And the volunteers who work there are really nice and very well informed. I would love to take visiting friends and relatives out for the experience but I would also gladly go back by myself just for the train ride. Seriously, if you don't mind the drive out there (and why would you - the mountain scenery is gorgeous), this might be the single greatest value in terms of a local weekend excursion. I can't say enough good things about this place. It's probably a bit out of the way for school field trips from the city, but kids will especially love the experience.

The Motor Transport Museum is a free museum, however a donation is suggested and very much appreciated. The museum is run by volunteers and is only open on Saturday's and the 1st Sunday of each month. I never caught the names of the volunteers that were on site when we visited, but they were very nice and full of knowledge about the history of the cars and the iconic Mill building. When you arrive, you will go into the Mill. They have a guest book that they will ask you to sign and there is free bottle water available to all guest and other soda and snacks available for purchase. From there the volunteer will give you a tour of the Mill and tell you all the history of what they do there. It is a great little tour and we appreciated it so much. After the tour, you are free to roam around and explore the property. There are a ton of unique cars, truck, buses and other machinery all around. You can easily spend an hour to a couple of hours here. HIGHLY recommend a visit. We paired this adventure up with a ride on the Pacific Southwest Railway which is about a mile and a half down the road. Makes for a great day trip for the family.

Campo, California…read more The difference between Gaskill Stone Museum and the Mountain Empire Historical Society is that the Society overseers a handful of historical sites including the Gaskill Brothers Museum along with Camp Lockett, Campo Valley, and various other items in this border region that cover more than the Campo Valley areas. The structure used to be made out of wood, but, harsh fire fights forced the Gaskill Brothers to reconstruct into the bulletproof stone which is what the building is today. The bottom floor is dedicated to the convenient store, and several local things. The upper floor is dedicated as the Army's Regional Operating HQ. The upper museum is dedicated to the 1st, 10th, 11th and 28th Calvary from 1876 - 1944. Access/Roads: C Paved. CA Hwy 94 travels east and west along the Mexico border. Parking: F Enough parking for three or four cars. Distance: C Located between El Centro & San Diego. Tecate, Mexico is a few minutes away. It's not that far from civilization. The Tecate Community Museum is a history and culture museum that introduces visitors to the history…read moreof the Tecate area. It is only three years old and continues to grow. There are a couple of highlights and the most complete exhibit is a wonderful history of the Kumiai (Kumeyaay) Indians that used to live in the area. Housed in a domed room with awesome acoustics that they call the Cavern of Ancestors. In this room they explore what they call the "pre-hostoric" era and it focuses on the flora, fauna, natural features of the land and then the Kumiai people and how they lived, ate, interacted, and the handmade items they created. You could actually spend about an hour in there and everything is in both English and Spanish and includes computer and video exhibits as well as some artifacts. There is a model of a traditional Kumiai home in the style after Europeans arrived and also a botanical garden that provides examples of native plants. There is a house that is considered the "historical" period and it includes examples of furniture, photographs, equipment, household goods, etc. It is a start, but can use some work and they have room to grow in there. The third exhibit is considered the "contemporary" period and is a new building that is still under construction. The first floor however is partially set up as a exhibit of the railroad. It's REALLY well done, especially for not being finished and interesting! This is the second highlight of the museum. There is also a gift shop with kind of a weird mish-mash of stuff, but I bought some jewelry with the excuse that I was helping to assist the community since I had free tour! there are restrooms on site and they do sell bottles of cold beverages in the gift shop. They also take credit cards in the gift shop. The museum is really nice and probably more focused towards kids and school groups, but we enjoyed it and probably would have enjoyed it even more if it weren't over 100 degrees at the time! it's located right next to the awesome sports complex. The bar is full service and most people serving drinks have strong bartending knowledge and good wit. A big highlight here is their events, most involving food, but it can be hard to see what the offering is if you are not on FaceBook. I highly recommend the food nights, as they are inexpensive and high quality. in a couple of cases, it was served up by a retired Navy chief mess specialist who definitely is a foodie. So far, I have had ribs, "Tijuana-style" hot dogs (with awesome garlic fries), wood-fired pizza and pulled pork. Not one was even close to a "miss". I know the TJ border can take up to 5 hours on busy days so I never go back to the US thru that border. I recommend getting here before they open at 6am so that you can get thru in less than 30 min. Tecate is the border city here and it's such a pretty city with lots of coffee shops, so you can always park your car and walk over to the border, have coffee and walk back, and the wait is not even long to walk back, maybe 5 min max. The agents are pretty nice too.

One ship was away on a sail in the afternoon this past Saturday, but there was more than enough to explore on the various vessels during our visit. Plenty to see and experience on each of the boats. We stepped onto the swift boat where staff educated us about its machine gun. And we walked through and checked out the different sections of the USS Dolphin submarine too. The HMS Surprise was a lovely ship with plenty of references to its use in films. The Star of India was like a museum all on its own, so many areas to explore and a ton of history to learn. The Californian was pretty basic, not very different from many other ships we've visited in the past. Steam Ferry Berkeley was the largest, with displays showcasing scientific instruments, model boats, artwork, the riverboats in Vietnam, the engine room, a torpedo caught by a fisherman, and a special exhibit featuring the "histories of the black pacific". There's a gift shop on site as well. Altogether, the variety of ships at the Maritime Museum made for an interesting adventure, a bit touristy, but worth the cost if you're into history or simply like boats.

The ticket also got you access to the other ships to walk around which was cool. But the coolest part was that San Salvador was sailed like they would have sailed it waaay back when. We got to see real rigging masts sails steering all being done by a crew and it was a totally amazing experience and such a perfect day. Bonus: we saw dolphins and it was a perfect day. Drawback: the gentlemen speaking throughout didn't talk into his mic often so missed a lot but oh well - who's really going for history?! such a good time!!. 2. I had a good with my tickets and called and tried to talk to folks in person and could never get someone. The tickets were cancelled but not refunded which was a bummer and staff in the kiosk even said they phone lines were messed up. A bummer. :(

The instructor was easy to follow and clearly very knowledgeable about beekeeping. You can tell she has a deep understanding of the subject and a real passion for teaching it. The class was very informative but also easy to understand, even for complete beginners. There were people of all ages there--even kids--and everyone seemed engaged and able to follow along. The class was held at her home, which made for a very comfortable and welcoming classroom environment. She also had a great amount of personal learning materials and examples that really helped bring the information to life. I honestly can't say enough good things about the experience. She clearly has built a strong following over the years, and after attending the class it's easy to see why. She's friendly, helpful, and a true wealth of information. If you're interested in learning about beekeeping, I highly recommend taking one of her classes.
