One of my favorite places usually, nice atmosphere , generally good food. However we had dinner Oct 29th and the veal Marsala was so blackened it was inedible. Sending a meal back is such a hassle. Everyone else's entree is hot and should be eaten immediately. I was disappointed and will be a little hesitant to return. It is a little loud but still one of the better places in Evanston. This is one of my new favorite Italian Restaurants. The atmosphere is very nice and intimate and the service is attentive. My wife had eaten here before, but this was my first time eating here. We live in Evanston and always enjoy finding great restaurants in our area to dine at. The food was pretty stellar. The crown jewel of our meal was the appetizer dish: the sea scallops. By far some of the best prepared I've ever had (no exaggeration); pan-seared to perfection. My entree (trout) was also very well prepared; served with melted tomatoes and spinach. The flavor profile was exquisite. Also, the homemade bread that was complimentary for the table was so fresh; the texture wasn't too soft or too hard. Paired nicely with our meal. For dessert, we shared the vanilla bean pudding with caramel and a scoop of vanilla ice cream; amazing texture. Finished our meal off perfectly. We'll be back for sure to try more dishes. This place is amazing. It's a small Italian restaurant with a cozy feel. I came here with a friend. We had the bruschetta appetizer which was delicious, a bit different than the usual but we loved it. I had the Pappardelle and my friend the Salmon. Both were amazing! Hadn't been there in a long time and was excited to return. It was just as I had remembered, bustling and cozy. Sadly, I left feeling very disappointed. It took a server twenty minutes to approach our table and ask for a cocktail order (6pm reservation). I ordered a beet salad and the salmon entre. Both were "meh". I make better versions at home. Beet salad was skimpy. Salmon was dry, unseasoned and sat on a bed of bitter lentils and greens. NOT ONCE did our server return to our table to check on how we liked our food or ask if we wanted wine with dinner!!! I'd be furious if I were the manager, as I know that's where they make their money. read more

Warm and professional staff even on an evening when the temperature hit record low in Chicago and as one of the last tables. I got the class pappaedelle bolognese. The sauce was thick, flavorful, and properly cooked into the pasta. My only suggestion was that I wished the pasta was more al dente as it was slightly overcooked. I also tried the seafood linguine and salmon that my friends ordered and really liked both. The ingredients were clearly very fresh and the chefs knew how to highlight them. This was definitely the case with the seafood linguine where the flavor was more complex yet well balanced at the same time. We we're excited to come here after hearing great things from our friends and reading reviews. We should have listened to the lesser ratings because those were the most true. The food was mediocre at best. It was all cooked very well but the flavor was lacking. We had the gnocchi, bolongese, lamp chop and tagliatelle. The best of the 4 was the lamb chop surprisingly. We also had the bread pudding which was nothing special. Our server said it was life changing. I'll have you the calories and $9 and tell you it's not. Our server was very friendly, knew her wine and was very helpful in suggesting items. However even her skills couldn't have made today's dinner worth the money. This place was excellent!! From the moment you walk in it is a warm reception. A host retrieved our coats and put them in a closet. The ambiance was elegant yet perfect for a big family to come enjoy some quality time. I went for mine and my moms birthday and we all enjoyed it a ton. The service from our server was wonderful and he was there to answer any of our questions as well as educate us on the specials. The food was amazing!!!! I had a special of lamb over white beans with dried tomatoes and broccoli and it was delicious!!! Some people at the table had pasta, duck, and short ribs and everybody walked out incredibly happy. We visited Campagnola recently for dinner on a weekday. Nice vibe, good food... VIBE: Cozy neighborhood feel. Decent lighting: spots on each table, with upper walls dim. Mostly hipster-free. Noise was energetic, but tolerable. SERVICE: We felt welcome. Servers were attentive and efficient. Food arrived in a timely fashion. VERY GOOD: Beet salad was delicious & fresh. Shells with sausage & peas was tasty in all respects. Halibut special with romesco sauce was very nice with crispy roasted potatoes. Sticky toffee date cake was the star of the show, rich yet light, and such good flavor. Clean plates all around! Nice wine list, with good selections at a variety of price points. Now that I've found it, I'm sure to be back when in Evanston again. They seem to do everything right. My only suggestion for improvement would be that they take online reservations... read more

Have always loved going to Campagnola for special occasions over the years, but have not been able to enjoy a restaurant for so many months now. However, tonight was my husband's birthday and I wanted to have a special dinner for him. Luckily I found Campagnola on Grubhub and were so looking forward to our delivery. Shortly after it arrived I realized one item was missing and called immediately. I was very quickly told that apparently when Grubhub places your order, if they are told something is not on the menu, they may just take it upon themselves to not let you know. Meanwhile, I was immediately given to the owner who explained their menu to me and asked me to choose whatever I wanted and he would drive it over himself right away. We kept everything warm, the owner himself was there within 10 minutes with not only the dish I asked for but another dish, that was even better. I served dinner to my husband and it was CRAZY DELICIOUS and we were like "Why do we not order from here all the time?". Just amazing service despite the Grubhub snafu and made me look good for my husband's birthday even stuck on the couch. Next time we will pick it up. :) read more

One of the many perks of living in the burbs is that you don't need to make dinner reservations months ahead of time. I even have luck calling the day of for date night. Unfortunately, Evanston seems to be on the "reservations months ahead" bandwagon because I haven't had as much luck there. I called Campagnola weeks ahead of my triple date and was offered the early bird special time of 5:30pm. We took it since we were hoping to eat on the earlier side anyway. We arrived for lunch (er dinner). We were the first few people in the restaurant. In fact, they still had their closed sign up when we arrived, but it wasn't long before the restaurant started filling up. I can see why people are calling ahead because this was one of the better meals I've enjoyed over the past few months. All the apps we ordered (bruschetta, scallops, beet salad) were absolutely delish. For my entree I opted for salmon, which can be hit or miss...but it sure was a hit at Campagnola. Somehow I managed to leave room for a few (OK many) bites of two scrumptious desserts. Our waiter was on top of his game. And the charming atmosphere is perfect for date night (or a triple date night in our case). And while you may be dining on a college campus or unlikely to be eating among many college students here. What a great little neighborhood find! Campagnola is a little Italian eatery located in the heart of Evanston. It is a cozy and intimate space- perfect for a date- with exposed brick walls, wooden tables and fabric canvases hung on the walls. The menu changes as it is made with organic, local and seasonal offering so there may be slight tweaks to things you like on the menu. Even the meats are procured locally. While the wine list and menu are select in their offerings- there are plenty of things to chose from that will please all in your party. We started with a wine called Truth Lindsey's Cuvee red- a lovely blend of reds with strong tastes of fruit and a bit peppery. Perfect! And reasonably priced at around $40. Our thinking was if a lessor priced wine was this good- I could only imagine what the higher priced offerings would reveal. After consulting with our server, Emma, she steered us toward a couple of her favorites on the menu. For starters we split the grilled octopus which was quite good with a strong olive flavor. And we also had a caprese salad with really fresh buffalo mozzarella and several kinds of grape tomatoes and basil on the plate along with toasted bread. For our entrees- I had the Pappardelle Bolognese which was great with those wide noodles holding the sauce that was rich with veal and pork. My friend had the Veal Scallopini with polenta. Both of our entree's were delicious! While I wished we had had room for the berry crisp for dessert- alas-it was not to be as I was so full from the fabulous entree and starters. Service was spot on with Emma taking the time to tell us about the specials of the night and in being attentive without being overbearing. (I also loved her headband! ) Dinner for two with wine ran around $120. Parking is available on the street. Evanston is not usually on my regular "go to" list. It's a bit of a trek from my house. But an old friend has recently moved to the area so I may be spending more time up there than before.. Hmm . . . . if other restaurants in the area are as good as Campagnola- it could quickly become a favorite hang out of mine! read more
