Last month we had the unfortunate experience of having to go through mold remediation in our guest bathroom. Once that process was completed, we needed to hire a general contractor to basically rebuild our bathroom. We retained Campbell Quality Construction to do a total remodel of the entire 3500 SQF upper level of our house, which hadn't been re-done since it was built in the 1980s. The remodel was done in two phases over a two year period, with a break in between phases. The remodel entailed a large master bedroom complex, a very high ceiling living room/dining room, and a large open-plan kitchen with a gas fireplace, which required removing a wall to open up the space. Making things more challenging, the house is semi-circular in plan-view, so there are no square corners and construction required special attention to detail. The result of the remodel was nothing short of spectacular! Visitors to the house marvel at its appearance, and some have said that it should appear in some publication like Architectural Digest. Our home is stunningly beautiful and so comfortable to live in. We love it! We found Semso Redzic, the owner of CQC, easy to work with, and he and our designer proved to be an excellent team and worked well together. We are completely satisfied with CQC's work. When I requested a quote from Campbell Quality Construction through Yelp, Semso responded within 30 minutes. When he dropped by to discuss our project, we immediately sensed that he knew his stuff. He gave us great practical suggestions, especially where he helped us reduce our cost (and his price) and guided our choices while quickly picking up on our style preferences. Later that day, Semso emailed us his detailed estimate and we had a little sticker shock, being relatively inexperienced with construction projects, but further investigation showed his quote was well within the norm for the amount of work and materials involved. He showed flexibility on construction and materials and patiently readjusted his quote several times to fit our budget. Throughout the project and even after it was completed in about 10 days, Semso was quick to respond to our phone calls. He always took care of his crew to make sure they had what they needed, when they needed it. CQC distinguished themselves by their professionalism: Semso and his crew led by Rubin arrived precisely on time (even a few minutes early) as they would every single day, told us what they would do each day, and then did exactly that and often a little more. I don't think they ever took more than 15-20 minutes break for lunch, and one guy came in for a full day's work on a Saturday. They kept the work area clean and wrapped up at the end of each day to make us comfortable around the construction. We often asked for changes, or little tweaks and the crew cheerfully obliged us. They all wanted to make sure we got exactly what we wanted - what a great team! The final result is amazing, even better than imagined when we first started out. Having worked with many contractors in the past, I knew Semso of Campbell Quality Construction was a gem to find. Prompt, professional, knowledgeable and very detail oriented, Semso knows what he's doing and does it well. I had him remove and interior wall between two rooms which required structural knowledge, electrical, framing, sheetrock, texturizing, painting and trim work. Semso made quick work of the project and the new opening looks as if it had always been there. In a guest room, he removed carpeting and replaced it with hardwood floors to match the rest of the house. We used Campbell Quality Construction to remodel our kitchen after we discovered that our dishwasher had a slow leak that ruined our wood floors and soaked the sub-floor. Although the insurance company covered the cost to repair the damage, my wife and I used this as an opportunity to modernize our 1960s-era kitchen and to pay for some upgrades. We are so glad that we selected CQC, lead by Semso, for our remodel. Semso was very easy to work with and listened to our vision for the kitchen. From the time his crew started until the end, Semso constantly kept us informed as to what would be going on each day. This was important to us, as we decided to live in our house during the remodel and have three toddlers. After each day of work, Semso's crew cleaned up the day's mess and put their tools away. We even trusted them to lock up if we were out of the house when they finished for the day. If we ever had concerns, Semso was easy to contact and was prompt in returning our calls. It was apparent to us that Semso had been working with his crew for some time, as he had a great relationship with them and their workmanship was outstanding (more on that later). From my observation, Semso had been working with his crew for years, whether it be the electricians, the wood floor guys, or his general construction guys. We made a few changes on the fly with Semso and he was very accommodating and promptly gave us a revised estimate so we could decide whether to proceed with the changes. When it came to dealing with the insurance company to apportion the estimate between repairing the damage from the dishwasher (covered) and our upgrades (not covered), Semso was easy to work with and helped facilitate that process. Semso's workmanship is outstanding. As one example, although we ordered custom cabinets for our kitchen, because our walls were not entirely level, Semso's crew had to hand fit the cabinets to the wall to avoid gaps between the cabinets and the wall. They did so and our cabinets look amazing. Semso's workmanship is also apparent in the custom tile backsplash and the nice details he added on his own such as a new wood frame and ledge under our kitchen window. In the end, our kitchen looks beautiful, was on-budget, and was finished on time. After the first day of demolition, seeing my old kitchen ripped apart, I knew I would have to put a lot of trust in Semso to put it back together and to have the finished product look great. Not only did Semso meet my high expectations, but the finished kitchen looks better than I even imagined. We constantly receive compliments on our kitchen and we are already thinking about the next home project we want to tackle. Do I like Semso personally, of course, but my backyard gazebo and fireplace project was extremely mismanaged. I truly believe the ongoing projects caused the biggest issue with having unsupervised sub-contractors having to step in to complete portions of our project. When there were items that required changes, Semso arbitrarily told his electrician to add can lights, or had his two or three different masonry guys add add add or alter the fireplace addition that was never to the specs we desired - and at the end, Semso came to us for a lot more money, and wanted us to sign for a "change order" contract for over $4K more than our agreed price of $33,000 plus dollars. BTW - a change order has to be agreed upon prior to the work!!! All these additional items that we were told - implied and or agreed to - and this was the direct quote from Semso, "ok, I will include EVERYTHING on the project - just give me a thousand more" - so, that is when we signed our contract from 32K to 33K!!!! Then at the end, he wanted additional line items like gutters - that we never received!!!!!!!! Why wasn't this engineered into the project????? The workers (although Ruben was great) left my backyard in shambles!!! Overspray and mortar remnants everywhere. My landscape lighting needs at least four replacements and I'll have to repaint my fence and back side of my house. No matter how nice the finished work looks, it remains in need of gutters and costly time and effort to clean up the mess!!! read more
