop, with food being of secondary importance to them. Campos makes an incredible Affrogato - an ivory ice cream island surrounded by a rich, dark lake of coffee. What's also good to know is that Campos offer coffee-tasting sessions where you can taste a number of different roasts and blends until you find your favourite. This is a brilliant idea, especially when confronted with their extensive range of beans. It also goes to confirm my observation that Campos is the best place to go for coffee, whereas Luxe would be my choice for breakfast/lunch or a snack. That's just my preference though - go make your own.

I very clearly remember the day Campos Coffee and I met. I was at my cousin's house. She was showing off her new coffee machine. We were making affogato (our fathers would be proud). She was over excited to show me her coffee beans. I too get excited by good beans, but my cousin was getting beyond delirious and I began feeling sceptical. But the coffee jar opened and the room filled with the most amazing aroma. And this was before we even started to extract it! Where did you buy this coffee? I had to ask. Campos in Newtown. Oh yeah, it's only the best coffee in Sydney. The rest of the cousins joined in. Now I only ever go to Campos to buy my coffee beans. I have never ordered an actual coffee here as such but I'm sure it is just as good made by their actual baristas. It should be noted that I even managed convert my father to Campos beans after using Vittoria for over 10 years. Damn good!

exquisite specialty coffee. yes i said it. sorry Starbies, you've got nothing on Oz when it comes to coffee. every cup of coffee is special, the flavors are bold but not burned, a traditional yet rich, true coffee flavor and smell. we came for Coffee Cupping, like wine tasting for buyers but open to the general public. while we waited in the shop, you could hear the buzz of conversation, grinding of beans, aromatic coffee smell, and see cups beautifully foam frothed toped with latte art. when the barista approached and asked us if we were here for the Coffee Cupping session I nodded and she motioned to follow her. we did into the back of the store, through the back wall, up the stairs into a dimly lit room let up with a long table prepared with cups of hot water, coffee grinds, and spatoon cups. the head Barista introduced himself and took us through the Campos coffee relationship with the farmers, the processing, and the cupping process. it was a very educational and enjoyable experience. to top it off, we got to each take home a bag of beans and had the opportunity to buy super special harvests from Kenya and Brasil. it may be a few months, but i can't wait to come back!

Experience : Needed our coffee fix on our trip and Australia definitely did not disappoint with their Coffee Food: One of the goals of our trip was getting coffee from as many coffee shops in Australia as possible. Coffee here is way better than the US and we were told Campos was the best. I got the iced mocha and it definitely hit the spot before starting our day of being tourists. Lots of cute pastries but I opted not to get any. Atmosphere/Setting: Cute place with some seating available. I really liked the decor along with the display of all the different coffee beans they sold. Service: Wasn't quick, wasn't slow but I wasn't in any rush, plus I was admiring the decor. Final thoughts: If I'm ever in the area, or country again, I'll be back.

They've set up shop in a teeny tiny Lilliputian cottage in Kensington Lane in the new Central Park precinct. It comes served in these custom cups, they're kind of grainy and glazed and feel like they've been hewn out of very light sandstone by some unnamed master craftsman who will die a nobody but be recognised posthumously as one of the finest artisans of this or any age, Van Gogh style. The barista had the obligatory mustache but boy, did this dude know what service felt like. Polite, friendly, charming, without being overbearing. Win stars out of five. I've been meaning to write up a review for weeks, but struggled to choose what to write about. The menu is seasonal and changes weekly, some samples include finely cut wagyu, crusted in dukkah and served on sourdough, honey-glazed bacon with fresh avocado, and mushrooms with ricotta. Almost everything comes served with sprinklings of sprouts and greens grown on the windowsill. The menu is small but there's almost always something for everyone; however, those looking for your classic big breakfast should come prepared to settle for something a little different. The quality of coffee is not entirely consistent, but the molasses-infused sugar makes up for it. I could eat a jar of it by itself. There's also a range of sandwiches on offer. A friend recently brought home lamb-shoulder on sourdough that had me drooling. I need to be strong, three visits in one day is just too much.

The coffee is fantastic, as are the views across the new Central Park development, and weirdly the noise of the construction across the road doesn't seem to come inside. The small menu is on the spendier side, but it looked creative & wholesome. Bring a book or a notepad to write deep thoughts in.

Sebastian, the robust English chef, serves up traditional and delicious café cuisine for breakfast and lunch on weekdays and a beautiful roast for Sunday lunch. He's funny at best, though I might warn you not to sit too close to the kitchen unless you want to overhear a colorful monologue of cynicism and crude jokes. Some winning items on the menu include the "Big Salad" which changes daily and can include a delicious mixture of pumpkin, cous cous, eggplant, walnuts, raisins, and any other odds and ends the chef decides to add on the day. I recommend ordering it with poached chicken, which is as tender as can be. Another popular item is the BLT, served on Turkish bread. Careful though, it's big enough to feed your entire family of seven. If you can appreciate a good chip (or 2 dozen), Bar Mattino's are hand cut and fried to perfection. Lastly, I would highly and enthusiastically recommend the house made brownie, for which I solely blame the gain of 3 kilos. It's chocoloatey, and melty, and powered sugary and just ALL good.
