I am often in Sydney for work, and sometimes for fun, and usually get the train to Whynyard. After an early start for one of the firstflights from Tullamarine to Kingsford Smith, coffee is often high on my agenda, and Three Beans Cafe is a welcome sight. Not only is the coffee great, the staff are always on good form, including plenty of banter with regulars they obviously know well and get along with. First impressions count, and GC had me at hello... That 'tash, is to curling what.... Curling is to the winter olympics. Awesome sauce! I fully expect moustache rides will be on the menu if business ever hits the skids. Alas, despite the gleeful charm of the curly coifed one, nothing short of an excellent coffee with character was going to make the all important lasting impression on me and sadly in that area GC disappoints. I gave GC the Soy Latte test and the Long Black test and it just doesn't measure up to other coffee in the area. I like strong coffee with complexity and GC just doesn't have that. It's not the worst but it is very weak despite using the same La Marzocco espresso machine (that Barista's rave about for ease of use) as other places in the area. The service at GC however is very good and to some people that's first priority. So if you aren't too fussy about your coffee and are looking for a smile and a spring in your step from an energetic soul then get your morning fix at GC, and start the day on a happy note.

I think it's in the top three places in the area so far as quality wise for coffee. I had a bagel with cream cheese and sat inside the tiny little shop and it was delicious. I would have preferred to have been able to spread my own cream cheese as I think that they put a bit too much on for my taste. I will say the milk crates for tables are a little problematic as I found myself stooping to get my coffee and spilt it a little but that's really not a problem for the quality of the shop. The rest of the food in he glass cabinet, muffins and sandwiches, looked delicious and I can't wait to go back and try more things there!

Newspapers all round for you to sit and enjoy. Bottles of still and sparking water stocked up ready to help cleanse your palettes too. I'm a bit of a sparkling fanatic so I was pleasantly surprised to see and drink it - Although the bubbles are heavy and far between if you know what I mean, not that I'm complaining. Other comments: Coffee beans and roasting is different week to week. I would letting them know your palette "requirements" and see what they recommend. I personally see a few Kenyan beans there and I love the acidic and fruity overtones that dominate the coffee in the short black/expresso. Give it a go if black is your thing. They also have a nice touch in that they serve your coffee with the coffee bean info card that gives you an idea of the altitude, origin, processing method, and tasting notes to expect - its a small touch that anyone can do but haven't seen it anywhere else and I love it! With regards to the coffee itself their choice in beans is impeccable and they craft the drinks to perfection. I usually try different SO lattes and no matter what you can really taste the unique flavors in their espresso: we tried the Rwanda and Geisha Lattes recently, the Rwandan was amazing as usual but the Geisha was like nothing I'd tasted before - it was a complex fruity/bright flavor that is usually difficult to achieve in a latte but there's was done to perfection, highly highly recommend!

I have now picked up the art of differentiating between okay coffee and amazing coffee. This place not only falls into the 'amazing' category because of the wonderful staff but also because I found myself wanting to savour every sip. The aroma that was presented to my nose was out of this world and the flavour of the beans were carried even through my flat white, which has quite a bit of milk in it. However, on our last day after a walk around Sydney harbour and through Hyde Park, we passed Batch Espresso on the way back to our hotel. Their coffee was perfect - extra hot, strong and creamy. Located next to Victoria Park and near Uni Row, I was surprised to have found this gem that the locals get to enjoy everyday. Walking in, a barista takes your order for takeaway and has you standing behind them as they make your order. There is plenty of seating inside, but those are reserved for those dining in. They have their roastery in the back, with large windows separating from the cafe. We had visited twice here and each time was a great experience. I had the opportunity to try both their Ethiopian and their Guatemalan long blacks, and the tasting notes do stand out. They have a variety of coffee beans you can purchase, along with a more limited selection of teas. Toby's Estate is a must try for all coffee aficionados in the area.
